Welcome to the GTZ Movie Club!

The Skinny:
It's the same deal as a book club. I'm thinking we choose a movie every week and those who agree to participate make it their beezewax to watch the movie at their leisure within that week, then come here to analyze and discuss it.

Choosing a Movie:
We'll function in 1 week intervals - from a Monday to a Sunday. Every participant in the movie club, going in the order of sign-ups, will post a positive and negative poll consisting of 2 movies (that are hopefully easy enough to track down via Netflix or other streaming sites). Each participant would then vote for a movie using the classic GTZ scoring system, and I'll post the official tally every Monday night. From that point on, everyone will have a week to watch the winning movie and post whatever you'd like to say about it.

Reason:
To continue the already-entertaining film discussion here among the GTZ loyal and maybe even discover some flicks we'd enjoy, but would have never bothered to watch otherwise. And/or torture those who suddenly find themselves obligated to watch a movie they know they'll hate.

Brother, it's a fantastic flick, but it it's totally a downer. The book is even more bleak, but it's sort of a hard read. It takes some effort to finish a Cormac McCarthy book.

There won't be many smiles after this one.

They never really say what happened to make the world dead, so it's kind of up to interpretation. I always thought of a nuclear holocaust. If that is the case, it's scary as hell.

Oh man, I think this was one of the most emotional post apocalyptic type movies I have seen thus far. I enjoy watching Viggo's acting, but for some reason when I first saw the title and possibly a trailer for "The Road," it just didn't seem like something I'd watch. So yeah, I actually heard of this film prior to watching it and I watched it last night.

Overall, for a post-apocalyptic type despite the "event" that caused it, I would actually put this up there with the movie "Maggie," another emotional movie I enjoyed.

Guy Pearce - I can't get used to him not playing any roles that involve smartassery, action,
etc. ever since I seen him in Lockout. Although I small role, I think he played it well. Rober Duvall -
He's really mellowed out as an actor getting older, but this was a good small role of his that I've seen.
Charlize Theron - Always had a crush on her, no matter what she played. It's funny that she was in this one because I didn't realize she was along with the other two I've mentioned.

I completely forgot about Maggie. That's one I always wanted to see but never got around to.

While some movies, like Mad Max, almost glamorize a post-apocalyptic world, this one really shows the horrors of it. With a show like the Walking Dead, they originally struggled to find food, but now food, gas, and ammo are plentiful. This seems more realistic since everyone and everything is dying. Even with the attempt at a somewhat hopeful ending, you still have to think that there really is no hope in this world.

Yes, I feel it more accurately portrays what a post apocalyptic world would be like for one type of scenario. As a whole general thought for post apocalyptic worlds, it goes to show that no matter how prepared you are, you can always find that you won't be as prepared as you thought you were.

Damn depressing ass crap.

I expected Charlize to come back at some point but it just got more and more depressing.
There must have been lots of people left alive as they ran into close to 20 people during the course of the movie.
Wish they would have ended it so I wouldn't have to endure this.

Good movie but just too depressing.

Dude, Netflix isn't free. Some people would rather rent a movie they want to watch once, for $4 off Amazon or a similar service, as opposed to get billed each month for something they may not use frequently. It's not tough to understand.

I agree with you, widely accessible movies on platforms many people are members of are what should be aimed for. But to continually hound on where the movies are streaming is getting a bit old. Some movies worthy of watching aren't on Netflix, and this isn't a "Netflix movie club". I completely get your point, but let's move on k?

Well, that's just not true. People discuss the movies, just not at a CONSTANT, THREAD-BUMPING pace that matches the "potential" you saw in the club. Be that as it may, even if it's whitefire calling it hipster bullcrap and me disagreeing - that's still technically discussing the movie.

Arguing about the content in a movie, even if it's within a disagreement, is more satisfying than reading you complain about how to watch a movie. Honestly, the silence in between discussion is more satisfying than reading you complain about how to watch a movie. This is the fact of the matter: the club isn't for everyone. Plenty of people have opted out of it. That said, a literal 0 people have opted out over not being able to track down and watch a movie. Nobody else is as torn up about this as you... so maybe it's just you who is having such overbearing difficulty.

Regardless, crap's not changing. People are free to offer up whatever movie they want to, and people are free to watch or not. If a movie that's not on Netflix is chosen and you choose not to attempt and track it down because of that, that's on you. The club isn't going to repurpose to make it so that only movies HAMMER has immediate access to are eligible for a poll. So I mean, either get over it now and move on like I suggested, or opt out of the club like others have. Could not care less either way, but would rather you stop complaining.

I don't think he's trolling at all. I think he's riled up. But I wouldn't disagree with what he said one bit toward the end about no one showing up other than Monday's to vote for movies were at a minimum not having lively discussions about.

We should structure in (a suggestion) a platforms agreement. We say this this and this are in. Netflix, Amazon, whatever else and essentially yeah we limit the club to a certain extent but we also provide ourselves with a more inclusive group feel and hopefully get closer to the potential of such a movie club.

Maybe he is trolling but I think you can troll and be right at the same time. Just because you rattled someone's cage and perturbed them, doesn't mean you didn't bring up a good point you're simply hamfisting it instead, thus a cage rattled.
theJaw

My cage isn't rattled lol. I didn't get the gist that he was trolling but that he is sincerely mad about it. Regardless, he's the only one with an issue as far as finding movies goes. Or at least, he's the only one who has voiced it. Everyone else makes it work.

People have actually discussed the majority of the movies just fine. They don't need to be deep literary discussions. Though that'd be nice, this is a video game forum - I've tempered my expectations. I was just hoping people would watch movies they usually wouldn't and then post what they thought. It doesn't have to pages of deep thought - if you post even one blurb about a movie that you watched, that's completely fine.

As long as people are watching the movies, I'm fine with that. It's the club's bare minimum participation point. Don't need people to turn in their thesis on the film, if you wanna share, go for it, but people are certainly posting about the movie in between poll day. As someone who's done so more than once, I have some knowledge of the topic in question.

I've heard lots of good about "Tales of Halloween" and it's hard to find a copy of (unless you go Region B or something); and of course "Dreadtime Stories" is also on my watch list.

I'm not a fan of reviews in general. I may look them over just to get an idea of what to expect, but for the most part, I love movies and I won't be biased over reviews as they tend to be more personal. It really is to each their own when it comes to what to like and not to like.

Either way, I really wanted to see the hype is about on Halloween, but I definitely will watch both.

I watched this last night. It had an interesting opening credits, the "stories" felt like they went from scary to scary comedy to full on comedy, nothing horror about it. It was also interesting to see a variety of familiar faces from the horror culture, like Adrienne Barbeau, Robert Rustler, Barry Bostwick, Stuart Gordon, and Barbara Crampton to name a few.

I also found it interesting that each story had a specific main monster and that a few of them overlapped with certain characters. Towards the end, I think I had grasped that all these stories were literally happening in the same town/neighborhood like the opening credits seemed to suggest.

My favorite "story" was of the masked killer and the UFO. That little alien was sooo cwute,
then of course how the story went on and ended was just funny.

Meh. 5/10 Even a short has to tell a story, and some didn't. Some of them were okay and I laughed out loud during 3 of them and succumbed to a jump scare.

The Jason homage was a funny homage and I got a kick out of it. The pumpkin monster was just goofy, but it cracked me up initially. The rest after the first kill wasn't very good. The one with the kidnappers was pretty funny too. The Hansel one was terrible. The one about not looking back was ok and a bit creepy and suspenseful. There were some editing issues throughout and as a fan of B cinema, most of the acting wasn't even that level. I really liked the spirit of it though and the poster is pretty cool.

Oh man, the Cube movies were some messed up stuff on imprisonment... and that's not even counting "The Fortress" movies.

Iighty guys CIRCLE gets the nod.

The posters/black & red color scheme has me worried that this is a Saw clone.

I started Circle but had to stop about an hour in because I had to go somewhere. I'm really liking it so far. I have my theories about who is going to make it or what is going to happen. I'm expecting a twist.

Ok, I just finished it. To be honest, I wasn't even close on the ending except...

There was a twist of sorts, but not what I expected at all. I kept thinking the big guy that never spoke was somehow in on it. That turned out to be wrong. We never really got an answer except that it was aliens, and one person got to live. We can assume that the conclusion the people came up with was accurate, but I guess we will never really know. I was a little confused at the very last scene though. Everybody was just staring at the space ships like zombies except the guy from our room. What was that all about?

I think the real question is what was this movie trying to say? Or better yet, what does it mean? Here are some of my thoughts...

Clearly, the best person did not survive, but maybe the strongest did. He had everyone completely convinced that he wanted one of the girls to make it, but that was BS. He played everybody. This was (ugly) politics at it's core. This guy was good at convincing people to take his side and eventually stabbed everyone in the back to come out on top. I think there was also a social commentary that deep down, we all judge each other. As much as we may pretend that we don't, truthfully, it's one of our deep rooted functions as humans. Quick, everyone vote for the black guy...that summed it up perfectly.

Another thought, the baby...the baby couldn't vote and could not be voted against until the very end. However, the aliens still counted an unborn baby as a living creature. Is this another political statement? The survivor had to choose to kill the baby. That of course brings me back to my first thought. He certainly was not the best person there, but he was probably the strongest.

Well first off, I did not feel it had any resemblance to the Cube movies. It also was not a "Saw" clone.

I AM reminded of the Thunderdome, where multiple contestants enter and one contestant leaves, except in this movie it appears the contestants were not given the option to enter willingly. It really was an interesting movie. The differences in thought processes of the characters, their personalities, etc. keeps you wonder at the theme, or main idea, of the movie.

By the end of the movie, you're still left with the question "What was the purpose?" You see throughout the movie the question has multiple possible answers to it, but in the end, it's the question you're left with.

The other thought I had was how desensitized everybody became to the deaths. At first, they were panicking and crying about how they didn't want to kill people. By the time they had a plan and were trying to learn more about people, they almost ignored the deaths and just continued on with their conversations.

I don't think it was about desensitization, but more about accepting the inevitable as it had already been pointed out. There seemed to be a lot of different points of views involved ranging from cheating the system to forming alliances, but one thing that was consistent was the voting system was the same in the sense nobody could actually see who you voted for. Also the typical traits and personalities of humanity were pretty consistent as well.

One question though, as a viewer, what would you have done? I think the answer to this question could vary depending on the situation.

I also would like to point out the "countdown" period definitely shook me up a bit because it's like Pavlov's Dog... it was associated with the end result.

I don't know what I would have done. I probably would have died. I'm a 37 year old white man. Nobody would choose me over a kid or a pregnant lady. I probably would have been mostly quiet since the people that spoke tended to make themselves targets. The big guy that never spoke lasted a pretty long time. Maybe if you get down to the final 10 you start talking unlike that guy who just accepted his fate. For the record, my twist that I expected was for that guy to be responsible for the whole thing somehow.

Yeah, I had the same feeling myself when it came down to when they started talking about him as well.
