I own a Garmin nuvi 1450 that has free lifetime map updates. A couple of years ago a guy sent my daughter a used Garmin nuvi 255w so that she could visit him out of state (long story). The maps in the 255w are out of date, but Garmin wants $50 for a one time update of the maps.

The software looks very similar for both devices, and the 255w appears to have more features. It looks like both devices would use the same map files and that all I would need to do is copy the map files from the 1450 to the 255w.

Before I go searching the 'net, has anyone had experience with this?

I'm interested in hearing that story.

Buy an APP called co-pilot. Free updates and has traffic alerts.

I'm going to try the Open Source Map option.

I'll let everyone know if it works.

The first Open Source Map I substituted for the original Garmin map appeared to work fine.

However, OSM doesn't offer a single map for the US. It offers them in Regions. OSM maps can be combined using a free program called GMAPTOOL. I live on the border of two states in different OSM Region maps, so I tried to combine the two OSM Region maps for the areas I need. I was able to successfully create a single map, but I got the message "There were errors". When I tried to use the combined map, the Garmin software did not work properly. I couldn't enter an address and get driving Directions. I guess I need to study the GMAPTOOL software a little more.

Does your daughter have a smartphone?

Just install Waze and be done with it.

She has a smartphone, but the plan she and my wife are on has very limited data.

There's an APP called Co-Pilot. It downloads the maps. It's $10. Traffic alerts free for the first year.
