I need to rebuild the forum archive. I do this once a year to maintain the forum's snappy performance.

This is when I move old topics to the archive so the active set of topics is smaller and thus faster for the database.

I try to start around 9am US/Eastern time. It takes about 45 minutes and it's best to shut the site down until it's done.

If things go well, I think it could be done by 10am, or noon if something goes wrong.

I just did the yearly offer/trade message archiving. That can be done while the site is up. It only takes a minute.

Seems to me that when you did this last year, it took significantly less time than you thought.

Yup.....10 minutes.

BTW, the pager for Site Feedback only seems to be showing next/previous page, without page numbers for faster skipping. General, for example, gives me numbers to click. Something going on with SF?

I looked at the topic from last year too, but I interpreted it differently. Post #2 I said "less that 10 minutes..." but that was meaning that I would start it in less than 10 minutes. I assume I did start it at 9am. And post #3 I said, "and done" at 9:46am. So, 45 minutes was about right judging from that. But, maybe I'm missing something. I think in a previous year it had taken less time.

I'm unsure what's going on with the paging thing. I see page numbers in SF myself at the moment. I signed on as you and I see what you mean, though I also saw it happen in General... until I went to the bottom and clicked the "show non-new" link. I think it has something to do with the "Forum Only New" option (which you have set). When it does that, it isn't able to count page correctly, so it doesn't do it. I'm not sure, but it's something like that. It's not something I've changed in years.

I see, I misinterpreted. I do remember one year it took hardly any time to run though.

I think maybe there are phases to it, so maybe the phase where I need to stop the site isn't 45 minutes, but less...

It took a bit longer than usual this time. There was an initial db command that inexplicably took 10 minutes to run. It was basically a sanity check to make sure a table I use to rebuild the archive isn't in the way. Something like, "DROP TABLE foo IF EXISTS" and table "foo" did not exist, but the command took 600 seconds to run. *shrug*

I feel like you used to do daily downtime, maybe around 3am? Is this still the case?

I think it was 4am us/eastern time daily for backups.

No, a few years ago when I upgraded the server it no longer seemed necessary. I think the site can have a little trouble at 4am but it's almost not noticeable most of the time.

Didn't want to crate a new topic for it...but that wasn't just me that was down for a few hours today, right? I don't see any topics created here but I couldn't log in at all between 6pm and 1am or so EST.

I wasn't aware of that. Checking, I see forum posts being made during that time. So, either it was just you or perhaps some subset of the internet that got blocked or something. The site was up and running ok as far as I know.

Odd, I asked my buddy to go to the site and he had the same issue. Just wasn't loading anything up, not on mobile, the app, or on my PC. I had checked one of those 'is it up' sites and they said it was working, but neither him or I could even get the page to load.

I checked a little more. I can get a count of page hits by hour from the sitelog in the database. The numbers seem normal (1000s of hits each hour over the period you mentioned). There could still have been momentary outages that this missed, though. If there was a specific time it was happening, I could look more closely at that to see.

But, it may just be a fluke and not worth spending time on too. If it happens again, let me know.

I was having trouble that day too. I would have to refresh a couple times to get pages to load and this was the only site doing it.

One thing you guys can try the next time it happens if you want to be an uber nerd... traceroute. It shows the path along the network from you to the host you give it. So, if the network is messed up, you can see where it goes bad.

On Windows, open a cmd wind (windows key R, then type "cmd" return). Then type "tracert gametz.com" and hit return.

I had tried my phone both on LTE and WiFi as well as my PC all with the same result. What does traceroute check, on our end or on GTZs? This isn't a big issue obviously, I don't want you to have to keep going back and forth, I'm just curious as to why it wasn't widespread.

It shows the chain of how your network routes from where you are to where you're going. It's a list of hostnames/IP addresses. If something is wrong and you can't get to a host, it shows you where things are going wrong.

There are probably apps that do a traceroute from a phone.

Switching between LTE and wifi will often change the routing a lot and it's interesting that didn't help. But, sometimes network outages can be region based. I'm no expert.

I agree it's not a big issue and very likely--even if you did more to track it down--I probably couldn't do much to fix it. I wasn't going to post again, but then you guys revived this topic like you cared or something. smile
