Shining Ogre Fire Tactics: beat a strategy/tactical RPG
Grown-Ass Man: complete a game from the following series: Castlevania (pre-SotN), anything From Software, and Contra (and any other Konami 2D shooter, for that matter). The first individual game that I included was Cuphead. If you feel like you beat a balls hard game and are deserving of this icon, post on here and the community will deem whether you earn it or not.

Lastly, despite the fact that several games fit multiple categories, a particular completion only counts towards one icon. For example: Super Mario World would count towards the Super Mayrio icon, but not the Hoppin' & Boppin' one. I understand this could get a little confusing, but that's how it's gonna be!

It's a new year, but you guys know the drill at this point: you give me your system list, you tell me when you've beaten a game, and I keep track of it. Oh and badges. I never dreamed those would've caught on like they did last year, so expect more of the same in 2021.

In addition to keeping track of the overall leaders in games beaten and systems covered, I'm going to keep track of the former on a monthly basis as well. That way if someone has a particularly prolific 30 day stretch, that number will be immortalized in a separate category and won't be buried under Renaissance2K for all eternity .

That'll do it for this portion and see below for what's actually important, the lists!

Oh and I took down Dr Robotnik in Sonic 3 & Knuckles last night. That's the first time I've really had a go at Sonic 3 and man, I get why it's remembered so fondly by fans of Sega. Killer music, excellent graphics, varied and beautiful settings...the game has it all. Sonic 2 is good, but I rank 3 ahead of it.

Dude, I was cracking up last night when reading this. Although Sonic 3 obviously is nowhere near as difficult as Cyber Shadow, I definitely cursed a few times while playing it. The image of a grown man yelling at a screen is pretty hilarious when you think about it. No wonder my wife calls me a man child, lol.

You're talking about that stupid spinning barrel? I was getting so pissed off trying to figure it out. I ended up running out the stage time twice before lucking my way past it. It nearly drove me to consult a video, but I really didn't want to have to go that route.

Yeah when I was playing the Touryst, I had the windows open in my house and if there were any people passing by, they probably gave my house a wide berth. My dog put himself in his kennel at one point it got so bad - "nah fam, I'm out" basically. Normally I can curb my frustration but I was 100% committed to getting 100%. My wife later said "you probably shouldn't play that game anymore" lol. That's what the 100% is for.

LMAO at your dog. My wife also gave me grief about me getting so pissed at CS. I was certainly the 'old man yelling at his TV' that @Antipop mentioned. I have a pastor that I went to high school with who lives about 5 houses down and across the street, yesterday he was outside working in his yard while I was playing CS. I wonder if he heard me screaming at my TV, oops...

Another LittleBigPlanet game and another platform are checked off as I finished off LittleBigPlanet 3 for the PlayStation 4 this morning while my toddler slept in, oblivious to the time change.

Sumo Digital tried to squeeze LittleBigPlanet 3 by adding an in-game currency, a largely-ignorable quest list, and hub worlds that make the old "badges on a planet" map system somewhat useless. Other than the fact that I've finished the game and still don't know how to open the quest list without just mashing buttons repeatedly, the new system doesn't change much. The LittleBigPlanet engine seems to have evolved to the point that sticky edges and broken physics don't seem to rear their ugly heads as much, so that's nice.

The big gimmick this time around, though, are the switchable characters that you gradually collect as the game progresses. I don't know if this was intentional or not, but the most enjoyable new character is actually unlocked first. Oddsock turns the game into a colorful, friendly version of Super Meat Boy with his fast running speed, wall jumps, and speed boosters. The game's clumsiness melts away, for the most part, and turns into a breezy modern platformer with a goofy protagonist. I will say that Oddsock nearly gave up all of the goodwill he had earned during the final boss battle, but the less said about that the better.

The other two characters didn't leave too much of an impact on me. Toggle's ability makes for some interesting puzzle mechanics, but I wouldn't say he's more fun to play. And Swoop is just a nightmare to use. I give LittleBigPlanet 3 credit for introducing both a jetpack and the power of flight to the main characters and managing to make both skills a royal pain to use.

It could also be that I'm binging on the franchise, but I don't think LittleBigPlanet's humor or charm landed as well this time around as it did with the earlier games. As inconsequential as the plot to LittleBigPlanet 2 was, the supporting characters were diverse and memorable, and the cutscenes did a fairly good job of adding cartoon drama to an otherwise simple plot. In contrast, the supporting characters you meet in LittleBigPlanet 3 are forgettable (literally... as in, I would have forgotten about them completely if the game didn't give you their costumes). At least the story mode moves quickly.

Having devoted most of my gaming time to massive RPGs, I thought I was moving more slowly this year compared to last, but I had actually only beaten 8 games by this date in 2020. I'm nearly 1/4 of the way done with my owned platforms, and I still feel like I have a long way to go.

This afternoon, I'll continue with the LittleBigPlanet binge and start on Sackboy: A Big Adventure. LittleBigPlanet Vita is progressing slowly. It's been a tough few weeks at work, so my "pick up and play" moments have been somewhat limited.

5th of March, 21st overall, 2nd Microsoft Xbox One title
Donut County
If we had a 'Casual Game' badge this would count towards it, otherwise I don't see it applying to any current ones.

I had read what some others on here said about it and decided to give it a go largely b/c it was short. Game was entertaining as the dialog/story actually had me laughing out loud, plus the bunny love and a few other 'pop culture' type jokes were good. I think it took me maybe 2.5 hrs total and part of that was going back to earn some specific achievements as I 'completed' it for the full 1k points. If you have GamePass I'd say it's an easy game, easy 1k (if you care) and worth your time, it was a million times more enjoyable vs. the Untitled Goose Game that is of a similar ilk.

I think Call of the Sea, Fractured Minds and Morkredd are 3 other relatively short games that I might try to complete next/soon.

Game #23 and second for Vault Boy

Oblivion - Microsoft Xbox 360

Downloaded this on gamepass the other day. I didn't know that every single game you've ever played on an Xbox system is still saved in the cloud. It downloaded the game and a save I started in 2016 on the actual 360. I was 6 hours into the game and abandoned it. And over the course of yesterday and today I put in 6 hours and mainlined the main story. Just watched Martin turn into a dragon and kill Dagon. I forgot how much better the main story was in this game compared to Skyrim. I kind of want to play Morrowind now, but I just can't get past how terrible it looks. I'd love a full on remake of that game.

Game #18 PlayStation 4 The Quiet Man ------- 0/10 ---- David Cage probably thinks this game is amazing. Wouldn't shock me. But to anyone who doesn't know anything about this game, the main character is deaf. There are subtitles and dialogue in the beginning but after that, nothing. The game is a mish mash of live action cut scenes, Yakuza fighting and in game cut scenes. I'd prefer the QTE crap of David Cage games over the bad Yakuza gameplay it has, as some bosses can only be killed in a certain way. Most of it is live actions cut scenes... no subtitles to give the player any idea as to what's really going on. Scenes at length of characters talking but no way to know what they're saying. And these scenes are most of the game. In order to watch the game with dialogue and subtitles you have to beat it once, and then play it again for the subtitles/dialogue. Google-fu says it's a poor retelling of The Crow, which sorta makes sense. Also, the main character's mother is killed, and his girlfriend(?) later is played by the same actress. Guess he has some serious mommy issues. Seriously, this game is as bad as you've heard. Don't waste your time.

Oh, one of the best things about Bugsnax besides everything is there's a character who's basically Danny Devitos character from Its Always Sunny. Looks/sounds like him and all

I have now revisited a flawed but charming childhood classic for the Nintendo DS: Drawn to Life. It was fun looking back at it after so many years. The main characters are deeper than your typical kid's game. The platforming has never been amazing, but the levels are still enjoyable. It's a good game overall, though it's got problems. Its stages are big labyrinths that get formulaic after a while, and they're always interrupted by drawing segments that can last a long time for a dedicated artist. The side characters can be pretty one-dimensional. And some bosses are irritating to fight.

The sequel is much better, but the first game provides a good foundation for improvement. I'm glad I played it again. For anyone interested, I uploaded most of my drawings on Imgur. Enjoy! https://imgur.com/a/p2KaNmp

My first PS5 game down! #31 in total-Astro's Playroom. PlayStation 5 such a cool little tech demo that's more like a cute little 5hr platformer that I platinumed already. Great love letter to the 26 year Playstation history too with loads of Easter eggs.

With the PS5 it's easy to also see game total playtime. Don't think you could do that on 4.

Yeah when I was doing the speed runs for Astro it kept popping up on the PS XMB saying press here to see your total times. And one of my friends must have seen the pop up too cause he messaged me and said "Hey stop trying to beat my times in Astro!"

Pretty good, certainly better than the DS version I played years ago. About 5 hours long, so pretty short.

Having not yet overdosed on Sackboy, I finished Sackboy: A Big Adventure today as my very first true-blue PlayStation 5 game since picking up the console earlier this year.

FINALLY! A SACKBOY GAME THAT CONTROLS WELL!

No, it's not a LittleBigPlanet game. There's no editor, and while Sackboy has quite the wardrobe, the customization options end there. The quirky 2D multi-planed world is replaced with planets filled with levels that play like Super Mario 3D World levels made out of cloth and cardboard. The esoteric indie soundtrack is replaced with an original score that makes less-than-subtle nods to pop megahits, and in a couple rare (and awesome) cases, syncs the entire level and all the characters within it to the music.

I'm totally fine with that.

This is the most I've enjoyed a non-Nintendo 3D platformer in a long time. It's polished, it's beautiful, it's performant, and I appreciate that its main character finally has a semblance of his own personality instead of being the mute canvas (literally and figuratively) for the LittleBigPlanet games. Sackboy has the right number of moves, and he's not hindered by the limitations of a buggy engine. I enjoyed the later LittleBigPlanet games because they gave Sackboy - who is pretty vanilla on his own - a number of abilities and gadgets to play with, albeit in short bursts, but now, he's a joy to play even when he's running around with just the burlap on his back and a couple of punches.

It's not a revolutionary game. The graphics are tight and smooth, but they're not breaking new ground technologically, and it's not the greatest showcase for the PS5. (The game has the same "tug on a rope for goodies" use case that Astro's Playroom has, but it doesn't use the adaptive triggers, for some reason.) The planets borrow themes from past LittleBigPlanet games, and the enemies slap quirky designs on top of existing formulas. And that resemblance to Super Mario 3D World is more than just passing; the hub world, the sticker book, and the shifting level designs may as well be palette swaps for the Wii U original.

That's all fine, though, because even after a significant amount of playtime and a ton of levels, the game rarely feels repetitive. The first level is plucked straight from a children's storybook, and I remember thinking, "Ugh, am I really going to sit through six hours of this?" Ten minutes later, the environment had completely changed. And six hours later, that initial saccharine-soaked level is a distant memory.

And hell yeah, I loved those music-synced levels, even if the original songs don't do much for me.

Run, Sackboy, Run is an infinite runner with no story mode, and Sackboy's Prehistoric Moves is impossible to complete without friends willing to look just as stupid as you with PlayStation Move, so I think I've started the final game of my LittleBigPlanet marathon: LittleBigPlanet Karting, which I bought Day 1 long ago, played three races, and never touched since. Better late than never, I guess. In the background, I'm slowly making progress on LittleBigPlanet Vita, despite its painful touch mechanics.

#31 down: Super Mario Odyssey on Switch. That (with Super Mario Galaxy) gives me the Super Mario badge. I wanted to like this with all the hype it got (especially given how many other people liked it on here), but it was just OK for me. There were some creative ideas in it for sure, and the possession mechanic was cool, but most of the game is an endless collect-a-thon like an open-world Ubisoft game except with no story to speak of, no character progression, a protagonist I've never really understood the appeal of, and bosses that mostly ripped off old cartoons. The Ruined Kingdom boss was neat though. I guess I see the appeal if you like this type of gameplay, but it just wasn't really for me. (I am trying to give people the benefit of the doubt with these Mario games though. In the last year, I've played Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3, and the Lost Levels, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Odyssey, and I have a few more I plan on playing eventually mostly so I know what people are talking about when they reference them.)

Game #19 System #7

Nintendo Switch Cuphead - I'd rank the hardest bosses as follow:

1. Robot Guy

2. Dragon Dude

3. King Dice

4. The Devil

All the other bosses weren't that big of a deal for me to rank, but obviously YMMV.

Hard to really define this, it's a puzzler but maybe a walking sim, went with puzzle in Badge respects

Not a huge fan, especially of the final section. You control 2 characters and after the short prolog you have to push around this ball of light that's around the same diameter as the characters. The light from that ball keeps you alive, break it, walk outside of it's sphere of light or cross your characters such that the shadow from one touches the other and you die. This can and does break you brain if you cross the 2 up or if the camera swings around (which it doesn't really do). You also need to use the RB/LB buttons to interact with some switches or simple things like that to make progress, with each button set of the character you're controlling with that stick.
I didn't like a few things - it's a ball, so it can/will roll on it's own and you can't grab ahold of it, so you can't 'attach' one character to it which can result in mistakes with the 'pusher' sliding off of the ball or pushing it off to 1 side almost unintendedly so. By not being able to grab it you also can struggle to move the ball away from a wall/obstacle/cliff. If you attempt to keep both in touch with the ball instead, then that slows progress and some sections you need to move swiftly or use the a character to hold/block/interact with something. Essentially zero of the 'puzzles' were challenging - so now I'm thinking it ought to be considered a walking sim and earns me that badge, noted below. I largely died from my mistakes by crossing the characters up in my head or the poor nature of controlling the ball. You could press A to flip characters assignment to the sticks.
A few times the situation changes and you're not pushing the ball around directly, like early on you get a row boat and later the ball is taken from you and you interact with another light source to make progress. Both were welcomed, but the final change to the formula I didn't like and probably failed in that final scenario more then all my other failures combined. The last level overall has a shift in backdrop and beside having more color I didn't find that shift good in any other way.

I only earned like 4 achievements (from 22) and I'm not sure how much I'd be willing to earn more - there's some for finding murals in each level and completing each level w/out dying. I did redo the short prolog to earn that one and might replay an few more, but who knows. I thought I found some murals, so I'm not sure about those as I don't think I care enough to frustrate myself replaying more of it. You can also play it co-op, but I'm not sure if that would go any better. You'd need to be excellent communicators as in some areas the sphere of light is just barely large enough for a character to reach something that needs interacted with while the other positions the ball to move or mitigate shadows.

Update - I now consider it a walking sim, earning me the Guybrush Threepwood badge, Detroit-Become Human was other title.

Help Wanted: 50 Wacky Jobs Nintendo Wii

Essentially a collection of mini-games, all of which use motion controls of some sort. You complete "jobs" to get money to buy things and save the world through the power of consumerism from various "meteors". As far as I can tell this is a game without many documented clears. I had a blast playing it and would recommend it to anyone that doesn't mind motion controls.

Once you've seen and done everything you feel like the game has to offer, for all intents and purposes I say it's beaten. Kinda like arcade games; play 'em until you're satisfied with what you've accomplished and count it as done. Doesn't mean you have to stop playing though, obviously.

Out of curiosity, what's your clear criteria? Is there a certain score you're trying to attain? Just want to make sure you're working towards some kind of a goal aside from just playing each game.
