Maybe the peripheral badge could also include VR games (since you'd be using a peripheral headset), games you play with a racing wheel, Ring Fit (since you use the ring) on Switch, etc.? Seems like there would be a lot of different possibilities.

@Bleed_DukeBlue Yeah VR is a tricky one, since the headset IS the console. Do agree that a racing wheel, Wii Balance Board and Ring Fit could count.

Back to VR - I'd hesitate to make a VR badge, since you NEED one of a few particular consoles to earn it. Same with say a handheld badge or 8/16-bit badge. After typing that I realize that for this peripheral badge generally requires a light gun or plastic guitar, etc to earn, but there were light guns for several home consoles, there's a wheel for nearly every console starting around the PS1/Saturn. And there's a handful of other peripherals that aren't guns/wheels, so yeah I think we're good. I'd want badges to be earnable by as many folks as possible, since the main reason I'm looking to change the Zelda one is that it is simply too limited.

Yeah, I agree that a VR badge would be too restrictive. I was just trying to think of more ways to open up possibilities for a peripherals badge. I figured that, since you need a console or a computer for some VR headsets, the headset itself was like a peripheral in those cases (but I get it that some VR headsets are standalone, so it varies). I like the general move to try to make badges as accessible as possible.

Game #52 Deathloop PlayStation 5 8.5/10

I stopped caring about badges a while ago, not sure if I've gotten any new ones since my last one.

At first, I didn't like this, but it grew on me. Gameplay is king here, as the game really doesn't make you care about anyone besides Colt and Julianne. Even then, there's nothing too interesting about them. There are slight difficulty spikes at points, and the best skill is the linking enemies to kill one to kill all the linked ones. I don't think I'll bother with the Platinum though.

5th of Dec, 114th overall, 13th Microsoft Xbox One title
Layers of Fear
Badge: Counts towards Raccoon City badge - Feels like a bit of a stretch, as there was basically zero survival elements, but I decided to play it based on searching for Survival Horror titles and finding it listed on a few sites.

I actually enjoyed this title, very well done and I wonder how it might have felt in VR since it's a bit trippy at times and was all in First Person view. I partially picked this by mistake since I thought it was a Microsoft Xbox 360 title, of which I want to beat a 2nd game on there, but I was wrong, this came out in the XB1 generation. I didn't seek out every little secret, but I did search 80% of the rooms pretty well and kept my eye out for things. As said above, there wasn't much of any survival elements and the sense of horror was a bit weak too. Dying was of nearly zero consequence and what kills you was less scary and more curious - granted I don't thankfully get jump scared too much and similar to RE7, I think VR would have changed this 100%.

Well that's half way toward the final 2 badges I'm seeking. I might be able to re-try Bleed_DukeBlue for top spot, once I can knock out 2 more and I've already selected them. But my personal goal was 75% of the 32 badges, so 24 of them gets me to my goal.

In case anyone noticed, we went over 64k chars again. We had lost the last about 10 badge definitions, so I went and removed a little junk to get it back. Pop had made every listed person in the monthly lists italicized, so 4x % symbols wrapped all initially 30 members in each monthly list. I dropped them all from Jan & Feb, but will drop more soon. I also trimmed all completed months to not list folks who completed zero games. I had done that up to June or July a while back, but needed to 'save' more chars.

I blame it on Bleed_DukeBlue - with him beating all these games all of a sudden and earning badges, as they 'consume' a decent amount of chars each. - I'm kidding. I think Pop just got a little over zealous with the formatting and having double sets of %, +, =, * and other symbols all through the OP.

I was 100% joking, especially since I haven't given you your last 2 badges yet. By dropping the % symbols used in the monthly leader boards section, I saved 1440 characters I think. Well that 1440 is vs what Pop had initially, me removing the folks who beat zero titles in each month saved even more.

Character count goes up listing any game that's completed, but I think we'll be okay through the end of the year now... I hope.

I like the badges and will keep them for next year. After Sarna gives me his new badge request after beating all the games this year then there will be no new ones added. 32 this year was a bit much, will be lower next year.
I like that the badges push me to try different genres and if anyone doesn't want a badge then don't request one, pretty simple.

By far the strangest and most unique game I've ever played. Pretty simple too, as you just buy the game and wait 400 days (literally). There's more to it than that of course, with isolation, loneliness and sense of purpose being key points of the game which I really felt at times.

Sounds like how Seaman felt after the first couple days.

Except you don't just wait, you have to play every day and feed/warm/moisten the thing.

Also, I think Seaman only takes 30 days or so, not 400 thankfully

You should have got more. I see you beat at least 2 RPGs so you should have been given that. I'll say that for me, getting everyone's games recorded and the OP updated is a fair bit of work. So if someone doesn't report that they should earn a badge, I'm simply not going to follow up and push one on them.
If your take is F'em then why should I take the extra effort to sort out that you earned one after you beat game X. However if you say 'game X earned me badge Y after beating Z already', them I'm happy to record that.

What did you think? I ask, because this is my favorite game, and I'm always curious if it hits people the same way as it did me.

Also, belated happy birthday @Gypsy, and badges are fun. I like having random targets to work toward, and, like @Slickriven, I like that the badges encouraged me to try genres I wouldn't normally try. I didn't like all of the games I tried that way, but some turned out to be great.

The 60FPS is a game-changer, IMO. It adds even more smoothness to a game that's already near-seamless. Definitely recommend turning that on.

Also, it had 3D audio on the PS4, but I finally got around to using it this time. Played the whole game with headphones, it was pretty intense.

No More Heroes 2 (Switch) down. my 8bitdo Pro+ has been having random disconnect errors, so I went to pick up a Pro2 this morning to finish this off. Took two shots to kill Batt's OBNOXIOUS second phase, I died like 8 times last night and the controller kept crapting out on me, probably gonna release it to the wild with a hefty discount. I've played for hours without issues, and sometimes it goes off every 5-15 minutes. It's probably a loose connector or something.

Finishing my 36th and final platform for 2021 and resolving an incomplete playthrough that's been sitting in my backlog for nearly two decades, I finished Metroid Prime for the GameCube earlier today.

Despite never wanting to spend money on the hobby they considered accursed, in Christmas of 2002, my parents gifted me two brand new games - Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for the Playstation 2, and Metroid Prime for the GameCube. I cannot put into words how stoked I was to be holding two games that were barely two months old in my hands, and that they had come from my parents, of all people. When the gift exchange was over, my dad caught me oggling the manuals as we put the wrapping paper into trash bags. "The guy at GameSpot told me," he said, "'Somebody's about to have a good Christmas.'" Vice City was the follow-up to one of the biggest games of the still-young gaming generation, and Metroid Prime was being hailed as a revelation, both as one of Nintendo's best games in years and as one of the most smooth and stunning transitions of a classic gaming franchise to the third dimension.

Most of this praise was coming from longtime fans of the franchise that - after months of fist-shaking and accusing Nintendo of sacrificing their sacred cow to chase industry trends - were completely shocked at how well exploration-heavy 2D combat platformer transformed into a masterful 3D adventure game that inherited such a complete genetic snapshot of its predecessors. The combat remained sharp, but the focus of the game remained on cracking open your surroundings and enhancing your arsenal to remove obstacles - and enemies - that stand in your way. Just like Super Metroid, which served up equal helpings of expansive outdoor environments and claustrophobic caverns, Metroid Prime takes you through the many levels of a new planet; starting in an open, lush green field and throwing you into a cryptic military stronghold, and everything in-between. First-person platforming, Morph Ball gymnastics, and a mastery of the GameCube's unique single-stick controller were necessary to progress, as scanning every interesting pixel for data and shooting down everything that moves would only get you so far.

I wasn't one of those longtime fans. I had picked up Metroid Fusion alongside my first Game Boy Advance just a month before Metroid Prime landed in my lap, and while it a lot as my maiden Metroid voyage, it would be another few years before I finished it. With barely any exposure to the series outside of that, most of Prime's transliterary triumphs and francise nods - the familiar weapons, the musical cues, the recurring Chozo lore - were all lost on me. The game found its way onto my radar because the entire industry was raving about it, though, and there was plenty for a relative newcomer like me into which to tap. As the generation was swiftly teaching me that I'd never fully get the hang of dual stick first-person shooters, Prime's lock-heavy, single-stick combat mechanics were more than just adequate; they were downright brilliant. Aiming, strafing, and precision shooting were all effortless by the time you pick up your first upgrade, to the point that - when the game was re-released for the Wii with motion controls and more traditional aiming - I put down my Wiimote fairly quickly in favor of the original's controls.

More than the controls, though, what I remember most about that first, aborted playthrough was the attention to detail paid to the environment and to Samus especially. Possibly the best example of this, Samus' Charge Beam creates a giant, bright bullet that wipes out many early enemies in a single shot. If you stand against a wall and fire the blast at point blank range, the light will shine brightly on Samus' face, the reflection of which can be seen - blinking! - on the inside of the Power Suit's helmet. That same helmet would get foggy if you walked through mist, get splattered if a toxic enemy blew its guts upon its demise, and would turn into a static, distorted mess when encountering the attacks of an energy-based enemy. A fully decked out Samus has four different visors to use, each of which is simultaneously indispensible in certain situations and during certain encounters and downright disorienting - by design - if you're trying to cheese your way with them through an environment looking for secrets. Blooms, lighting effects, enemy movements, and even the game's HUD and title screen (THAT MENU THEME MUSIC...) demonstrate a serious attention to detail that was rare for anything but a well-nourished first-party title.

So, no, I was not a longtime Metroid fan when I dove into Prime. The game was the first time I picked up the Varia Suit, the first fleeting look at Ripley, and my first (horrifying!) encounter with a real deal Metroid enemy, without the cold comfort of the Ice Beam to make the fight easier. In fact, I paused that original playthrough - distracted by college and feeling lost and disoriented on the strange planet - just as I was about to pick up the Ice Beam for the first time. The game has since seen two sequels, the third of which seems to be stuck in development hell, and one beautiful re-release package (with another rumored to be on the horizon), and all the while, I look back on Prime as one of the most optimized, well-crafted games of the generation.

That saved game survived multiple gaming purges and 19 years of moves, but when the Metroid bug bit me this year (thanks to Frank encouraging us to play through the original Metroid and its Zero Mission reimagining), I decided it was time to start from scratch and dive back in again. Years later, the game's 4:3 viewport makes you feel like you're viewing the planet through a keyhole (which, honestly, appropriate given the "helmet eye's view" that the game works so hard to cultivate), and many of the world's lush environments seem to have hogged polygonal resources from the various enemies you encounter. (The debut of the Wave Trooper sticks out as particularly egregious.) Those gripes aside, the game still controls and plays beautifully, the care to detail is still obvious, and the experience is still worth taking, especially with the original old school GameCube controller. Now, having played through the first four mainline Metroid games, I had a chance to truly appreciate how a game with such different bones still managed to capture the experience of the 2D staples that came before it.

19 days to finish A Link to the Past before the curtain falls on 2021. That will be it for me, other than one last completion that's been on the sidelines for the past few months.

Yeah, I think I was around 55 hours when I beat it. As I played, I tried to do every side mission before moving onto the next main story mission, but toward the end I got less strict about that and mostly powered through to the end. So, I had a good chunk of the work done by the time I beat the game, but there was definitely still a lot to do. I really didn't think I'd ever go for 100% with how repetitive the gameplay is, but idk, I'm somehow still enjoying it! Having a ton of characters to choose from really helps. Plus, some of the later side missions start to get really challenging. Also, it's fun completing the quests, and there are a crapload of them! Based on how many etheral stones I still need for the last 2 quests I need to complete, I have either 6 or 7 missions remaining (not sure if the last one will give me a stone or not). Then, I'll just have whatever missions/quests that appear for the character you unlock. I should be done just in time for my son to get the DLC for Christmas! lol

Big CONGRATS to @Renaissance2K on beating a game for all of 36 of his systems - that is very impressive!

I've got 1 left and am hoping to knock out my Commodore 64 to get all 26 of mine... some systems were a slog, so having 10 more would have been tough. Also Metroid Prime is an excellent game. I enjoyed reading your thoughts on the game. I personally picked it up a while after it was out and got it bundled with the Wavebird from some K-Mart package deal. That was a excellent combo, I actually bought 2 and sold the controller to a roommate and might have traded the game on here. I can't think of a game from my 25+ GC library that I enjoyed more than Prime, but the Phendranda Drifts music was my favorite track, I have a 30 min run of it that I'll listen to when working still.

@Kommie I do agree that an action/adventure badge to sort of replace the Zelda badge is a challenge as those 2 tags get applied a bit too liberally to games. I do want to create that badge and see how it goes. Hopefully I'll get folks saying they beat a game for it from the likes of Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Splinter Cell, Carrion or solid games like that, but we'll see.

#88 down: Garfield Kart on PC (Steam)- It's not bad, but it's no Mario Kart. It's clearly trying to be that though. Some of the power-ups are really cheap like this UFO thing that takes up the entire track and picks up whoever drives into it for several seconds. That (alongside my previous clear of Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch) should cover it for the Race Drivin' badge.

Not actually buying the game until I finish it has strongly curbed the urge to hoard everything, but I still have a smaller pile of games that I've somehow accumulated but never finished. I'm hoping to make a dent in those in 2022.

I also need to finish Horizon: Zero Dawn at some point. Yeesh.

#89 down: I just finished one I've been working on off and on for several months: Age of Empires. What a great game! The last time I played this was probably about 15 years ago. Until this year, I hadn't had a PC that wasn't for work in a long time. It was time for some nostalgia. Some of the scenarios are crazy difficult. (Here's one monk vs. an entire army. And go. Here's one archer. You can find other people from your army, but first you have to fight your way out of a corner of the map surrounded by lions. I'm not even kidding about either of these scenarios.) Still, it was fun.

With this clear and my previous clear of Crusader Kings III, I should have what I need for the Brotherhood of Nod badge.

My dog's gonna die soon. Seems several of us have lost pets this year, so I figured I'd tell you guys. Sad for sure, but a long time coming. frown

In more positive discussion, I've thought of two possible ideas for my custom badge, and I'm curious which one people more interested in.
-The first is Koiby, obtained by beating two Kirby series games. He's got an exciting Switch game coming next year and has dipped his red toe in a bunch of genres, plus each game is fairly short. I think a lotta players would be tempted/not inconvenienced to get this one.

-The second is Cross the Streams, obtained by beating two games that cross over two series (Mario & Sonic, Street Fighter x Tekken, Crash Purple and Spyro Orange, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, etc.). This one was out-of-the-box enough to be interesting to me, and I'm curious which games people would pick.

@SupremeSarna I'm sorry to hear about your dog. Having lost a cat in mid Nov, I know all to well that hurt as this cat was more like a dog than most. So close to generally a positive time with the holiday's, is crummy...

On the badges front, since we've sought to eliminate franchise only badges, I'm more interested in the Cross the Streams one as it becomes more flexible in terms of genres and such.
According to a quick look on HowLongToBeat suggests there are 35 games with Kirby in the title, but it feels like there are more Capcom vs. titles that than alone.
Were you thinking games like Alien vs. Predator or Mario vs. Donkey Kong would count for Cross? What about Smash Bros or Sony's All-Star Battle rip off of Smash?

Joni can't hold her bladder anymore and seems miserable all around. She's very old, so it's about time. I'm sorry about your former "dog" as well--the passing of a pet is too cruel.

I was picturing CtS would only cover crossovers of completely different series, so Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam--a crossover of Mario & Luigi with bad Paper Mario--wouldn't count. They're both Mario series after all. Though I suppose any game that advertises itself as a crossover or collaboration, like Smash Bros. or PlayStation All-Stars, would count. At the very least players could make arguments in favor of their game counting for the badge. Games that have a single guest character or something, like Link in Mario Kart 8, don't count unless that crossover is very important.

@Slickriven Make that 8 :). #90 down: Gone Home on PC to finish up the Guybrush Threepwood badge alongside my recent clear of Virginia. Getting those last six is going to be rough, because I'm leaving for the holidays in a few days and then will only have my Switch, but we'll see. The ones I have left are:

Pocket Monster
Sasori Vader
JRPG
Bomber Manly
Shining Ogre Fire Tactics

I should be able to knock out Pocket Monster, since I already have one Pokémon clear this year and am about 1/4 of the way through Brilliant Diamond (which I'll finish while I'm out of town). I have one clear already for Sasori Vader, and I'm going to try to beat the second tonight (probably Battlefront 2, since I'm part of the way through that already), but we'll see. I am very close to finishing Scarlet Nexus for JRPG. I just left it unbeaten because I wanted to finish up some trophies before going for the second playthrough for the platinum. I'll beat it before the end of the year for sure. The second JRPG might be tough. I might try something like an early shorter YS, or I could finish Final Fantasy I which I got pretty far into at the beginning of the year but then got bored with. The biggest hurdles for me are Bomber Manly (I don't own any Bomberman games and have no idea where to start) and Shining Ogre Fire Tactics (because I don't have any clears for it yet, and these games tend to be long).

Since getting a PS1Digital and a MODE installed in my PlayStation, I've had Tekken 3 on the backburner with the slow and steady goal of creating a new 100% save. Today, following a clumsy, clumsy Arcade Mode romp with Dr. Boskonovich, I achieved that goal.

image

And that's where the trouble started...

I've already spoken at length about Tekken 3's significance to my gaming history - the lead up to its launch was inarguably the most I've ever been consumed by hype, excepting maybe the release of Final Fantasy VIII - so I won't repeat that all here. It's a sensational game, a high point for the franchise, and an excellent example of an arcade port making compromises without feeling compromised. Considering licensing complications and performance concerns, I was really pleasantly surprised to find it in the line-up for the PlayStation Classic, though nothing beats playing it on real hardware with a CRT.

I picked up a DexDrive pretty early on in the PlayStation lifecycle. Despite reformats, accidental deletions, and other disasters, many of those original saves have survived decades in the archive. For whatever reason, though, every save that doesn't have a corresponding digital release as a PS1 Classic disappeared. Not too many of these losses were very devastating, but years and years of survival records, usage statistics, and other cross sections of my time with the game are lost bits in the void now. I could just download a near-equivalent save with all the game's content unlocked - there's one on a common demo disc, even - but I liked the idea of re-building it myself and capturing all the usage data along the way.

And so, armed with a new souped-up PlayStation and a mission, I set out on the road back to 100%, playing a few minutes at a time to unlock every mode, character, ending, and costume. It was a very different experience from that one super-charged April release day when I turned down all the difficulty settings, shortened the rounds, and managed to plow through the game a dozen times in less than an afternoon. I kept the default settings and gritted my teeth through the longer rounds and occasional bouts where my limited fighter skills rammed me into a figurative brick wall. More than that, though, I decided to unlock the game's two joke characters - Dr. Boskonovich and Gon - before any of the others. Unlocking the good doctor requires playing through the game's frustrating Tekken Force mode - a janky beat-em-up where your character can go from thriving to dead in a stolen split-second (a process that took many more attempts than I care to admit) whereas Gon can be unlocked as a reward for revealing each of the game's mid-bosses, or much more quickly using a trick with the game's Survival mode.

Gon found a home on my Character Select screen fairly quickly, and Dr. B did finally take up residence himself after a long delay (after all, no doctor hesitates to keep a patient waiting), leaving a battery of Arcade Mode playthroughs to unlock the remaining characters and endings.

It didn't take long to realize that I had seriously screwed up. Gon and Dr. B are both Oddjobs, in a way. Gon is a third the height of every other character, and Dr. B's bad back means he spends most of each fight either hunched over or squirming on the ground waiting for his pain meds to pick in. With these two weirdos as the only occupants of the mid-boss pool, I fought them every time I played through Arcade Mode until most of the roster was completed. That meant many slow, frustrating battles trying to chip away at these two fools while they stared up at me from the bottom floor, farting on my ankles. ...No, literally farting on me. For such a celebrated, respected entry in the series, there sure are a lot of attacks involving noxious gases escaping your body.

It took a few months to fill out the roster entirely and another still to unlock each of the game's unique endings. With those out of the way, a few more long steady grinds of repeated fights with certain characters unlocked some special costumes, followed by a few concluding runs through Arcade Mode to fill out the missing characters' names from the Theater Mode. And with one final bellyflop from Dr. Boskonovich - the source of so much pain throughout this adventure - my save was complete and stored in the cloud where it hopefully won't be annihilated again.

Doing this for Tekken 3 makes me want to do the same thing for a lot of my other fighters whose saves have been lost to time, or which were never completed in the first place. I don't think I'll have time before the end of the year to take any up, save for one smaller Tekken-related mission, but there's still plenty of A Link to the Past to work through. Navigating the Dark World is a lot more frustrating than I was expecting.

6th of Dec, 115th overall, 2nd Microsoft Xbox 360 title
Rocket Knight

In my focus to get 2 games beat on as many consoles as I can, Rocket Knight got picked partly b/c HowLongToBeat told me it was pretty short and I had it digitally. Game wasn't too bad, but frustrating in a few areas, especially in the final section with lots of harmful barriers and switches needing hit to expose platforms on short timers to allow you to progress. Some of my frustration came from using the analog stick and a bit too often dashing diagonally vs. to the L/R or even Up. I eventually switched to the D-pad and that was somewhat better.

I'm down to needed just a 2nd title on my GC and DC. And then at least 1, maybe 2 on my C64 mini.

---- Badge Update ----
DarkFact you can ignore this wry smile

For next year I'm going to make the following changes official, I had posted about potentially dropping some before, so this is more/less confirming that.
Every description now states 2 games are needed for a badge, since that was a point of confusion before. They're now in alpha order as well.
I'm making a few tweaks to the descriptions, noted below:

2nd Amendment: beat 2 FPS's
Bear & Bird: beat 2 3D platformers and/or collect-a-thons
BFFL: beat 2 primarily cooperative games (with a friend) - online or couch
updated - Billy Mitchell Card: beat 2 games from the pinball, classic arcade or card battle genres ! Renamed, added card battle genre here
updated - Bo Knows: beat 2 sports games, complete a single season ! Added clear requirements, triggering credits for non-season style games still counts
Brotherhood of Nod: beat 2 RTS's
Destroy the Core: beat 2 SHMUP's
Egg: beat 2 puzzle games
Girly: beat 2 games predominantly targeted towards a feminine audience
Grown-Ass Man: beat 2 challenging games
Guybrush Threepwood: beat 2 games from the point-&-click, text adventure, or walking simulator genres
Heavy Machine Gun: beat 2 run n' gun games
updated - Hyrulian Hero: beat 2 action/adventure titles, similar to the Zelda franchise ! Expanded to include non Zelda games, 'spirit' is still of Zelda style, so Uncharted/Tomb Raider style titles
JRPG: beat 2 JRPGs
Metroidvania: beat 2 open ended 2D platformers that focus on backtracking
Ninja Gayden: beat 2 3D hack-and-slash titles
new Now You're Playing with Plastic: beat 2 games using non-standard controllers (Light-Gun, musical instrument, steering wheel, dance-pad, etc) -- Hat tip to Bleed_DukeBlue as I wanted to get Light-Gun games in, but his suggestion works out better.
Pile Drivin': beat 2 belt-scrolling brawler/beat 'em ups
Quest for Peace: beat 2 predominately superhero focused titles
Raccoon City: beat 2 survival horror games
Race Drivin': beat 2 racing games
updated - Sasori Vader: beat 2 games in the Star Wars or overall space universes ! Expanded to include any Space themed title, so Star Trek, Aliens, Elite Dangerous, etc
Shining Ogre Fire Tactics: beat 2 strategy/tactical RPGs
updated - Street Fightin': beat 2 1-on-1 fighters - beat standard arcade mode with 2+ characters OR beat 10+ match story mode ! Clarified clear requirements
updated - Platforming Mayrio: beat 2 platforming games, similar to the core Mario titles ! Renamed, basically merged with the dropped Hoppin' & Boppin' badge
Vault Boy: beat 2 open world and/or Western RPGs
updated - You're Winner: beat 2 games with <55 review OR user score on Metacritic, or justify how your game sucked ! Expanded the classification of eligibility

Not yet confirmed, but @SupremeSarna by clearing the most games gets to create a new badge, he's suggested the 2 noted below, I prefer his 2nd suggestion, if you care, comment on which you like better.
Option1 - Koiby: beating 2 Kirby franchise games. - This limits options to only about 35 Nintendo platform only titles
Option2 - Cross the Streams: beat 2 games that cross over 2+ series (Mario & Sonic, Street Fighter x Tekken, Crash Purple and Spyro Orange, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, etc.) - This has a much large scope of possible titles and genres

Once one of Sarna's selections gets chosen we'll have 28 badges for '22 and I will not be adding/removing any during the year. We'll be down from the 32 this year, see removed badges below. I will put these into the soon to be newly created Forum Topic for 2022.

Removed badges - all but 1 get dropped due to being single franchise focused:
Mega Manly: beat a game in the Mega Man universe -- Games would be under the Run/Gun badge
Super Sonic: beat a game in the Sonic universe -- Games would be under Mario platformer badge
Dankey Kang: beat a game that features a member of the Donkey Kong clan as a main character -- Games would be under platformer badge
Hoppin' & Boppin': beat a side scrolling, 2D platformer (non-Metroidvania) -- Merged, so games would be under that badge
Bomber Manly: beat a game in the Bomberman franchise -- Games would be under Egg badge?? - No one earned this, so who cares ghost
Pocket Monster: beat a game in the Pokémon franchise -- Games would be under Billy Mitchell Card badge

@SupremeSarna I couldn't see the first badge.
If you view your posts on imgur and select 'Get Share Links' and then 'BBCode (Forums)' and drop that into a forum it'll work. All you need to do is replace the [ ] around img with { } and drop the / in the trialing one.
If you do that and get it working, then just put 2 smaller values near the end like 35 35 before the ending { img }

EDIT - I got it:

So the 'normal' imgur link can work with 2 tweaks. Normal is https :// imgur. com/ abcxyz - to get that to work on GTZ you put an i. before imgur and a .jpg or .png at the end.
Note you can't have a space btwn the {img} and the link at the start. The 35 35{img} at the end will limit it to 35x35 pixels on here.

Does this work? Let me try:

EDIT: Can I just email it to you or something? I've edited the link ten times and it still won't show.

If you want, @SupremeSarna - but I won't need it if that badge doesn't gain more interest over the CtS one. I think the issue with the Kirby one is that when I click on the link you posted ~4 hrs ago, I get nothing, and the one you have above says 'it's no longer available' - so GTZ can't link to a dead/missing image.
PM me for my email

Well, that didn't take long. I played through the original Tekken for PlayStation today... as Devil Kazuya.

Tekken - the very first PlayStation game I ever played, and the game that convinced me to hop on the Sony train instead of waiting on the Nintendo 64 - has not aged well. Pretty much every one of its successors is still just as playable as the day it was released, but the original is a fuzzy, janky mess, despite being an amazing arcade translation. Unlike Tekken 3, I still have my original save from when I first picked up the game all those years ago, but I never quite finished unlocking everything.

Each of Tekken's nine unlockable characters are brought into the fold easily enough. Play through Arcade Mode with each of the starting characters to unlock their corresponding mid-boss, and do it once without continuing to unlock Heihachi, the final boss. That just leaves one last trinket: Kazuya's secret third costume, which turns his skin purple and introduces the fanbase to the character that would ultimately become Devil Kazuya; the Macguffin that would drive much of the series lore for decades. Infamously, to unlock the Devil costume, you have to perfectly complete eight levels of the Galaga challenge rounds that play as the game loads.

That's easier said than done. Each of the eight challenge rounds has five waves, the second of which is chock full of the iconic green Boss Galagas that take two shots to kill. You get one continue, if you know how to trigger it, and if you want to play with double ships, you have to earn it the hard way. It's a brutal challenge. I made a few runs at it in the early days of the game but only got as far as Round 3 before deciding I had better uses for my time than hone underdeveloped vintage arcade skills. The game's strategy guide didn't make it clear if the costume would stick around after being unlocked, or if you had to repeat the same Galaga gauntlet on load every time you wanted to use it.

But when a random YouTube video showed that your save file's message changes after Devil Kazuya is unlocked, I thought about making another attempt at the game's final unlockable. How did it go?

image

If you can manage to unlock your second ship by blitzing through the first challenge round, the task becomes much more manageable, especially if you know the enemy movement patterns ahead of time. Probably 80% of my time was spent making that happen, with the remaining 20% going to mastering the remaining rounds. The eighth challenge round concluded with the same fanfare as all the others. The 3D Namco logo zoomed on screen. And the ever-familiar orchestral hit sounded when I scrolled to Kazuya and pressed Start.

The costume doesn't unlock any special moves or abilities, like Devil's laser - ever the boon to young cheesers like myself - from later games. It also looks somewhat ridiculous amidst a panel of grounded character designs. It is something, though, that I hadn't actually seen in motion until the aforementioned YouTube video, having only existed as a grainy screenshot in the official Bradygames strategy guide from 1995. The actual playthrough was nothing remarkable, slogging through the seven other basic characters before getting slammed down repeatedly by Lee and his infinite kicks and ultimately smacking down Heihachi with swift justice. All this... with purple pecs.

Had a third idea for my badge of choice, if any one cares. Though I probably won't choose it this year.
-Makin' Money with Mini-Games, earned by beating two games that are made out of mini-games (Game & Watch Gallery, WarioWare, Rhythm Heaven, a billion licensed games, etc.).

@Kommie @DarkFact - Yep. Unlike when Pop was running this, if you don't mention badges when you complete titles, I will not do the leg work to figure out if you earned one.
I don't have the time or desire to figure out if folks who dislike something 'earned' that something.
You'll be given the badge icon that DarkFact suggested above - congrats!

But seriously, if you don't care that's perfectly fine with me. The group of 30 has earned 201 collectively, so some folks care and I don't mind tracking and handing out those that are earned and requested.
201 from 30 is 6.7 avg per.
There are 7 folks who only have 0-2 badges, so if I drop them and those 8 badges (some of those folks more/less dropped off entirely) then we get 195 earned from 23 people or 8.5 per - heck Kommie you've got 8, so you're right on average.

It's 100% voluntary, if you care and want them, mention that you think you earned one after beating the 2nd title and note your first title. If you don't care then I don't see what the issue is - BYOB sounds good.

Topic   Can you beat a game for all of your systems in 2021?
