So I've been eyeballing differences between legit and pirate carts for DS recently, even picked up a very fake Ecclesia cart for educational purposes (have a legit copy to pair it up against) and I'm picking up on most of the telltale things (Minor flaws in Nintendo logo, spacing issues on back layout, obvious stamping defects, splotchy serial number prints, high contrast on label prints) but one thing I recently ran across in a recent purchase gave me pause; I picked up Megaman ZX and ZX Advent in a two-fer, and ZX seems 100% fine. ZX Advent seems MOSTLY fine, except for the back, which doesn't have a serial number printed on it at all.

I haven't placed a legit cart up to it, or a fake one up to it, to check for any consistencies yet, but in all other aspects the cart seems fine, it's just that the SN portion on the back is completely clean, nothing there. This a practice possibly with late life cycle DS reprints, or am I missing something?

Honestly starting to feel grossed out that this is something I need to keep tabs on this closely. Can't even use the "Does it work on DSi" test, because that Ecclesia fake works totally fine on my DSi XL, so. But basically, question boils down to: Can legit carts not have a SN print?

With Gameboy carts from all of the old systems I've had to be super careful. I got ripped off many times on Ebay for fake carts and even Gamestop unknowingly (I hope) sells fakes. It sucks.

They are getting GOOD at making them look legit. I bought an infinity space off ebay, looked completetly legit in every way and now its the smallest details they are missing. Those obvious things are a thing of the past

also picked up all three castlevanias for ds recently, again looked totally legit.. until they would freeze within 30 mins to an hour of playing.

putting a serial number on back is easy, the counterfits I have have serial numbers on them. its just a matter of printing them on the back, depends on how much time the person making them is willing to put into making them look legit

I'm very glad I have all the DS games I want. I also only buy CIB which helps but I have seen CIB bootlegs.

Yeah I see quite a few CIB zelda phantom hourglass bootleg on Ebay, only reason I know they are bootleg is because they are being sold from China, but they are complete. Honestly been wondering how good the cover art and manual are just to buy for those and possibly call my legit cart my complete lol

Anyone got DS carts they know are legit that don't have Serial Numbers printed on the back? Possibly a late-cycle Square/Capcom reprint?

I'll share some pics later with some stuff I'm finding. This is the first game I've gotten that just has no serial.

SE still has some DS games on their webstore right? Probably the best bet to check.

They do, and I actually ordered one recently. I'll check when it comes in.

Not positive Square will necessarily be indicative of practices by Capcom but it'd be a good data point regardless.

From first hand experience, the code on the back of cartridges can fade, or be completely removed, if cleaned with rubbing alcohol. This isn't always the case, however if I had to guess, that would be it.

Let me see if I still have an old bootleg guide I made for my work. I go pretty in depth on how to identify them.

Sad its coming to this. Can't open up these carts to check boards. Would a homebrew app be able to scan the cart and tell if its a copy or would the rom be legit?

They're probably identical.

Unfortunately the only way to tell is physically looking at the cartridge.

Bootleg DS cartridges used to not work in DSi or 3DS, but I've found newer ones are compatible. I've come across some really good fakes, but they all usually have a tell. If I find my guide I'll make a topic on GameTZ to share the knowledge. I took my own photos for it too, using various cartridges from my bootleg collection.

Why the gif? I have a collection of them. Most of them were given to me, otherwise they were going to get thrown away.

That's where they belong. I once bought a large bootleg collection at a garage sale just to destroy them. :)

One of these days I will go through and get rid of the ones that don't work or don't save, although I've been wanting to use the shells to put flash drives in.

I think it'd be a cool project, and a good use of the shells. Plus I won't be harming any legitimate games!

I did buy Ecclesia fake, specifically because I wanted a reference if I was going to be picking up a game that expensive.

Did you return it or just eat the $ since you knew?

I ate it. It was like, eleven bucks, it'll be fun to set it on fire someday, I just felt like it'd be disingenuous to pretend I didn't know it was a bootleg when I bought it. That's not my やり方

Anyone at the point of looking to collect for the DS? There were so many games released for it.

That's not my 修身

I was looking to get all the best games on DS. I did it! Short of getting the Advance Wars, FFs and DQs, that is.

Phantom Hourglass looked like it might be okay to try, pass on the Spirit Tracks. I didn't find either worth the asking cost to find out, which was sub-$20.

Would have loaned mine to you, you know that. If it tickles your fancy next time, just shoot an offer.

We'll see. Went hard and fast on DSi this time around, I'll be going slow and easy next time.

I fudging hate doodling glyphs on the DS screen to kill bosses. Hopefully Portrait of Ruin and OoE dump that crap. I'm actually thinking about firing up a DS equivalent and swinging my monitor 'round in Tate for a taste, could be interesting.

They dropped it like a rock.
