Welcome to The GameTZ Game Club! This is my attempt at forming an easy to get into book club type thing, but with games! Anybody and everybody is welcome to join in on the fun!
Rules are simple
- Each month a random game will be chosen, by myself, for the club to play. Games can vary from the beginning of gaming onward to current generation platforms. There's no limitations!
- You have from the 1st of every month to 11:59PM EST of the final day to complete the designated game. 100% completion isn't required. The point of the club is to provoke game discussion, as well as give GameTZ veterans and new users a place to mingle!]
- For every game completed, post a picture as proof of your completion Example
- You will be awarded with a badge each month you complete the game. All badges will be proudly displayed next to your name in the original post. As long as you "roll credits" the game is considered beaten!
- Every user to complete the game each month will be thrown into a drawing to win prizes! Users will be assigned a number and 3 numbers will be randomly generated in the beginning of the following month.
- Each month's prizes will vary. Prizes will be given out by either me or TradingFin. Sometimes physical, sometimes digital. If you would like to contribute, drop me a message.
- If you don't own the game, and you have access to it on another platform, you're welcome to play it that way. Just make sure that it's the same version, to qualify for the prize or badge.
- If you do not want to participate in the games, but would like to join in on the conversations, please do!

I don't think it's actually 30 hours long. I've been playing for... ten, twelve hours? Got one key to grab, then I'm off to the Vault I think. I haven't been this far before but I can't imagine half the game's still left.
Not gonna lie, I may unironically run through BL2 after this. I need to figure out the bit that I'm stuck on in Oasis for RTT GOTM and then I'm freed up.
100% Speedruns for even the enhanced GOTY version are around 3 hours, and that's with bad luck and having lots of (questionably) unnecessary deaths. There's some Grenade Bounce exploitation to get around some gates involved but if you aren't sitting behind cover for six minutes to earn every five minutes of progress and are just going for objectives the game speeds up a lot obviously. I'm not saying these guys speed ran it but you could probably knock this out in two days if you know what you're doing. One if you don't shower.
You can grind out levels with sweet spots and even having 1-2 levels on the area you're wanting to progress through makes a world of difference. Speedrunners would have to hit up all the missions they missed in the interim but at that point they're trivial.
So, I just beat Mad Mel by standing at the edge of the arena and sniping him over and over. Is that what you're supposed to do, or did I just cheese him?
There's a vehicle spawn right next to the arena, and his cronies and he are all driving, so I would _think_ that we're supposed to go all Twisted Metal on his ass. I tried that method, though, and just got my butt handed to me over and over.
Fifteen hours wasn't bad. It wasn't GREAT and that was a stinkbomb of an ending. But I do kinda wanna see how BL2 finished up. I didn't get much farther than the Phoenix boss. I didn't see the game getting better than that at the time, lol.
I wouldn't have bothered with a date stamp but I needed to get Papa Franku on paper. Further details on time played and achievements earned can be found here
I'm definitely interested to see where BL3 goes. Not sure it's a Day One for me, but it's on my watch list for sure.
I got about ten seconds after taking the picture before skipping the credits. Oh look, a crap ton of chests for a game I'm finished playing! But honestly most of the loot was inconsequential for the last couple hours, other than finally taking off the training wheels on my class mod (passive healing! REALLY SLOW passive healing, but passive healing!) and going from okay to mass murderer with my sniper (85% crit damage boost, I should have been running a class mod like that a lot earlier honestly)
Haha, I love decent internet connections. BL2's installed and ready to play with all DLC loaded. Literally took seven minutes
BL2 felt like an endless slog to me. I played it for hours and it didn't feel like it was moving forward. I think I missed out because multiplayer was the big thing. Barely touched it for big world bosses.
Kinda funny how much better BL2 looks in every way than even the touched-up Enhanced Edition of BL. I was gonna get huffy that they didn't do an enhanced version of this but frankly it doesn't need it, at least not on PC. Game still looks relatively sharp. Music's fantastic, too.
BL2 looks better, but is it better? Arguably, no. The guns are frequently worse, the checkpoints are inarguably worse (though being able to cheese the first game wasn't awesome), and I'm not really feeling the enemy archtypes. Mostly because the gunplay is so fudging sloppy by design. Yes, a pistol that fires missiles is interesting but when I want to go for an assault rifle that handles like your arms are made of rubber, or sniper rifles that force burst fire on zoom (???)...
No bueno. I had tons of choices in BL that let me shoot like I wasn't a fudging drunkard. So far in BL2, bad feels.
U guys are fast. It might take me all month to beat. First I got sidetracked and started playing the zombie dlc. And then I play this between a couple other games, like MK11. If I don't just stick to main quests, I might not finish in time. But I guess the ocd in me makes that hard because I always try to finish each quest that pops, eve if it's side missions. Also, if I go thru and and only do main quests, I will then be stuck with a lot of very low lvl easy quests. Err
GOTY was just the base game with all DLC. Enhanced is that but with less crap textures, and the game can scale up to 4K. Has been known to introduce some issues, but the worst I had was getting stuck on floor geometry and ...actually that was the worst of it. The game actually ran super nice. Much better than the base game would have.
It's a very political game, so i'm not really going to go in depth, but basically the gameplay seemed like it was simplified compared to 2, and the story slowly devolved into an incoherent mess after a certain point.

I loaded both versions and decided to go with the enhanced version because the other one looked like ass in comparison. While playing, I saw a lot of enemies getting stuck in walls. The best one was when I was battling Mad Mel. I thought I had destroyed all of those cars, but the map showed one left. I couldn't find it at all until I looked up and saw that I had blasted them into the ceiling!
The only problems that I had were with some of the cut scenes. If I was running and crossed a certain point that triggered a cut scene, the game would crash. Once I figured out where that spot was, I would look down and slowly inch my way into the scene. Probably because I have an old, weak-ass computer. Other than that, it was fine.
So yesterday I was looking through the challenges list. For sniper rifle kills, it showed me at 807. I have maybe actually done 50. Not sure where that huge number is coming from. Since yesterday when I looked, I have sniped one guy and one turret. Now the challenge shows 885 kills. I'll take the challenge XP, but the stat-tracking is wild
I played a few hours this weekend. So far my impressions are that every quest is a boilerplate go to quest marker, pick up a thing or shoot dat guy quest. Sniper rifles seem to suck because they're so slow, but maybe they get better. Apparently everything has a big ass scope anyway so there was no point in me choosing a sniper class.
I don't get the issue with sniper rifles. I mean, yeah, they're slow, but the AI is even slower, so getting that headshot or 20 in is trivial, and if it wasn't for the fact that the boss was immune to headshots i'd would've said it's the best gun.

I'm about to finish. This is my biggest complaint about the game. It's fun at first when you're just playing around with the "Serious Sam / Diablo lovechild" concept, and it's fun at the end when the missions get a whole lot more interesting and intense. The middle is a snoozefest.

This is my second biggest complaint. Not about sniper rifles in particular, but about weapon proficiency. You can line up your shots, be patient, and manage recoil all you like, but if you haven't grinded on that weapon, you're not going to kill anything. Even as Lilith, I love using sniper rifles now once she developed high enough proficiency. One-hit kills through shields are awesome.
I mean, half the appeal for the randomness of loot is that you could get a disgusting Legendary assault rifle (as I did) that'll carry you all the way to the ending (as mine did). Some stuff's OP, and most of it's junk. I disagree with the sniper argument though, especially with the Hunter class, its ONLY redeeming factor is the sniper boost class mods that I realized (way too late) just fudging murder everything non-boss in the game with one blow to the head. I was taking Badasses down to 15% health with one shot. Enemies don't start using decent evasive maneuvers until the very last stage; one of the things I noticed in BL2 immediately was that they do Crazy Ivans a lot more often, run for cover when you're down more often than not and are generally more difficult to get crits on, which inadvertently strengthens the crap out of assault rifles and shotguns in comparison. I haven't found decent weapons of the other stuff yet to judge their effectiveness; you get a blue or better Vladof assault weapon and you're gonna be doing some nasty crap for a long time.

I did. Used the silly grenade battery skill- was ok- pretty much played aggressively and got up in their faces with a shotgun and grenades. The turret is almost like having another player when it's up. Skills very underwhelming- but never in need of ammo or grenades.
Some thoughts. I played the last 2 nights and at times it's frustrating. I'm playing as Lilith and not finding her skill too useful so far. I loved Maya's skill in BL2, but Lilith's in BL1 is more like Zero's from BL2 only she really can't do any damage early on. I've spec'd her to heal when phasewalking as in boss fights that's vital to keeping me alive. I beat Sledge and left Fyrestone near the end of my session last night. Game was tough for a while as I'd do such low damage and run out of ammo in some fights - it was a PITA. I was hoping to skip most of the side stuff, but I faced 9-Toes and Sledge almost too early and struggled to beat them, so side missions especially higher XP ones are a necessity. I found a 2x Fire Sniper that was getting me 1 hit headshot kills or getting them low enough to burnout quickly, otherwise I have been using a high fire rate SMG or repeater pistol. I've found the shotguns and rifles aren't too useful, haven't got a launcher nor Eridian weapon yet.
I last played this co-op as Brick the brute and don't recall having to scavenge for ammo like I'm having to solo. The things that annoy me most are QoL things that BL2 and The Division series both did very well, like auto pickups, a stash, the junk/favorite markings, inventory management, etc. After playing north of 600 hours in Div1 last year and up to the launch of Div2 where I've put in over 120 hours in already those become glaring and annoying omissions in BL1. I want the badge, so I will struggle through this...

Yeah was co-op with soldier and he did use that skill eventually. But I don't recall running out of ammo on 2 of 3 guns in a medium sized battle like I did twice last night. Granted when playing co-op there isn't another player to do damage and I was weak for a while... I'll just have to adjust I suppose.
Stopped playing after i beat sledge. Found myself mostly going through the motions with the missions and the levels are starting to spike dramatically, and apparently lvl15 is the halfway point of the game??? Well either way, at least it's not made out of stale reddit memes.

I don't recall having to do that much at all, there's always a vending machine within reach where you can just max out whatever. Also the enemies often can't figure out where you are if you hide out in the huts they're in.

U must be playing an og version of BL1, I couldn't do that myself. The BL remaster adds most of the QoL stuff that bl2 has, like auto pickups and fav/junk marks, etc. I couldn't play this if I had to manually pickup every piece of ammo
@Slickriven I believe in you man! Glad to see you guys working for the badges. And at first I thought the badges weren't going to be enticing. (Mainly because I'm not great at Photoshop)

Would you guys be interested in playing 20 questions next month, for a potential early reveal? I can run every user into the random generator, and that will determine who guesses, and how many times they can guess. Might make it really easy to figure out, but I think it would be fun to mix it up every once and a while!
@Missle - True, there are a number of vending machines around, but I was largely ignoring them as I was used to having plenty of ammo. I've also been lower on funds than I expected thanks to dying a bit more times thanks to mistakes and not being leveled high enough/weak weapons. I have focused on buying the SDU's to give me more capacity, but they quickly drain my in-game wallet. I also don't recall being this low on funds when playing co-op, but when playing co-op I rarely died which can gobble up lots of $$ if dying frequently.
@SilverOwl - Yeah I'm playing the GwG given 360 digital version. I had purchased the 360 GOTY edition physical copy back in the day and played it a lot, beat twice including all DLC. The GwG title also included the DLC and yes the QoL things are annoying, but I'm not looking to spend $30 to buy a game I already own digitally and physically and had it not been picked by Frank I'm not sure I would have played it again. Had he picked BL2 or even the weaker BL-the Pre-Sequel I have the Handsome Jack collection on X1 already.
@Frank - Now that I'm out of Fyrestone it's been a little less annoying as I'm shifting gears to doing most side missions and I've hit level 22, I've found some better weapons, and I don't feel as weak overall.
I don't mean fast travel in the main story. There are plenty of those all over the place. I mean in the DLCs, you can only fast travel to the opening area and then have to manually work your way back through map after map to get wherever you were when you turned the game off last.
@Frank I beat Playthrough 1 before I even saw this thread. I suppose I could take a picture of the playthrough selection screen huh? (Showing Playthrough 2 as available means P1 had to be beaten.)
another good point. does "console" exclusive mean its not a handheld or are handhelds in play, but how many handhelds would there have been in the 90s.. GB and GBC, game gear... none of those systems make a lot of sense for a group like this. even gba came out in 01.

Bahamut Lagoon The Legend of Dragoon Terranigma Not part of a franchise.
Eye of the Beholder Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos Not part of a big franchise.
Breath of Fire III/IV Grandia Lufia II Lunar 1/2 Ogre Battle / Tactics Ogre Shining Force II Star Ocean 2 Valkyrie Profile Wizardry VII Not sure if it is a big enough franchise.
Chrono Trigger/Cross Not much of a franchise, but both games - especially the first - are well-known and celebrated.
Final Fantasy IV-VIII VII and VIII had PC releases semi-close to their original release. Frank is a cruel mistress if he makes the GOTM a 50-hour RPG - even an amazing one - so IV-VI seem like the more likely options.
Secret of Mana Checks almost all the boxes, but I'm not sure if you have a party in this one. I'm pretty sure I've seen caps of the main character running around with others. Also, isn't there a multiplayer mode? This one seems like a good fit, if the "of Mana" franchise is considered popular enough.
Diablo Not a console exclusive, and no party system.
Suikoden How well-known is this franchise? Seems like the only people who talk about it are referring to how expensive it is.
Super Mario RPG Technically, I think this is part of the Mario & Luigi franchise, but that's a bit of a stretch.
Xenogears I don't think this is part of a franchise, unless Xenosaga counts.
Earthbound Part of the Mother franchise, but most people talk about Earthbound as a standalone game. The other Mother games weren't big domestically.
Phantasy Star IV This seems like a good candidate.
It's hard to gauge what a "well-known franchise" is as I don't know what the world looks like outside my bubble. It gets even more complicated when some of individual games are megaton bombs - Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, etc. - but the franchise as a whole doesn't seem extremely popular.
Phantasy Star was the only game on the list that seemed like an obvious candidate. They're still making new games in the franchise, it's getting a bunch of re-releases, and it's hand-in-hand with classic Sega gaming.
ya i wouldnt call them well known though most here probably know them. star ocean and grandia did come to mind. i dont think it would be grandia, with a re release coming why not wait for that to make it gotm.

the old ones are on pc now as well along with other platforms, so we still need what console exclusive means.

like the other list, its certainly well known here and in rpg players circles, and checks all the clues if you consider it well known.

xenosaga is supposedly connected, i thought about this one, but wouldnt call it well known.
