What do you guys think about this? I'm considering replacing my GameCube Gameboy Player if this turns out to be alright.

After all said and done, this is software emulation, much like all of their other products. Nothing to be gained here. I would recommend keeping the Game Boy player.

Note: I've not had anything good to say about any of their products.

I have a Retron 5 that does GB/C/A and it is fine. Looks like This is basically a stripped down version that removes the NES/Famicom/Genesis/Mega Drive/SNES/SFC slots

One thing I like about it is built in save states and cheat code support.

I will say their Retron controller is among the worst I have ever used, though. Thankfully the system has ports for real controllers.

I was told by a user here who runs a game store that with these Retrons, if your pins aren't clean, taking a game in and out of these Retrons could ruin the game. I'd be inclined to believe him.

I'd get a Retron 5 over that.

Noted Retron hater here, I would recommend keeping what you have.

It seems plausible, the ports tend to have a bit of a death grip. But I clean everything as soon as I get it

I just checked that out and watched the video about it. They lost me when they talked about the need to install it. That is beyond me.

Yeah, they sell a kit. You need to use the guts from your own GBA. So stick with the GameCube player if you've got that. It's as good as most folks will ever need

Do you think an 8Bitdo Wireless USB Adapter would work on a RetroN 5?

They do have a fully assembled one for sale:

But no idea when that will come back in stock.

Any reason you want to replace the GBA player? @citizen_zane

None of these options is particularly attractive, price-wise or convenience-wise

Probably? We actually just use original SNES/Genesis controllers since we have a few of each. It's worth a shot.

Assuming he doesnt have Component Cables for his gamecube. If he does then GBA Player with GBI would be good.

OEM GC Component is like $250, not worth the price IMO.

Luckily GBI does 240p beautifully even on S-Video output, Scart would be better but the US Cubes don't support native RGB. I think there are modded cables out there, but should try GBI via Swiss with a S-video first!

This is what I have:

From what I can tell, it probably won't work. I would probably do like you guys and use the original controllers.

Yeah, I don't have those cables and don't think I ever will.

This is not the right adapter. There are 2.4g ones with SNES adapter, there are also Bluetooth adapters. I have no clue if they work on retron though.

Not sure, I haven't bought any 8bitdo stuff.

I did find the following article though:
https://www.hanselman.com/blog/awesome-legal-wirel...

As for the GC component cable, is there a big difference in quality for a 3rd party one compared to the Nintendo branded one?

Metaljesus posted a video review of the new Square thingy.

https://youtu.be/RFQxNIHHUCc

It's adorable, but it completely sucks for GBA games right now. Maybe they'll fix that in a firmware update, but for right now I would avoid this thing.

GB/GBC games are playable just fine, but the aspect ratio is off, and they don't have any options to disable or change pre-set color options for games that use those.

Sounds like all the downfalls of a Retron 5 are still here?

When you release something with a lack of options, you better make sure your crap is seamlessly plug and play.

After watching that video, there is no way I'm getting one of those. It looks like their RetroN 5 is a much better option for portable games, especially the GBA games.
