Dampe can be seen giving Link a full heart container at one point, so that's 20 new heart pieces at most. Also, looks like you get 5 rewards from the seashells now. (Maybe more of them to find as well.)

Link's Awakening has been haunting my backlog since the late 90s. I think the last time I attempted to play through it (shout out to the RTT) I only made it about half way.

I'm fully planning on beating it this time.

I only beat it once, the GBC version. It was much later, maybe 2002. I remember it being pretty great, but I also remember getting stuck a time or three.

Link's Awakening is a BIT on the short side, as far as Zelda games go. Although, it sounds like you've played it before, maybe even a long time ago, but you probably remembered quite a bit, which is speeding up your playthrough.

I'm curious how many seashells there are as well. I've already found a ton that weren't in the original.

Fun fact: In the original, while you did get the last reward for 20 seashells, there were actually 25 seashells in the game. Once you got the reward, any remaining seashells would turn into rupees.

@Scott, there are 50 seashells in this version. They actually removed (or rather replaced) one from the original version. The ghost that follows you now gives you a different reward when you take him to his grave. In the original, he would tell you about a pot in his house, which contained a seashell. That pot isn't in the Switch version.

After sorting by playtime on the home screen, It seems that I have played for over 10 hours. I got up to Eagle's Tower, but have decided to look for some more seashells for the sword upgrade before I do the final two dungeons. It just seems like it would be pretty pointless to get the upgraded sword at the very end of the game. Loving this version of the game, though.

Edit: Oh, and you need 40 seashells for the sword. I think all 50 gives you one of those chamber stones.

That's cool, can't wait to see what the new reward is. So far I've liked all of the changes/additions.

In the original, I usually got the 2nd sword before either dungeon 5 or dungeon 6, pretty sure 5 though. I would say right before 7 is the absolute latest you should get it.

You're right, I didn't think of that. I cheated and used a seashell map so I could get the Koholint Sword.

Oh, dang. I never got the second sword in the original and I didn't get it in the Switch version until right before I entered the Wind Fish's Egg. I quit looking for more seashells once I hit 40 because I doubt I'll ever make a dungeon/use the next reward. I finally got to see the "THE END" screen in probably my favorite LoZ game and I had a blast playing this version. Also, I finally got to finish the Color Dungeon and the choice of reward was a pleasant surprise.

Have any of you messed around with the dungeon maker, yet? I haven't been to Dampe since I first talked to him after the second dungeon.

I did the first four challenges. You get two seashells that way. You have to do all of his challenges (12, I think) for the final heart container.

I just got the Koholint Sword. (The name of the upgraded sword in this version.) I know there are some seashells from the fishing game, but I have been trouble reeling in that damn Cheep Cheep and a giant blue fish. (A Blooper also appears after you encounter one in a dungeon.) Thankfully, I went down to the beach and found one in a tree that I had missed. Overall, the new seashells are probably the best new addition to the game, along with the revamped Trendy Game. I was originally more excited about the new heart pieces, but almost all of these are clearly visible in the over world or won from mini-games. Some of the new seashells are much better hidden. Still glad they added the new heart pieces, though.

I stand corrected about the seashell in the ghost house. I checked my map and I did get one from there. I guess the pot just isn't there anymore after you collect it. I've beaten all the dungeons now and have maxed out my heart containers. Just need 4 seashells, two of which I know are from the fishing game. I'll just beat the game and go for the seashells later. You actually have to beat it before you can can collect all the figurines, anyway. Definitely like this version of LA, despite a few technical issues.

I beat the 8th dungeon last night. Had all of the seashells and heart pieces except for the ones you get from Dampe, so I decided to complete that before beating the game. As I expected, I really don't enjoy the dungeon maker very much. It's been a chore working my way through his challenges, but I just have 2 more. Oh yeah, and I'm saving the color dungeon for after the final boss, since I don't want to make the game even easier than it already is.

It's a pretty faithful remake. Still the same game, essentially, but with a complete graphical overhaul, and lots of tweaks to fix limitations the original had. For example, the Game Boy only had 2 buttons other than start/select, so you had to constantly go to your menu to swap items. In this one, several of the more commonly used items are fixed to certain buttons, then you have X and Y to use for the rest. They also added a fair amount of collectibles. Nothing crazy, but I appreciated it.

Well just so you know, A Link to the Past got an excellent sequel on the 3DS, A Link Between Worlds. It's cool because it basically uses the same overworld as A Link to the Past, but it's still a brand new game with new dungeons, items, NPCs, and a cool mechanic.

I think I might play Link To The Past after this. I've already beaten Link Between Worlds, which is great by the way. I believe it's the same internal team that made this Switch port of Awakening.

Yeah a lot of people thought that. Even some people who played it said it was too similar to ALttP, but I firmly disagree. Even though they used the same overworlds, there were still a lot of changes to them, plus a completely new story, all new dungeons, new NPCs, etc.

It's too bad you played ALBW first. I think it would have been a much better experience if you had played ALttP first, then ALBW.

I played through the entire game in a few sessions during two 12 hour flights over the past couple weeks.

I was shocked how terrible the frame rate drops not just outdoors but often in dungeons. I would love a chance to look under the hood and see gpu timers as to why that is.

The gameplay holds up amazingly, and i played the original a few times as a kid so this brought back a ton of nostalgia. I actually beat the last boss while the plane was landing, put my switch into sleep mode, and am waiting to finish the finale when i have time to see it on docked

I've read comments from folks that they didn't even noticed the frame rate drop. I'm like "how the F would you not notice it?". If it wasn't an issue, the game would be amazing. So far, it's only "very good" for me.

Finally finished this the other day. 100% except for the extra dungeon builder challenges (beyond the initial 12). I really didn't care for the dungeon builder at all, so I'm not going to suffer through more of that just for completion sake. Overall, I think this was a pretty great remake. When I first saw the graphics in the reveal trailer, I wasn't crazy about them, but with each video, I liked them more and more, and I think the final product looks great! I noticed the framerate issues a lot the first couple times I played, but after that I barely ever noticed it. Guess I got used to it. I really appreciated all of the changes they made to the game. The biggest one obviously being that they mapped more commonly used items to certain buttons to reduce item swapping. My only gripe with the original was the extreme amount of item swapping, so this was a very welcome change. They did a really good job of making some things easier that were maybe a bit too hard in the original, but they also made quite a few things harder, enemies and bosses in particular. I still wish this had been a sequel instead, but at least it was a really good remake!

When some kind of Link's Awakening game first started to be rumored, I was really hoping for a sequel. Now that we got the remake, I highly doubt we'll ever get a sequel. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't see it happening. They better not stop making 2D Zelda games though. As long as we get some kind of new 2D Zelda, I'll be happy.

Nintendo said they would like to release a Zelda game once a year. In order for them to do that I think they need a mixture of dipping into their past games for remakes/remasters, make new smaller 2D titles that would have normally been on their hand held console, and make new mainline full 3D games like BotW. There are a ton of Zelda games I would like to see full remakes/remasters of that I never got to play like Minish Cap and the Oracle games.

I don't remember seeing anything about that. Do you have a link? I would love for that to be true. Remake all the Zelda games that haven't been remade, give us some new 2D titles, plus the occasional, big 3D Zelda game. That would be perfect!

Honestly, out of all the Zelda games, it would probably benefit the least from a remake. It's darn near perfect, has great 16-bit graphics, holds up amazingly well all these years later, and doesn't really have any real issues/annoyances that could stand to be improved. At least, not any I can think of off the top of my head. They could add some stuff, like a bonus dungeon, I'd play it just for that.

Sounds more like rumor/speculation to me, but hopefully it turns out to be true.

yeah I only searched for a few minutes, there could be more official confirmation elsewhere but I just didn't look all that hard.

I wouldn't like a yearly release. Don't turn this series into CoD or AC, Nintendo! lol

They pretty much already dud with A Link Between Worlds. While I enjoyed it, something about it seemed off compared to ALttP, which it damn near perfect IMO.

I wouldn't mind an annual release as long as it consists of remasters and not just new entries because I agree, I would not like this to turn into CoD, but I don't think that Nintendo could make new Zelda games fast enough to do that. Seems like just about all of their mainline Zelda games have seen pretty big delays.

A Link Between Worlds was so not a remake though. It was a full new game. Sure, it re-used the overworld maps, but that's all, and even the maps weren't exactly the same.

Yeah, even if they do continue with yearly releases, it will definitely be a combination of ports, remakes, spin-offs, and actual brand new games. No way they're going to go the CoD route and put out basically the same thing with minor changes each year. That's just not Nintendo.

I could see the next remake being Oracle of Ages/Seasons. Actually, it could be the unreleased third Oracle game that was supposed to come out with those -- would be a cool way to draw in people who have played those games and want a different take.

Yeah Nintendo takes their times with mainline Zelda games. I think the average is about 3-4 years of when a new mainline Zelda gets released with there being 7 years between ALttP and OoT. Nintendo definitely takes their time with mainline Zelda.

Yeah, I think this is likely, since they used the same art style as Link's Awakening. I would love that, since they could really benefit from the same updates/improvements Link's Awakening got.

While I would love for this to happen some day, I doubt it will. My understanding is that 3 Oracle games was more of an early-on concept, but then they decided to just make 2 games. I don't think much, if any development ever actually took place for the third game.

True, but it didn't have the same "amazing" quality that ALttP did IMO. Despite that the fact I have beaten ALttP multiple times, every time I pick it up again, I'm like "this is game is still amazing."

I thought ALBW was amazing, but I've only played it once. I wasn't arguing how good it was though, just that it's not "pretty much a remake" of ALttP.

Agreed. I did enjoy it, but like you, I have only played it once. Not sure if I would play it again. Seems like it would be an easy cash grab for Nintendo to "port" certain 3DS games to the Switch eShop but removing touchscreen gameplay features.

I played through ALBW back when it released and beat it in 12 hours. I played again on Hero mode two years ago and put over 20 hours into it that time. I noticed the same thing with Link's Awakening. When I played the DX version on 3DS a few years back, it only took around 7 hours. Even though the Switch version is mostly the same game, this last play through took over 20 hours. I still don't know what I was doing for most of that time. Maybe 3 of those hours were just getting through the last two dungeons. Speaking of Hero mode, I want to play through LA on that mode as well. It will be awhile though, since I'm playing DQ 11 and Witcher 3 back-to-back.

I've been itching to replay it for a while and was slowly working toward it (been playing through all of the 2D Zelda games in order off and on for the last year or so). I'll be mad if they port/remake it right after I finally replay it!

I really want to do this too, but I've got too many other games on my to-play list.
