Hope Captain Toad retails for $40, like the original did. I'd definitely pick it up for Switch, especially with the new Odyssey levels.

Is Smash Bros going to be Smash Bros U 1.5 or an all new one? I'm surprised an all new one would come so soon.

I'm definitely most excited for Super Smash Bros on Switch. I'm hoping for multiple new characters, compilation of stages from Wii U/3DS plus new ones, and a story mode similar to subspace. Realistically we might just get Smash Run and Smash Tour.

Its been 4 years this September, so I wouldn't be too surprised if its a new one entirely. It would be the soonest between SSB releases though by about 2 years.

They didn't specify. I could see it go either way, and I'm guessing we don't found anything more out until E3. Makes more sense to call it new, since they will likely swap out 3rd party characters.

Nothing blew me away, but the collective whole was pretty interesting. 2018 looks pretty good and we haven't even hit e3 yet. Hopefully more 3rd parties jump on board. And we know Metroid Prime and a proper Pokemon are coming too (looking more like 2019 if Smash makes it in 2018).

I think Pokémon is already confirmed for this year because during its reveal last e3 the guy in the video said that its going to "release in about a year from now", so unless it slips from that initial projection then I think its probably still a 2018 release. If MP, Pokémon, and Smash all launch this year then the Switch will have a record breaking year.

Melee came out just two years after the first one. If it's a new game, they're probably just saving game play videos for E3.

For those who haven't played Little Nightmares yet, be sure to grab it. It's an excellent game.

I would be surprised if it's a new Smash. They have Smash 4 which most of the public didn't play on Wii U (people played on the 3DS, but it was awkward). It would be easy for them to port that and enhance it, especially if it's coming out this year.

Include @Frank's suggestions, with some new characters and bringing back old ones (Ice Climbers!), and it's an easy cash-in for Nintendo.

Yeah, I mean, it sold a little over 5 million which wasn't too bad but lower than Brawl and Melee. If they just used the same engine as Smash U and added more stages, characters, and content then thats really all they need.

Would way much cooler to have a new Luigi's Mansion, a new Captain Toad, a new Mario & Luigi, a new Okami, a new Souls, a new Undertale, a new Crash, a new Little Nightmares, a new South Park, or a new Hyrule Warriors.

Switch continues to be a dumping group for the games of yesteryear. The last two Nintendo Directs were all focused on ports. The next Nintendo Direct is going to New Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker Switch, and Yoshi's Wooly World Switch. I don't just want yesterday's news. Xbox One can be the multiplatform box with no exclusives. I only care about Switch for those sweet new Nintendo games I haven't seen before.

Some of those games are only a few months old. Then we got Octopath news, No More Heros, Smash, and new content for their 1st party games. This wasn't an e3 conference, just a simple Direct and showcasing that the Switch is not only getting the best 1st games this gen, but also the same 3rd party games as the other consoles plus some of the best games from the Wii U that not many gamers got to play because they didn't own the console. I felt it was a solid Direct.

The only way a Switch port would be something I would be interested is if is they made it to where you could use your existing character from another version of D3 and port it over. No freaking way I would restart my level paragon 200 account from scratch.

Highly doubt you'd be able to transfer over from another system.

I've played about 20 minutes of it on Xbox one and I liked it, just ended up moving on to something else.

I'm impressed with today's direct, but I'm surprised we didn't see any Fire Emblem or Animal Crossing. That makes me think one of them might get a surprise summer release.
I'm also surprised to see Lugi's Mansion 3DS instead of Switch. Maybe it will lead into part 3 being released this Winter or next year.

I'm curious if we'll see another direct between now and E3. Nothing has been announced for August-rest of the year. I can't imagine them going 4 months without more news.....
Good lineup for the middle of the year. If they get Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon out before the end of the year Nintendo is going to have a gigantic year.
I anticipate everything after August to be online heavy. This is when I anticipate GTA, Call of Duty, Fortnite, and Overwatch. I presume we'll get more news about those once the online service is released.

I really can't believe how much stuff Nintendo is releasing this year. We also have to anticipate most of the games next year will be fresh "not ports." They've had 3-5 years to build these games. We're going to see some insanely good crap.
This is some intense momentum.

No Luigi's Mansion on Switch (only 3DS) makes me think it's a launch virtual console gamecube game,
for later this year....

Also, with Crash coming to the Switch, there's a possibility then that Spyro comes along sometime in the future too.

i dont think we are getting GTA on switch unless its 5, and i dont see fortnite happening, but anything could happen, i dont think we see fortnite til the full release is done on the other systems. its the biggest thing going though so im sure nintendo would love to have it, that will be a pro controller necessity.

kind surprised about luigi's mansion not being a switch title seems like that would have been a big hit.

octopath!!!! this was the game that made me buy the switch, so here's hoping its as good as i hope it is

I can see the frustration with all the ports. If you've supported Nintendo or played them on another system the switch may not interest you. Personally I haven't tried any of these games. But I feel like octopath looks interesting and tennis does as well. The rest were kind of eh. Not including smash because they didn't give us any real info. I'm not getting hyped just from seeing the name of the game

The leaked rumor of Spyro said that will infact be timed, so Switch owners will also more than likely get a change to play it.

I think its kind of funny just looking back on this whole mascot wars things. First Sonic was advertised as being "cooler" and more mature than Mario, then Crash had his turn trying to be the same thing a few years later, now look at them both. Sonic and Crash games are now on Nintendo's platform while approximately zero Mario games were ever ported to the console that those other mascots were advertising for.
Tim81DE
Gold Good Trader
* 9-Mar-2018(#44)
I think at the time each held their own fairly well. It's a shame no one besides Nintendo really has a mascot anymore. Sony tends to shed characters after a console or two, or just poorly managed them. Microsoft has Masterchief, but he is nowhere near the mascot he once was. He's almost transparent at this point.

The ports are a great idea. Many people never owned a Wii U and many other people have only owned a Wii and/or a 3DS before this, so the majority of Switch owners likely haven't played most of these games. Even for the people who have owned a Wii U, how many owned one for enough time to have played all of these releases? I doubt very many. We're kind of outliers on this and other gaming sites. More people likely have a Switch right now than entire Wii Us sold, so it makes complete sense. I am also completely for the ports. They don't bother me at all. There are still new first party and third party (including exclusives) releases coming out, so I don't mind. Plus, the eShop has a ton of high quality stuff (finally has some horror games too).

Also, I don't even see a gen 8 game that comes to the Switch as a port. If it's current gen and wasn't previously on another Nintendo system, I see it as a new game. Like South Park, for instance. I barely touched on that and enjoyed it well enough, but I definitely will be buying it for Switch. The on-the-go factor enhances the play value of every game, IMO. The only thing that sucks is if (and I'm assuming it won't?) it doesn't come with The Stick of Truth like the other platforms' copies did.

The only thing that really dissapointd me is the continued non-mention of a real VC-like offering (hopefully by E3, at least) and the lack of new AAA 3rd party games. Every time one is announced, I'm excited, but then other games are announced for other systems with no mention of a Switch version. Games like GTA, Fallout, Far Cry, AC, BF, and COD have no business not being on Switch. They all should be. I'm also disappointed to see no release date for Wolfenstein.

Crash always seemed to try WAAAAY too hard. Those commercials with him outside of Nintendo HQ were cringe worthy. Sonic has stayed pretty relevant and is still a very recognizable character, its just that Sega has had a difficult time making new Sonic games since the DC.

Posted this in the Switch thread but I guess I'll post here too. My thoughts on the Direct...

Kirby Star Allies - I've been moderately excited for this game, mostly because my whole family can play it together. Didn't really see anything here that makes me more excited, but it was nice to see more of the game.

Octopath Traveler - Can't wait for this one, it's looking great.

Dark Souls: Remastered - Nothing particularly exciting here, but I'm still looking forward to trying this out.

Mario Tennis Aces - Same as Kirby, I'm moderately excited for this since my whole family can play it together. The new mechanics they've added look pretty fun, and the graphics look gorgeous.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - I loved this game on Wii U and have hoped they would make a new one. Was very excited when they started to show it in the Direct, just to become very disappointed when I realized it was a port with a few levels added in. I get the ports to a degree, but this feels like a game they could have easily made all brand new levels for. I want to know just how many levels they're adding. If it's 10 or less I probably won't get it, out of principle.

Undertale - Don't really know anything about this game except that it seems pretty popular, so I'm happy to see it coming to the Switch.

Crash Bandicoot - I've actually never played a Crash game but it looks like a fun platformer based on the clips they showed. May have to try it out.

Super Smash Bros. - I love the way they did the reveal. Even though I'm not a huge Smash fan, it had me pumped! Maybe this will be the one that finally draws me in enough to play it a lot and get good at it.

Overall, I think it was a very solid Direct for Nintendo. Unfortunately, there's still not much I'm really looking forward to this year. I'm pretty excited for Octopath (but not 1st-party AAA Nintendo game excited), and then I'm kind of looking forward to Kirby and Mario Tennis, that's about it. There's still E3, but I think it's safe to say we've seen pretty much everything coming out in 2018 at this point, and any big things they reveal at E3 will be 2019. Maybe a holiday release or two, but that's still far away. Guess I'll continue catching up on older games I've been wanting to play.

I think you're way off when you say that we've seen pretty much everything that's coming out in 2018, Scott. Nintendo is just playing it close to the chest this time around. We still haven't seen anything from August-December, and Nintendo is even announcing things close to release date in some cases. I think there's a whole lot more. I would bet that we'll see either Pokemon or Metroid (I don't think we'll get both though), and I think there will be other stuff as well. These smaller directs were just appetizers.

I hope so. But even if they announce a couple things for close to the end of the year, that will have been a really long stretch of nothing I'm super excited for on the Switch. Last exciting game for me was Odyssey, which came out in October and I finished up some time in January.

I loved it. It's not particularly challenging, but it's not all easy either. The replay value is pretty good. Beyond just beating each level, there are collectibles you can go back for, and challenge times.

i think we will see more wii u stuff for sure. so many people didnt have one that probably have switches. i only got wii u at the end of its life, and would likely check out some of the things on switch instead if there was an upgraded switch version, the switch pro controller is just a home run its so comfortable and would choose it over the wii u controller.

everyone thinks im such a switch hater for always pointing it out, i think its great but i see it for what it is from a technology standpoint, can it even technologically handle some of these games? they are huge and technically demanding, and the switch is the least powerful, whatever GTA6 ends up being, it likely wont be able to do it, we might see gta5, but they are busy finishing RDR2 and then will likely move onto GTA6. ive heard black ops 4 maybe coming, but it will probably not be the same, and all switch games need to be playable in handheld mode and id think with the joycons call of duty would be kind of hard. i dont think we are going to see many of these kinds of games, because the devs know these games are expected to push the technical envelope, and they cant do that on switch in many cases. i think their lack of committment to an online infrastructure on par with sony and ms also keeps some of these kinds of games back perhaps.

I don't really get the mindset of "WFT? They already released that on the Wii U. Why is Nintendo releasing games everyone has already played?". Pretty much nothing but Mario Kart 8 sold very well on the Wii U, that's why they're porting the games not many played when they were on the Wii U and that's because the console was a disaster sales wise and Nintendo recognizes that not many people have actually played these games before.

I looked up Phantasy Star Online 2 Switch and it's the game that came to PC in 2012 and Vita in 2013 and PS4 in 2016. (I never realized such a game existed) It will have equipment and costumes from Breath of the Wild. But as mentioned before it's not coming to North America. :(

I get your perspective, but I think the opposing one is fair. For us hardcore NIntendo fans that had a Wii U and played most of these games, it sucks to see so many ports instead of brand new games. I mean, from a business standpoint, what Nintendo is doing makes sense. But it's kind of a slap in the face to those of us who supported them in one of their worst times. We should at least get discounts on these ports or something, but I know that's not easy to coordinate.

I get that too, but that's also going to be the minority seeing as how the Switch is appealing to a whole new generation, and crowd, of gamers who never owned the Wii U. By the end of this year, the Switch will be in over twice as many hands as the Wii U ever was. These games were fantastic and should be played by more people, so its great that its being offered to this new crowd.

Why would Call of Duty be hard to play with Joy-Cons? DOOM and Splatoon 2 seem alright. Just make sure to include gyro aiming, otherwise I personally would see no reason to play it on Switch.

And I agree, I don't expect GTA 6 or RDR 2 on Switch, not only because of the Switch's weak hardware, but it's also held back by the storage limitations of the cartridges. 64GB cartridges are still at least a year away, but even GTA 5 is bigger than that without all the free DLC they've added to it over the years. Probably the only way they could pull it off is if it was just a port of the last-gen version and they did it like DOOM where the story mode was on cartridge but you had to download the multiplayer stuff to a SD card.

Right, I get that perspective, it just sucks for the Wii U owners, that's why they respond the way they do. I'm somewhere in the middle. I didn't mind the ports early on because I had other games keeping me busy, but now there's not really anything for me on the Switch, and it looks like it could be that way for a while, it's annoying to see more ports coming. The need to announce a couple new, big games for the end of the year at E3, that will help.

I don't mind the ports because I think its great that more people have the potential to play games like Captain Toad and if the response from Switch owners is positive then we'll likely get a sequel in the future.

I'm with @DefaultGen here...still not quite enough to get me to drop $300 on a Switch. I get that they are trying to get EVERYONE to but it (smart move)...but for somelike like me that has tons of GC, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U titles - these ports are not going to cut it.

Glad to see more support for 3DS though yes That system is going to go down as an all time great, with crazy good software and longevity.

if it werent for the rpgs there wouldnt be enough for me either, but with octopath, fire emblem, xenoblade and smt5, and the bayonetta's i jumped in, and i can play mario and zelda as a bonus, as im in the minority of being a big fan of some 3d marios and zelda, but since they are there, and mario kart with the kids, so i figured why not. im not holding out much hope for my virtual console/eshop stuff to carry but that would be a big step for nintendo to do for us.

Bold position to take. Wanting brand new Nintendo games well get you negged faster than giving an 8/10 instead of a 10/10 to a beloved game. All the dang Nintendo-haters on GTZ don't want to see Nintendo make new games though frown

Nothing wrong with feeling this way. I'm sure once more new games like Pokemon, Metroid, Fire Emblem and others are dated, you and others might feel differently. There are plenty of great games on plenty of great systems to enjoy in the meantime.

Nah, saying you've already played all of these games (many of which are brand new) will get you negged.

Agreed. Shoot, I want NSMBU and 3D World too. I hope those are announced next. Honestly, Mario is a system seller, so I could see those coming around the holidays.

Another thing that is REALLY exciting me is the lack of GC/Wii remakes/re-releases. That gives me hope that they'll have those available digitally. Otherwise, why not port over DKCR, Twilight Princess (even though it was already done on the Wii U), Wind Waker, etc. With the popularity of those games and the growing install base of the Switch, clearly Nintendo knows what effect they would have, and clearly they have no problem porting stuff over. I think they'll just be more expensive than we've seen VC-type stuff in the past (or be part of some overpriced subscription service), but honestly, if they're included, they're included. I'll pay.

Nothing from the above list for me, on release. I would've considered Luigi's Mansion, if it was for Switch. My 3DS just sits here and collects dust. I should probably get rid of it.

Nintendo doesn't usually remodel consoles, but they obviously remodel portables all the time. Wonder what they'll do with the Switch, since it's both...

True.

Nintendo does update consoles though... However, not usually for the better! The NES top loader (didn't this only do RF?) , SNES model 2 (didn't play certain games) Gamecubes without the digital video port, Wii Mini which was junk (and also the second round of Wii without the B/C)...

I'd hate to wait on it only for them to release a new switch that is worse!
