There seems to be a weird glitch in Pac-Man 99. It may be a gameplay "feature" but I only started noticing it yesterday. It happens every time during a power pellet, if I am hitting a train of ghosts and swallow another power pellet during the chain. Not only does the power pellet not activate, but I lose a speed level. It REALLY hurts late in the game. The lost power pellet sucks, but the lost speed level almost guarantees an early loss.

I do like swapping out the themes while I play. My favorites are the Dragon Buster, Tower of Druaga and Rally X themes.

So I finished Inside, and the first thing that comes to mind is what the hell? I haven't been this confused about an ending since 2001 A Space Odyssey. Had a lot of fun with the game (and it's puzzles), but the ending sequence went off the rails. Even after googling theories I'm not entirely convinced. Not satisfying at this point. I might have to play it again to see if I pick anything else up. Such a wierd experience, definitely one of the most disturbing games I've played. Still worth $5 for me though.

I forgot the original Shantae had a behind-the-shoulder view in towns. Feels kind of weird, since all the other games were all side-scrolling. Looking forward to finally beating this though. It's the only Shantae game I never actually finished.

Ys IX releases on July 6 on Switch, for anyone waiting for that version. Between that and Ace Attorney, July will be a great month.

Amazon used to have a 20% discount for pre-orders on new video games for Prime members. I wonder if that move was implemented at swaying non-GCU members to stick with Amazon for that 20% off.

Didn't last as long as GCU did, but it was something.

The whole promotion was just another attempt by Amazon to poach a sale/promotion. That's largely what Amazon does.

Anyone who likes Contra should check out Savage Halloween in the eShop. It's on sale for just $2.49 and it's definitely worth it. There are 7 stages but they are quite long. Besides the run-and-gun game play, there are also shmup sections, an area inspired by the hover bike part in Battletoads (though not nearly as hard) and a water section that seems inspired by the TMNT water level. The game is really fun, and there's even 2-player co-op if you have someone to play it with.

Shoot-em-ups like Space Invaders, Gradius, etc. @KCPenguins, those sections aren't bad. The hover bike inspired level is over in a flash, and I really just made the TMNT connection on the water level myself. After looking at a video of that TMNT level, it's actually nothing like it at all.

But yeah, it's basically Contra with a Halloween skin. There's another game called Haunted: Halloween 86 that's on sale. I'll check that one out, too. I also want to play Halloween Forever, but that one is full price right now.

It's true - we have that whole thread dedicated to gaming cliches we hate, and this game breaks free from so many of them.

Friendly characters you can interact with? No. The friendly characters just dance, and they vanish as you approach. No explanation, just fade away. You have no friends, they're all constructs of your mind.

Multiple buttons? Yeah, your controller has em, but in this game they all do the same thing. Freedom and choice are an illusion.

Exciting power ups? Fudge that noise, you're getting mediocre abilities at best. And often you won't even be able to jump because of them. Those who seek power will be punished.

It's a perfect psychological thriller that rivals the best any Silent Hill game ever had to offer.

Well I gave it my best shot but I just can't get into Cuphead. Its unforgivingly brutal and even when you get the hang of a level, and beat it, the fun just isn't there. Having to get the rhythm down 100% to live? meh. Sad to say, not the title for me.

Cuphead's satisfaction comes from beating a hard game. There is no fun in it other than the satisfaction of beating a hard game. I've read some stories of kids in the 8-12 age group buying it cause they like the art style - only they end up not liking it for the difficulty.

How far did you get? Did you even get out of World 1?
theJaw

Eh, I'll argue that there is absolutely fun in Cuphead outside of just the satisfaction of winning. Obviously that's part of it, as is the case with any game (difficult or not), but I definitely have fun playing even when I lose. Sometimes a person just likes a game or dislikes a game whether it's their type of game or not, no prerequisites or special reasoning for it.

Been on the fence about snaggin Outer Worlds on Switch for months now. I know it's graphically not as good as other versions, but considering I've never played it and have no basis for comparison, I don't think I'd care about that.

Cuphead is rough no doubt there. I'm on World 2 still. Played it a few weeks ago and got passed the carnival clown head boss after like 30 attempts then stopped playing. I usually play it once a month to clear 1 stage. That's all I got left in me. Any more than that at one time and I'll lose my mind and temper and I don't want to break my nice things.

Yeah I think I'm gonna pass on Outer Worlds until I can snag it for less moolah. New Game+ on Ghost of Tsushima for me instead.

@TalonJedi87 It's definitely a game where extended breaks are warranted for sure. I'm still in my initial play through and have taken 2 breaks from it already. I find each time I go back, I enjoy and appreciate it more which allows me to trudge on through a few levels. But it definitely takes its toll after a while.

My issue with cuphead is that it's mostly boss battles and not enough actual levels
theJaw
GameTZ Subscriber Triple Gold Good Trader
25-Apr(#45)
That turned me off at first too but when I realized how much the boss battles actually change up, I got over it to an extent. Each level, boss or not, features a ton of different play types with various different techniques required so it doesn't feel like it's just a normal boss fight the way they're presented in other games.

That said I agree that they should have done a few more traditional side scrolling levels. The ones we got were great - here's hoping there's more in the sequel (if they ever make one).

Yeah thats the same feeling I get it out of it.. And no, didn't get out of world 1. I don't mind rhythm games where you have to get the muscle memory in and strategize. I think the difference is that Cuphead doesn't reward you along the way, only when you beat the level... for example, I really like Streets of Rage 4 and Lumines. I would say that both can be challenging, especially at harder difficulties. With them though, they allow you to beat levels/improve your high score while simultaneously getting better at it. Cuphead levels seem like a one and done. All that said, I also really dug Thumper which is kinda cuphead-esque in difficultly.

That would be too much. As it is the game isn't super easy. I keep on getting out by a boss that's pretty early on in the game. Keep getting out. Just something about this particular boss has me stuck, (so far). If there'd be a stage before it too, ouch.

Finally got all 100 cat shines in Bowser's Fury. The Fury that was Bowser began to wear on me in the last 10 shines or so. Bowser appears way too frequent, and sometimes he hangs out for way too long. I left some annoying ones to collect involving long platforming sections, some carrying stuff, and damn those lost kitties. lol

Luckily I never noticed the lucky islands until then, so those were pretty easy except when bowser only felt like being furious for 30 seconds or so. I was surprised I actually struggled on the final fight. I had no issues throughout the game taking down Bowser, but the 100% fight I actually had to use power ups and still got a few deaths.

If they do a full up Mario game like this, they need to work on the camera more, and add more land area. I got tired of Plessie, but overall I really enjoyed it. Probably more than Odyssey, less than 2d World/Galaxies for 3d Mario.

Yeah, if the bosses were at the end of run and gun stages, there definitely would have needed to be checkpoints. I was thrown off at first just because the game wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be, but after playing it I'm glad it was mostly just bosses. They're more like mini-bosses. None of them are as hard as any of the bosses from World 2 onward, and their patterns are pretty easy to learn. It's more of an endurance test than anything.

I swear this happened to me almost every single time. Only when going after the lucky islands would he disappear so quickly. Any other time that I WANTED him to leave, he'd hang out for 3-5 minutes easily!

Yeah, I was glad they upped the challenge a bit for the 100% fight, I was worried it was just going to be the same fight all over again.

I found him to be the easiest of the 3 options in that group. I got good at timing the dice, so I would land on a specific boss each time, then the free space. First round was the chips, then the rabbit in the hat, then the monkey.

I loved it, but it's very similar to Mario Golf GBC so if you didn't like that it would be hard to recommend. Same 3 button swing mechanic found in most arcade golf games of past. The story and humor are better, and it makes great use of HD rumble, but at its heart its a Mario Golf clone with better writing.

I've actually never played a Mario Golf game. All I've played are the golf mini games on Wii Sports and Wii Sports Club. I was never really interested in Mario Golf games, but recently I started hoping they'd bring some to Switch for me to try. So, I'm looking forward to the new Mario Golf game later this year.

Golf Story was really good. I'm not a sports guy at all (especially golf, yuck!) but I enjoyed it, especially for the writing. There were a couple parts that I was stuck on for a few days though and almost did quit, but I'm glad I wound up finishing it.

Wow, I'm impressed. When this game was first announced at E3 they didn't even mention anything about the online play, so I knew it was going to be low effort (and it was, only 10 mini-games were playable online), but this is a game changer (literally) and I might buy it now. I'm surprised they did this instead of just releasing a new game because at one point they were farting out a new Mario Party every year.

Honestly, I found Golf Story to be a bit boring. I quit after a few hours.

I loved Golf Story. If you loved Mario Golf GBC or Mario Golf: Advance Tour GBA, this game is right up your alley. I will say that the golf mechanics are definitely not as polished as those Mario Golf games, and I did encounter a bug that mad me lose a little bit of progress (I think it's since been patched).

One of the things that has stood out to me is people talking about the writing in Golf Story. Is it on the same level as the writing in The Messenger? I loved the dialogue in that game, especially with the shopkeeper.

Yeah Golf Story was great, but I rage quit on the final tournament after losing like 20+ times.

I was looking to pick up Mario Party at $20, with more online being added I will likely up my price a little to around $30. If someone tries it out Is like to hear impressions.

On golf games, I go back to Mario Golf 64. I hated golf. I hated playing it, watching it, playing all previous golf games I had played to that point. When Mario Golf 64 came out I was looking for something to play. I think it was a "drought", but I could be wrong. I made a deal with a coworker that he'd buy it from me if I didn't like it. After a few days, I was hooked. After Toadstool Tour it became one of my favorite series.

As for Golf Story, the story is very good, nothing earth shattering. It's funny. It has a subtle sad tone. It's silly most the times. But I believe the majority of love for this game comes from love for Mario Golf GBC and to a slightly lesser extent GBA, and also for being one of the first great indies exclusive to the Switch at the time. If you haven't played a Mario Golf game, I'd recommend it for the price of you're ok with wasting that if you don't like it. The only purchase I regret on Switch is Stardew Valley, and I paid less than $15 for that. Me enjoying the Mario Golf format, I go back and play the stroke play regularly. I don't think Super Rush will be a great indicator of Golf Story as the control scheme looks completely different. Last comment, I still don't like playing golf, but I've come around to watching it. I must be old.

Anyone playing The Messenger? It's been on sale in the eShop all week I think. It's a really fun Ninja Gaiden-style game. Simple on plot and character but can get pretty challenging and has the usual charm of a pixel art 16 bit game.

Played it, beat it. It's amazing other than one bullcrap boss in the DLC. I even backed their second game on Kickstarter cause I liked The Messenger so much.

Most of us already beat The Messenger, I think. It's a great game.
