Nah, there are a lot of people that feel this way. The game takes a little while to get its hooks in you. I started and stopped 3 times before it really clicked, but once it did, I was obsessed for like 3 straight weeks!

I'm still rocking that Nier Replicant, such an awesome game, definitely living up to my hype.

But I'm really interested in returnal and what you guys think that may be next on the list

If only you could return opened games. I think some stores did take open returns on Cyberpunk though

Meh. I'll buy Returnal on a sale. Getting a bit tired of all these rogue-like games. I much rather go back to the good ol' days when everyone and their mother was making Souls-like games.

Housemarque never disappoints. No idea when I'll get around to actually playing it, but I ordered a copy this morning to support them.

Returnal looks great but not having a game save is mind-boggling. The only way to "save" is to put the PS5 in rest mode and not play anything else. I realize you lose all your gear every time you die so it doesn't truly matter, but some stuff does carry over. If the game crashes you have to start over, if you want to move to another room to play, you have to start over. That's bonkers.

Having not played it you think it'd be possible to save and quit like Dark Souls and just be where you were. Not sure if it's possible to do what Hades did and save at the beginning of a level/area. It also sounds like you open doors and get permanent upgrades that make runs faster, so you might start slowly progressing and then getting way faster.

They should definitely implement a save state. Everspace is similar and does save automatically for when you really need to stop playing. Most of the time it is not needed but if you need to leave for some reason, then its cool to know you can continue where you left off.

Wow, so you have to suspend the game or have PS5 go into rest mode to save? That is pure ridiculousness. Even Hades let you quit and resume where you left off in the last chamber you reached.

Ya I was worried that I was hyped and it was going to disappoint, but that book is an awesome character and overall the gameplay and battle system is legit, it runs amazing and I am digging the story.

Makes me wish so much they'd do an Automata sequel at some point.

Yeah. It's not quite as bad as it sounds at first, because, once you beat a boss, you can run straight through that biome and don't have to beat the boss again, and you keep all of the items needed for progression. So, by the end, you can basically run through and mostly skip everything except the final boss each run (unless you're going for trophies that require doing more in the biomes whose bosses you've beaten). You also unlock a checkpoint permanently after each act, so, if you die in biomes 4, 5, or 6, you go back to 4 (not to 1). The Powerpyx trophy guide talks about this, but it still gives Returnal a 7 to 10/10 difficulty (skill/experience with roguelikes dependent). I suspect it will be pretty tough, but I'm excited.

Yeah I knew there had to be more to it than just "Quit the game, you restart the game" especially when said game is supposed to be pretty long and requires multiple runs to see everything. And it has 4 or 5 endings

Yes, as anyone who has tried to get pokemon cards in the last few months can tell you. Stores are emptied as soon as they restock.

Nah, it's a PS5 exclusive. Not sure how fast a sale happens though but based on what I've played you could see used copies for sale quick due to the difficulty/learning curve aspect.

I feel with so much push back on the no saving fiasco, Housemarque will release a patch in a couple of weeks to allow you to at least save and quit. From what I've read online so far, it seems to be a general agreement on average that a no saving option is kind of awful.

Yup. Tons of criticism on the no save thing. Most rogue likes/lites have some sort of save. Save scumming isn't gonna help you in this game if you suck at it though.

I don't think the save thing is a big deal like people think it is who haven't played it yet. Not a single reviewer had an issue with it as far as I know. It seems like its perfectly fine the way it is. Some reviewers even beat the game in 18-20 hours. So I think that is fine. The issue here is how short it actually is for the price. And the fact they are using random level generation as "content" for replay value. Most people wont be down with that.

From the reviews, it looks like it doesn't save mid run, but it does save between runs. That seems pretty standard for a roguelike, except the runs are closer to 2-3 hours each if you are getting near the end.

I saw packs of pokemon cards at Walgreens yesterday.

The packaging was very weird though. Clear Blister packs which is why they caught my attention. I havent bought cards in more than a decade so I have no idea if thats a thing now.

I'm liking Returnal. It might be the first rogue lite/like game I beat. Gave up on Hades, didn't like it in the end. Returnal is hard. The only complaint I really have is there's an active reload-like feature and it's hard to keep track of it with everything going on on-screen.

I don't even bother, unless you have some sort of malfunction that increases the time to recharge, it isn't worth trying to pay attention to unless its a relatively small group of enemies. I didn't know if I would like this game, but so far I'm loving it. Just got the ability to take down barricades and harvest nodes.

Tip for Returnal: you can toggle it so you're always running or toggle it. Useful. Also in the first Biome if you're low on health you can go back to the ship and rest twice in the bed.

The shooting is very satisfying to me, the guns feel different with the adaptive triggers and unique rumble. My favorite so far has been the shotgun style weapon with a burst tracking secondary fire - gotta be closer to wreck stuff but she is fairly quick and agile, so getting around isn't too much of an issue. Even the sound is great as I've been using the pulse headset.

I watched easy allies review (skimmed it) of Returnal and it sound too much like just another Demon's Souls. With "killing the thing that killed the dead body" and such. And I haven't even finished Demon's Souls, which I'll undoubtedly like better. So no thanks. Ratchet is out in a month anyway.

Some roguelikes have the DSouls thing where you get some of the stuff you lost if you reach your dead body. I think it works well for the genre.

I will only play Roguelike games where dying doesnt really mean start from 0. If you get to keep stuff to buy skills/ improve you character before the next run AND the gameplay is fun, I will probably enjoy it.

There is a sort of save feature in Returnal. When you beat a boss, you get a key that lets you skip the first Biome boss and go straight to two. From what I've read you can get Ether (permanent resource you keep on death) if you beat the boss again but it's not necessary to beat it again. Going though the Biome again is pretty quick and worth it to increase health though. So it's not like other Rouge likes where you have to beat the bosses again. I've never beat a Rouge like before and this will probably be the first. Also, Demons Souls is way easier due to builds. Doing mage is easy mode.

Beat the second boss in Returnal. I'm loving this game so far. Managed to get double health bar in one run. Got the grappling hook after boss 2. Also, I swapped dash to L1 and it makes it better. I might try to swap melee to R3 but so far square seems to work well. Some people say swapping to R3 helps though.

Returnal is everything I hoped it would be and more. I just started late tonight in Biome 1, and I'm not even to the first boss yet, but it's already fantastic. It gives you a false sense of security, because you can scout out a route and be really careful for awhile taking hardly any damage and then suddenly get caught off-guard with something new. My first run, I was taking stuff down with my little sidearm and jumping around all the bullet hell stuff. Then, I walked into a room with this huge beast that killed me in one hit. I never encountered it again (whatever it was). Also, at one point, I started using the doors to retreat and reload, and then I'd go back through, kill another enemy, and retreat again. Then, I encountered enemies that would morph through the doors and doors that would go on lockdown until you killed everything in the room. One thing I didn't know going in is that weapon proficiency carries across runs, so, if you pick up a weapon you've used a lot in previous runs, it will be better than weapons you haven't used as much. That's a cool mechanism. This game also makes great use of haptic feedback and 3-D audio. This feels like Housemarque's turning point like Horizon: Zero Dawn was for Guerrilla or Ghost of Tsushima was for Sucker Punch. I was working on the platinum for Outriders and playing a bit of Nier Replicant, but everything else is getting put down for awhile.

I made it to Phrike and was almost to the third phase when he caught me off-guard with a melee strike to finish me off. It's definitely challenging, but it doesn't feel unfair so far. I can think back to the things I should have done differently after each run, and I'm slowly making progress.

I'm sure you probably know but dash is invincible i-frames. As soon as he's somewhat close, dash away. holding dash makes you dash farther. you can also re-map controls. Also, in his third phase when he's 3/4 or so low he does a sided sweeping laser beam thing. Goes to both sides so dash twice.

I would give it another shot if I picked up for next to nothing. I don't think it was one of Insomniac's best games. I just found it way over the top and trying to force an extreme vibe to the game. It was a complete miss for me.

I actually didn't know you could hold dash to dash farther. Thanks for the tip!

It's hard to find a less likeable protagonist.

Returnal has some "cheats" programmed into it. Or developer tools. Basically, if you hook a keyboard up to the PS5 and hit some buttons you can spawn weapons. If you're in Act 1 you can restart with all artifacts and equipment as well.

I may need to look into this because I had a hard crash that corrupted my game. Had to reinstall completely, wouldn't even load. Also means I have to start all the way over, which I'm not very keen on

That must be why the plat numbers are taking off on psnprofiles.

It doesn't help 100% as really it's used to spawn weapons. Not sure if people will find more. The "reset" is basically used to run through the level, buy stuff and get more health, reset and repeat. I did it cause Biome 3 and those fudging Tie Fighters made getting to the boss with health and upgrades a pain. One you beat Biome 3 all your stuff resets and you lose all progress. Managed to beat Biome 4 without the weapon spawn and got wrecked in 5.

I saw it on Reddit but Reddit isn't seemingly working on mobile right now.

I'm not sure. The gold Trophies are all RNG based and this cheat was just found in the past 8 hours or so.

Don't know if you guys are using the rest mode in Returnal @Dasgessabel @Bleed_DukeBlue but it's getting an update tomorrow so if you put it in rest mode turn updates off, otherwise you'll lose progress and start over. Wonder if the cheats will be removed with the update.
