Started the Last Guardian last night. So far... I don't like it. I'll give it another shot probably tonight but it's not grabbing me yet.

Last Guardian doesn't get better. I tried giving it 4-5 hours before calling it quits... frustrating controls, bad camera, and commanding bird dog isn't fun

The Last Guardian didn't grab me initially either. It took me 2-3 tries to get into it. The controls and the camera aren't very good at all and some of the puzzles are needlessly obtuse. I definitely had a love/hate relationship with the game, but I'm glad I stuck with it because the journey ends up being really, really special and Trico is pretty freaking amazing!

I enjoyed Last Guardian. I wouldn't say I loved it but it held my attention long enough for me to finish it. I definitely really enjoyed the last few hours especially though.

The Last Guardian was okay. The only part that annoyed me was when Trico wouldn't listen for the life of me, but I guess that was part of the overall core game.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - albeit getting my ass handed to me by the mini-bosses over and over and over again, this game is a damn fine 9/10 so far. Loving it. HURT ME MORE SNAKE!!!

20 hours maybe. It honestly felt like there was so much wasted potential up until that point which just made me so angry. But then the story begins to come together and you get to know your party members better. That's also the point when I realized that combat is tied to the affinity meter so you need to fight alongside every party member if you want to raise your affinity and unlock each level of their social link. And since I really like the characters and want to max their social links, combat feels like less of a chore. The game does a poor job of explaining all of this to you and it's just one of many areas where the game is a bit of a mess. I don't know if you'll grow to like the story and your party members as much as I have so it's tough to really recommend sticking with it. There are definitely much better games out there to spend your time with.

Just beat it. And I'm sad because the game completely fizzles out at the end. The devs had good ideas but the execution is just really, really poor. So much to say, but I want to wait til you've beaten it. I'm not even going to write a review because it's just going to be long ass rant lol. And I just watched some footage on Youtube and the game looks soo much better on the PS4 vs the Switch. I usually don't care about graphics at all, but I'm kinda kicking myself for not going PS4 on this one. Going to jump into Sekiro later tonight. I need something top tier to wash the taste of mediocrity out of my mouth.

I'm not usually that into souls but sekiro does look pretty interesting. Maybe because it does have character and is a little more narrative focused.

After an rpg break maybe you can get Tokyo Xanadu eX+ in..that will make you forget about CE as well. If the midgame is going to get more solid I think I'll be ok pushing forward, ending fizzle is sad but you play enough RPGs and you get a little used to it in less than top tier stuff.. closing seems to be many rpgs problem.

Honestly, even the top-tier JRPGs have an issue ending things properly. Someone needs to tell these devs to stop padding out the length of their final dungeons. Thankfully I was at a high enough level at the end of Caligula where I could just run past enemies in the final dungeon without aggroing them. And even with all the battles I avoided, the dungeon just seemed like a never-ending maze with a bunch of backtracking. Just really bad design.

Tokyo Xanadu is definitely on my shortlist of games to play after Sekiro. I'm kinda interested in picking up Days Gone next month, but I'm still on the fence about that game so I might just wait for a price drop and play Yakuza 6, RDR2, or Tokyo Xanadu instead.

On the Soulsborne games...I think I passed on everything pre Bloodborne for the same reasons. I just didn't think I'd enjoy something without a focused narrative, but I was so wrong. Bloodborne was legit like a religious experience for me. It's the game I didn't know I needed in my life and I spent hours pouring over the lore once I beat it trying to make sense of it all. I know for a fact you'll dig that part of it. I can't think of a single game with more compelling lore. It's just whether or not you're willing to put in the time needed to "git gud". It was a complete shock to the system for me initially because I must have died 50+ times the first night I played the game, but you learn the game's systems and you figure out what works and what doesn't. The sense of accomplishment when you finally overcome an obstacle is indescribable! Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to play Sekiro last night, but tonight is the night for sure. I just hope it can recapture some of the magic I felt when I played Bloodborne.

I did preorder days gone, I am pretty excited to play it, early impressions from people who have gotten to play are quite good, saying the extra time has really rounded the game out and its nice and polished, and there is a lot more going on than you think. im not out much on it, my brother and I will share the cost and i'll play it then he can play it and then i'll trade it.

ya I think the lore of bloodborne seems interesting, im really surprised they haven't done anything else with it, maybe they are waiting for ps5 because they know they need to really be able to blow the first away.

ya I ranted about final dungeons in the rpg thread a little bit ago, I dread final dungeons because its like you already know.

and yes Tokyo Xanadu!! make sure its the ps4 version though.

I'm hoping Days Gone is good. I think it will be. I have some faith in the Sony Bend studio. I am not going to preorder it but will check it out post-launch for sure. I just hope it doesn't try to be a Last of Us clone.

And YES @Heavyd814life - Bloodborne is such a religious experience. Good analogy! It's my favorite cryptic story in the entirety of the Soulsborne games. Not only does it delve into religion, but extra terrestrial life as well and has some really messed up moments, especially if ya get all the items and go for that true ending.

And in terms of JRPG's, I've been playing Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition on my Switch lately and it's a really fun game. A bit too heavy on dialogue at times, but the combat is really fun and engaging. I never thought a hack and slash traditional JRPG would work this well, but Tales does it seamlessly. So far it's about an 8/10 for me.

ToV was really dialog heavy throughout the game, its one thing I noticed pretty quickly. Every time you entered a new town you had a dialog filled cutscene followed by your team all splitting up then you had to find them each of them one by one and have a lengthy talk with each one before you could see another cut scene just to continue with the story. Felt like they did it to artificially extend the length of the game. It got to the point where I could skip all non story related cut scenes.

Earlier Tales games had that splitting up thing but it was mostly optional to trigger the skits. I havent played Vesperia yet

Ya, I'm at the point where I just wanna skip the little cutscenes at times to just get on with it. Like the story is okay and all, but I just want to get back to the action most of the time. It does feel like they're padding play time thru cutscenes. Howlongtobeat.com says the story is about 42 hours, but I'm guessing half of that is spent with dialogue scenes.

Took me 72 hours but I did a bunch of side stuff too. By about the 2nd town I was done with all non-story related dialog and would just skip it because I caught on to all the padding they were adding to the game.

some of the skits are really good, vesperia's skits are among the best in the series. some of it is nice character development, some of it is just a chance to throw in a yuck yuck here or there.

I skipped 100% of every single skit. I would "activate" them but only becuase there is an achievement tied to "watching" them all. There are hundreds of them in the game and I had no interest in sitting through hours more dialog in a game which was already padded with a bunch of unnecessary dialog to begin with. I also didn't really care about any character in Vesperia except for Patty.

The Surge is really good for the first 8-ish hours, then it falls off a cliff. Difficulty spike is insane. It goes from being, hey level up a bit to get through this area. To, you need spend hours and hours grinding to make your gear better so you can then spend hours still being ganked by mobs of enemies who never flinch.

The trailer yesterday had a bunch of hidden continued story elements about the Sirens so it seems as though we're most likely getting an announcement about a sequel. BL1 has been rated through the ESBR or whatever, so that's for sure coming, most are expecting it to be a preorder bonus or something much in the vein of how Stick of Truth was a preorder bonus for TFBW. I personally have zero interest in replaying BL1, mostly because I'm not restarting from scratch and BL2 was the far superior game and I'm not looking to revisit 1 any time soon. There was also some BL2 stuff posted to Twitter last week, so Switch may be getting a Handsom Jack port.

The backlash that Gearbox will receive if this isn't BL3 would be on the same level as if Valve was holding a Half Life related announcement, teased HL3, then showed a BR game or a HL1 remaster. Correct, the lore is fantastic so there is definitely a story that is told. It's just not told through more traditional means. I know some From fans were disappointed that they got away from this approach in Sekiro.

Plus occasional ps plus sales are good

Not like i needed ps3 games or vita (dont have one) but thought quantity or quality of ps4 selection would improve

Yoshi's Crafted World {Nintendo Switch} 7/10
I was originally planning on playing through this spread out over the weekend, but I had it beaten by Thursday evening.

Each world only has 2 or 3 levels in it, but they expect you to play each level a couple extra times with an additional objective (example: finding the 3 Poochy dogs and finishing the level with them within the time limit, or throwing an egg at a specific object hidden in the background). I felt that is almost like they were artificially padding the game's length out, but those are all optional objectives anyway.

I didn't die on any boss until the final one, and during the normal levels I died maybe 3 times total. Is it wrong to expect a little bit of a challenge, Nintendo? You already have "mellow mode" for the people who want it to be easy... I remember Yoshi's Island DS being so difficult later on in the game but every entry since then has just been too easy and this is no exception.

I need to dig out my copy of Yoshi's Woolly World on Wii U and do a little graphics comparison because from what I remember in my mind that game looked better than this and that shouldn't be the case because this is running on Unreal Engine 4. I dislike how things in the background have kind of a blurry look to them. I noticed it in the reveal trailer and hoped they'd fix that before the game was finished, but they didn't. I've noticed it in the reveal trailer for Link's Awakening remake too, so they're probably using the same engine.

There were only a few levels I really enjoyed, especially one in a haunted house with zombie Shy Guys. That's probably going to be one of the more memorable levels for a lot of people in this game, I just wish there were more like it. That was probably the closest this game had to a "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy" level that left a "that was cool" feeling after you complete it.

Obviously I'm not saying it was a bad game if I could play through it in one 8 hour session, because it isn't often I can play a game that long. I am even considering going for 100% completion, which I haven't done on any previous Yoshi game.

I'm enjoying it so far. When I read your initial post in the last game you beat thread saying it took you 8 hours, I was a little taken aback because I've had about 3 hours in it already and haven't even gotten the first gem. Looks like you were just plowing through, and I'm going back for the side missions and such, so that explains it.

Honestly though, for a plowthough of a 2d platformer with no backtracking, 8 hours seems like a good amount. I imagine 25ish hours to 100% it, which is about the high end of how long as I usually want to play a game these days.

Also, the blur effect on the background is intentional. You can tell because when you aim an egg at a targetable background object, it comes into focus. It's a stylistic choice that I think is neat, but I can see how it would bother some folks.

Ya all the newer Deus Ex games I felt were slow burns, but once you're fully engulfed and engaged into it's world it sucks you in real nicely until the bitter end. It does take a few hours into it to get into the meat of the game for that to happen though and some may not have the patience for that. I'm all for a slow burn story if it holds my interest and I'm a conspiracy guy so I guess that helped the case with Deus Ex.

Haven't played MD, but Invisible War and HR have yet to really grab me like the first one did.

been messing around with a few things, haven't had a lot of long stretches to sit down and really play on the Caligula effect lately, and a couple I have cities skylines pulled me in. this tends to be the busy season around here with kids activities and stuff.

still playing cities skylines.. sometimes I don't realize how long ive been sitting there til my hands start hurting, or im hungry all of a sudden and realize ive been sitting there three or four hours. if you ever liked SimCity this everything it should have always been, so much better. the definitive city building game, adding In the industries, park life, green cities dlc etc there is just so much content, paradox games are always pretty well supported and have a lot of content, crusader kings and Victoria will pull you in just as much. if you aren't into time sinks stay away, but if you're looking for the top levels of quality then paradox is whats up.

had a few mins yesterday and turned on cultist simulator. its a weird little card based game that is high on art and exposition, or wants to be, but there isn't really much gameplay.. you have to balance your rest, money and dread levels or you game over, but there is nothing telling you how to do any of it, got it in a humble, glad I didn't buy it. like morticians tale its trying to say something (and fails, morticians tale is so freaking terrible) more than its trying to be a game.

Xcom 2 on PC with the Long War 2 mod, its a reworking of the game into something more playable, I loved enemy unknown, did not love xcom 2. this is some better but some of the frustrations remain. not sure how much i'll end up playing it. it turns the game into more of a simulation of a global guerilla resistance movement rather than just being about the avatar project, which I felt made the game unplayable. go here and stop this blacksite and decrease the avatar countdown, oh wait you cant go there because you need to establish comms. go and get resources and comms.... oh too late the project is done game over.

Orwell - not really much gameplay, its a game in the way that papers please is a game, its not really a visual novel, but its more than a puzzle game.. kind of? Im enjoying this one, its obviously about the future and big brother is watching, and you work for big brother and are trying to investigate some people possibly connected to some terrorist actions, but it shows that the misinterpretation of the data can lead to some pretty bad outcomes.

ive been on a pc kick lately as you can see. i'll be back to ps4 when I can get some time to sit down with Caligula while resisting cities, and ive got days gone preordered and looking forward to that.

Been getting my feet wet still in Sekiro but I am progressing slowly and surely. So far it's a 9/10 for me and has the potential of being my GOTY contender next to DMC5 and RE2. I can't believe we are only through 1 quarter of 2019 and already have 3 potential GOTY choices. What a time to be alive! yes

DMC5 rules. 2nd best DMC game. Blows away the other more recent entries in the series.

Absolutely. I love it just as much, if not a teeny bit more than DMC3.

DMC5 is amazing! I've got it just ahead of DMC3 as well, but not by much.

I've still got a special place in my heart for DMC3 SE Played through it again fairly recently. Just superb.

But ya I am genuinely impressed with 5, better than I expected it to be.

I just finished doing my video review of DMC5 on my YT channel. I included some DMC3 clips and references because I couldn't not give that game it's just dues. DMC3 was perfect indeed. DMC5 is just as perfect. I hope they don't lose this development team if they ever plan on doing a DMC6. They got the chemistry is just right.

Beat far Cry 5 today, good stuff. Other than the really intense beginning it never captivated me quite like FC4 did but still really enjoyable overall. Just didnt feel the need to do all the missions or side missions
I expected to die at least once during the last part so I guess it was easier than I thought it would be, certain parts were way harder and more frustrating

Now I gotta decide what's next...child of light, arkham knight, fallout 4 are in the mix atm

Can't really go wrong with any of those choices. Those are three very good games.

Toby: The Secret Mine {Nintendo Switch} 7/10
At first glance you might confuse this with Limbo, or some other 2D platformer with a dark silohuette art style (though the backgrounds are more colorful here). They're becoming really common these days.
As far as the story is concerned, I never quite understood what was happening. There was no intro to give you a heads up about why you're doing what you're doing. You're just thrown into the game and you see a shadowy villain and you're expected to chase him and so that's what you do through the whole game while solving some easy puzzles along the way through 21 levels. Once you've reached him and complete that last level you basically just get a "The End" screen and still no explanation as to why you did all of that. I'm ok with that, though. I really enjoy Nintendo's games and it's certainly not because of the lame stories they come up with and recycle again and again, so I accept that as long as the gameplay is good, not every game needs a compelling story and this developer didn't even try.

You won't really get stuck much because the puzzles are not very difficult to figure out (some were easy enough to just guess my way through), plus there are checkpoints everywhere so you don't have to go back very far if you die (at most you'll lose a minute of progress but it was usually less than that). Combine that with it's a short game and I think it'd take most players a little under 2 hours to complete the first playthrough. I finished with 190 deaths and 21 out of 26 collectibles. While I did enjoy the game I have no desire to replay any levels and look for the remaining 5 because as far as I can tell they don't let you know what levels you missed them in.

So i ended up going with Child of Light and I'm really glad I gave it a chance, beautiful game
The battles are for the most part on the easy side at least for now but I'm okay with it. Level design reminds me of Rayman Legends occasionally haha
But yeah great stuff. Think i'm halfway thru

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered {PlayStation 4} 8/10
Damn, this brings back memories. I'm one of those guys (that appears to be in the minority now) who much preferred Infinity Ward's Call of Duty games over Treyarch's and whoever else they have working on the series these days. I do wish they had remastered the full Modern Warfare trilogy together as a collection instead of just one, but if their only option was to release one of them, they chose the right one at least.

This was a very solid single player campaign back in 2007 and it still is. While the first-person shooter genre has evolved quite a bit since this game's original release, it's still easy to go back to it, just as DOOM is.

And the multiplayer is also still as fun as it used to be. The maps feel so small though, and I know they always were, but it just feels more noticeable now. And I'm a simple man and I always preferred the 3/5/7 killstreak setup before they screwed with it in all the following games. Though I'm not as big into online first-person shooters now as I was in 2007 and I doubt I will put hundreds of hours into this like I did in the original release, I can see myself coming back to this now and then for at least the next couple of months. Oh and something that feels different about the multiplayer...barely anyone seems to be using a headset these days so the multiplayer is less toxic than it was on Xbox 360.

Darksiders 3 (Xbox One X) - 7.5/10 - A very fun entry for the Darksiders series but not without flaws. The story is entertaining, gameplay is mostly solid, boss battles were fun, visuals are decent and the connected maps in these games continue to impress me. I would knock the score down because of occasional long loading times, fairly frequent screen tearing and a massive glitch during both of the final two cutscenes, the first actually completely shut down my system and made me restart the entire boss battle. I have read online and some others have experienced this issue so I'm glad its not something wrong with my system. If you are a fan of the previous entries I would absolutely recommend checking this game out, I certainly hope they continue making more of them.

So I beat Child of Light a few days ago, only took me like 5 days but I'm pretty sure I put way more hours into it than the 10 I expected
Great game, ending felt kind of unfinished/rushed, so a slightly disappointing finish to an overall positive experience. Would highly recommend to anyone with even the slightest interest in turn based RPGs, it's the first one I have played in ages, it convinced me I was wrong to assume I was fully done with them forever.
I found out why the level design reminded me of Rayman Legends, same engine
Not gonna do new game + but nice to have that option.

Hitting Uncharted 4 next, can't wait

I played this on Vita. An excellent port of an excellent game. Hopefully there's a sequel.

I'm excited for you to play Uncharted 4 too. I'm debating on starting The Lost Legacy soon. Just need to finish Hulk: Ultimate Destruction first.

Indie roundup first impressions:

Blaster Master Zero - 8/10 - I was a huge fan of the original and enjoyed this one...biggest complaint was that it was too easy

Blaster Master Zero 2 - 8.5/10 - improved upon the original in every way. Harder, better map system, mini dungeons, and tank vs tank fights

Cuphead - 9/10 - only on second isle, but reminds me of a boss rush mode from Hollow Knight with awesome visuals. Everyone should buy this on Switch to support Xbox/Switch game alliance

Katana Zero - 9/10 - that style tho love I love the pixel art/atmosphere and the fast, over the top action

Gunman Clive HD Collection - 7.5/10 - basic fun shooter. It was only 3 bucks

Wargroove (post update) - 9.5/10 - I love me some advance wars....some of the custom made campaigns are amazing

Guacamelee 2 - 8/10 - it's fun...more of the same from the first game
