May 2021 Edition
Sega Genesis PlayStation Sega Master System Strider

Play through Strider on any platform before June 1 to earn the Strider, standing
still and looking cool
badge.

Play it on two platforms to earn the Strider, vertical slash badge.
{imgt}https://i.imgur.com/9HjCWfh.gif 137 75{imgt}
Play it on three platforms to earn the Strider, legion badge.
{imgt}https://i.imgur.com/1ybr4F5.gif 196 75{imgt}
Sure, all those GIFs are taken from Marvel vs. Capcom and not the original Strider
game, but I'm calling an audible because his hyper combo is cool. You know what else
is cool? Posting your #BeatIt screenshots... but I'm still not going to make you.

April 2021 Edition
Neo Geo Metal Slug X

Play through Metal Slux X on any platform before May 1 to earn the Metal Slug
Type-R
badge.

{imgt}https://i.imgur.com/JrlYysp.gif 75 75{imgt}
You don't have to post a #BeatIt screenshot, but I'll assume you're lying if you don't.

March 2021 Edition
Super Nintendo Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV

Play through Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV on one platform - the arcade original,
the famed Super Nintendo port, one of the maligned 3D remakes, or another version
I've missed - before April 1 to earn the Leonardo badge.

{imgt}https://i.imgur.com/84g4Ulp.gif 75 75{imgt}
Play through the game on an additional platform before the deadline to earn the
Donatello badge.

{imgt}https://i.imgur.com/APLsn13.gif 75 75{imgt}
You have the option of posting your #BeatIt photos if you want me to nod approvingly
at your accomplishment, Johnson-style.

February 2021 Edition
Super Nintendo Super Turrican

Play through Super Turrican before March 1 to earn the Turrican badge.
{imgt}https://i.imgur.com/r65ITnG.gif 128 140{imgt}

Screenshots/Photos of your #BeatIt moment please your GOTM overlord, but they are
not required.

January 2021 Edition
Nintendo Entertainment System Jackal
Play through Jackal on one platform before February 1 to earn the Jackal Squad
badge.

{imgt}https://i.imgur.com/A65l9z4.png 96 96{imgt}
If you decide to play through a second time on a different platform, you'll also
earn the Medium Tank badge.

{imgt}https://i.imgur.com/pIuY45m.png 96 96{imgt}
For each platform you play through beyond the second (third, fourth, etc.), you'll earn a Heavy Tank badge.

For those of us without e-vote-tile dysfunction, it's time to vote for next month's game.

Nominees
Metal Slug X Neo Geo PlayStation
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game Nintendo Entertainment System
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Super Nintendo Game Boy Advance
Shadow Man PlayStation Nintendo 64 Sega Dreamcast
Ghouls 'n' Ghosts Sega Genesis Sega Master System Amiga Commodore 64 NEC Super Grafx

(We really need an arcade icon.)

Either publicly in this thread or privately in a PM to me, give each nominee 0-5 points. Omitting a nominee is equivalent to giving it a vote of 0. The game with the highest score by the end of the month will be the April 2021 GOTM.

Here are my votes:

Metal Slug X - 4
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game - 4
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 5
Shadow Man - 3
Ghouls 'n' Ghosts - 3

Pretty psyched to play this, I was falling asleep on the 1st or 2nd in front of my SNES.
Been meaning to at least try to get through it again ever since.

Thanks. It's an atgames. It's a pretty sweet machine that you can put any arcade game on it you want (granted if the chip can handle it. The cut off point is something like Golden Axe II, which has a lot of stuff going on. So it runs a lot of games, not much after 2003'ish.).

Okay I'm Jelly! So it's a stand up cabinet then? That's freaking awesome! You got the Simpsons arcade on it?
How many joysticks? 1? 2? ..... 4?!?

2 players. I only need one though lol. They are coming out with a smaller one for $400 single player. Yeah I'm pretty sure I have all of those games on it. It's got a trackball and spinner also for games like centipede, golden tee, etc. . You can set scanlines to vertical or horizontal.

Now that I've played the Arcade version, I realize that Re-Shelled was based on it, not the SNES version. That explains a lot of the "changes" in Re-Shelled that I didn't like. It was actually the SNES version that made changes, but I do prefer all of them.

I finally beat this gotm I'd give it a solid 5 except it did get way better towards the end.
So prolly a solid 6.5.
I had to get kinda wasted and listen to some hardcore punk to make it more fun though.
Overall I will probably play it again in the not too distant future.
The boss for Stage 7 is one of my fave turtles characters as well as playing pirate RockSteady and Bebop.
That plus the hoverboard stage was actually really fun. TMNT Mario Karts or F-Zero lol.

Anyways I hope we are playing something much better tomorrow.

Yea, I didn't start tracking until 2018, GotM was running for almost a year IIRC but it wasn't using a voting system.

It was just games picked by yours truly.

Everyone responded really well with the voting system, and we've gone through several iterations.

I think @Renaissance2K has been doing a phenomenal job as GotM Captain. A huge thanks for your time and hard work!

I clean up the OP a bit, and consolidated the 2020 line up.

Interesting notes:

June 2019 and 2020 are coincidentally 2 Castlevania games, Bloodlines and Rondo of Blood respectively.

October 2019 and 2020 are both Mario games: Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island respectively.

We had two Metroid games back to back, in August 2020 and September 2020, Metroid Fusion and Super Metroid respectively.

We already had a Metal Slug game last year.

I just looked it up, and I was mistaken. We never had Lttp as a GotM, it was one of those bonus games we used to do when giving out extra icons.

I just remember link holding a triforce as an icon, and thought that was a GotM.

My mistake.

FWIW, the Link icon is the Hyrulian Hero badge now in @Antipop's popular thread.

I nominated Link that month and it was literally the first gotm (neutopia I think it was called for TurboGrafx won instead) after we started I literally had no way to play so I stopped beating them every month since my streak was dead.

Btw Lunar, is Ninja Gaiden the only game we had twice as gotm?
It's prolly the most worthy of being the only one honestly but were there ever any other games you wanted to revisit now that we have more new faces than old playing gotm? (At least it seems that way to me now)

yes you must. And if you don't need a trackball and only single player you can save $200. They are very nice but be sure to ask me or learn about BYOG (bring your own game), coinopsx, bitpixel LED, and fans of sauce. That's where the real fun comes in. Not fun "out of box".

something about portrait style arcade games look really nice on the atgames legends. Maybe it's because the thing I have has "overlays" on each side, giving it a more arcadey look. Or the fact the screen is smaller it looks cute. I dunno but they look great!

Completed this. Played the ROM via RetroArch and yep this was very similar to 2 that I beat just last Sept or so... oh well.
I used save states, stupidly to limit myself to no deaths until the final boss - was a dumb decision as it took me likely longer to beat that way as I replayed some sections a bunch and some bosses a lot - the sub and train ones both sucked. I did a ton better with the climbing tower one this time around, I recall that one kicked my butt a bunch in 2 last year, I think I only died like 2-3 times and that was largely down to the 'jump out of the vehicle' button combo that I wasn't a fan of. The first boss in X is the same as a boss in 1 that I played last month, also the final backdrop in 1 and 2/X does look somewhat similar with the staircase on the left-hand side.

So I got the Super NT but the wireless 8bitdo is no longer in stock. Anyone have a really clean OEM SNES controller or brand new 8bitdo to sell me? I have the 8bitdo one for the genesis and really like it.

Oh on that note, if anyone has a really clean OEM genesis 6 button I'm interested in that also.

Story time:

I bought a European version of Solatorobo. This game is DSi-enhanced, so unless you have an original DS or DS lite, or you somehow have an EU DSi/3DS and it's reasonable, DON'T BOTHER. I got my copy for Ł80 on eBay, sealed Italian version, plays in English. Now that I have pulled that dumb stunt, Namco Bandai can now feel free to port this and Tail Concerto to the Switch. And finish Fuga of the Battlefield. sailorneorune importing stuff usually leads to a less-expensive version coming Stateside 1-2 years afterward.

Also, the transaction was a fat headache.

For reference, we DO have a DS Lite to play it on (got from here!)

And 80 euro plus a DS Lite is still way better than the cost of the US version.

As far as "plays in English," it is one of the 5-in-1 carts that plays in whatever language your DS is set to (French, German, English, Italian, or Spanish). So if you don't want to play in English you don't have to (maybe the jokes are funnier in German).

A while back the company had some sort of a recruitment drive to hire translators to work on this game. I applied, and got a sample of the script back.

The content of that tiny bit of script was so disturbing that it made me never want to touch any of their games, past or future. Especially since they're all supposed to take place in the same world...

Per Wikipedia:
The setting was based on France during World War II and was given a tone where the main characters "will experience the horrors and cruelty of war" but will "depict the bright and joyful atmosphere that the Little Tail Bronx series is known for."

Horrors and cruelty of war plus bright and joyful atmosphere... that ought to mix well.

Immediately brings to mind the unfinished Jerry Lewis film "The Day the Clown Cried" about a clown who gets sent to a concentration camp.

Oh no no. The things I read in that bit of script were so disturbing that I wouldn't be surprised if there's some real controversy surrounding it once it releases. It was genuinely the sickest thing I've read. It's not even the atrocities. It's the things that the characters are forced to do, or to choose.

The story might have a point, I just hate that they're doing this in THAT UNIVERSE.

We'll see what the ESRB rating is when it comes out. That ought to tell us part of what we need to know, since I assume you're NDA'd.
Foxhack

I never signed an NDA. Edit now that I think about it I do think I got an NDA... And they sent out that script to tons of people.

But it was also quite a while ago, and I am not giving any more specifics because I don't know if the game will continue down that path or not. Games change during development and I hope they realized they were going way too far.

Considering the topics I saw, though? No way it doesn't get anything less than an M rating if they don't tone things down.

The localization can easily just change everything. Almost sounds like it's some A Serbian Film level of gross, the way you're describing it.

Foxhack

Nah, it's war-related, not... like A Serbian Film. Also, this isn't something that could be "fixed" by localization. This was a core theme of the game. :|

Hard to get a grasp on what "it is" with vagueness. Maybe I'll look into it when it's released, supposed to be this year.

I mean, if we're talking war, we're probably talking torturing prisoners for information, slaughtering children and other civilians, executing anyone (friend or foe) who questions authority, knowingly sending people to their death a la the final scene of Blackadder Goes Forth, and potentially ordering other people to do that stuff. You know, but with the bright and joyful atmosphere the series is known for.

Maybe, but it gets more personal when you're an active participant instead of a passive observer.

(The tonal shift for the rest of the Blackadder series to that final scene is so stark, it was a huge sucker punch as you waited for the punchline only to realize there wasn't one.)

if you haven't watched Blackadder you're missing out on some fine British comedy. Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry... how can you go wrong?

Been working on my set up a bit. It's still not done. Got a gscartsw coming in from CastleMania who knows when they will ship. That should be the last piece to tie the systems together, but it's working fine right now with a temporary 3 way scart switch, I just gotta manually plug them into the other systems not plugged in. The cables in the back could be managed better but I didn't want to spend more time on it. First game I fired up after the set up is complete is of course Ninja Gaiden. Really rusty, got to level 4 or 5, and just kinda quit. It was late.

The shipping cost hurt, but they're so cute!

I also got a Switch controller adapter for use with GameCube, Wii, and NES/SNES Classic controllers, as well as a much-needed PS4 controller charging cable.
