These requirements make me laugh (just received a welcome email). All 3 of my chromecast ultra's are hardwired, as are my PC's, but these are unrelastic expectations for average Joe. Either way, looking forward to playing it this week/next and reporting back!

-----------------

Please read this before you start playing.
We've created a short list of essential steps to help you have the best possible experience with Stadia.

Connect your Google Chromecast Ultra to your router with an Ethernet cable. A wired connection between Chromecast and your router can make a big difference when playing games on your TV.

If you don't have that option, set up your wireless router in the same room as your Chromecast, but keep them at least a foot away from one another.

If playing over Wi-Fi and your home Wi-Fi network supports both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, use the 5Ghz network.

Set up your Stadia Controller, Chromecast Ultra, and other devices you play on (like your laptop or phone) on the same network.

Don't forget to check your TV settings and make sure Game Mode and Ultra High Definition (UHD) are turned on (if available on your television).

Make sure you're using the Google Home App (available for free on the Play Store and the iOS App Store) to set up your Chromecast before setting up Stadia.

For the best performance, don't stream movies or music to other devices in other parts of the house while playing games on Stadia. It can slow things down.

These steps can make your time playing games on Stadia much more seamless and enjoyable. If you need more help setting things up properly, check out g.co/stadia/help. Enjoy Stadia!

Happy playing,

The Stadia team

I think at some point, they'll need to also adopt the xCloud strategy, but for now ... this should be pretty sweet for what it is. Now just to see what games you get with the $10 Pro Tier.

Right now, the only Pro games are Destiny 2 and Samurai Shodown.

Not having a "Resume" feature yet is a serious buzzkill. Being able to play on any screen isn't super worthwhile if I have to restart the game every time I make the jump.

I say both. Some games can be included in the package, but then you can also buy games. Vudu for instance offers streaming on a ton of free movies, but you can still buy whatever they don't have. Amazon Prime offers streaming of thousands of TV shows and movies, but you can still still buy or rent ones they don't have.

The response is really negative.

The Verge review shows "4K" is like 1080p and looks worse than Xbox, the "1080p" looks like 720p and overall it's not looking too great.

Other reviews are saying the same. Destiny is apparently 1080p "upscaled" to 4K then resulting in a not so great 1080p picture anyways.

So it's not even as good as Xbox One X and the new consoles are coming out next year, as well as xcloud.

RIP Stadia..

Nope, just a Chromecast ultra. All processing in the cloud.

It's not 4K like they promised, it's either 1440p30 or 1080p60 with some stuttering and latency.

I'm not sure who this was marketed for exactly but if "it works" is the highest praise it gets then Google is in for a fun ride.

I'm interested in your thoughts.

Seems like it has some promise but it's basically a beta test at this point. If the image currently comes out worse than an X1X they better beef it up considering how the PS5/Scarlett are going to look.

And supposedly it's eating up to 20 gigs per hour of data? I'm honestly really not sure who this is supposed to be targeting.

That VentureBeat write up brought up something interesting, guy said that Google is touting the fact that you can 'play anywhere' and he was considering going to Starbucks to try it out. That got me thinking, I'm not a Starbucks person, but I will use my phone on just about any free in-store WiFi that I can and EVERY Time I've done that the connection has been absurdly slow. I normally don't watch videos either, just try to access websites. So how does Google get away with suggesting that its Stadia customers could just go into Starbucks or another coffee shop/restaurant and actually play their games on those free and often crazy slow and unreliable WiFi connections?

I wonder how many customers will try this and be pissed when it fails?

To be fair, on a phone you can probably do 720p and everything will fine so I assume you can use a slower connection and it should be OK. You don't need 4K on a 5.5" phone.

I think the ability to play RDR2 or Destiny 2 at Starbucks is kind of cool, but only for about 5 minutes. It's extremely gimmicky. Who the hell is doing that? If you have that kind of time why not go home and play on a TV. This whole "play anywhere" concept is not really for the masses, they have to carry around a controller and that Claw thing everything they go? Guys don't carry purses and girls are mostly not going to bust out Destiny or RDR2.

Even the Switch play 95% handheld, but at my house. I don't take it with me barely ever at all.

It may sound like I'm defending Stadia, and I'm not. It's got a ton of hurdles it needs to clear to be a viable platform.

But can we take a moment to let it do its thing? If it fails, you can always say your piece "I told you, so!"

While I agree it doesn't really know its own core audience, just because you don't play outside of your home, doesn't mean other people don't.

I actually don't either, but I can imagine someone who has to wait in a dentist or doctor office busting out their phone to play Destiny 2 for 30-45 minutes, instead of reading Cosmopolitan.

I don't want it to fail. I don't really care if it fails or not, because I have GPU for 3 years and if I wanted to do something like this I'd be on xcloud anyways.

I just don't see people carrying around the controller everywhere they go, that's a big deal, it's not just your phone. You cannot play Destiny 2 with touch controls. It's a big controller and a clip and your phone. You're going to buy Destiny 2 and RDR2 full price just to do this?

And the problem is that Sony and MS are going to do the same thing using xcloud, which has better infrastructure than Google, so everything Stadia does now xcloud will do better.

So should we be optimistic about a company that more often than not kills its ideas and leaves adopters high and dry? I just don't see who is going to pay for this. It's day 1, and I just feel like "give it a chance" doesn't mean anything, because of course we're going to say what we think about it initially.

It's either going to work or it's not. I don't care if it does, but if I had to bet I would say it's going to die because it's "more powerful and Xbox One X and PS4 Pro combined" yet the graphics are worse than Xbox One X, it doesn't offer any of the cool features it touted, ti doesn't have "negative latency" and in fact has more latency than console, and it's probably not even going to be as good as xcloud for "on the go gaming" not to mention the Swtich is already better for on the go than all of the above because what Dentist office has a strong Wifi connection?

Yeah that's what i thought, i don't see this ending well for the people that bought into this. i feel we are not ready for something like this now and the more time goes by the worse it will get for stadia, because of xcloud. they can just sit back and learn from googles mistakes then come out with something better. and if google hasn't abandoned the system yet they will after xcloud comes out.

A lot of Stadia's benefits aren't really going to come to fruition until it's been around for a while, like when we transition from one generation to the next and Stadia customers suddenly don't need to shell out for an upgrade.

This is a fast-moving industry, though, and if it doesn't gather hype now, it's going to have a hard time playing catch-up. Microsoft managed to do it with the Xbox One after a resounding thud of a launch, but they were an existing player in the market with an existing, respected reputation.

Google almost seems to be starting one step below any other new player in the gaming market. I remember when Twitch was shopping for a buyer, and they bailed out of the pending Google deal because all of their fans said, "Please no... Anybody but Google," which is how they ended up being purchased by Amazon, for better or worse.

@longhornsk57 and @Lunar - I'm not trying to argue, but I'm still not sure even at 720p, that I've ever been connected to a free WiFi at a restaurant, office, or store where I was able to get a fast enough speed to even stream Netflix, let alone video ads on random websites. Now if a user wanted to play RDR2 or whatever for 5-15 mins over their 4G data that's another story, but unless businesses in larger metro areas pay for much better WiFi that's free to customers, I just don't see it.

I'm not really trying to dig on Stadia, was just a bit surprised that Google was pushing that 'Play Anywhere' angle since they also suggest you don't stream video on the same connection when you're at home. When in public, there's always someone already streaming and hogging up the limited bandwidth from free WiFi connections.

Who's saying it sold below expectations? If it sold below expectations, why did the Founder's Edition sell out?

Also, what company (besides EA, who has the patience of a two-year-old that just ate a barrel of Skittles) pivots after one day of a platform's release?

The bandwidth consumption is a problem, but I think people are fudding the crap out of that as well and ignoring the bandwidth cap options. Like this article from Digital Trends:

> In our extensive testing, a Google Pixel 3a smartphone playing Destiny 2
> over Wi-Fi consumed data at a rate of 10.2 gigabytes every hour. That's

I don't think they can compete against Xcloud TBH. They have a way smaller library, there is no download and play on local hardware option, and the latency between the two services right now isn't in Stadia's favor. They'll need a big overhaul for this thing to catch on.

that's what i expected. too bad they can't come up with a fix like retroarch did with run ahead input lag. i was going to say the only kind of games i would play with that kind of lag are turn based, but even menu navigation would probably annoy me lol i wonder what kind of connection that guy used. it might be even worse on public wifi.

That was a reviewer at Washington Post and in those .gifs he had access to highspeed internet. He said it was the same as when he tried it at home also with highspeed internet and he had similar internet. Said its better with the Stadia controller, with anything else its really bad.

A few minutes in... It's kinda sweet. The controller is a bit funky with the feel, but the ease of starting a game from your phone is awesome. So far, zero lag/stutter.

Not hating it.

... and then my internet farted and the Destiny locked up. My internet came back, but the game did not. Was just stuck in a constant walk forward. Was expecting the game to be paused in some capacity, it did not. I can see where this might be a nightmare in some games. Safe to assume they'll (hopefully) build some safeguards on connection degradation.

Wanted to report back, while I haven't tried wifi at Starbucks yet, so far my testing have been fine for both titles (SamSho and Destiny 2).

SamSho the latency was more noticeable, but I adjusted after a round, and I was executing special moves without fail.

Destiny 2 is VERY smooth. I only had one stuttering which very quickly caught up with itself after about 2 seconds, and the rest of game time have been smooth.

Only 1080p and my home wifi testing so far, will hook up to the 4K big screen to check it out.

TBH, this is feasible (if Google can keep up with the hurdle jumping).

Although I'll say the whole experience hasn't been as smooth, as I had to wait for my invite code AFTER I received the Stadia.

I contacted Google CS, and they told me to contact the Stadia team, I requested a call back from the Stadia team and a few hours later, got the invite code email.

Have you played Samurai Shodown on a local console? I noticed some lag in Shodown myself, but I had no way of verifying if it was networking-related or just the game engine, since the Shodown games generally play with a bit more slug.
