new Thread Description
Wow, can't believe it's been more than a year since we started RTT. I feel like we have become a community of our own within GameTZ. We have our regulars and even some new comers. I hope 2018 brings us more like-minded retro gamers who will come here for a place of retro inspiration. When I started Retro Trade Thead (RTT), it was called "The Retro Trading Thread", kinda like how FB was "The Facebook", heh, I was just hoping for a group of retro gamers who share the passion and the thrill of collecting and playing Retro games. The result so far has exceeded my expectations and more. I am playing more retro games than ever and while my collecting is on and off, I know I have been enjoying more retro gaming in 2017 than my previous 5 years combined. I hope RTT members have similar experiences. 2018 will be an even better year, as we have established group events like RTT Secret Santa and our monthly Game of the Month, which is getting more popular as more people participate. I am hoping to bring RTT Podcast in 2018 where 2-3 RTT members will talk about monthly topics and other aspects of retro collecting.

Retro game buying and selling, collecting, playing, collectarding, upscaling, speedrunning....whatever your retro passion is, RTT will have a place for you and for everyone who participates in our discussions, whether occasionally or frequently, will continue to find value and fun in our thread.

Thank you for participating and making RTT the hottest topic every month in 2017!

Old Topic Description

This thread was originally created to encourage traders here at GTZ to do more trading, especially retro related stuff. It has turned into a lot more and I am so grateful to everyone who contributed to this thread and have kept it going for nearly 6 months now. I hope this thread will continue to thrive and everyone who reads/participates in this thread will gain some value or knowledge out of it.

We will still have Trade lists up here, though it's been a while since anyone updated. I encourage everyone to look over their lists and post updates.
There is also a section for gorgeous pictures of game rooms that active participants of this thread have shared. Feel free to share some pics of your collection or game room.
I will be adding another section for information regarding video quality of retro gaming systems on modern displays and how to improve them.
There is rather some extensive discussion regarding how to improve the display quality of retro gaming systems and if you are new to this like I am, you will find it very informative.

Old Old Topic Description

GTZ has become a marketplace where the most commonly traded commodity is PayPal. I want to start an effort to get some trades going and to discuss some good games perhaps you never heard of or interested in but want to discover/know more of. For example, I just got intto shmups after years of ignoring the genre and I love to discover new(to me) and rediscover old ones(Sonic Wings comes to mind).

No pressure here. Feel free to discuss anything retro. Perhaps throw out some WTTF targets and what you have to offer. I am sick of browsing people's year old Available lists.

Some examples:

- WTTF/WTB/LF
- What you think is awesome game/series/whatever
- Potential games you have up for trade
- Pics of what you have/what you would love to get/what you think is the bestest awesomest game ever
- Show off your latest finds/adds to your collection

total for me was $213.14. Shipping was 23.15 which is high af but still much cheaper than eBay.

Me too! It's a solid lineup of titles and some I'm not familiar with. Battle Chasers looks cool, it was nice to see a JRPG in there.

Was a random pickup from my local retro shop. He gets in nice SNES oddities from time to time. I'm not keeping it but figured I'd play it and pass it along.

Or people don't think to look anywhere else. It's weird to think about because we are all smart about stuff but not everyone is. I've also seen OSSCs and Framemeisters go for way more on eBay. The FM in particular was really brutal because for awhile it was sold out from the official distributor and it's not like they notified people when it was restocked.

Paypal isn't accepted by that website, so at worst you could call it a "Funny Money" conversion tax. Seller eats thirteen percent off the top, and the system's like, $230-240 after shipping because they gouge the fudge out of you to make up for whatever merchant fees are applied by the salefront.

I don't think anyone's under the impression that it's sold out, though up until a few weeks ago it was on preorder status, so effectively it was.

That'd be kinda silly, considering there aren't any dual shock controllers for it.

That I can play on one screen with ~4 people without split screen like it's 1995, I should've clarified. Anything in the Steam sale is a bonus too.

Assuming these people are adults, that are casual gamers at best ... the Jackbox games are perfect. Without double checking, I think 2 and 3 offer the best games, but they just released the new set, with a new YDKJ, so that ones prob pretty good as well.

Jackbox party pack is so good. The one where you draw stuff on your phone and people have to guess what it is, Drawful I think it's called, is 100% my favorite.

Yeah I wish I had it in me to swap and do Claire then leon just once, but my schedule is just choking me out. I might try tonight to just blast through 4 hours of intense zombie murdering action, we'll see.

How do I cheaply record 720p, 60fps from my retro consoles? I don't really want to game next to my desktop and my Macbook Air isn't powerful enough for something like an Elgato HD60 S. Are there really no high quality standalone devices for this? Do I just need to lug around a giant gaming laptop and one of these USB3 things?

I would like to know too. But I used this, which can record in its own to a micro SD. Issues with OSSC though. FM should be fine, but I didn't get to try it before I returned it.

I know this ps mini is the worst way to play these games, I had really hoped they would put out something really good just to be spared from the ramblings of casuals on facebook but for releasing a turd they deserve it. hopefully if it does poorly they will learn their lesson, which it wont, these things are more for casuals than people like us and they love this stuff.

That's the thing, even if this was loaded with good games would we care? I'd rather just buy PS1 games I want or emulate them on the PC I already have.

I'll get the Elgato I guess, it's like half the price used. Everything seems like it has compromises or problems. Ada's gaming laptop is probably fine for just 720p encoding.

Excellent points... I wouldn't want it even if it was loaded with all the best stuff. It's a new era where gaming products aren't being targeted at the old core group.

I made the mistake of commenting on a YouTube video about the collectibility of these things and how they weren't nearly as collectible as the actual games and the casuals went nuts. Learned my lesson.

Advent Children hype. I remember that well. One of the stores here legit had over 50 copies of FFVII at the time (I used to work there, I don't remember how many for sure but there was definitely a PS1 Final Fantasy section of the storage shelving) and got down to 0 pretty fast.

Did anyone let go of their NES or SNES cartridges when the classics were released? I'm thinking of playing Super Metroid and I'm not sure if it's worth bringing out the old SNES and worrying if the battery still works in the cartridge. It's so much more convenient on the classic.

This is pretty wild to me but like I mentioned earlier it's easy to forget about all the more casual types. When I want to emulate, I don't really care how I do it. Those classic systems are really easy plug and play, so I would assume that's a big draw for some people.

I love my AV Famicom and I like having NES and Famicom carts around.

@Foxhack I'm kind of interested in your Pokmon card list. Been thinking of getting some older cards back in the collection (pretty much missed out on the whole HeartGold/SoulSilver block). I don't plan on throwing around $50 for a single card though... seeing the MTG nuts at the FLGS do that like it's nothing makes me want to punch things.

But I digress. If and when you have a list handy, please drop me a PM.

Maybe I should start a Pokmon TCG trade thread in my forum...

The thing about spending lots of money on Magic cards is that it is extremely easy to get most of if not all of your money back. You might even turn a profit. At worst you pay 20% of the value to have loaned the cards for w/e period.

MTGO is for people that actually want to play Magic.

It doesn't make sense to lump God of War and Adventure in the same universe. It's like if you said the first Walking Dead book is old enough to be vintage, so now it's in the same category as a 1950s Jimmy Olsen book. Group games by style and type, not purely age.

I don't think that "retro" is a practical descriptor. It's most commonly used as a buzzword and everyone has a different opinion on the characteristics of a "retro" item. Ideally, any meaningful video game discussion or categorization is going to delineate generations or eras.

it goes back to the vintage/classic/retro argument and how they aren't used correctly. Mario 3 isn't a retro game, its a vintage/classic game. these new pixel arty games coming out are retro style games. retro is something in the style of something old, whereas classic or vintage is the old thing the retro thing is based on. I think I said that how I wanted to lol.

Books, comics, films all have a much longer history than games. While I agree retro isn't the right word, but I think it's been widely used to describe something different than intended and now is stuck.
