Description

HBO's series "Oz" is one of the best television shows to grace cable TV. It is driven by a magnificent cast and is fueled by well-written scripts. The show follows the inmates of Oswald Maximum Security Prison, as they do hard time. Murder, rape and vulgar language make this show not suitable for everyone. But, if you've even contemplated committing a crime, you'll be better off watching this show just to get a taste of what prison life is like.

"Oz" is an unflinching look into the lives of some of the most ruthless men put on this planet. In the mix, you have Tobias Beecher (Lee Tergensen), who was a lawyer back in the real world, but is sent to "Oz" after he kills a kid while driving drunk. In the first season, you see him as a person who isn't street smart, isn't tough and he sure as hell isn't ready for prison. You see him turn from Vernon Schillinger's (J.K. Simmons) dog, to a doped up wildcat, ready to take on any and everyone. Schillinger is part of a group of Neo-Nazi's, who is a really tough Nazi, who makes all the "new meat" his dog in "Oz." Then you have Nino Schibetta (Tony Musante), who is a former-Mafia Don, who's basically in control of the entire drug trafficking, not to mention any and everything else that happens in Season One of "Oz." Along with Nino, there's his nephew Dino Ortolani (Jon Seda), who's just about as tough as anyone else in "Oz." As the stories progress, you can't help but be pulled into the world of these men, and not only can you see the hell; you're close to feeling it.

"Oz" is basically a soap opera for men. I absolutely loved Season One, but I haven't seen many episodes other than it. I've caught an episode here and there, but it was incoherent, because, when watching "Oz" you have to watch every single minute. In a ten-second time span, you could miss a murder; miss an important deal or something else. The DVD set isn't really worth the price - - not because of content, but rather episodes. They should release the sets as two seasons at a time (each season only has 8 episodes at an hour a piece) to save the fans money! A definite "must-have," but at this price, it's kind of a "when-I-can-afford-it" price.
