Emphasis on your. We all know there are noted and recognizable classics in the industry. I don't think I know a single child or adult that doesn't know the Mario level 1-1 song. While songs like the overworld for the original Zelda, One-winged Angel, or the Halo opening are surely great and deservedly popular, they just aren't always my personal favorites. So here is my personal list of favorite gaming tunes. Post your own favorites as well. Maybe there's a game you or I haven't played and therefore a killer song we haven't heard. I'm always excited to discover another great tune!

I found it difficult to compare old school beeps and boops to modern-day orchestrated soundtracks. These should almost be separate categories. Also, I think I could make my top 10 list almost exclusively off of the FFXIV soundtrack...but I won't. So many outstanding pieces of music in that game!

Some of these are just because they're absolute jams, others are because they were impactful of my time growing up gaming, most are both.

Mega Man 3 - Shadow Man
Move over Wily's Castle (MM2) and Bubble Man, this song is just too good.

Super Mario 64 - Dire Dire Docks
One of my favorite Mario songs. Water themed levels always seem to have great music.

Donkey Kong Country 2 - Stickerbrush Symphony
Until orchestrated tracks came along this may have been my number 1 video game song, it's still close.

Final Fantasy Tactics - Opening
Possibly the first game intro that had me sitting through the opening just to hear the music

Kingdom Hearts III - Opening (CHIKAI)
All apologies to Hikaru Utada, but there is something about the heavy violin replacing the lyrics that is just outstanding! Despite KH3s flaws, I couldn't load up my save without first sitting through the opening at least once. Perfectly emotional for the theme of the game.

Final Fantasy XIV - Close in the Distance
This might be the single greatest piece of music to come out of a video game ever. I can't speak highly enough about it. If you've played the game to it's epic conclusion, you know exactly how hard this song hits!

Might & Magic Darkside of Xeen - Lava Town / Necropolis
This song is a SoundBlaster jam! There was some kind of bug in this game that was never fixed where if you died and/or loaded your game repeatedly every once in awhile the music would not start. You could fix this by going into the settings and toggling the music off and back on. When you did that this was the song that would play until you moved to another area. As a kid I remember intentionally getting this bug to occur so that I could hear my jam before a tough dungeon or battle.

World of Warcraft - Legend of Azeroth Main Title
It's not that great of a track, but damn if I didn't listen to it for hundreds of hours on end. As an avid original WoW player, this is what you hear each time you start the game, cycle through character selection, etc. Not to mention when I would time out of the game busy doing other things, this song would echo through the house to let me know I had been logged out. Such a strong nostalgic song for me and my time as a borderline WoW addict.

Heroes of Might and Magic II (Expansion) - Necromancer Castle
In the expansion for Heroes II were alternate castle theme songs. The Necromancer castle was so damn good. Listen to that piano solo 50 seconds in! I grew up on this game and go back and play it often.

Castlevania Bloody Tears
An all time classic. It was the first song I learned on keyboard as well. The entire Simon's Quest soundtrack (all 5 songs or so!) is excellent!

Honorable mentions, or maybe in my top 10, I don't know:
Final Fantasy XIV - Endwalker Another intro I could sit and watch before logging in. Also, same as the WoW intro, when I time out of the game, this will start playing.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone Probably one of the most widely accepted classic tunes and for good reason. I just didn't grow up on Sonic and didn't have a Genesis until well into my teenage years when I bought a used one myself. So, Sonic and it's awesome soundtrack just doesn't have a strong nostalgic presence in my mind.

Final Fantasy VI - Terra's Theme and Chrono Trigger - Corridors of Time Two of my first and favorite RPGs as a kid. I can listen to these soundtracks on repeat. These are probably my favorite song from each game, but it's REAL close. While they don't make my favorite singular songs, they would definitely make my top 10 if I ranked entire game soundtracks.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night - Lost Paintings This and Tragic Prince are top notch. Another game that while doesn't have one of my top all time songs, it's probably a top 3 overall soundtrack for me.

Kirby's Adventure - Rainbow Resort Quite possibly the first song I ever heard from a video game that truly made me pay attention to how great a video game song could be. Kirby's Adventure is another game with a killer soundtrack.

Silent Hill 2 - Promise (Reprise) I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the awesome piano work woven all through the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack. Haunting, catchy, perfectly captures the mood and theme of the game.

I'm not sure I could rank these if I tried aside from FFXIV - Close in the Distance, it might be my new and forever number 1. Also, there is a lot of guilt for not having more FF songs on here...almost every FF battle/boss/Prelude music is worthy of a top 10 list. DKC, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania, and Mega Man all have additional great songs, but I wanted to keep my list varied and not take too many of the great ones!

Enjoy!

Yeah, you’re right! This is the version Devola sings by the fountain at the start of the game while the kids run around it. I remember just standing there listening to this for 10 mins. And then there the version with both Devola and Popola at the tavern. The OG Nier soundtrack is just so damn good!

I misunderstood your post until I read Heavyd814life's response.

I thought you were saying that around the time you were playing the game on your PS3, you saw a woman in real life singing this in a courtyard near a fountain. :D

I didn't even think it was strange that this happened to you. I simply envisioned the scene and thought, "pretty cool." 😅

The song returning home from Dutch's demise in RDR is also fire. Not as good as Mexico, but really good. I'm legitimately sad preparing for end game. My favorite video game story with a sad ending. Tears at your soul they offered hope, then ripped it away. Best R* game by far IMO.

I tried finding the song by looking through the soundtrack. Couldn't find it. Can you provide a link?

The hope is what really triggered me, I think. A normal, peaceful life. And then...

I still remember the entire sequence so vividly. I remember being so pissed lol. When I think of my favorite video game stories with a sad ending, RDR is definitely up there.

Is it still worth playing even with the sadness? I haven't played it. Heard good things about it though.

I had chills the first time beating it. While sad, it was perfect. The third act at least helped a bit with the sting.

I'm obviously biased, but I'd say so. I'd much rather replay RDR than RDR2.

Nobuo Uematsu, Other World - Final fantasy X. Still a banger.

Just happened to listen to this just now from an old random playlist on youtube I stumbled across from 17 years ago. FFX will be 23 years old in July.

Not the general style I expect to hear from his music.

Listen to these 15 songs of his from different FF games.

Other World is very different from FF music I'm used to hearing. But, to be fair, I also didn't play anything past VIII. So I don't know what Nobuo's style is in those games.

Interesting piece of knowledge: Nobuo Uematsu is self taught (so I heard)

A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned but if you are looking for something more recent the Octopath 2 soundtrack is incredible. Partitio, Agnea, and Hikari are some of my favorites - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a08239Plezw&list=P...

Also, Halo theme still causes goosebumps

Uematsu has a rock band. He might even have multiple. The Black Mages released hard rock / metal remixes of Final Fantasy songs (oddly enough, their version of Other World was lighter than the FFX original), and I believe he has another one now that doesn't overlap with his gaming career.

For a guy that manages to pop out songs from nearly every genre, Other World may actually be pretty close to his natural "voice."

I didn't expect that buildup. Gets pretty full/rich. Not quite sure what the right adjective is that I'm looking for to describe music that's full. Would you say 'rich' music?

One of my personal favorites is "Tower of Mystery" from Dragon Quest VIII: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xl8vhVS3YI&list=P...
"Beach" from Plok is also a cool, lesser-known good song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz0fAz9n_Os&pp=ygU...
The Shinobi III soundtrack is badass. This one is "Solitary:" https://youtu.be/2Ov10WvRyEE?list=PLv1tYJbe3vGMPSX...
I love the Sim City soundtrack. This is "Capital:" https://youtu.be/HJbMII1NUkg?list=PL1D6F1369CCAF15...

I always find it interesting seeing peoples list, and if they lean towards more a soft, fast-paced, or rock type genre. I find myself to be more in the low energy category. Soothing or relaxing would help define my taste. I could make a whole list dedicated to Final Fantasy, but here are my top 10:

1. Besaid Island - Final Fantasy X
2. Balamb Garden - Final Fantasy VIII
3. Wailers and Waterwheels - Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
4. Sultana Dreaming - Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn
5. Aquatic Ambience - Donkey Kong Country
6. Building Mode 1 - The Sims
7. Prelude - Final Fantasy XIV:A Realm reborn
8. Main Theme - Final Fantasy IV
9. One Fine Morning - Ni No Kuni
10. Giza Plans - Final Fantasy XII

FF7: Rebirth has a few songs growing on me, so I'll probably see them on here soon. One song that goes up and down on my list, but could certainly be here, is Dearly Beloved from the original Kingdom Hearts. Really, just a great piece to have in the background.

FFIV main theme is a great one. Have heard it many times.

I know it get's some flak for not being a typical FF, but I loved Revenant Wings! I kind of wish more Final Fantasy's would spin off like that.

I'm glad this topic is making a resurgence. Time to catch up.

Just to clarify, Otherworld was composed by Nobuo and sung by Bill Muir. https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Bill_Muir
Back when FFX came out, Otherworld was probably the first video game song I scoured the internet for a download of, and then added it to my metal playlist on Winamp. It fit in much better in my metalhead era than on my video game playlist. Otherworld doesn't hit for me quite as much as it once did...but I likely overplayed it back then too. Muir's vocals are only so-so for me.

@Chocobo
Nice picks from the FF library. XIV just has so much well-orchestrated music.
Balamb Garden from VIII is obviously notable, I think I'm partial to Blue Fields.

My top six gaming OSTs altogether are:
0. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I don't wanna put it at #1, since most of its 1000+ songs are pulled from other games. But the tunes in this game are so varied and brilliant, regardless of their sources.
1. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Nintendo Wii U Nintendo Switch . Absolutely incredible music by legendary composer David Wise.
2. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Nintendo Wii U . This game's entire legacy is the music that people hear in YouTube videos (though it deserves much better).
3. Rhythm Heaven Fever Nintendo Wii . It is just so darn catchy, and the in-game utterances make it even better. It even has six songs by the famous Japanese band, Tsunku. They're a serious bop.
4 and 5. Either Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest Super Nintendo or Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards Nintendo 64 . They're both stuffed to the gills with bangers, both upbeat and emotional. Either one could top the other on any given day.
6. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Super Nintendo . Bouncy and whimsical tunes by Yoko Shimomura. These songs are all gems. In fact, one of them is so famous that the aforementioned Kirby and the Rainbow Curse seems to make a random homage to it:

DKC2 is all around iconic, but that music is otherworldly. Still blows my mind that these were created close to 30 years ago.

@Chocobo

I agree. I really enjoyed Revenant Wings. I thoroughly played it. Every mission, experimented heavily with crafting, got everyone to lvl 99, etc.

I even 100%ed the game.

Not only that, I many many MANY times played that stage Well of Whispered Oaths, where if you beat the whole thing, including the final boss there (Yiazmat), the weapon Anastasia gets an upgrade. Each playthrough can take over an hour. I replayed it many times, with the goal of seeing how strong the weapon Anastasia can get. You can imagine how long that took.

It caps at 999 for each stat.

I would say that game was somewhat of a hidden gem. Strangely addicting.

Although the gameplay of Donkey Kong games doesn't seem to do it for me, there's a lot of incredible music in the series. Makes me want to play Tropical Freeze just to experience the music along the way.

In no particular order...

The Extreme: Final Fantasy VIII
A fine battle theme, especially when paired with the other two parts (Maybe I'm a Lion and Legendary Beast)

ANYTHING from Legend of Dragoon OST:
Notable mentions from here if you want individual tracks: Rose's Theme, Shrine of Shirley's Theme (so fking relaxing, this one), and the Queen Fury's music + Tiberoa map theme. Personal favorite: Meru's Theme (so energetic and perky!)

ANYTHING from the Chrono Cross OST:
Notable mentions: Another World overworld theme, Termina theme, Opening Theme (Scars of Time), and Marblue's theme.

Great suggestions. Just listened to most of those. The Extreme from FF VIII is very good. The way it builds on itself/progression is impressive.

Those Dragoon pieces though... Amazing. Queen Fury is great. But something about the Tiberoa map theme... Woah. It just hits me in a certain way.

A comment from that piece led me to this one, kinda has some similar elements to Tiberoa:

Chrono Cross has a great soundtrack. I used to put it on many days during work in the background. When it finished, I knew that over 3 hours were done :D

I must listen to the Legend of Dragoon soundtrack. Where has it been all this time?!

I wish I learned music composition. People who can make music like this... I don't quite know what to say. It's an impressive skill.

My brain still conflates these two themes (they even came out around the same time, lol)

Deningrad Theme

and

Goldenrod City Theme

...and I don't know how to write/make music either.

@Oduomega

I can see why. Those two themes do have some similarities. I was listening to Deningrad and started thinking of Goldenrod City.

And they both came out in 2000!

Yes, my speaking about XIV, and then quickly to VIII was meant to be two separate thoughts. Blue Fields is from VIII.

To further jumble up XIV and VIII. @Oduomega mentioned The Extreme...great song that I somehow forget about too often.
Well, they redid it for XIV. I don't know that this version is better, but like most of the music in XIV, it is more orchestrated.

Now I'm going to spend my work day listening to the Chrono Cross and Legend of Dragoon soundtracks...

Oh, I see. But I wasn't trying to correct you, not at all.

When you mentioned Blue Fields and XVI, although I had known that piece from VIII, I had found a video on YouTube with the title 'blue fields," and with what I thought said XVI in the picture (I read it quickly and misread the picture as saying XVI. I mistook the line symbol as the letter i). It was a surprise to me that a game other than VIII had the theme in it.
