As some of you may know, I've been on and off working on my YouTube channel GameFrank. Recently, I've been wanting to get back into it, and try to create content at a more regular pace. I figured I'd create a topic, not only to share/post my videos, but also to get some feedback on what you like/don't like about my content, and what I can do to make it higher quality entertainment.
Current Topics of Discussion: What changes can I make to the channel to help improve the quality and entertainment value? Do you have any game suggestions/topic suggestions for future videos? What type of content would you like to see on the channel? Should swear words be left uncensored?
Help Wanted:
I am looking for someone to help me with the brand a bit. I’d like to get a standardized logo, background, and a few video intros/outros made.
Please watch the actual videos from YouTube.com if you can, as that helps with my stats vs watching through the forum. Any views, either way, are appreciated!
I LOVE the little funny things you do on Instagram stories. So good. So sarcastic. I love it.
For lengthier Youtube stuff, I'd suggest maybe either getting a better mic that plugs into your camera, or get something like a Zoom H1N ($100) and sync the audio afterwards in post. It will sound so much better.
What are you using to record these? iPhone? You can get a little Lavalier mic that plugs into an iPhone and it does a great job.
As for content - show/tell us about your favorite games. Show/tell us about the games that have been the hardest to obtain. etc.
Which tune was playing in the background before you turned on the Game & Watch? Couldn't identify it.
You mentioned Game & Watch Gallery. Wow. Havent heard those titles in awhile. Those games bring me back. One of my favorite minigames in that series was in Game & Watch Gallery 3, where you play as Yoshi and you eat cookies, but you had to avoid eating Bob ombs.
You could also unlock the game Flagman. Used to play that too, see how far I could get.
@Sid_Ceaser Thanks man! I've been so behind with my Instagram lately.
Was the audio in that video bad? I actually used one of my Blue Yeti microphones, recorded that separately on a netbook, and sync the audio while editing, maybe the fact I forgot to clear up background noise in audacity before exporting the audio as a WAV?
I actually used my old DSLR, a Nikon D5100. I think for future videos, I'd like to use my phone. I currently have a Galaxy S10e, which records video in 4K. Not the best phone camera on the market, but still very good!
Thanks for the suggestions! I'm trying to figure out the best layout for videos like that.
@Bleed_DukeBlue haha thanks man. I considered bleeping out the "fudge" in this latest video, but ultimately decided to just leave it in. Maybe I'll go back to editing out swear words.
@nonamesleft I used a chiptune midi remix of the Oil Panic theme from Game & Watch Gallery. I tried keeping all the music in-line with the content of the video!
Man I absolutely love the Game & Watch Gallery series. I've been wanting to make a video on them. I had them all as a kid, and believe I still own them to this day. I even have those two Club Nintendo exclusive Game & Watch DS games. I just love the Game & Watch overall. I currently only own the 3 shown in the video, a still unopened Game & Watch Ball from Club Nintendo, and a few of the Nintendo Mini Classics keychains. I'd love to own more of them some day!
Thanks for the feedback guys! Feel free to post on the video too. Every like and comment helps. Especially starting out
> I don't tend to watch videos with lots of swearing. Just not my thing. So I may
> not be your target audience
Not sure why you were negged, I appreciate the input.
I naturally swear sometimes, but I'm not talking super vulgar or anything. My latest video I'm finishing up right now actually didn't need any censoring
@citizen_zane thanks man, I appreciate it! You also reminded me I forgot to share it in here. Any likes, comments, and feedback is always appreciated as always!

I regret not buying it for a buck back when I was working at a resale shop. We got it in constantly, and employee price would have only been a buck. I totally should have stocked up on cheap 64 games.
@nonamesleft thank you bud! I appreciate the feedback
I made a video yesterday to upload today. It doesn't go live on YouTube until noon, but I'll post the link now. Maybe the video will work ahead of time
If you found some really odd things that we may not have heard about, totally interested in that. I'm not all that interested in the find, more so the uniqueness of the object. If you've just got a list of video games that I've most likely heard about, I'll pass.

I think I've got a decent list with some variety. I'm happy to share a rough script, or a list of the items featured if you guys want to check it out. Maybe tell me if it'll even be worth producing
YES!!! So far so good man! I am liking your vids so far. Obviously, these aren't DigitalFoundry levels yet, but I think they are a great launching point.
The editing looks really good, and I can definitely tell you spent time doing the WRITING for your videos...which is maybe one of the most important parts. I'm not super into the unboxings, mostly because those are often off-the-cuff...and can be quite difficult to make look/sound more professional.
When I look at early videos from other Youtubers (both famous and not), I'd say yours hang in there quite well

Thanks bud! I'm also working with 9 year old editing software, so I am limited to some degree. Hopefully, if I can start monetizing or making money off my content, I can afford to purchase an Adobe Cloub subscription.
I appreciate you mentioning the writing as well, I think it's often one of the most overlooked parts of videos. I've noticed a lot of big-time YouTubers with not-so-great writing. That's probably due to them paying others to write scripts, but I digress.
I have a new video premiering tomorrow at 3:30 PM EST. It's not the greatest IMO, but the site I worked with was ecstatic about how it turned out. Guess that's the important part
My three favorite racing games are still (SNES and Genesis Rock N Roll Racing), RC Pro AM for NES, of course Outrun but only the arcade version with the wheel and pedals. I was never a Mario racing fan but I only played it once at the arcade over 20 years ago. There are some other lesser known Genesis ones that are okay as well. I always thought overall Genesis was the best system for shooters (mainly Renovation titles) and racing games while SNES was always the best for RPG's even though I got started with Phantasy Star for SMS.
And if you want to talk about cheap games you just had to a buy at Toys R Us and Target. 1998/1999 the end of 98 all Saturn games were $20 and Target had all the best clearance games. If you bought 75% of the PS1 rpgs for $2.97 to $9.98 on clearance prior to the year 2001 at Target such as (Lunar 1 & 2, Valkyrie Profile, Arc the Lad and so many more). So many great games for that system so cheap. Also within 2 weeks of release Target had all the Dreamcast games on clearance for $1'49 to $5.96 here in Illinois and I passed on so much. You could walk in with a hundred dollars and have about 35 to 40 different games for DC.. Sadly so many of the greatest regrets I have are with how much money I could have had and how many great games I could still have today if I just had invested in my favorite hobby.
Good job Frank. It’s exciting to watch your videos. The hook is your presentation/delivery. I have zero interest in ghost runner but I watched until the end, simply because you do a great job pulling me in.
Gotta be honest Frank, that VOICE...it's so soooooothing and pleasant It really sounds similar to the way my favorit Youtubers speak. Calm, slow, distinguished. Reminds me alot of the old Gametrailers review guy that everyone loved!
Your latest video is a huge improvement and I liked it! If you really hit on some content that people love (sorry, but I can't help but feel like it can't be all that YOU love)...I can see it taking off.
Maybe some Pokemon, Fortnite, COD, etc once in a while just to get some numbers up maybe?

I appreciate the kind words man! I've always hated my voice, so it's nice to hear that others disagree.
Have any suggestions on videos you think would be more popular?
My top 5 series I've been slowly working on in the background might be a good way to stretch my reach. I could easily incorporate some popular topics onto that show.

HA!! We all hate our own voices I think.
Hmmm... recommendations. I think just anything that is a hot topic - Grand Theft Auto (Trilogy is coming out), Halo, Pokemon, Mario, new hardware (Switch Oled)...I would hate to tell you to succumb to the masses/sheep of people who drool over everything pop culture - but yeah, if it means subs I suppose it's worth considering?
I am currently working on finalizing a script for a GOTY video to hopefully get made next week.
Any specific topics you guys would like me to cover? I'm still trying to get a footing for my style of video. I think I want to go more "out there" like Jon Tron. Obviously, it needs to be my own unique weirdness, but that's the format I'm leaning towards.
Well, I got a really late start on production, but I have the video about 70% complete. Still needs a lot of work, but I'm hoping to finish it up and release it Monday the 31st.
The topic is my top 5 games of 2021. Any guesses on what they are?
I really appreciate your video. Since I had already played Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U, I didn't give any thought about it on the Switch and I knew absolutely nothing about Bowser's Fury, but after watching your video, I want to play it so bad! If Bowser's Fury every gets released on it's own, I'll snatch it up in a heartbeat.

haha that suit of armor is so small, I have yet to wear it again. I just thought it'd be a cool nod to an older video, if I used that image for that little sketch.
@SwiftJAB Thanks man!
MrBean wrote:

I was given a free review code to write my review, and I enjoyed it enough to seek out a physical version. I highly recommend it

Thanks buddy, glad you learned something! Yeah, I'm dumb and purchased it for $50, but if you can find it on sale for $40 or less, I'd say definitely pick it up. 3D World is actually fun on the Switch, and Bowser's Fury is like a really really good tease for a potential future full Mario title.
Thanks everyone who checked it out. Remember, interactions with the video really help me publicise the channel more. I'm still trying to learn the YT algorithm so I can get more hits on my content. My goal is to push at least 1K views on new videos, by the end of the year.
I made a Steam group as well. Plan to use it as a curator down the road. Anyone on Steam, please consider joining my group
This is great, my only feedback is you are a little late to the game. If you are looking for more views and what not it’s gonna be hard posting that subject right now. Otherwise good stuff :)

Yeah, unfortunately, I really don't get early access to stuff. Most of the time, early builds and early review copies are designated to those working for large outlets like IGN or GameSpot. I literally started this Pokemon video the day I finished the main story.
My next video (or at least one of the upcoming ones) is going to be on Horizon Forbidden West. Yeah I'm going to be late to the party, since everyone is releasing their content NOW, and I am only about an hour or so into the actual game.
This is an issue I, unfortunately, have no control over. I COULD release some content for Horizon early, but it won't be polished, won't be accurate, and it'll come across as a rush job. To make quality content it takes time. Something companies unfortunately don't give small-time content creators.
For example, Sony Europe actually sent me my review copy for Horizon. Only issue, I received it 12 hours before the official US launch. Definitely not enough time to have content ready to release, during the zeitgeist of the game.
@Frank This may be strange advice but while watching Corridor Crew, in one of their videos they talk about how making something just a little "off" about a human face in a video's thumbnail subconsciously draws viewers to them. If you were to whip your face in the thumbnails and enlarge your eyes just a little bit, for example, some folks are bound to watch the video to see if that's what your face really looks like or what. That gets em in, the content will hook em.
I use eyes as an example because of, say, Screen Rant's "Pitch Meeting" videos - all the thumbnails have weirdly large eyes, but the Corridor folks talk about how just exaggerating any common facial feature just slightly can potentially help draw views when folks are scrolling through thumbnails of similar topics.
I dunno if that made sense but figured I'd throw it out there. Wonderful vids as always.
@theJaw I actually experimented around with enlarging my eyes for that Pokemon Thumbnail, but I couldn't figure out a way to get it to look right. I'm pretty lousy at making thumbnails. Something I need to either improve on, or outsource to someone else

Disney Party and Pac-Man fever were some Mario Party clones that I used to play. The Pac-Man one wasn't too bad, but the Disney one was a bit worse as I recall.
For Mario Kart clones, Look no further than the Nintendo 64. For a good one, I would recommend the Mickey Speedway USA or whatever it was called. There was also a South Park kart racing game that was pretty bad. Hell, you could probably do a video solely on Mario kart clones on the 64. It seems like there were many of them.
One of my favorite kart racing games that wasn't Mario is probably the Little Big Planet one. It was quite good!
@theJaw Thanks man! Just takes more practice with Premiere. Things are coming back to me more and more with each video.
@loztdogs Burger Time Party is fun. The visuals and overall mobile game aesthetics were offputting, but the gameplay is solid. If you want more info, I actually wrote a review on it back in 2019.
> @Frank How did you get the border of your video to be a zoomed in version of the

I'm glad you noticed. It was a bit of extra work, as I had to manually do it by hand for each clip, as each piece of footage varied in resolution. So I couldn't just copy over the effects.
I'm currently looking to upgrade my camera. I need to raise about $400. If anyone wants something from my trade thread please let me know.
I'm really pushing my channel and going to keep trying for consistency. I really enjoy making them, and even more-so enjoy hearing peoples opinions on the video and content within.
I like version 1 better. To me, version 1 looks like the pictures were taken in sunlight, while version 2 looks very shadowy. Look at the leftmost Mario in version 2. Doesn't he look almost a bit spooky? And #3 Mario looks a little strange in version 2, while in version 1 he just looks like he's in sunlight.

Awesome, hope it's not overhyped
I have the next few videos planned as well. One is going to be an accessory review, one is a Halloween special, and I'm still teetering on which to produce among a few candidates.
This episode of Frank’s Five focuses on five of the weirder Mario games and the obscurities within them. If you like what you see, please make sure to like, comment, and subscribe to the channel. I greatly appreciate the support!

Thank you buddy!
I wanted a balance of more contemporary and the outlandish. I'll probably revisit this topic someday. Hotel Mario needs to be discussed! I guess I'm waiting to acquire a copy some day
"I think I might be having an existential crisis"... Haha that face. This is definitely your best to date. Super fun and creative. Yet, where is Hotel Mario?
Awesome video yet again @Frank! How do we get you more visibility? You're videos are great and need to be seen by more.

Thanks buddy. Hotel Mario is reserved for a part 2 some day
I know man, the low view count keeps getting to me more than it should. I advertise on some Discord servers but that's pretty much it. Reddit is a great place to advertise, but from what I've read, it has to be others sharing your content. Self promotion is frowned upon on most of the subreddits.
I've been struggling to figure out ways to get my channel some more publicity. Main reason my videos take so long I between is because I get discouraged.
If anyone's able to help or has suggestions, it would mean a lot!
What about doing smaller versions on Tiktok? Things like your GTA Mario clip would definitely gain attention. Possibly hash tag the crap out of Instagram and Twitter? All you need is a couple random people with a following to like your stuff. Can't hurt to message some of the bigger names out there in the gaming space and ask for a shutout if they like ya?

The issue with TikTok is it's very distanced from YouTube. Using TikTok as a means to promote the YouTube channel likely wouldn't pan out.
At best, I'd gain TikTok followers, which I'm not at all interested in. I think TikToks are cheap and low quality
I wish I knew someone who was into marketing who could point me in the right direction. I'm considering taking Google's online marketing course, literally to help me gain some traction.
I love making the content I do, but it gets incredibly disheartening to get very little reception, and then I see these 15-year-olds speaking into a camera with no edits and they get thousands of views.
I have a work buddy who's doing a wellness podcast. He started gaining a lot more momentum by publishing shorts on TikTok and referencing full episodes on YT. Appears to be helping so far.
Thank you guys very much. I always appreciate your feedback and support!
@nonamesleft yeah. The director's dream was always to make a Mario game and get to work with Miyamoto. So when he was called out during a live conference, he started balling up.
Awesome job @Frank as usual. I didn’t know this game existed, I’m intrigued.
Are the depth of field issues bad? I’ve been dealing with that in super lucky’s tale now (which is super painful) and I don’t know if I can handle that right now.
@loztdogs The depth of field issues aren't horrible, but they aren't great. I only experienced it a few times though, so it's definitely not a deal breaker.
@MrBean You absolutely should! I bet your kid will enjoy it.
Thanks guys! This might be the last review for a while.
The video is set to go live tomorrow at noon. I figured "GameFrank Friday" would come early this week. Worked really hard on this one, so hopefully, you guys enjoy it!
I'll try to remember to post the link in a new post, but I did add it to the OP. Won't be viewable until 12:00 though.
Awesome video as usual dude. Definitely continuing to get better and better as you go!
- Hey now, as a kid, I hated Candy Corn ... but for some reason, I kinda like it now! haha - Man, I forgot about Friday the 13th, watching this brought back some memories. - I definitely need to scratch a L4D2 itch ... played the hell out of that game. Sadly, I gave up B4B as at the time, there was barely anyone playing. Unsure if it's still a dead community or not. - Nice TPX, I have a green one just like that from baseball in the mid 90's! - Mr. X & Kool-Aid ? F'ing genius, haha!
@theJaw Thanks buddy, I think I'm starting to feel more natural in-front of the camera and behind the mic as well. Also noticed you commented on the video, thank you for that. YouTube analytics love comments almost as much as I do
@MrBean I would absolutely be down to play some Back 4 Blood with you! I've been playing it on/off since launch. I jump back in when the expansions drop.
I liked candy corn as a kid, until the waxy texture and dull flavor made me wake up
I'm sad I got rid of my CIB Friday The 13th NES a couple of years ago... something cool I just need to get over I will probably never end up owning again.
Also, yes we are definitely overdue!
@loztdogs I really appreciate that! I'm hoping as I keep improving in my content, the channel grows.
@nonamesleft That poltergust was the most ghetto prop I think I've ever put together, but the end result was almost exactly as invisioned it. The actual skit was planned to be longer and higher production, but time constraints and budget forced me to hang a Pac-Man ghost
That S22e part was a little jab at Samsung. I've been using their phones for over 10 years and love them, but sometimes they release poop. I had one economy phone that had a terrible battery, and another that flat-out died. S22 is their current phone, so to go along with the battery dying, I called it the Poltergust S22e. It was a last minute idea, but since it was a Samsung vacuum I couldn't resist!
That gameplay was also taken from Super Mario Galaxy 2
@MrBean haha my friends from the UK are going to give me SO much crap for my pronunciation of Jaguar Ja-Gwrr just sounds weird to me... and NO It's Ma-ree-oh, although I bet sometimes it sounds like MAHH-Reoh Yeah that Atari Paddle doesn't come all the way around, it has a stopping point on both sides. I honestly didn't realize it either until I was researching for the video.
@theJaw In my defense, I'm a millennial, and most don't even know what Atari is. That said I do feel shame whenever I mispronounce anything on video... except Pokemon. I'll intentionally do that to stir up the fans I definitely do recommend it. I'm considering buying a physical steelbook edition myself, just for collection purposes. This is honestly the most well-done compilation to date.
"Mah-rio" for sure the high A "m-Aaaar-io" always drove me crazy but unsure if there was ever an official way to say it.
Jagwire is definitely wrong, I think? JagWar is what I've always known (once owned a Jag car in my early 20s that I barely fit in!). At least go with "Yagwar", you'd make your Brit friends happy being all Austin Powers like.
Regardless man, video was great. We gotta get you more visibility!
Lol @Frank also a millennial here so there is NO EXCUSE. But also I’m just joking haha, I enjoy the mispronunciation. Pls make that a running gag anytime you need to talk about the ol’ Jagwire.
I actually still have mine in storage. I should prob drag that thing out sometime soon.
The reception on my latest video has been pretty great! With that said, it's got me contemplating certain aspects of my channel.
I'm considering putting Frank's Five on Hiatus. I know the YouTube algorithm praises longer videos, yet my 6-and-a-half-minute video has performed better than any so far.
Granted I had the benefit of being the first video review uploaded, but I'm just wondering if my Frank's Five concept has run its course?
I've got some ideas for the next video, but I'm conflicted on if I should continue with the series I started in January, or just make your typical YouTubey videos.
Hey @Frank! Thanks for showcasing Kena: Bridge of Spirits in one of your top 5. I finished it last night on the Steam Deck and enjoyed it overall. The art style and gameplay felt like what God of War might be like if we're made by Pixar (minus the QTEs). While some of the battles felt very repetitive, overall it was a fun playthrough.
I felt like I missed some component of the combat as there were some kill X number of enemy challenges that seemed impossible to complete within the amount of time given. Maybe I had to have a specific charm that I had not yet found to give me the appropriate boost? Who knows.
I hope they make a sequel. I feel like there is a lot more to Kena's character than what this first entry gives us. There's also a ton of possibilities with the whole spirit world concept.
As always @Frank, fantastic work! I was really waiting for some kind of joke/payoff about the kidnapper/kidnappee reuinion (woulda been a great clip from Kimmy Schmidt!).
Your knowledge on the matter is incredibly impressive, how much of this was known vs. researched?
Love the predictions, they all feel pretty realistic. Would love to see Diddy and adding flight!
Also, odd that I am subscribed, with notification ... but never got notified on this new video.

Hey thank you buddy, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I was planning a skit for that kidnapper section, as well as for the Diddy Kong bit, but time constraints and lack of a solid idea ended up causing me to scrap those ideas. I also ended up cutting out random facts...
Most of the info in this video was off hand knowledge, that's why I may get an occasional thing wrong. (apparently I mixed up DKJR as being the modern day DK). If it's a topic I don't have much knowledge on, I won't cover it. I try to focus my content on things I am actually knowledgeable on, and have a history with. There's plenty of other YouTubers who just relay Google searches
As for the notification thing... Maybe try turning notifications off, then back on? Might help to do it from a mobile phone vs PC, or vice verse.
> Damnit Frank... Didn't know that existed! Sold out =/ Thanks for making me want to
> go pay ebay prices! Think it's worth it?
It was only $8 more than "Power Up Edition" 4K, which is what they're just calling all of the standard releases. I am a bit miffed that they didn't include a regular case, meaning this will forever be detached from my actual movies.
It was worth the $8 upcharge, but an extra $20? No, not at all.
I prefer the one on the left. To me "viewfinder" on the left stands out more than the one on the right. The one on the right seems muted compared to the left. Though I do like the black lettering.
I agree, the white looks better. I threw a picture of myself in the blank space to the right and called it a night. The video is scheduled to go live at 10am Friday.
There will also be a more in depth written review companion piece.
> I think you have a good voice for videos. Something about it.
I think another reason they went with the name Cait was because it had AI in the name. Since Cait was an artificial intelligence within the digital world, it makes sense.
@Frank - yet again, great video! I was really hoping for a third slowmo close up ... haha
Never heard of this before and you totally sold me. $80 for lifetime pass (so as long as they don't shut down) feels worth it - as I have to assume if this gains popularity, they'll raise the price.
This is a great little collection to play with the kids more than anything.

Haha thanks bud. I didn't want to overdo that slowmo joke. I think 2 was the right number if "noooo"
Yeah I'm a little bummed that I was only given a 12 Month code for review purposes, but as long as they continue to support it, I might buy a lifetime when this lapses.
I'm gonna be honest, I'm surprised Antstream is still around. I remember hearing about it during the Kickstarter and I went "This will not last long." 30 bucks for a year isn't bad, I guess.
And the whole "different accounts on PC / Xbox" thing sucks.
