I had a similar situation. My daughter and I sat next to an elderly man on a plane once. You would have thought that my earphones and the fact that I was looking at a screen would have been enough of an indicator that I was occupied, but that didn't stop him from initiating conversation on more than one occasion. Much like you, I finally relented. At one point, he asked us to pray with him, which we did out of respect for the nice old guy.
