Why'd he freak out about the GameCube controller. Design isn't that strange, is it? I guess in comparison to the previous controllers it's different (nevermind the N64 alien hands controller - idk what to make of that one. I don't know if any of us really do)

Pretty much the things he said, looks like a boomerang, and the buttons are all different shapes. I would also add that the c-stick nub is garbage, and the shoulder buttons kind of suck.

Overall, I think the GC remote is one of my favorites. I even bought a replica USB one to use.

I have to say I like all the different shapes of various consoles. If they all were just carbon copies it would be boring. The saturn controller, Dreamcast, N64, Gamecube, all cool controllers. Heck I think the PSVR Sense controllers look really sleek and can't wait to have those crazy circles around my hands!

Started up Bayonetta 2 on Switch last night. The game seems to be more of the same as the first one, which I found a bit dull from a gameplay perspective. I feel like I've outgrown button mashers. I still have DmC and DMC5 on the backlog. Dropping the difficulty to easy just so I can play through for the story so I can play 3 eventually.

Saturn 3d pad is my favorite of the old school console controllers.

The only controller I really had a problem with was the Wiimote, mainly because fudge motion controls in a big bad way.

That reminds me of a quote by Miyamoto all the way back in 2002.
"Get accustomed to the GCN Controller because, 10 years from now, this controller will be the standard."

Then they pretty much went in a very different direction for each console that followed it (yes I know there's a few exceptions where you can use a GameCube controller on select Wii/WiiU/Switch titles but you have to go out of your way and buy some adapter or something). They're the only ones that don't just stick to one basic design and and improve it with each new console, they need to reinvent the wheel every time.

Back in the day I really liked the GameCube controller, but I don't know how I'd feel about it these days, I haven't held one in a long time. I do remember liking the analog L&R buttons, especially in racing games that used them for gas/brake and still feel it's a major step backwards on each of their controllers post-GameCube to not have analog triggers. I wish the Z button was bigger and that there were two of them. I remember not having an issue with the C-Stick/nub early on, but several years later I grew to dislike it after I had started playing more and more games on PS2 and Xbox. Props to WaveBird for being the first wireless controller that didn't feel like a cheap piece of crap, even if it did have a silly name.

I just got an email from Best Buy that my 8BitDo Pro 2 is ready for pickup. Got it to use with my Switch and I’m looking forward to seeing what 8BitDo controllers are all about.

Heh - I never heard that one before. Kinda funny since the only thing it had going for it (analog triggers) was abandoned on all their future systems, while their competitors more fully embraced them (to the point where the analog triggers are the ps5 controllers biggest selling point)

As a big fan of racing games, that has always and still does strike me as a bonehead decision.

Excellent summary of my opinions.

I remember playing GC for the first time at a pre-launch event. It was an amazing controller for a first impression. The goofy button design was actually a clever way to lower the learning curve. You instantly knew what button to hit to perform the main and secondary actions on most games.

So far I like the controller. It’s not as nice as the official Pro controller but it’s definitely nice. Solid feeling and good button response. I doubt I’ll mess with the button mapping, macros, or any other customization, but it’s cool to know I can of I want to. To me a big plus is that the D pad is high and on the left, makes it better for old school 2D scrollers IMO. I’d say $50 well spent.

Thanks.

Interesting to know about the D pad, because even in games that use the Switch's left stick for movement, I've found that I often use the D pad instead. So an improvement to that area is a plus.

Can't remember if I mentioned this before, but the Switch has slots to save custom button mapping. I created one for Goldeneye that makes the controls modern, and it's nice to be able to save them so I don't have to remember what I swapped.

This is a great feature I had no idea was added. I think one of the collections of an NES series had the buttons backwards.

I knew the remap feature was added but didn't know it had multiple save slots for it, I thought whatever buttons you remapped would stay like that across all games until you changed them back. This is good to know.

Been playing a bunch of the old 2D Mario games simultaneously for some reason, and I was wondering:

Does anyone here hold Super Mario Bros 2 above the more traditional Mario games?

I by no means dislike SMB2, but I'm realizing with these play throughs that I've never ever gotten too far into it. I always find myself just wanting to whip on SMB3 or SMW, or even SMB1. It being a reskin of Doki Doki Panic is just so jarring compared to the rest of the series (even if I obviously didn't know that it was as a kid, first playing it). So yah, I was just wondering if any folks actually hold it in higher regards than the rest of the series or if others feel similar to me. I reiterate: what small amount of the game I've played is real good, but when I want to play classic Mario, it's always the last on my list (will take it over "New" Super Mario Bros any day of the week though).

I wouldn't say it's the best NES Mario, but it's my personal favorite. I love being able to select 4 different characters each with a unique skill set. The areas are so unique thanks to it not being a Mario game originally, and the boss/sub boss fights are better than any of the other early Mario's imo. I also like being able to ride and pick up enemies, leading to some great secret areas and not so secret areas. The warps are there, as are optional sub areas leading to a bit of exploration. Love being able to back track and explore. Sinking sand leading to short cuts. Verticle scrolling stages.
Being one of the few Mario's that buck the trend of save the helpless princess. Lastly it is one of my favorite endings of all video games. From tracking the character use count, to the enemy scroll (and errors), to the final screen with that music. Love the game's music. Love everything about the game. I've beaten it in so many different ways.

I'm so glad we got Doki Doki Panic as Mario 2 instead of "Lost Levels". As a young child, Japan Mario 2 wouldn't have been as exciting. It was a clone of Mario 1 made for people looking for a greater challenge. Mario 2 (USA) was new and refreshing. And when Mario 3 hit, it made the "traditional" formula new and exciting again.

It does to a degree. Everytime you boot up they ask you to revert to defaults, but having (6 save slots I think, maybe 4? Each controller takes a slot so more like 3 or 2.) You have to go default to play normal then select the remap slot to go back.

I've always liked SMB2 and have great memories/nostalgia from playing it in my childhood. But yeah, I'd rather play SMB3 or SMW any day. I do like a lot of things about it, pretty much everything @KCPenguins said, but I still prefer the others.

Hmm maybe I’ll have to prioritize a true play through for SMB2 now. I do want to finally beat it after only playing a few levels since I was a kid.

I’m so thankful I can play these games on Switch. On that note, GB/C/A on the Switch is a game changer too. I’ve been playing the hell out of them since they dropped. That’s where I’m playing SMB3 and I’m happy to find out that they included e-reader levels that I never even knew about in the game.

I'm really loving how much of Nintendo's overall catalog is available on the Switch, playable both in handheld mode and on the tv. Hopefully all of these old games will be available on the Switch's successor as well.

If they release Super Mario Advanced (SMB2 on GBA) before you give SMB2 another go, I'd recommend playing the NES one first, or the All Stars version second.
