I have my original three, didn't even know about the Trilogy until I dunno, 8-10 years ago? I picked it up, near new condition, for like $80? Was quite happy about it. Had no clue that was a thing ....
Safe to assume, that MP will just get a basic facelift. It's Nintendo, can't get our hopes up.

1 - no idea. If you are talking a couple years or so down the line, probably not - just look at Mario 3D All Stars. If you are talking 20-30 years down the line, sure it will probably be expensive, it's a Nintendo game.
2 - it was Activision, not Sony, but nevertheless I'm not a fan of the $40 price on Metroid. That being said, I'd imagine the Metroid Prime games are a fair bit bigger than the crash games. If you don't think it's fair, let Nintendo know by not buying it at that price.

* 9-Feb-2023(#19)Pikmin 4, Kirby, Zelda, Advance Wars for sure, the Disney Game surprised me and looks to hit the spot.
Not a Metroid Prime Fan BUT that game looked like WAY more effort was put into it. It’s worth $40. Anyone who doesn’t agree can just bust out their Wii or GC very simple.
Scott
9-Feb-2023(#22)Didn't have time to type up my thoughts yesterday, but the Direct was great! Easily my favorite one in a while. These were the highlights, IMO:
Pikmin 4
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC
Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania
Bayonetta Origin
Splatoon 3 expansion
Octopath Traveler II
Sea of Stars
Advance Wars 1 + 2
Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe
Game Boy / Game Boy Color games
Game Boy Advance games
Metroid Prime remaster
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe wave 4
Tears of the Kingdom
Dead Cells has been on my to play list for a while. I'm definitely going to have to get around to that now, because that Castlevania DLC looks awesome!
I'm glad the Splatoon 3 expansion was confirmed, but I wish they had given us more info. Wave 1 is basically nothing as far as I'm concerned, it just changes the hub back to the city from the first game. I want to know what actual content is being added in Wave 2, and when it's coming.
I'm so excited for Sea of Stars! Glad we finally have a release date for that.
I've been looking forward to Advance Wars ever since I played SteamWorld Heist, so I'm glad that one is finally coming out.
Game Boy games! They're getting closer and closer to just having their entire catalog available on the Switch!
It's about time they finally confirmed the Metroid Prime remaster. It's disappointing that we're not getting the whole trilogy all at once like on the Wii. But, at least they're only charging $40 and not $60 for it. I'll wait until I can get it for $25-30. I don't have much experience with the game, only tried it once. Does this remaster look like much of an improvement? Some of the shots looked really good, others looked like a GC game lol.
We knew Wave 4 was coming, so no big surprise there. I'm glad we're getting another brand new track, but more importantly, a new character! I didn't expect new characters in any of these waves. Birdo has been requested for a long time, that was a good one to add.
While I enjoyed the Tears of the Kingdom trailer, they still didn't show that much! I want to see some actual gameplay and get some concrete info about what's new in this game. I'll admit, when it first ended, I was very disappointed, and felt more than ever that it was going to just be BotW 2.0 (or 1.5). But after re-watching it a couple times and reading Reddit comments pointing out things they spotted, I'm actually pretty excited. I'm starting to have more hope that this game is going to be a huge improvement over BotW!

Your excitement is my fear. I want BotW 2.0 just like I wanted Zelda 2.0 and OoT 2.0. Instead I got two of my least favorite Zelda games in AoL and MM.

Just played for another hour. The biggest differences from the first game are the day/night cycle and the water travel. You can switch between day and night by just pressing the ZR button. I used this to finish the first side quest as Throne, to make a thief appear. While on the canoe, I came to a grotto or something with a danger level 34. Quickly turned back around lol.

I thought I read something around the time that the focus turned to just the MP1 remaster that MP1 was a landmark title they wanted to do right, but 2 & 3 might just get ported and bundled together mostly as-is. Remastering all 3 games either separate or bundled wasn't something they felt strongly about doing. But given the interest in MP maybe they'll change their minds.

Doubt there’s many players here but I started playing this on the switch during its beta and then on PS5 when it was one of the monthly free ps plus games. Redownloaded it for my sons Switch when it went FTP and it was the first multiplayer game my son and I played together (he got surprisingly good at it). Next season will be the last and servers are shutting down other than for PC players.
I’m a little shocked because they had paid TMNT content starting in season 7 and added more character's as recently as last season. I figured it was doing ok. It was a very fun game and I’ve put over 400 hours into it with my son. We’ll miss it.

To the point that Nintendo ported over all the good Wii U titles to the Switch. I no longer have a Wii U for this exact reason. The only game I had, that isn't on the Switch, is Xenoblade Chronicles X. I predict the Wii U will be an expensive novelty to own at some point...soon. The systems have held their value well. The actual 'exclusive to the console' games have as well. Hold on to your Wii U's!

15-Feb-2023(#104)Dread was actually pretty awesome gameplay wise, my issue is you have to spend an hour going back thru the map and it turns out you have one pixel on a random wall to blast to progress thru the game. Makes it feel like a slog.
I think Ori is Metroidvania done perfectly. No parts that are so hidden as to actual game progress, etc.
Anyways i really hope we get the trilogy on switch, but it feels like we'll just get Prime and Prime 4..

Beside the HD Zelda remakes, XCX is the only game left that i care about from the Wii U as well...really hoping that XC3 did well enough for them to want to sink their money into it before monolithsoft does something else.

Maybe I'm just bad, but I had to do a lot of backtracking and searching in Ori. More the second one, but some in the first one too.

Honestly I'd skip it if I were
you. They did a great job of making a first person metroid(vania), but it's more classic metroid focused on exploration in a 3d environment. Plus scanning everything is rewarding for lore, but tedious. Lastly I always thought the ending sequence was a letdown. All that said, I'm excited to revisit it, but I'll wait for physical.

Heh - I never heard that one before. Kinda funny since the only thing it had going for it (analog triggers) was abandoned on all their future systems, while their competitors more fully embraced them (to the point where the analog triggers are the ps5 controllers biggest selling point)
As a big fan of racing games, that has always and still does strike me as a bonehead decision.

Excellent summary of my opinions.
I remember playing GC for the first time at a pre-launch event. It was an amazing controller for a first impression. The goofy button design was actually a clever way to lower the learning curve. You instantly knew what button to hit to perform the main and secondary actions on most games.

So far I like the controller. It’s not as nice as the official Pro controller but it’s definitely nice. Solid feeling and good button response. I doubt I’ll mess with the button mapping, macros, or any other customization, but it’s cool to know I can of I want to. To me a big plus is that the D pad is high and on the left, makes it better for old school 2D scrollers IMO. I’d say $50 well spent.

Interesting to know about the D pad, because even in games that use the Switch's left stick for movement, I've found that I often use the D pad instead. So an improvement to that area is a plus.

I knew the remap feature was added but didn't know it had multiple save slots for it, I thought whatever buttons you remapped would stay like that across all games until you changed them back. This is good to know.

19-Feb-2023(#140)Been playing a bunch of the old 2D Mario games simultaneously for some reason, and I was wondering:
Does anyone here hold Super Mario Bros 2 above the more traditional Mario games?
I by no means dislike SMB2, but I'm realizing with these play throughs that I've never ever gotten too far into it. I always find myself just wanting to whip on SMB3 or SMW, or even SMB1. It being a reskin of Doki Doki Panic is just so jarring compared to the rest of the series (even if I obviously didn't know that it was as a kid, first playing it). So yah, I was just wondering if any folks actually hold it in higher regards than the rest of the series or if others feel similar to me. I reiterate: what small amount of the game I've played is real good, but when I want to play classic Mario, it's always the last on my list (will take it over "New" Super Mario Bros any day of the week though).

I wouldn't say it's the best NES Mario, but it's my personal favorite. I love being able to select 4 different characters each with a unique skill set. The areas are so unique thanks to it not being a Mario game originally, and the boss/sub boss fights are better than any of the other early Mario's imo. I also like being able to ride and pick up enemies, leading to some great secret areas and not so secret areas. The warps are there, as are optional sub areas leading to a bit of exploration. Love being able to back track and explore. Sinking sand leading to short cuts. Verticle scrolling stages.
Being one of the few Mario's that buck the trend of save the helpless princess. Lastly it is one of my favorite endings of all video games. From tracking the character use count, to the enemy scroll (and errors), to the final screen with that music. Love the game's music. Love everything about the game. I've beaten it in so many different ways.
I'm so glad we got Doki Doki Panic as Mario 2 instead of "Lost Levels". As a young child, Japan Mario 2 wouldn't have been as exciting. It was a clone of Mario 1 made for people looking for a greater challenge. Mario 2 (USA) was new and refreshing. And when Mario 3 hit, it made the "traditional" formula new and exciting again.

It does to a degree. Everytime you boot up they ask you to revert to defaults, but having (6 save slots I think, maybe 4? Each controller takes a slot so more like 3 or 2.) You have to go default to play normal then select the remap slot to go back.

Wow. That's wild. I was hoping to get one of those. I've been pushing off playing Metroid Prime for ages now. Figured now was a great opportunity. I miss the days when it was simple to just walk into a store, buy that game you were interested in, pay, and leave. Simple. No crazy lines of resellers, or massive amounts of stock gone because someone ordered 27 copies of your game. It's kind of exhausting honestly. Takes some of the fun out of gaming, having to keep in mind that it might not be simple to get the product you're interested in. It's one thing if everyone going for these things were buyers who are actually interested in playing video games. But sadly that's not the case.

Sad times when standard edition games that aren't announced as limited release are being scalped. Wtf is wrong with the people paying more than MSRP? One account had 30+ copies available at nearly $80, and the sad thing is he likely sold some as it was an odd number.
Do these people just visit every local store and buy all the inventory? Seems like a lot of work and risk for what little they make after all the fees and expenses.
I'll just wait patiently for the restock. Also has me a bit worried for Zelda, but N should ship an asks of that.

Once walked into Best Buy to get a 3DS game. The guy behind the counter said he couldn't give me a copy because although they had them in the store, someone had ordered around 20 copies. I think it was 17 or 27. The worker felt bad, but he said they had to fill the online orders.

Yep, that's my #1, and then the original (Metroid II: Return of Samus) is last. Samus Returns and Dread are VERY close for me. Both had their pros and cons over the other. Samus Returns' amazing soundtrack is what ultimately pulled it to the top.

I'm the same way. I bought the Booster Course pass thingy on day one, thinking "alright we're not getting Mario Kart 9 but this will be just as good" and I was pretty hyped for it but I haven't played since the first wave released. It's cool that they're doing this at all, but in the end this is still Mario Kart 8, the same game we've been playing for almost a decade now.
Contrary to what non-fans might think, there is more to each new iteration of Mario Kart than just new tracks.

I know your reasoning was about the extra item making things more chaotic, but in my opinion that's what makes Mario Kart games fun is the chaos. I don't even like returning to pre-MK Wii entries because they're not chaotic enough.
I read today that the online servers for MK8 on Wii U were shut down (also Splatoon), so just for that reason alone I wouldn't consider it the superior game anymore.

It's pretty damn close. One of the more underrated kart racers, that's for sure. It's a shame the one that released after it was nothing but a turd.

You monster
Honestly I wouldn't mind the two items if they went back to 8 karts. But 2 items with 12 karts and it's less of a test of skill and more of whether you happen to get lucky at the end of lap 3.
I'm on board with some randomness but too much chaos and you may as well just do a coin flip to decide the winner.

If the Metroid Dread steel book is anything to go by, I don't think you're overlooking anything. Just a metal box with nice art (that doesn't mean it isn't worth it though, especially if it comes bundled with the game as a pre-order bonus).

I started with Throne, but Hikari is probably my favorite character to use. Not surprising since I usually pick the warrior class in games with job options. Regardless, I haven't removed Throne from my party even though I've finished her last chapter and can swap her out now.

* 5-Mar-2023(#223)I haven't played Metroid Prime since I beat it after launch on GC. At the time it was one of my favorite games. Never replayed it due to so many other great games, then Echoes came out and I absolutely hated it... so much so I picked up Prime 3 way after launch and put almost no time into it.
Playing MPRemastered, I'm reliving that first play through all over again. They did such a great job of turning a 2-d franchise who's main focus was exploration into of all things a "first person shooter". This is where I felt Dread fell flat, they took out the exploration that all good Metroidvanias have. With MPR there is a solid foundation for MP4, and the quality of life improvements help remove some previous concerns. I hope Retro has been stewing on great ideas since 3, and 4 is the new Metroid I've been looking for since Prime.

Zero Mission was actually the first one I played. I didn't play the original and I pushed off Super Metroid for years, and didn't try out Prime. Then I played Zero Mission for one of the game threads on here. Enjoyed it. Then played Dread. Then played Super Metroid a few months ago. I'd say Zero Mission got me into the games.

Well it is remastered, but honestly I think the ground layer was well established. Going to 16:9 (with whatever res/fps it's running) and improving the controls was all it needed. Interested to see if the couple of complaints it gets get patched. I'd guess no. Great game, great remaster!

I don't even think of it as a chaos, I just think newer MK games are more action-packed and fun. I've gone back and played some of the older MK games (MK64 in particular) and they're SO boring. Just long stretches of driving with nothing happening. No thanks. Even with so much more going on in the newer games, the better players are still going to win the majority of the time (but not every single time) and I think that makes it more exciting. One of the best feelings is when you have some bad luck, get knocked around a few times, and still manage to comeback and squeeze out the win. It's nowhere close to a coin flip. Go find some of the top players to play with and let me know how many times you win due to the randomness and chaos.

Though I have been pretty good about it last year. Only added a couple of games to the backlog (though one of them, Metroid Dread, I knew I'd be making an exception for. And it's not on the backlog anymore. I opened it and beat it. Was worth it too, imo)

Until the CPU realizes you're casually cruising along in first then boosts the AI's speed 10-fold until they pass you. (MK64) I always hated racing in that game, but I loved the battle. Still my favorite battle mode.

My daughter and I use it for Wii U fit and my family and I have been using it for Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival. We play that once a month to see what's different and to play with all of our AC amiibo. It also stores data on your amiibo, so I've been using Kicks.

I think I only have half of Japan and the orient express left if memory serves me. I know I have the first map and US complete. The mountains on the other hand are a pain. I wonder how long until the value of this game plummets. I'm not much of a fan of beat em ups either, but I've always loved the TMNT games. Shredder's Revenge was excellent. I got it for Father's Day last year and made my wife play it with me and the kids lol

I've seen it described as a "platforming metroidvania", and I think that's fair. Maybe a bit more platforming than metroidvania, but there's enough metroidvania elements in it that I think that label is totally reasonable.
@back4more Both are definitely "must haves" IMO, and well worth those prices.

13-Mar-2023(#298)Thanks @KCPenguins and @Scott . I started the second Ori gamelast night and see what you guys mean about the platforming, cool combo with the metroidvania.

14-Mar-2023(#301)For me, GameCube is the only system I finished it on. I played TP on both Wii and Wii U but stopped about halfway through. Loved it that first time though.
Metroid Prime, on the other hand, I didn't finish on GC. I saved in the Phazon Mines last night and that's the farthest I've ever been. Really like it and hope the other two come to Switch.

* 14-Mar-2023(#302)I wonder which is a better experience for the Twilight Princess prior to the Wii U:
