Nintendo Entertainment System The Legend of Zelda

image

Introducing The Legend of Zelda is almost a silly proposition. The humble top-down adventure game, which began life as a Famicom Famicom Disk System launch title before porting to the Nintendo Entertainment System Nintendo NES as the first ever cartridge with a battery save - introduced the world to the silent protagonist link, the eponymous Princess Zelda, the mysterious Triforce, and the land of Hyrule, all of which are now synonymous with Nintendo's legendary (no pun intended) tentpole franchise. Many series tropes - the treasure chest chime, life-refilling fairies, a gauntlet of eight hidden dungeons - began here, and the game's very first line of dialogue is iconic enough to deserve it's own Wikipedia page. Unsurprisingly, while the original The Legend of Zelda has never been remade or remastered, it has been ported to nearly every iteration of Nintendo's classic games library, got its own cartridge re-release for the Game Boy Advance Game Boy Advance, and even its own Game & Watch Game & Watch-styled modern handheld.

September 2023 Edition - PlayStation Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider is one of the defining titles of the 32-bit generation, offering gamers a fully-3D third-person action adventure unlike anything they'd seen before. Tomb Raider introduced the world to Lara Croft, who remains even today one of the most recognizable game characters ever, known for her grit, her athletics, and various other... hmmm... aspects to her personality. While the game was launched first for the Sega Saturn Saturn, the game is remembered as a pivotal title for the original PlayStation PlayStation as well as a hallmark for the advent of 3D acceleration on the PC / Windows PC. The franchise spawned numerous sequels, no less than two reboots, and two mediocre forays into Hollywood, though the original game found a new life on mobile devices - including a surprisingly compitant port for the Nokia N-Gage - and a modernized remake for seventh-generation platforms.

Finish Tomb Raider or its remake to earn the Lara Croft badge:

Beat any of the Front Room arcade games (or complete one loop, where appropriate) or one of their home ports to earn the game's Front Room Arcade Machine badge:

July 2023 Edition - coin Nintendo Entertainment System Bionic Commando

Bionic Commando swung into coin arcades intent on being a successor to Capcom's Commando, but the game's protagonist - who uses a bionic telescopic arm to traverse levels and get the drop on enemies - made the title stand out among the other run-and-guns on the scene. After a number of direct ports to home computers, Capcom reimagined the game for the Nintendo Entertainment System NES and Game Boy Game Boy with more levels, faster gameplay, and unforgettable soundtracks. Both the arcade original and the console versions have been re-released countless times over the years as mainstays in Capcom collections, but Bionic Commando Re-armed for the Microsoft Xbox 360 Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 PlayStation 3 - a "more than a remaster" reboot that enhances the NES classic's levels and mechanics with modern graphics - gave the franchise a brief second wind and kicked off a generation of retro remakes.

DAYYY-TOOOO-NAAAAAAAAAAAH USA is one of the highest-grossing coin arcade games of all time, praised for its advanced graphics, its realistic physics, and of course, its unforgettable original soundtrack. The game - and its enhanced follow-up - ended up being a flagship launch-window title for the Sega Saturn before finding a home on PC / Windows 3D-accelerated PCs shortly after.

May 2023 Edition - Atari Jaguar PlayStation Sega Saturn Rayman

Rayman launched an empire of cartoonish platformers, became one of Ubisoft's first unofficial mascots, and spawned a race of parasites so vile, they even threatened the Mushroom Kingdom. The hand-drawn hero made up for a lack of a body with excellent animations, psychadelic level design, and an incredible amount of detail to distract you from some brutal platforming and bosses. Originally intended to be a Atari Jaguar Jaguar exclusive, the first Rayman adventure fell onto the scene in 1995 for the PlayStation PlayStation, Sega Saturn Saturn, and PC / Windows PC, eventually being ported to a variety of handhelds as the horsepower became available.

Beat Rayman or any of its ports to earn the Rayman badge:

April 2023 Edition - Game Boy Advance Golden Sun

Golden Sun was published by Nintendo in 2001, shortly after the launch of the Game Boy Advance Game Boy Advance. Calling back to the best RPGs of the 16-bit era, it was at the time one of the largest RPGs to ever launch for a handheld. The game is remembered years later for its unique magic system which uses spells not just for battle but for navigating the world and solving puzzles.

Beat Golden Sun to earn the Isaac badge:

March 2023 Edition - coin Virtua Fighter

Virtua Fighter released in coin arcades in 1993 and is widely-considered the first 3D fighting game ever. Its character designs and fighting mechanics have gone on to inspire numerous other fighting games that followed. Sega developed home ports of the game for its Sega Saturn Saturn and Sega 32X 32X consoles, and followed up with a Virtua Fighter Remix re-release that improved the graphics.

Beat Virtua Fighter or any of its re-releases to earn a badge for the character you used:

February 2023 Edition - Super Nintendo Final Fantasy VI

Final Fantasy VI - released as Final Fantasy III in North America - was originally released for the Super Famicom Super Famicom and Super Nintendo Super Nintendo. The game's legacy as the last old-guard Final Fantasy game is massive, and it's still celebrated for its memorable characters, unique antagonist, and robust soundtrack.

January 2023 Edition - Nintendo 64 Doom 64

Doom 64 was released as a brand new Doom campaign for the Nintendo 64 Nintendo 64, set after the events of Final Doom. While not extremely successful or lauded upon its release, the game has become somewhat of a cult classic over the years for its difficulty and atmosphere, in part due to a spooky ambient soundtrack from Aubrey Hodges. The game's sleeper status peaked in recent years when Bethesda dropped a remaster of the game in 2020 for modern platforms at a bargain price.
Beat Doom 64 or its remaster to earn a badge.

It's hard to beat Doom 64 on that front.

Lunar: The Silver Star is close.

You have to use an item that's sat idle in your inventory for most of the game, repeatedly, so even if you think to try it, it doesn't appear to be working.

But that's more of a Guide Dang It than a "I regret my life choices" concept.

I clearly should not have looked at that spoiler, despite the fact I may never play that game.
Of course it is interesting to think of all the weird things they used to leave as secrets
in our favorite old games. Things that dont make any sense or things that are just
kind of a fudgeed up thing to do to someone trying to enjoy a simple game of Doom.

One thing I do still have to say though is many of the levels in Doom 64 are kinda gorgeous.
At least they wanted you to enjoy some of the scenery in your adventures.
Some of the level layouts are also really cool then some others are just literally to make the player
never want to play that level again.

I think it's a matter of mindset, too. If I was thirteen and Doom 64 was one of the few N64 games I had in my collection, if I encountered the same problem, I'd probably think, "Fine, I'll start over and be a badass this time around. Ten more hours with an awesome game."

Now, at my age with my limited play windows, it's extremely frustrating. I usually end up just brute forcing myself into a broken strategy rather than going back and doing things properly. I just did that with Mega Man 8. A dozen or so failed attempts at Dr. Wily and I considered going back and farming bolts for more upgrades, but that would mean more time playing through levels I already finished, plus going through Wily Tower again, plus repeating that infernal surfing segment.

No thanks. Wily got his due. Eventually.

Mega Man 8 is one of the few games in which you can leave the Wily stages to play one of the Robot Master ones, then pick up where you left off. smile

This is true, its definitely a mindset when deciding on how you want to
spend the limited time we do have playing. Im still going to try to play more
Twisted Metal this month. I thought about seeing if I could get a different
game digitally on PS3 too if I just can’t do any better in TM3.
The video I watched the other day had a great looking game
and when I saw it I really wanted to play it.
I cannot remember which game though so I plan to
play through whichever one I can.

Oh and also Mega Man 2 when the 2ds power adapter I ordered
from ebay gets here.

Hopefully now that things are less hectic for me I
can put some real time into these games.

Congrats on Mega Man 8 thats pretty cool.
I can’t even remember which games in the series I have
actually finished anymore.

I just assumed that wasn't the case. After banging my head against the wall with the second surfing sequence, I saved my game, turned off the Saturn, and when I came back, I had to do it all over again.

Upon doing more research, it seems I'm mistaken. I could sworn they'd fixed that by 8, but maybe it was later.

At one point I would be excited about this. But I've moved on to emulating anything older than PS2 that I don't own. N64 games look great on a 3.5" screen at 1x resolution with a CRT filter and scanlines. That's the best way to play N64, imo.

I beat Twisted Metal: Head-On with Mr. Grimm. I had a good time overall.

Driving around and blasting foes was engaging. I liked loading up on homing missiles and ballistics and then wreaking havoc on the competition. It was cool exploring the different stages, too. The bosses gave me a run for my money, too. Bonus points to Tower Tooth, who chases you endlessly, puts up a force field, and throws you around like a rag doll with his lightning. A real jerk, he is!

I think that’s the last game I’ll play for this birthday bash. This was a really neat way to celebrate your impending mortality, Ren. Thanks for the imminent sub time and eShop funds! And good luck with MDK2.

Wow, that got dark quickly.

I love Twisted Metal games but hate nearly every one of the boss fights. They're really the only times I wish I could get out of my car, find the high ground, and strafe like a cheeseball until they're scrap metal.

Primeval in Small Brawl wasn't so bad, but he has a ton of HP and he wears out his welcome fast. He respawns four times throughout the level, reappearing every time you kill another enemy to Frankeinstein the parts.

I'm just playing. You've got tons of time on your clock, man. smile
I might win a cheap copy of Grip for Switch, but we'll just have to see.

Good grief, I'm trying to play Mega Man 2 and after beating the 8 dudes and then taking the path to the Wily 'castle'... I need to face a boss gauntlet all over again... rapidly losing interest and thank goodness for save states.

I also tried out One Must Fall, finding a ROM and interestingly noticed that Retroarch was listed as a way to play it. Fooled around with that for a few mins and got it to run in DosBox-Pure and it even supported my Stadia controller over USB-C. I could go through the menus and selected a pilot and frame... then the 1v1 match was over in like 4 seconds as my opponent was going crazy fast and I had no idea what inputs should work. Game had some promise, but I don't know how much time I would need to invest into getting it to run properly.

'Walking away' or taking a short break from some games helps - after a break I went back to MM2 and was able to beat it. The boss rush bit wasn't horrible once I could recall the best methods for beating each, and I was following along with a wiki for pointers on the order and weapons to use since that's the most time I've ever put into an older MM title. I just wasn't a huge fan of the series and feel like getting some pointers/tips is helpful and innocent enough. The final boss was tough and I used up all for energy tanks I had and still only just beat the game with under 50% health.
Proof:

There's a Configuration option on the main menu. Choose it, and there's an option for game speed, which you can turn down to make the game work on fast machines.

I believe you can also tweak DOSBox to simulate a slower machine, but the in-game option works just as well.

We're 2/3 of the way through the month, and I'm two days away from eating cake. Let's take a look at everyone that's been helping me celebrate this month.

There's still ten more days to play games, decorate cakes, and earn additional places in the end-of-month raffle. Keep sharing your accomplishments here or in the extravaganza thread until then.

I'm sure you're all excited to have your say in what we play again, so let's start taking nominations for the November Game of the Month.

We'll start voting on October 26 and call the winners in November. What does everyone want to play?

Im still grinding on Mega Man 2 its a good game.

Im in Dr Wilys Castle but also been Drinking and whatever else too much.

Never Drink and try to play through a Mega Man. I beat all 8 character
Stages Wednesday and ….. been drinking too much that day and since.
I never look at walkthroughs really and while I have been
using save states I use them sparingly, almost to the point
of I would have been right here, right now either way.

But again thats to be expected, since the game while
annoying sometimes, and occasionally cheap as fudge at others
is still a really good game, maybe even great.
Its easier to tell afterwards but right now I am still teetering
on it being great. The bosses are surprisingly easy to defeat
with just the default weapon, but some are INSANELY easy with
their counter weapons. But then again even if you “know”
what you are supposed to do there is alot of difficulty where save states
would make this game more palatable for any player of any
skill level. Thanks Nes Classic Mini!

Of all the games to play this month I would have to imagine
this is the one that would be the most universally appealing.
Out of the two games I’m playing this month already this one
Is WAY better than the other.

Hopefully more people start this game since it really is fun! 😃

So I finally beat Mega Man 2 and its a great game.
Its not hard with the save states but I don’t know if I would have been able to finish it
if I hadn't used them especially at the end. Obviously I could have but its just
very frustrating and time consuming to make mistakes in certain places
without having any idea how to pass certain spots. Then replaying the whole levels.

I miss the way passing hard games felt and it was more rewarding.
Is it just me or does it seem different now?

Anyways I know it was only the second game in the series and fairly old
but I didnt really get the ending. It did look great though so I guess it doesn’t
matter too much.

In my opinion its at least an 8.5 out of 10.

Thanks for the advise @Renaissance2K about One Must Fall - I tried again and lowered the speed to the lowest (EDIT - correction, I was 1 tick up from slowest) and it was maybe a bit 'off' (too slow possibly) but I could at least play with it. I was on Rookie CPU difficulty but still struggled with the first 2-3 matches, even losing the 2nd fight but opting to continue with my selection and I got better/more accustomed to my fighter selection and even earned 2 perfect rounds while generally doing better against all foes in a 'general 1-player run'.
Not sure if you consider that beat or not, but I reached the end fight vs. Major Kreissack but b/c of the low difficulty I wasn't allowed to fight him. My score I believe reset after I had to continue after fight 2, but I reached 1.33 million points, thanks to those perfect rounds and doing generally well. I used Steffan in the Jaguar frame.

I figure I will raise the difficulty some and try another run. Can post a snip as proof of beating this. I will say the music that plays after a fight when the 'news blurb' is on screen was rather good and I can see why you liked this game as a kid, it's enjoyable.

Ok I beat One Must Fall 2097 on the Veteran difficult and it was a challenge, largely b/c I wasn't very good with this frame and knowing the moves. I upped the speed as well and turned off the optional arena attacks that were more of a distraction vs. worthwhile leaving on. For this attempt I used Raven in the Chronos frame after reading that the agility stat of the pilot didn't matter too much to me. I tried a few frames out and liked the look of some, but not the general moves. Chronos wasn't too bad and I did okay with it. I still lost a match or 2 before finally getting the hang of that frame.

I didn't want to play it all in one sitting so I actually tried and got save states to work and only really needed them against the final fighter, Kreissack - who was brutal. The difficulty ramp up with him was not fun, but I also really didn't know what moves to use and only finally got him after learning how to better trigger the freeze projectile. Chronos other teleport move I could pull off more easily, but 90% of the dang time I'd reappear and get thrown vs. anything useful, so I didn't pull off that move too much. I resorted to the strong front kick a bunch in the final fight and that wasn't very effective.

I also started up the Tournament mode and won a single fight but wasn't crazy about that mode and all that seemed to be involved there. A neat concept, but maybe it was the limited controls, or even the Stadia controller I was trying, but I never got too comfortable playing this, especially without having a chance to learn the move sets - granted I suspect I could've found them online somewhere since the game explicitly doesn't wish to give them to you.

Here's proof:
