I think it's fairly evident that Nintendo hasn't really been too concerned with evolving the 2D Mario format for years at this point. As soon as they started in on the New Super Mario Bros series, they seemed content with just introducing a new power-up each game and pumping out levels that, while fun enough, never really broke the mold as far as the genre goes. In the old NES/SNES days, each 2D Mario seemed to introduce new elements to the actual gameplay and level design itself... NSMB always seemed like just more of the same in my opinion.
I feel like that was probably a direct result of the older generation of developers thinking that the majority of their eggs needed to be placed into the 3D Mario basket because they were around for the transition from 2D to 3D. Now it looks like some younger developers are reintroducing Nintendo to the idea that 2D platforming can be every bit as fun and innovative as it used to be, and that there really is a market of gamers who are still interested in that style of game.
So kudos to Nintendo for finally taking a chance in that realm. Here's hoping Wonder can meet the hype levels so we get more of this sorta thing.
I'm prepared to be disappointed if I'm being honest. The player seems super overpowered and I haven't seen anything too challenging yet. I'm concerned the difficult areas/stages will be short and easily avoidable/nerfed from the little I saw.

People make all kinds of challenges to increase difficulty of games after they have otherwise mastered it. Examples:
Get through the game without collecting any extra lives (extra hard: also forbidden from collecting 100 coins and getting an extra life that way) Get through the game without taking any damage from bosses Get through the game without using powerups Play in 4 player co-op, and whenever any player loses a life, treat it as permadeath and they are out of the game.
You can make a whole YouTube or Twitch channel about crap like this.
Anytime someone complains that a game is too easy, I say that they lack imagination.

I don't feel like the trailers/released footage have really offered any indication one way or the other as far as difficulty goes. I could see it being either/or so far. I agree I'll be a bit disappointed if it's too easy... that's one of my main criticisms toward Mario Odyssey and the NSMB games -- way too easy. It's a modern Mario game, so I don't expect it to reach the same difficulty levels that a game like SMB3 reached at points, but I would like it to offer enough of a challenge so that I don't just run through the entire thing. But yah, I dunno, I can't really hinge my expectations on the difficulty from the footage we've seen so far. Hopefully the fact that there are designated "easy mode" characters means that there's a little more meat on the bone.
On a different note, my buddy gifted me No Man's Sky for Switch. I dug the game when I first got it a few months after it initially released -- the space travel is still my favorite from any game -- and I dug what I played of it about a year or so ago after all the updates... but I've never really fully immersed myself in it. With it being in the palm of my hand now, I expect I'll get into it much more this time around. I know the multiplayer elements patched into the game are missing from the Switch version, but that doesn't really bother me. Pretty crazy that they got it working this well on the Switch in the first place.
How did I not know about this. I used to watch Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill movies when I was a kid. How on god's green earth did they end up as titular characters in a video game, and how did it do well enough to warrant a sequel!
I knew they were popular in Europe, but I never imagined they were THAT popular.

I saw that in the eShop a few weeks ago. I didn't know it was based on already existing characters, I thought it was just another indie dev trying to make their game sound goofy and stand out from the rest..

I feel like "slaps and beans" is a reference I can't recall from Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill's movies.
Thinking about it more, Terrence Hill slaps the crap out of multiple people in some of the movies and they are always eating beans. So Hill must be slaps and Bud is Beans.
So funny a game got made in the 2010's based on 2 european actors who were popular in the 1970s mostly making C level cheap westerns.
Another stupid e-shop quirk. My kid had a small amount of eshop funds left and wanted a Minecraft pack. He bought it. It started to download like a new game instead of dlc for Minecraft. Turns out at some point in time there was a Minecraft Nintendo Switch Edition which just changed to Minecraft.
The DLC in the eshop is just for the Switch edition of Minecraft, and does not work in plain Minecraft on Switch. So he has DLC for a version of Minecraft he cannot download.
What a load of crap. Take the stuff down, or warn purchasers they are buying DLC for a game they don't have installed. No clue how we were able to use eshop to purchase the Avatar Minecraft pack.
Why in the fudge would they allow the same game to be released twice on the same console, obsoleting the first release?
Definitely need clear warnings about versions in that type of scenario. I'm pretty sure Nintendo would refund the purchase assuming it hasn't been too long.
Someone made a level in Super Mario Maker 2 that takes over 19 hours to beat. It's basically entering and re-entering pipes and using every bit of that 500 second timer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozliNRSs2pE
The game itself looks great. I don't know if I can handle the sound effects. The jumping noise is weird. The constant yells are annoying. Like Peach has 2 yells during her Wonder Seed time, and they just keep repeating. The music also sounds very uninspired, which is not like Mario at all.
It sounds like they all have different jumping noises. I don't mind those too much. I could do without the yelling and whatnot, but it's not enough to worry me. The gameplay itself looks super fun.
I watched a video earlier today where the developers touched on the game's difficulty. Apparently one of the developers who has worked on every 2D Mario since the original SMB said that Wonder is the first one he couldn't 100% without help. It sounds like there are some decently difficult levels in the game, especially as you get closer to the end, with getting 100% (collecting/finding all the badges and secrets) being very difficult.
This does make me feel like the majority of the game will be fairly accessible as far as difficulty goes but it's nice to know that there are significantly harder portions.
Just snagged one of those Switch replacement docks that don't cover the screen and allows you to play while charging. Pretty neat. Setting it up right under my work monitors for easy access, don't tell my boss.
That's actually pretty cool. Tempted to pick it up, but I'll probably wait to see if Switch 2 is compatible with Switch 1 games and docks. Guessing no on at least the latter. Awesome you can switch from charge station to dock, bummer they didn't include any cables, but gotta cut costs somehow. Looks great for traveling (or sneeking in charged tabletop mode at work :P ).
Ohh yah, it’s gonna be perfect for a level of Mario or round of Rocket League in between cases at work. I work from home and literally only got this dock for the purpose of keeping it charged on my work desk for whenever I have some downtime haha
> I have often thought about taking a paycut for a lower stress job that would afford
> me such opportunities...
Triple dog dare you. Between my day job and my freelance writing job, I’m fairly comfy. No kids or anything though, just the fiance… so these days may be numbered haha
yeah I don't believe that's what it's gonna look like at all. I'm more inclined to believe that is a false patent to troll all the leakers and rumor mill people.
So Wonder out in less than 3 days, no? Who's got it preordered, who's getting it day 1, who's waiting for reviews and who's waiting for a discount? I'm sitting on a voucher, but thinking physical is the way to go once again with kids... and I'd like to here more about it in reviews. we'll see.
Got it preordered, so it’s a day 1 for me. Just about everything I’ve seen/been hearing has me very hyped up for this game. It’s got me actually sort of annoyed that I have a wedding to go to on Saturday so I can’t just spend my weekend with Mario. Gonna get a chance to use the Switch as it was intended though - at a hotel haha
I went and pre-ordered Super Mario Bros. Wonder in the eShop last Friday and it's already downloaded. I wasn't originally planning to, but I'll probably start playing it right at midnight because I have no self control. This is very likely the last full priced retail game I'm buying for the remainder of the year.
Got Wonder digital and physical. My Kid was super into Mario until he discovered Minecraft and Farmin Sim. Looking forward to getting him off those for a bit and playing Wonder together!
This also means less time with Lords of the Fallen and Spiderman =(

ordered on walmart.com since they had exclusive trading cards. I'll keep those sealed and packed in with the game. I'm playing crisis core but I'll take a break for a week to beat mario wonder, for sure.
Someone over at gfaqs (In case you're thinking "What are you doing over at gfaqs? A middle aged man on gfaqs? Seriously there are mostly middle aged men on gfaqs so gimmie a break, lol).
Nintendo removed the original switch announce trailer. I didn't think of this but someone posted, of course they won't want people searching and finding the original switch trailer when they announce switch 2. Which got me thinking, maybe they are actually planning on having a reveal trailer for switch 2 soon? It makes sense why they would remove the OG reveal trailer if you think of it that way.
I have read that despite the developers claiming it to be real difficult in spots, Wonder is actually real easy. So if the difficulty was something you were apprehensive about, this is probably sorta bad news.
Personally not a deal breaker for me, because even those acknowledging the easy difficulty are saying the game is just so purely fun that it doesn't really matter. I'm still hoping for a level of challenge, at least toward the end of the game, but won't be TOO tiffed if it isn't there.
Sounds like the difficult parts are skippable which makes it easy. I'm not expecting the best 2d Mario, and honestly not even expecting it to be better than NSMBU. If it's better than the rest of the "new" series it's worth it. If the kids enjoy it it's worth it. It looks like a great game for my youngest. I'm guessing the older two go back to Minecraft pretty quickly.

I generally like more challenging games, but some games are just so charming and fun to play, that I can overlook them being easy. Most Mario games come to mind, as well as Yoshi's Woolly World and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. I can tell just from the little bit I've seen that this game is going to be a blast to play. I'm so pumped. Me and my kids are camping out in the game room tomorrow night and are going to stay up as late as we can playing it.

I enjoyed NSMBU, but come on, there's no way this game isn't going to be way better than it.
Mario wonder will be better. I bought nsmbu for switch and couldn’t finish it. I think I love it on Wii U because of the excitement and newness of the controller screen at the time.
I never played the OG game so I'm very interested in snagging this, but will probably wait until I'm done with Wonder and need another "bedside table" game for the Switch. Looking forward to it though. Between this and the news that a live-action Gargoyles show is entering development, I'm getting that Gargoyles itch that I felt as a kid back.
Way too early to form a solid opinion just yet, but so far SMB Wonder is freakin' fun and I don't expect that to change. I'm not finding some of the music to be as catchy as past games, but maybe it will grow on me over time. Super easy, but hopefully that's just because I'm only an hour into it. Also if you want to play with the ghosts of other players in real-time, you have to enable it in the options menu. I don't think they bothered to explain that part, I thought it'd be on by default. But yeah, it's been fun so far but I'm gonna stop here for tonight, around 10-ish levels in (but that's including two of what felt more like bonus levels/mini-games).
> I sorta (definitely) want that Bluey game for Switch, if only to play with my nephews

It looks charming as hell. The best children's show of my kids' and even my generation. My youngest, of 8, is showing signs of getting out of that junior age level, but Bluey is one she still goes back to. I'm hoping the game will make for a good Christmas gift.
It's honestly a great show. Like... actually good. It's definitely a kid's show, but there are elements of it that you'd never pick up on unless you were an adult. And not in an "edgy" way or anything like that, just little bits and jokes that resonate with the older crowd. They definitely took into account that parents would need to sit through the show WITH their kids haha
> I sorta (definitely) want that Bluey game for Switch, if only to play with my nephews

I had never heard of it until Johnny Gargano mentioned it in a promo (might've been when he returned on Raw). I'm out of the loop on children's shows post Yo Gabba Gabba.
@longhornsk57 I'll definitely make a post on here after we've gotten to play a solid hour or so! It will be later in the evening though, like 8 or 9 EST.
Beat the first world. Going as expected for the most part so far. The castle was decent. Wonder is the perfect name for this game as you really do wonder what's going to happen next. There was one moment so far that I totally loved, but another spot I didn't do what the game wanted and got apparently stuck. The enemy that would get me where I needed to go didn't respawn. I had to do a blind YOLO jump air twirling to slow my fall and I was able to make the jump. Unless I missed something that was very unNintendo like. Did a couple stages in World 2 and actually died, so that's a good sign.
Out of the 9 badges I've unlocked so far, I've only used two. Parachute cap (which I think they pretty much give at the start) and the one I've used since the moment I unlocked it, Floating High Jump. Hopefully I'll get some use out of the others eventually, but for now the one I'm using is serving me well and there hasn't been a need to change it because it is helpful at reaching the top of the flagpoles which is one of the requirements for going for 100% completion.
Playing Wonder is legit making me feel like a kid again. I’m getting that “first time playing a new Mario” feel that just wasn’t there with other Mario games, as fun as they all are. It just feels so fresh. That…
…musical bit after getting the wonder seed in the second level…
…had me smiling from ear to ear. Already in love with this game.
We both love Mario games, but never played the New series together because we got frustrated with jumping on each other and all the weird obstructionist physics. We had a BLAST with this game, though.
Enjoying world 2 much more than 1. Still not difficult, even the first 4 star difficult was easy, but I've died a few times and was stumped a bit on another level. Things are looking up.
> Would really wanna know what you think of it since I have it slated to play tomorrow.
Just finished World 1. Me and my son are both freaking LOVING it! Even though it's been pretty easy, every level is just such a joy to play though. I was a bit bummed when I read that there were only 6 worlds (6 MAIN worlds, I assume), but man, world 1 was PACKED! There were so many levels, not to mention bonus stages. It felt like 1.5 worlds worth of content compared to older Mario games, so this game definitely isn't lacking in levels, that's for sure. I'll be surprised if this doesn't end up being my favorite 2D Mario game, it's just that good already!

Yes! This has been me all the way, just grinning ear to ear the whole time I'm playing!

I'm so glad that in multiplayer, you just go straight through each other and can't mess each other up. Multiplayer Mario is 100 times more enjoyable now!
I think my only complaint so far is that you can only use one badge at a time. I really love the badges and would love to be able to use at least 2 at a time. Especially since my favorite is the gliding cap, which kind of feels like it should just be a permanent ability that Mario has.

Haha my 6 yr old did the same! He beat Odyssey, 3d world, Bowsers Fury, and was working on 64 + Sunshine, was super into all things Mario... Until he discovered Minecraft. Thought Wonder would get him back to Mario and it was working, till it wasn't. He still wants to play it, with me, but he needed just his Minecraft fix tonight before we watched Willy Wonka for Friday movie night.
The game is fantastic though. We're still early into it, kinda easy, wish the gliding badge was permanent. Love how some of the characters don't take damage, but can't use power ups (good way to get my 3 year old daughter into it).
Can't wait to see more, very impressed so far (hoping difficulty bumps up a bit).

Tbh my first run is probably gonna be a “gliding cap” exclusive run. I don’t see myself changing it much… but I imagine certain parts of the game will require the other badge powers, so there’s immediate replayability for me. This game rules.

Ugh you just HAD to bring up Spider-man 2… I cannot friggin wait to play that game but the PS5 is still out of my financial reach. Hopefully the post-wedding period will grant me that console lol
My copy got delivered a building over. Looked at the picture, mine was on top of a pile, went to the door it was delivered to, neighor was like "I didn't bring in the packages today, let me talk to my boyfriend", she comes back a few minutes later and says everything we got was ours and we didn't get that third package. I was like "So you only got two?" She was like, I mean, I've had packages taken from me, and I was like "so you think someone took the smallest, lightest envelope and left the rest behind." She just sorta shrugged, there wasn't much I could do so I smiled and gave her my door number if she did end up finding it.
Got on the horn with Amazon CS, their auto attendant was like you can get a refund after October 23, I was like chat with agent. It was like "agent will not be able to give you refund or replacement", I hit chat with agent, it was like "We're going to put you in a queue but one more time, chat agent will NOT be able to assist with product replacement!" hit chat with agent. Agent came on, i was like "Look at that picture of where you delivered it to, and look at the dozen deliveries you've taken pictures of that I got. That's not the same door." Agent was like "refund or replacement?" Should be here today. Spent all night playing Silent Hope instead ;(
super mario wonder is pretty damn good so far. I like all the different "twists" with each wonder seed change in the levels. I'm at the end of level 2. It feels like the creativity has tappered off a little. Either nothing has beaten the singing flowers in world one for me, and the levels really haven't topped that yet. Or I'm just adjusting to the weirdness. Desensitized so to speak.
Still great but I hope the levels can pick up the wow factor again soon.
> So basically you're neighbor just stole your copy. What a dick. Hope it arrives soon
> for you.
I assume the best in most situations, but that's what it looked like. However, this morning right before I started cooking my instant pot spaghetti (It's Saturday!) I heard a knock on the door while I was chopping onions and smashing garlic, lo and behold, boyfriend appears with an open envelope! Apologized for opening it, says he didn't order a video game, I thanked him three times for returning it. Maybe he was looking out for karma, maybe it was a legitimate mistake and he thought the envelope was something else and didn't bother checking the label. I guess I've got two copies now. Wowie zowie
To be fair, Amazon fudgeed this up. It's a complex, there's more than one Apartment C believe it or not mister vanman
Something similar happened with the first Switch I bought off eBay in 2017. (Bought that one used but the ACNH and Zelda OLED I have now were both purchased new.) Neighbor apparently stole it, feigned ignorance and then brought it over to me after a few days. Forgot what excuse it was he gave.
Also, as somebody who finally actually tripped on the ol’ mushrooms for the first time recently, the way Wonder fudges around with the audio and makes it more echoey when Mario gets the wonder seed is very similar to how it sounds when taking psychedelics. Those “younger developers” who had input on this game 100% knew what they were doing.
I'm already heading towards the 6th (and final?) Wonder Seed. I saved the Fungi Mines for last. There were some really good levels in whatever the lava world is called. It was still a bit on the easy side but also still enjoying my damn self quite a bit.
> like the creativity has tappered off a little. Either nothing has beaten the singing

Not me. I'm halfway through world 3 and still loving the craziness. There have been a couple duds, but most of the wonder seed sections have been great IMO.

When I saw the talking flowers in the reveal I loved em. Still love em in the game. Too each their own man, glad you can mute them if you don't like them. But it's so different from any other Mario game ever. Like seriously not many "Nintendo" titles have full lines of dialogue. And I like their quips as you pass by them. I always make sure to get close enough to each one as I play.
Used my voucher to get Wonder today and happy with the decision. I played through the first world with one of my nephews and we had a blast. He has watched the Tree House content on the game so he was well ahead of me on what to expect.
The game is super easy, which is great because I've been looking for something that me and my son can play. He's been obsessed with New Super Lucky's Tales, so hopefully we can play something more co-op.
I just finished Super Mario Bros. Wonder. That Bowser fight has overtaken the one in New Super Mario Bros. Wii as my favorite Bowser fight of them all. I only died once during it though, so I'm questioning their difficulty rating scale because that sure didn't feel like 5 stars.
Overall, great game. I'm just about ready to crown it as my favorite mainline 2D Mario game. Going to get started on reaching 100% in a bit.
Even the end credits sequence was fun too
my high score is 349, I haven't checked but I hope I can return to it without having to beat Bowser every time.
I just finished Special World in SMB Wonder. So glad I saved this world for last. While I was able to one-shot half the levels (reach top of flagpole and get the collectibles in one attempt without dying) this is much closer to the difficulty I'd like throughout the rest of the game. These levels were some of the most fun in the entire game, and that final level especially, (insert chef's kiss emoji here). Difficulty-wise it might almost be on par with Champion's Road, though it's not too bad if you use the standees of other players online to revive you.
I believe there are a small handful of levels I've yet to unlock from earlier in the game, but besides that I think all that's left for me to do is grind for purple coins to buy the remaining 30 standees I don't have yet.
There's a few ideas from this game I'd like to see in a potential Super Mario Maker 3, particularly the badges. I feel like Nintendo didn't come close to making full use of their potential and some creative level makers might be able to do more with them.
edit:
There's actually a super secret final level that I didn't know about when I originally made this post. This one looks to be too tough for me, but I'll give it a try later.
> I played exclusively as Luigi like I always do when it's an option. After a while

I've been desensitized somewhat, but I still notice it. It was jarring at first. I switched off from Luigi for awhile because of it. No issues with Mario or Toad though.
In the last regular level and sort of loosing that wonder. I really like the visuals, new enemies, zaniness and that they are trying something different. On a different note it feels too different for me. It's definitely easier. The platforming feels less involved, but there are some good platforming levels albethem easy. The few deaths I have usually feel either completely careless or cheap. Not really caring much for the new power ups. All said I think this is a great start to a new series if they can expand upon it. Give me ghost houses and castles/battleships with boss battles every world. Give me 8 worlds. Give me more platforming mixed in with the zaniness. You can keep some of the other non-platforming levels, but have them be in addition to traditional levels. The Wonder sections of each "standard" level seems to have removed what would otherwise be more levels. Still have the end game and bonus worlds to go, so this might all change.
I'm really hoping Switch 2 has a Super Mario Maker 2 Deluxe (or 3) with the base game as is and a Wonder version added. There could be some phenomenal user created levels using Wonder's assets. So many possibilities.
I definitely noticed the difference in Luigi's voice, but it wasn't too bad at all. I mean we all probably have a fondness of Luigi's pitiful callouts to Mario in Luigi's Mansion. So you can tell a difference. But I will wait for a Luigi title to really judge how good it is. My first impression was, I'm not missing anything.
> I'm really hoping Switch 2 has a Super Mario Maker 2 Deluxe (or 3) with the base

When I'm thinking to myself, what can Nintendo possibly do with Switch 2 to "1up" their A game they did with the Switch. When you mentioned that I thought, oh yeah, that's almost guaranteed, I think.
Hearing a lot of complaints about the flower voices? Ive left it on default and I think they are great. They add to the silliness and I do not find them annoying at all. For comparison the endless "bah, bah" from the NEW series was extremely annoying haha
Just beat Bowser. Still need to finish the Special World and some other stuff. Going to start Red Dead Redemption now, but will come back to Wonder. Liked it more than any NSMB game I've played and most 3D Mario games as well. It's definitely one of my favorite Mario titles now. Don't know why they couldn't put a boss at the end of every world though. (And not just Bowser Jr. all the time.)
I too beat it. I haven't one shotted so many levels in a Mario game since Mario is Missing. Only died on two levels in the last area (only because I didn't know what was going on), and one shotted the final only (so far) 'five star difficulty' level with no issues. The game is ridiculously easy with the majority of deaths coming from distraction or wtf was that(?). The player is OP as heck. The game oozed charm, and graphically was the best Mario to date without question. I absolutely loved the music areas. Felt like an ode to Rayman. While I didn't enjoy the journey to end game as much as the first 4 or NSMBU, I did enjoy it. At the start of the final boss battle all I could think of was when is the Metallica guitar riff coming in (very cool). I hope they can find the balance between old and new in the next installment as there was a lot of goodness there. This game felt like it was made by people who love the series, and not just a business decision. For that it was a great success. Definitely going to replay levels to see what I missed and collect more badges. Damn the loot box standees though. I have less than 30 and my last 5 have been doubles.
The actual final level is the real (and pretty much only) challenge in the game, just like Super Mario 3D World. Those devs that were hyping up the difficulty in interviews before the release, idk what they were smoking. there's no way anyone that has worked on the Mario games since the 80s should be struggling at all with SMB Wonder. Still an awesome game though, and my favorite of the 2D ones. I'm really glad they didn't lock 100% completion behind making you complete the game with every character like they did in SM3DW. I felt like that was a cheap way to artificially extend the game's length.
I haven't played as much as I would like because I've been very busy. So far, it's very easy. The only time I have died is when I miss something and then die on purpose so I can go back. I turned the flower voices off IMMEDIATELY. They annoy the crap out of me. I also thought the same thing about the wonder seeds as someone else mentioned...I feel like we're losing the regular level. If you go back and play them without activating the wonder seed, most levels are very boring.
Something to keep in mind with difficulty...most of us have been playing Mario games (and other 2D platformers) for 30+ years now, and we've gotten pretty darn good at them. Do any of y'all go back and re-play older Mario games often like I do? I don't know about the rest of you, but I breeze through all of them now. I could 100% SMB3 and SMW right now and die like 1-2 times max. It wasn't like that when I was a kid though, I died in those games...a lot. Newer Mario games may be easier, but not by much. We're just really good at these kinds of games now. It does help that they've perfected the controls. A lot of the difficulty with SMB1 came from the crappy controls. SMB3 and SMW weren't perfect either and still had some minor issues. Also, newer abilities like the wall jump and the mid-air twirl thing, can help save you from a deadly situation.
So yeah, it would be nice to have a harder Mario game, but it would make the game inaccessible to young/newer players. One of the things I love about Mario Maker is that people can make some truly challenging levels there. Not the BS enemy spam type levels. I'm talking about levels with platforming that is legitimately hard. I love playing those types of levels! I'm fine with Mario Maker being my source of challenging Mario levels, and the regular Mario games made by Nintendo are a more casual, chill experience for everyone.
I read online that Mario Wonder gives green check marks if you have fully completed a level. I must be missing something because I don't have any yet, although I know I have 100% on some levels. Do they show up after you beat the game or something?
On a few levels, I have all wonder seeds, all purple 10 coins, all secret exits, and top of the flagpole. What am I missing?

Are you sure you're looking in the right place for it? It's kind of in the background of the screen that shows if you got all of the purple coins and the flagpole. Usually, if you seem to have everything but still don't have the check, the most likely culprit is a missing secret exit.
Oh I see it now. I noticed it on one of the challenges with only one seed. The wonder seeds block the check mark. I have one on almost every level I've played.
I noticed input lag on Sega Genesis Classics and the Mega Man X Collection. About the only times it was noticeable for me. It's never been a problem with the Psikyo games, but I also didn't play the original versions.

Thanks! I was debating doing that anyways, so now I have some motivation. I was worried the I had one shotted the "hardest" level. Glad that's not the case.
To everyone calling this the greatest 2D Mario since SMW, I'm going to have to disagree. I know 3D Works is technically 3D, but I prefer that so much more to this. Even comparing it to NSMBU, I think I prefer U. Yes, this is much more varied, and I appreciate the creativity, but I'm very underwhelmed so far. It's all just a little too simple for me.
> I agree there is TONS of crap. But there are some good intelligent thoughtful gaming

I know what to avoid. I avoid every channel that relies heavily on YouTube face for views. There are plenty of great content creators out there who don't.
And when it comes to video game related content there are usually dozens of other channels doing the exact same thing. Very few gaming youtubers have a truly unique brand identity because success tends to breed copycats. (Just look at all the people who play bad games and want to be AVGN for example.)
I don't even mind them putting their face on the thumbnail. But they can do it without extreme face contorting ridiculousness.

I was really looking forward to this game, but I had something come up a day or two before release, and I haven't been able to pick it up. That said I have watched a decent amount of the game, and now I feel a little underwhelmed. The level design looks extremely varied, but otherwise looks a bit bland; most of the level gimmicks come off as fun, but I think most of the platforming in the levels feel secondary to the gimmicks, and I noticed a lot of empty space without enemies or hazards in the levels.
Of course I may feel differently once I play the game, but I'm definitely less interested than I was. Also, just to be clear I'm not saying I think the game looks bad, I just don't think the game looks as great as I expected it to.
Personally Wonder is a fantastic game that is just fun to play. It's the first Mario game that my son and I have been able to play co-op without there being too much hassle. We stick to the 2 star or lower difficulty levels for now, but I've enjoyed replaying levels and reexperiencing things and looking for things that we didn't see last time.
If you're playing it solo, I'm sure the experience is much different. The great thing about Wonder is that they added something new for people to enjoy that will hopefully open up Mario to new experiences for decades to come.
My kids have come back around to it and are enjoying it. Going back to unlock the special world shows much of the issues which I and others have stated. I plan on getting all 10 coins, wonder seeds, top of the flag poles and secret exits. Nuts to the standees, I haven't used 1 yet.
As I stated it's a great start to a new 2d Mario. It took the "New" series 4 games to get 1 that held up to the original 4 imo.

I like SM3DW better than Wonder too, but like you said, that one is 3D. I was only comparing Wonder to the other 2D Mario games. NSMBU was very solid, but what holds it back in my mind is how similar it was to the 3 games preceding it. They're all so similar, it just felt like the same thing over and over but with new power-ups and levels. Wonder actually tries a bunch of new things and just feels very unique compared to the NSMB games.
I like SM3DL better, but that's because at that time, the 3D effect was so impressive and well done. Looking back at it, it still has incredible level design and fun quick levels. 3D world was a step down IMO.
3D World is one of my favorite Mario games. I know it isn't very creative, but I also highly enjoyed NSMBU, and thought it was quite a bit better than any of the other NSMB games.
I think Wonder does a great job of capturing some of that creativity with the one-off stuff they do with the wonder flowers, but I think there's still a lot of the same old 2D Mario tropes filling in between those.
Though you can't play as Daisy in Galaxy... maybe she needs her own game. I would buy Super Daisy Galaxy
Who was mister list man, theJaw? Should ask people to post their lists (or tiers) for mainline Mario. Tiers makes the most sense imo, and use whatever criteria you want (favorite, best, historic, nostalgia, etc). (Copied the list from a website, not sure why there are two dates for 3 and World. I don't think they were released that far apart in Japan/USA.)

Super Mario 3D Land was so good. I didn't like Super Mario 3D World as much. I still enjoyed it and I'm not saying it was a bad game at all, but for a while it was my least favorite 3D Mario (that is until they released Super Mario 3D All-stars and I revisited SM64 and Sunshine and saw how poorly they aged).
I think what disappointed me was the emphasis on co-op and in 2013 they still didn't think there should have been an option for it to be online. I'm a huge fan of co-op games, but the people I enjoy playing them with the most are all over the world, making local co-op play impossible. In addition to that, nothing really felt like the game was designed for co-op, and by that I mean every collectible could be reached in single player, you never needed anyone else's help to get them, nor were there any secret levels that could only be accessed in co-op. Like the NSMB games it was built first as a standard single player Mario title, co-op was just an option to make things more hectic. I'm fine with that, but I feel Sackboy did co-op better.
I still have not completed Champions Road and I need to do that one of these days. Maybe I'll make that one of my gaming goals of 2024. I've spent many hours on difficult levels in Super Mario Maker, sometimes over an hour on each level failing and failing and failing some more, because I was determined not to give up until I complete them, I don't know why I never felt the same desire to complete this one level, but I need to finally do it.
Edit: This is mostly based on how much I enjoy them today, not how good they were for their time. Nostalgia definitely factors in though.
2D Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988, 1990) Super Mario World (1990, 1991) Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023) New Super Mario Bros. U (2012) --- New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009) New Super Mario Bros. 2 (2012) New Super Mario Bros. (2006) --- Super Mario Bros. (1985) Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (1986) Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA, 1988) Super Mario Land (1989) --- Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (1992)
I'm very tempted to put Wonder first. But, I don't think that would be fair, since I haven't even completed the game yet. All 4 games in the top tier are very close, as are the 3 in the middle tier. I enjoy all of the games in the 3rd tier, but each has a major shortcoming that holds it back (SMB1 and SMB:LL have awful controls, SML is too short, and SMB2 just has an oddness to it that I don't quite like). I'm not much of a fan of 6 Golden Coins at all. I know people will hate me for that, but I just don't like the style of that game.
3D Super Mario 3D World (2013) Super Mario Odyssey (2017) Super Mario Galaxy (2007) Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) --- Super Mario 64 (1996) Super Mario 3D Land (2011) Bowser's Fury (2021) --- Super Mario Sunshine (2002)
All 4 games in my top tier are EXTREMELY close. I could honestly see ranking any one of them as my #1. I tend to put 3D World and Odyssey at the top, and a lot of that is due to the huge amount of nostalgia I have from playing them with my kids when they were little. Bowser's Fury could be higher, but it's too short. I've tried Sunshine two different times in my life and have not been able to get into it. I plan to give it one more chance, on the Switch. I hope to at least be able to finish it this time, but I doubt it's going to improve enough that I rank it higher than any of the other 3D games.
I like this. My list is very similar to KCPenguins' list.
Cape Tier SMB 1 SMB 3 Super Mario World Super Mario Galaxy Super Mario Galaxy 2 Super Mario 3D World New Super Mario Bros U & Luigi U Super Mario Odyssey
Tanooki Tier Bowser's Fury Super Mario Sunshine NSMB Wii Super Mario 3D Land
Helicopter Hat Tier SMB2 Mario 64 NSMB Super Mario Wonder (maybe this moves up by the time I'm done, but I'm very unimpressed as of now) Super Mario Land 2
Frog Suit on a Non-Water Level Tier NSMB2 Super Mario Land SMB The Lost Levels
Think this is mine. It could all change except for my #1.
Super Mario World (1990, 1991) Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988, 1990) Super Mario Sunshine (2002) Super Mario Galaxy (2007) Super Mario Bros. The game was designed for 3D. And when Nintendo designs something specifically for some gimmick, their magic shines. I felt like I was looking into a tiny little 3D soapbox. Those water levels especially. The 3D is super important for that game especially. It still works as a great mario game without it. But the 3D effect brings it to masterpiece level, IMO. Deifnitely a reason to not just emulate the game, you need a 3DS to experience it.

I felt the little trick rooms were stupid in 3d land. The ones where the camera angle was set so that if you were using 3D, you could see thst a platform was out front correctly, but if you were in 2d mode it blended in with the platforms in the background. Like Nintendo going SEE? SEE? THIS INCREDIBLE GAMEPLAY POSSIBLE ON ONE OF THOSE CRAPTY 2D SYSTEMS!
Except those rooms weren't incredible gameplay, they were little gotcha gimmicks for Nintendo to pat themselves on the back about how clever they were.
That to me was the epitome of the 3D experience on 3DS. Little "that was kind of a neat effect" moments followed immediately by turning the 3D slider off again because the games played better without it.
There's a reason so many late games simply left the 3D aspect out entirely. 99% of the time it didn't really affect gameplay, and of the few times it did, it almost always felt like a cheap gimmick.
For the record, I like 3D land a lot. Just not the 3D gimmick.
> the reason late games were not 3D is laziness. Whatever I'm not gonna agree with
> your take. I absolutely love 3D.
You can call it laziness. I will call it developers realizing 3D was not really a selling point for the vast majority of 3DS owners. Why put the effort into something nobody cares about?
Even Nintendo stopped using it on a number of their releases.
> I understand opinions, but I'm curious why Super Mario Land (1989) over Super Mario

I actually like SML quite a bit, and it would be rated higher if it weren't so short. The reason I like it is because it takes place away from the mushroom kingdom and features unique enemies and landscapes. This is something they need to explore much more in the 2D games. Wonder takes places in a new kingdom, and does have new enemies, but let's face it, it still looks like the mushroom kingdom.
As for SML2, idk, I just don't like it. I don't like the graphics, but mainly, I don't like the non-linear level design.
Looks pretty solid. I'm super bummed that after 6 waves, they still haven't added N64 Wario Stadium. It's the only MK64 track that hasn't been remade in a newer MK game.

Wii Daisy Circuit was previously announced in a Nintendo Direct. On top of that, the latest wave includes Wii Rainbow Road, Tour Madrid Drive, GCK DK Mountain, Piranha Plant Cove, SNES Bowser Castle 3, Tour Rome Avanti, and 3DS Rosalina’s Ice World. Also don’t forget that Funky Kong from Mario Kart Wii plus Pauline and Peachette
Hard to believe that we're still talking about a nearly-10 year old game. It's cool to see this kind of support for so long but at least for me personally I've had my fill and have been ready for MK9 and something fresh for a few years now.

Absolutely. I was originally on the "this DLC makes more sense than a new game because the game has already sold so many copies" side, and then I went ahead and paid for the Booster Course Pass on day one but really I have barely played it since the first batch of tracks dropped. I feel like it's a fresh coat of paint to cover up the "we've been playing this game for so long now, how about something new?" and maybe once the final tracks drop I'll play it more, but I'm really ready for a new entry in the series with some new mechanics to change things up.
For years I've been hoping they'd do a "Mario Kart Ultimate" type thing like they did with Super Smash Bros., with all characters and tracks from the series' history. This is probably the closest we'll get to it now.
Alien Hominid has a sequel that just released yesterday, and alongside it they remastered the original game too. The original game already looked good in SD on GameCube and the little GBA screen, I'm sure it looks great now. They bundled them together for $25 (it would be $32 to buy them separately) and since the sequel has online co-op for up to 4 players I kinda wanna check it out. No reviews on Metacritic yet though. https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/alien-h...
I wonder why they went with blue and red in the Super Mario Party bundle. It was originally released with green and yellow. Are they just not selling as many systems with blue and red bundled?
I was browsing the eShop and came across this game called Air Twister that reminded me of Space Harrier, one of my childhood favorites. Turns out it is from Yu Suzuki and is kind of a spiritual successor to that, and now I might have to check it out. It releases on Friday. Not sure I want to drop $25 on it, but I've spent much more on worse games.
If it's fun I'm interested, but man it looks really, really rough. This is one of their highlighted screenshots on their site...what is even happening with these reflections?
I watched a review. The soundtrack is all progrock which is kinda weird. But I still wanna play it. I've put it in my Steam wishlist and will wait for a sale or see if it eventually ends up in a Humble Bundle.
> True. They could have done something with the Smash Bros dock, like they did previously.
Think they went cheap on the dock cause it comes with the game and 3 months. Still at normal MSRP OLED model. Been better if it didnt come with the 3 months and came with the full game + all the DLC
Avi Arad does not inspire hope. Save for a few bangers under his belt, the dude is responsible for some truly awful crap. The Sony Spider-man villain spin off movies, for example.
Let Ninty learn once again. They'll do a live action Nintendo game related movie, it'll fail terribly, then they'll go into hiatus and exile for 20 years then come back with a CGI Zelda flick and then all will be right in the world.
I don't think N will venture past a PG rating so live action is an odd choice.
An "elf" on an adventure to save a girl...based on a series where there is mostly no voicework, not a lot of repeat characters, and no real romance...is going to need to take a lot of liberties to make work. And that embellishment I think is going to be a problem for such a conservative IP owner. They will have to play up the couple/love angle to make a live-action save-the-princess movie work but we've never seen these 2 characters ever be intimate and actually lovey-dovey.
Uncharted had 6 highly-narrative games to work with and it was a bit drab and not cast well. Assassins Creed had an unlimited amount of world building to use but was a total downer and slog. Zelda has even less material to work with.
I have a feeling the Zelda movies gonna be some sort of weird "modern take" outlandish comedy of Zelda. Main reason? Cheap. If they did full fantasy they'd have to spend tons on location filming, beautiful elaborate fantasy costumes, seriously good actors, etc. . They don't want to spend the money or effort in the vein of Lord of the Rings.
There have been rumors for months about a Zelda announcement not related to TotK, and there have been rampant theories about there being an OoT remake being announced and released in the near future. In guessing this was the rumored announcement and the OoT remake isn't happening. I actually expected this. I am optimistic after the Mario Bros movie, but disappointed if this is the announcement.

I'd be fine with this if it wasn't Sony. I hope Nintendo learned from Marvel's mistake and didn't give them a "just keep making crapty movies every few years, and you can keep the license" contract.
It's one thing with the CEO of Illumination being co-producer on the Mario Bros movie... he clearly has a good track record with animated kids movies. Arad being co-producer on Zelda is just a painful possibility.
He's had some major hits, but most of those were due to him placing great creators in charge and letting them have sole creative freedom. I'll always appreciate him for the Spider-verse movies and whatnot. But his track record is far more "awful" than good, so I'm worried. Hopefully Miyamoto made creative control a requirement of the partnership or something like that.
Some of the wording was updated recently. Is this Nintendo's subtle way of saying the next console will have backwards compatibility? I sure hope so. image
I nabbed a brand new sealed baten kaitos for $60. Was pretty surprised it wasn't sniped at the end. It has a little bit of scuff/scrape damage on the black plastic corners but it is nothing for me. That perhaps scared off the sealed only collectors.
I would expect it to be similar to what is happening with the PS4/5. The vintage and retro (not synonyms) stuff largely comes to PS4 still but can be played on PS5, while the stuff that needs more horsepower skips the PS4.
Eh, imo the best we can hope for is backwards compatibility physical and NSO carrying over at a higher yearly rate. Even that is being optimistic Sadly as I can see a fee per game to "upgrade" to Switch 2.
The only hard board I came across in Mario Wonder was the Final Final badge board. I lost an unacceptable amount of lives. The thing is, it was probably the first time I ever thought a Mario level was unfair.
I didn't mind the difficulty of Wonder too much, either. There were actually a couple levels where I died quite a few times -- but not so many that it got frustrating. I'm not looking for Cuphead here haha. Wonder pretty much nailed what I want from a Mario game -- the main game is full of levels that are more purely fun than difficult until the later stages where they get a tiny bit harder, and then some "special world" with more unique, difficult levels. Wonder went a step further and added shorter challenge and badge levels throughout the whole thing, which was a cool way to keep things fresh.
My only complaint is probably that it's too short... but that's really my complaint for any Mario game at this point. It being my #1 gaming franchise, I could always go for "more" whenever a new Mario game comes out.
>> Finally grabbed it. Who knows when I'll actually play it.
> $15 for that? Wow. Is it good? Though I really shouldn't buy any more switch games.
> Backlog. I've been pretty good this year.
Is it good? Good question because I've never been so torn on a game. There is a demo on the eShop so check it out. I've played through the demo twice and I hate the combat so much. Trying to add the strategy from FE games to a musou game just doesn't work. But it could just be that it hasn't clicked for me yet. All that said, I love characters, the new support conversations and the fact that you MC is actually voiced this time around. I still have my copy and I don't know if I'm going to crack it open and give it a proper try or if I'm going to sell/trade it.
I played this one for a few hours. Definitely a fun beat-em-up with some unique mechanics. (Hard to explain but just look at some reviews. You can't see the full game on a single play through.)
Speaking of Amazon, my card was charged for Super Mario RPG. Forgot that I preordered and that it was so close. Another game I won't be playing for a while. Would be an entirely different story if I hadn't played the SNES version on Wii several years ago.
I'm about to beat Advanced Wars Black Hole Rising remake so I'm just about ready for SMRPG. I'll have to put off Xenoblade 3 until after I beat SMRPGmake.
I'm a little late here, but regarding the Zelda movie...I was actually thrilled to find out it would be live action. I think animation was the right call for the Mario movie, but I wasn't that interested in an animated Zelda movie. I would LOVE to see one in live action though. I know there's potential for it to be bad, but it could also be really good. Personally, just seeing a real-world interpretation of the characters, Hyrule, enemies, etc, is going to be so cool, and worth it to me.
I saw a few games in the Indie Direct that I may check out. I'll likely get them on Steam or PS5 instead though. A few of the ones I was most interested in were lumped in the sizzle-reel thing at the end. I would've rather have gotten more info and full trailers on them than some of the games they did focus on in the Direct, but it seems as an indie developer if you give the Switch version timed-exclusivity that will guarantee you a spot in the showcase part of the Direct.
> Finally grabbed it. Who knows when I'll actually play it.
Foolishly was only half-paying attention when you posted this and thought I ordered Three Houses for $15. I'm a doofus. I have a literal no interest in a Warriors game but it'll be here today haha
I'm not much interested in Warriors games either, which is why I only got it on sale. I played Three Houses at launch lol. For what it's worth, the FE games supposedly involve a little more strategy than other musou games. I mostly enjoyed Hyrule Warriors and Age of Calamity, but that was mainly due to the Zelda skin.
Anyone else getting Mario RPG today? Completely forgot about my preorder because I didn't know when the game dropped, but it's apparently going to be here today. I never played too deep into the original SNES game but have fond memories of starting it, and I love me a good old school Square RPG, so I'm looking forward to it.
The lady also had an Amazon gift card and surprised me with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for Switch, which will also be showing up at some point today. I friggin love the Toad levels in 3D World and always wanted Captain Toad but just never got around to pulling the trigger. Looks like I didn't have to do that myself haha
On top of Wonder, now getting Mario RPG and Captain Toad a few weeks later is really scratching my Mario fanboy itch.
The Super Mario RPG remake was made on the Unity engine, so starting in January doesn't that mean Nintendo will have to start paying Unity a percentage for each copy sold? I wonder if they are using that engine for the Luigi's Mansion 2 and Paper Mario TTYD remakes too and if this will make them move away from that engine in the future?

No. Unity walked that all the way back behind (now former) CEO and (still current) legendary buttpie John Riccitiello and firmly planted the boot to his behind.
Future versions of Unity will have a revenue sharing agreement baked in if people choose to upgrade, but it is either a fixed percentage of revenue (i think 2.5%) or the per install, but the version SMRPG was likely programmed on would not.
Nintendo is big enough that they could negotiate their own custom contract if they wanted anyway.
Indeed. I think most professional Unity users will at least be looking into other Middleware engines.
Unity's lost so much trust within the dev community a lot of folks will be finishing their current projects and never touching Unity again.
The only way Unity could convince people it won't pull a stunt like this again is to dissolve the for profit company and turn all assets over to a respected non-profit foundation.
But they can't do that because they have too much debt and investors don't just want everything to vanish.
Playing Captain Toad before I dive into Mario RPG.
I love puzzle boxes and I love the Mario vibe, so Captain Toad is directly up my alley. It's fantastic. I love that you get the level, then you get the "Pixel Toad" challenge which is almost like a little Where's Waldo (another thing I love) element thrown in there, on top of the collectible items for ultimate replayability. Just super fun, I love it.
I found some with plain designs instead of the garish and/or obviously unlicensed Nintendo images on them. So we'll see how that goes. Will save quite a bit of space at omgcon if I can bring 24 games in something the size of 1 or 2 actual game cases
> Mario RPG remake is pure nostalgic bliss! Loving it
Yeah for sure. I remember just welling up inside during the ending. I don't know if it was just the music, all of the characters in the parade. This game is so g damn charming. Can't wait to see the ending in the new style. I'm sure I'll get hit in the feels again.
Same. It's the only BF deal I've jumped on so far. Though Kirby Dream Land Deluxe at $29.99 was tempting. A lot of decent games on sale for around $20, so worth checking dekudeals if anyone is looking for anything. (Super Bomberman R 2, Afterimage, Moonscars, Ghost Song, Sonic Origins Plus..just to name a few that I've seen.)
Now I'm just waiting to see if Amazon or Best Buy will price match GS at $9.99 for Everybody's 1-2-Switch. (Shipping ruins any GameStop deals, in addition to everything else lol.)
Is there a good reason Mario’s victory pose is now a tip of the hat? Was a spin and peace sign too aggressive or something? He looks like a fudging trash can now. What else did they change
This is most definitely my #1 hyped RPG of 2024. It's my dream game, ogre battle is revived from the dead (spiritual sequel or no, it's f'n ogre battle bois)
Did anyone else here get the new WarioWare game on switch? I got it and have been playing a ton of it but I haven't really seen any discussion on it anywhere online.
13 Sentinels, Dragon's Crown, Odin Sphere...I was thinking of which to recommend to someone unfamiliar with Vanillaware, but you can't go wrong with any of them. I just got GrimGrimoire in today. I've only played the demo for that one and never played the PS2 version. I'll probably start that after I finish Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails.

I found the previous WarioWare game very disappointing, and I quit playing it as soon as I finished it. I did not like the way the game felt, or the focus on characters replacing the gameplay styles.
WarioWare Move It looks like more of a return to previous games to me, and actually really reminds me of Smooth Moves, which is one of my favorites.
Yeah WarioWare Get It Together is the worst game in the series. You interact with the microgames by moving a character around, rather than the traditional WarioWare style, and it just doesn't work well.
Move It! is definitely the most similar to Smooth Moves, though it's quite a bit more crazy than Smooth Moves. The motion controls are a bit finnicky, and it's very close to being an exercise game, but overall I've really been enjoying it.

I think Snapped is worse, assuming you even count it, but I definitely thought Get It Together was the most disappointing.
That sounds cool. I haven't seen a lot of it, but what I've seen looks great. I'm looking forward to playing it, but I'll probably have to wait until January/February to pick it up.
