League Overview:
Welcome to Year 7 of the GameTZ Fantasy Gaming League! This is basically fantasy football with games. Each person picks 10 games and those 10 games make up your "team" for the year. The OpenCritic scores for your 10 games are tallied up at the end of the year to determine your total. Highest overall score wins. You also get 2 alternate picks (these should be safe choices) just in case one of your picks gets delayed into 2025. So if you shoot for the moon with a game like Marvel's Wolverine and it gets pushed into 2025, one of your alternates takes its place and you don't end up with 0 points for that game. The goal is to pick games that you think have a very good chance of releasing in 2024. Don't YOLO your way into a bunch of 0s lol.
The Rules: 1. No DLC or Expansions 2. No Ports or Remasters (full remakes are allowed) 3. Alternate picks can only replace games delayed into 2025. They cannot be used to replace games in your top 10 that review poorly.
The Prizes: 1st Place: A $100 Amazon Gift Card 2nd Place: A $20 Amazon Gift Card 3rd Place: A $10 Amazon Gift Card
Done and done! I left off 2 that I wasn’t sure about even coming out in 2024, those being Avowed and Vampires the Masquerade Bloodlines 2 but watch 2024 will be the year that Vampires decides to release. 😑
@Heavyd814life I have a couple of questions before I submit my list. Where do we stand on Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door? I'm seeing more places refer to them as remasters than remakes, so they wouldn't count, right? I also am leaning more towards the remaster side, I think Switch's last hurrah were TotK, Pikmin 4 and SMB Wonder and from now everything else will be something they can just make a quick buck off of until the next console. But I just want to be sure before I officially exclude them.

Yeah, Nintendo games can be tough sometimes because they are so inconsistent with the way they title their projects. The wiki pages I've checked have both Mario vs Donkey Kong and Paper Mario as remakes and Luigi's Mansion 2 HD as a remaster so I think we should just go with that
Lol just shoot me a pm if you want to make any changes. Still plenty of time to reconsider. I can send you your list and you just let me know what you want to swap in.
Looking up multiple YouTubers' "2024 games I'm looking forward to" videos, it seems like 2023 is going to be a tough act to follow. There's only a few games (announced so far) I'd be excited about. I'm going to take a few risks on my list instead of just playing it safe. I put 4 or 5 games that I'd be surprised if they appear on anyone else's list. I might end up regretting that, but oh well.
I just put what I know for sure is coming out in 2024 for like 75% of my list whether they do good or not. I rather take the risk of potentially lower scores vs no scores at all if a game that doesn’t have a firm release date or window ends up not coming out next year.
Dang now I kinda wanna redo my list and add it but it’s ok I’ll wing it with what I have and curse myself out later when Silksong launches in April 2024 with a 93 meta score from 38 critics.
>> Submitted my list. Round 5! A bit more confident in my list this year than previous

> Silksong releasing 2024 confirmed
lmao with my luck, that'll be the case. Release date is still "TBA" on wikipedia and Steam, so I'm just gonna assume that game isn't real until it actually comes out in 3024.
I'm waiting for all the 'Upcoming in 2024' articles that most press websites have before submitting my picks. I can't even think of 5 games i'm excited for after this amazing year.
I forget how we handle early access. Even if there are reviews we don't count it until it fully releases right? I want to put The Day Before on my list.

Best business model in the world. 1. Work on a game for 6 years with unpaid interns. 2. Release it to early access. 3. Four days later close down the company and shut the servers off for the game, prompting steam to remove it. 4. Profit???
Saw this wonder reddit post about it today as well:
There's a lot of lore to it (a few years) so I may miss bits out.
game was announced and became the most wishlistsed game on steam ever. Meant to be an open world MMO zombie survival game. Graphics were amazing, gameplay looked solid, it looked too good to be true (foreshadowing)
Fntastic accused of faking gameplay and using vertical slices to advertise on their trailers. They deny this
multiple plagerism allegations in the trailers (copying COD trailers and others)
not paying most staff and having "volunteers" instead of employees
one point said they had more news about the game, did a huge countdown then it was a bait and switch just to promote their new unrelated mobile app
multiple delays any time it was near release (like 5 delays?)
taken down from steam due to legal battle over their name
turned out they forgot to trademark the name and someone else used it
staff spoke with the media saying it was a super toxic workplace and terribly managed and saying they've been told to just copy other games
accusations of just being an asset flip game (turned out most of the game was from a £300 assistant pack on Unreal store) Fntastic deny this. Simply looking at the asset pack proves it.
think they got into crap with Nvidia who were sponsoring them at one point, after people thought the game was fake
-the devs are knows for releasing broken EA games and just abandoning them
a couple of days before launch they tweet that the game isn't a scam or an asset flip.
game comes out and its a scam and an asset flip. Its not the Open World MMO promised, its an extraction shooter
Many bugs, barely works, basically no zombies, area is tiny
-Fntastic delete old vids from youtube which showed MUCH better graphics and different gameplay, in an attempt to hide what they said prior.
Game gets Overwhelmingly Negative steam reviews.
-4 days after The Day Before releases, Fntastic say they're closing the studio and are abandoning the game.
This is years of lore and I've probably forgot some bits
I think two of my games will not make it this year, but my alternatives should review well enough. Taking a BIG risk on my first alternate, but I think its going to review really well despite the internet hate. (I also think it could bomb hard haha)
Happy New Year, you beautiful people! Just a quick reminder that signups close in 2 weeks. Plenty of time, but I wanted to send out a quick reminder. Also if you've already submitted your list and would like to make changes before the deadline, just shoot me a PM and I can make those changes for you.

I wondered that as well, but ultimately just decided not to put it on my list. (Btw, after playing the demo it appears that Recollection will simply have you play them in order like one game. I didn't even see a greyed out selection for the sequel.)
I tried something different this time and guessed a game not announced. (A new 3D Mario.) I think my alternates were safe enough guesses.

Yeah, it's being considered a remake because apparently they've made a bunch of changes to it (adding voice acting, new scenes etc) so yeah it's eligible.
> Got my list down to 20 or so games, just need to make the final cuts.
Damn! This was one of the easier years for me. I didn't really overthink it and I had my list done in less than an hour. I went back and forth between 2 games for my final pick, though. Decided in the end to go with the game I think reviewers will like instead of the game I'm personally way more interested in.

It's mostly because I like to have weird and lesser known picks in there but don't want to completely hamstring my list. Also can't decide if this is the year I add Silksong lol
Submitted but there were like 10 more games I wanted to put in the 9-12 spots xD Also, just couldn't put Silksong on the list this year, but I do got a spicy one.
I was going to edit my list again this year. As I've done every year after submitting. But then decided I wont this year. I'll just live and die by early selections. It'll be more fun that way. I think I should be fine and end up with 10 rated picks. Even though a couple of them are dicey.
Wow, didn't realize the embargo for this one lifted so early. Looks like reviews drop tomorrow. An early embargo like this is typically a good sign, but nothing about the footage I saw wowed me so I left it off my list.
EDIT: It's on 7 of the 23 lists so far so looking forward to seeing how it reviews.
Yeah I left it off my list because I didn’t really look into it much. Didn’t know it was the same team that made Raymon legends. Looks cool. I’m thinking it could score high 80s
> I think at this point if you haven't chosen it for your list, it should be off limits

Oh yeah definitely, but I think everyone knows that. @mattyg00013 submitted his list last night so 8 people have it on their lists. Great start for sure!
I have it on my list and yeah, 87 is way better than I expected the new PoP to land in at. I was anticipating high 70's-80. I mean I'm happy to see a return to form for the series indeed. It's been a damn long time coming. I just hope that Ubi sees how hungry folks are for traditional action/adventure games without needing a massive open world sandbox complete with live service elements galore and continues to keep games like this coming our way.
I'm less surprised (though still a bit). Looking at the trailers it seems to play a lot like those indie games that everyone loves so much. To see that gameplay with Ubi production values is pretty cool. I was expecting 80ish but no more than 85
Hey guys, remember that we are using OpenCritic this year. So PoP is currently at 86 from 79 reviews. Definitely didn’t see this coming, either. It wasn’t even on my radar when I was putting my list together.
"Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is one of the finest metroidvanias" "Prince of Persia boldly reinvents itself as a metroidvania" "If you are a fan of Metroidvania-style games"
I guess people don't know that PoP started like this in the late 80s, the same time Metroid and Castlevania came out. Its just returning to its roots. Calling it a metroidvania bothers me immensely for some reason. I know that is irrational. And people use that term as a genre of games even though there already is one for it. And they shouldn't. Its the same when people trying to calling any 3rd person action rpg a souls-likes, even when it doesn't have souls-like mechanics. Just stop it. Calling a game with the same history by a different games name as the genre it exists in to me is just insulting for no reason.
Your hatred of people overusing metroidvania/soulslike seems to be equal to my hatred of people referring to console generations by number instead of by system.
I don't want to memorize a chart, and the numbers get muddy when you factor in portables, and staggered releases etc.
Everyone understands if you just say PS2 era or Genesis era etc. There is zero confusion and it takes no longer to say or type that out.
> Back to 87 now on Opencritic from 90 reviews. Dang. Does Opencritic have user reviews
> too? Sometimes I like to compare both side by side.
Nah, I don't believe they do. Not really a fan of the user reviews on Metacritic, personally. It feels like it's mostly just fanboys and trolls propping up or bashing a game.
There wasn't much to the demo, but I'm looking forward to playing Lost Crown. I kinda wish it wasn't Ubisoft because I know it's going to be heavily discounted in a month or two. So no point in getting it at launch.
I did actually get Fenyx Rising at launch and didn't regret it, even after seeing how cheap it got later. Still haven't gotten any of the DLC, which is also frequently on sale.
Wanted to join this year. Took me awhile to put together, but just submitted my list earlier today. Looking forward to see what gaming in 2024 brings us.
My gut Is telling me to swap out the suicide squad game with something else but I’m such a hard-core rocksteady fan that I’m just going to go down with that ship.
I'm out this season. Tried using chat GPT to come up with a list but it was either picking everything that was coming out in the next 3 months or games from last year.
Okay guys, OP is up to date and we're off! We've got 6 people on the board already with Prince of Persia which is still at 87 on OpenCritic. I've got the release dates for upcoming games in the OP and I can't believe how packed Q1 is this year. I wonder if some games will get pushed so they don't get swallowed up.
Putting my list together this year was easier than most years. Really wanted to get Granblue in there because it's probably my most anticipated game of the year alongside Dragon's Dogma 2, but I chickened out. I also totally forget about Metaphor: ReFantazio when putting my list together, but I'm happy with my list overall. A ton of really good lists this year. A few people took a chance on Nintendo announcing a Mario or Kirby game. A few brave souls have Suicide Squad on their list. And some people went back to the well with Silksong which I still don't believe is a real game. Should be another great year. Good luck, everyone!
I actually had it on my submitted list. Trailer looked good. Gameplay looked really good. I thought it was a good pick. But I was told that I had to repick because apparently scores had been out already when I submitted it. Although I hadn't known that, that's a fair request. I thought the game hadn't released yet and therefore scores weren't out. Forgot about the early scorers like YouTubers, gaming sites, etc, who play the games early. I guess it's just part of the learning process.
Would have been great to have such a high number on my list already at the start, but hey what can you do? I'm having fun already, so that's what's most important.
Wow, had to take my mom to the airport and totally forgot about my list, lol. That's what happens when you wait until the last hour to do things. Good luck everyone!
I respect TF out of those fine few folks who put Metroid Prime 4 on their lists. I wish I was so brazen to do so and add it to mine. If it ends up popping out before the years end I won’t even be mad I didnt pick it on mine. I’ll be impressed.
>> Sports Story would like to remind you that lightning doesn't always strike twice.
>>
>>
> ? (Just curious what you mean)
I think he means Golf Story was great, one of the first true indie gems in the Switch eShop. The developer followed up with Sports Story, and it had years of delays and the developer not telling us anything about it, and then when it finally released it was a mess filled with bugs.
As far as I know most of the bugs have been patched by now, but nobody is going to review your game twice, so those mediocre review scores Sports Story got at launch are forever going to be attached to it even if it is a better game now because you only get one chance to make a first impression (No Man's Sky is a perfect example of a game that is better now than the Metacritic score would lead you to believe).
Yeah, I assumed it was about Silksong because the developer isn't known for anything else besides Hollow Knight, just like the Sports Story dev wasn't known for anything other than Golf Story. Basically saying just because one game was a big success doesn't guarantee the follow up will be, even when they've had years to work on it.

Funny you should say that. I initially put silksong on my list and Star Wars outlaws as one of my backups, so you could say I had Silksong in favor of Star Wars Outlaws. But I then had to remove Prince of Persia because I unknowingly made my submission after scores for Prince had been posted. So Star Wars Outlaws then made it to the list.

Even though it was Ubisoft, something about the gameplay trailer that I watched made it look very good to me. I'm not saying that Ubisoft equals not good, but just something about the gameplay made me think "this will be great."
Yeah and I had no idea it was gonna be a metroidvania style game but those are welcome in my book. Especially if you’re gonna elevate and evolve the genre like they said the new PoP does.

That was my spicy pick It was that or Silksong and I picked the game we know even less about xD I picked that ZAU game over PoP and that may have been a mistake too. I also completely forgot about that Metaphor game
More crossover this year than in any previous year!
Last year I picked all games that hadn't even been announced. I got one with WarioWare Move It (and technically a second with MyArcade's new Tetris handheld but i dont think anyone reviewed that POS), and announcements for two more (Shantae and whatever the next Thunder Lotus game was).
Quite an impressive list! I shaved a lot off mine too. I should have kept the list going like you thought for the fantasy leagues in the years to come. Heh.
> Hopefully Hellbalde is a completed game and not another Microsoft "release it and
> fix it later" trend.
This is the only game on my list I am a *little* worried about. I think I let my love for Ninja Theory get the better of me here because I always forget that the first game was only like an 80 on Metacritic. But they are so talented and they've got that MS money this time around so hopefully the sequel is on a whole new level.
Hellblade 2 had some great previews, so I have high expectations. Then again, it drives nuts when websites give amazing previews and then kill it in review scores.
> I never can get straight what counts between remakes and remasters. Brothers Two
> Sons I totally figured didn't count. Same with Persona 3.
I'm still not sure how anyone has a hard time with this to be honest. Its always a point of contention in here. And I don't understand why.
Both of those are remakes. Which are allowed. Remasters are not. Remasters are lazy ports of the same exact game. A remake is a new game that is built from the ground up again in a new engine. Its usually basically the same game, but they make it all over again. Hence the term remake. Usually everything about the game is new aside from story and core mechanics. Meaning all new assets (graphics, sounds, animations, some times new game play mechanics and old bugs from the old version get fixed, because its a new engine) A remaster on the other hand is when they just "uprez" the graphics. Meaning its the same exact game in the same engine with all the same assets. There is nothing new about it. They just tweak the existing game and sell it again.
Its also usually fairly clear what the game is of the two based on what the developer calls it in marketing. If its a remake, they will go out of their way to get that across and call it a remake. And then go into detail about whats new in the new version of the game. Remasters, continuing with the lazy theme, just say remastered and they wont provide much more details than that until the game is about to release. And it usually just boils down to, now with remastered graphics.
I'm surprised how many people have Black Myth: Wukong on their list. I thought that was going to be an under radar game on here. I haven't really seen anything about it in over 2 years. So I thought I was being sneaky with picking that one.

Hmm I didn’t think it was under the radar at all. I feel like it gets tons of media attention. I had it on my list but took it off last minute and replaced it with hellblade 2. I just have a feeling it’s gonna get delayed. Hope it ends up good and releases this year though
I just recall watching the initial gameplay presentation on Black Myth a couple years back and when I saw you can morph into an ape I was like man this looks cool and went with my gut and added it to my list.
> I just recall watching the initial gameplay presentation on Black Myth a couple years

I just watched a bunch of gameplay of it. Looks good. As I was watching I thought that it reminded me of a certain Chinese story about a monkey king character. I actually own the book. And at the end of the gameplay, sure enough, it said that the game is based off of the story Journey to the West. (In it, the monkey character is named Sun Wu Kong, hence the title Wukong.)
I wish I knew what the singers were singing during the gameplay. Sounded nice. It was in Chinese.
Yeah it looks so good. Like weird but good. Reminds me of a culmination of some of the greatest action games of the past decade or so in one package. Some reminds me of Sekiro. Other parts remind me of Nioh. With some sprinkles of DMC in there too.
It's less confusion over the policy in the league but what the games actually are. From what I've seen Brothers and Persona seemed like straight up ports with better graphics. Not on the level of something like RE4 or FF7 which is pretty much a completely different game now.
Wukong looks great but the studio has some drama and I was getting some Atomic Heart type vibes from it. I hope it's awesome though. I grew up on the old Chinese Monkey King show - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K5lphymgSg and he's one of my favorite characters.

Yeah, we could debate whether one game is as much of a remake as another but if we did that then we'd never come to a consensus. The rules as is are pretty simple. As long as a game is billed as a remake, it counts.
I don't have much faith in my list. I did it very rushed at the last second just to get something in so that I could participate. I spent maybe 15-20 minutes tops. I knew very little about most of the games I was seeing on 2024 lists, and didn't have time to research each individual one to see how promising a 2024 release was, how good the game was looking to be, etc.
Also, I guess I've behind on my Nintendo rumors. I didn't realize there were rumors of a 3D Mario game dropping this year. I considered putting that on my list anyway, but decided to play it safer again. If I had known about the rumors though, I may have gone for it.

Idk I think you have a very solid list. The games you have that I don’t I had considered putting on my list too. Princess peach was a tough one. I really wanted to put it on my list because 1st party Nintendo games almost always review very well, but I wasn’t sure what I would swap it with. I think you have as good a shot as anyone.

Well that's good to know. I was just looking through everyone's lists and saw so many games that I either didn't consider at all, or knew nothing about so I was afraid to choose them.

I just looked at your list. Looks solid to me. Metal Gear Solid Delta, nice! I'm not sure if I even knew about that one. I remember reading awhile back that they were working on a Metal Gear Master collection (volume 1, consisting of 3 games, released in October. Volume 2 is upcoming). But I don't think I knew about Delta. Just looked it up. Seems it's a remake of Snake Eater. Very cool.

I agree with Shane. Really solid list! I think the only games I'd be a little worried about are the Konami games because you know, Konami. I just don't trust them. Snake Eater is one of my favorite games of all time so I'm hoping and praying they nail it. And it may be worth the risk because if they do nail it, it could review in the 90s.

I considered Princess Peach, but I'm not too optimistic with review scores. I'm guessing it will fall in the low 70s. It sounds like it will have tons of fun gameplay ideas that won't be fully fleshed out, and it'll be super easy. I hope I'm wrong.

>> No joke I would love a Mario VR if it was anything like astrobot VR

I haven’t played it since release but I remember just being happy while playing and having that simple joy that Mario games give you. VR is mostly first person games but astrobot is 3rd person but somehow is one of the best VR games of all time
Astro Bot: Rescue Mission gave me that "wow" factor that no game had since Super Mario 64. I have yet to play a 3D platformer in VR that is even half as good. And since you didn't have to worry about maneuvering the camera, I feel that helps make Astro Bot be something you can return to 20 years from now and it'll still be awesome, and not have aged as poorly as SM64 or Sunshine (or really most 3D platformers from that era). Every time Astro Bot gets brought up it makes me want to replay it again. It's rumored Sony is doing a State Of Play next month, and next month will also be the 1 year anniversary of PSVR2, I'm hoping a sequel is announced.
> I went for it :) if it doesn’t come out then I should be good with my backups
nice, i didnt know prince of persia was releasing so soon either, i had put it on my list not knowing reviews came out that day so i had to take it off. will def play it sometime

Metal Gear and Silent Hill. Silent Hill isn't even being developed internally at Konami. It is being developed by Blobber Team whose games all review in the 60s and 70s. But who knows, maybe they make a leap with this game.

I'd buy a PSVR2 if they announce a new Astro Bot game for it. Rescue Mission is the game that made me a believer in VR. It's legitimately one of the best games I played last gen. I do want to see the devs make a full fledged non VR 3D platformer, though. I think more people need to experience their games.
If Avowed is coming out this year I’ll partially kick myself. I had that on my list and bumped it cause we heard no word of it since its reveal a few years back.

I only put it on my list (as a backup) because I saw it as one of the games being shown for today’s showcase. It may still not come out this year, but I took a gamble lol
I guess I'm in the minority, but Avowed looks meh to me. But then again I thought The Outer Worlds looked meh as well but it reviewed well (mid 80s, I think).
Well not a full date, but they said this fall. Which means it could be delayed. And going by what they showed, it should be. Holy crap was that a generic lame ass looking game.

For me, and I think a lot of the hype around it, was because its a continuation of the Pillars of Eternity games. Set in the world with that lore and characters. But not a full continuation of those games story. But from what they just showed, I'll be shocked if it scores above a 78. I'm disappointed personally than I am for the score it will get. I want this to be good, as I loved the Pillars games.
This new Indy game looks awesome! Developed by Wolfenstein devs too. Troy Baker as Indy also. Coming 2024 it says. Had no idea it was coming so soon. I chose…poorly.
I almost added South Park Snow Day to my list (scheduled for March). Haven't played any of the games, but I heard good things about at least one of them.
Took it off at the last minute in favor of something else.
Yeah I’m cautious on Snow Day. It’s not Obsidian nor Ubi San Fran behind it so I’m treading lightly. I’m not sure how that game Blackout Club is but those devs are making Snow Day.
> South Park Snow Day is not the same developers as the most recent two South Park
> games.
Makes sense because it doesn't look anything like the last two games. Those games were great but they didn't score all that well if I remember (High 70si I think). Previews for the new game didn't sound too optimistic.
Yeah. I watched a preview while putting my list together and it looks like a budget game to me. It's even priced like one (it's $30). I don't see how it scores higher than 70, honestly. I wish they had just made a 3rd RPG one.
Thanks for the heads up, Talon. OP has been updated. HUGE score for Tekken 8. Loved the demo and can't wait to play through the story. I regret only having it as an alt.
Also great start for @SilverOwl with both Tekken and Prince of Persia!
Yeah I had no idea Tekken 8 was gonna be that good. Def wanna check it out now. Didn’t know it was gonna have such a robust lean into the story too. Sweet!
Nice! Can’t wait to play Infinite Wealth either and it’s another one that slipped my list. I’m losing this year’s game so hard haha especially when Suicide Squad drops next week to like 63 average critic scores.
9 days into the game. 3 games released. All but 6 players on the scoreboard already. Two games scored a 90 or higher (so far). Both on the same day. SilverOwl has all three games and has over 250 points in the first month, out to the early lead. And looking at his list, he could actually finish top 3 if not win the whole thing if some of those others score as expected. Pure madness.
We thought 2023 was a crazy year. 2024 said hold my beer.

Funny you mention Ryan because I was looking at his list as I updated the OP and his list makes me nervous lol. His list stood out to me the most because we have 7 of the same top 10 games, but he has Tekken and I don't so I feel like I'm already playing catch up. Not to mention everyone else who has started out strongly. It's going to be tough to win it this year.
I considered Like a Dragon: Infinite wealth for one of my picks, but other options won out. Like a Dragon seemed fun and funky to me, but I thought it had slightly cheap vibes, for lack of a better way to put it. When I was watching the trailer, I didn't think "woah." I thought "looks fun/funky/wacky." Which doesn't mean that it wouldn't score high (which it certainly already has). But other games when I saw them I thought "definitely going on the list." Infinite wealth just wasn't one of those definites to me.
But to be fair to the game itself, I didn't play any games in the series. So it was pure speculation, and not based on experience with the series.
> Wow big start for me as well. Hopefully my more oddball picks will carry me past

Dude you have an awesome list! I just always have a hard time putting my faith in indie games that don't have a hard release date. I would have had Mina the Hollower on my list for sure if I had any confidence it would come out this year. Game looks awesome and it's Yacht Club Games so you know they've got the pedigree to deliver a game that reviews in the 90s.

I think the best reviewed Yakuza game was Zero and that was in the mid 80s, I think. The mainline games are always solid, but they are usually in the 80-85 range. I figured it was a nice safe pick, but I didn't see 90 coming at all!
I just realized that Granblue Fantasy Relink and P3:R come about at the same time. But P3:R is on GP, so I guess I'll play that first. For some reason I thought Granblue came out in March.
I had it on my list because I think I wanted to believe rocksteady could somehow pull it off with their rep, but not looking so good. I’ll probably play it eventually because the story does seem interesting
Yeah I kept Suicide Squad on my list because I’m a devout fan of their work and of course absolute fool and am going down with that Rocksteady ship. Cue the Titanic violin music!
Can't believe it's been 9 years since Rocksteady's last game and THIS is what they've been working on. A co-op live service game that no one wanted. Maybe I'm wrong and it'll review and sell well, but it feels like Anthem, Avengers, Babylon's Fall etc all over again. Where a company that's good a creating single player games pivots to a live service game because they want to chase the hottest trend.
I blame Warner games division. I’m sure Rocksteady was like “We didn’t sign up for this!” They’re desperate to make all the money and forget about the quality of games that got them to where they are now in the first place. Such a shame when one of the most respected and greatest known developers of the last 15 years falls so far.

And anthem could have been absolutely amazing. Playing through that games story was actually a ton of fun. I think anthem next would have been great if not canceled

Anthem should have been an amazing game. It honestly deserved better. But it went through development hell. And the people working on it didn't quite understand what "end game content" meant.
Since this league has been running, has it ever happened that within someone's list more than two games weren't released that year, and that therefore the two backups didn't cover the non releases to make a full list of 10?
> Since this league has been running, has it ever happened that within someone's list

Yeah, it happens every year. Last year, 25 out of 33 people finished with a full list of 10. It was actually the best year we've had because the year before that, only 11 out of 32 finished with a full list of 10.
> Apparently, the review embargo for Granblue Fantasy: Relink lifts tomorrow night.
Nice! I think this may be my most anticipated game of 2024. Either this or Dragon's Dogma II. Looking forward to seeing how it reviews. My gut says low 80s.

I didn't check out the demo so I can go in blind (hopefully not a mistake). I haven't seen or read anything about it in a couple years. I just remember that Platinum games was dropped as the developer in 2019. And its had a complete graphic and combat overhaul because of this. And the only reason I'll be playing P3:R first is because I only have a 3 month sub of GP. Which expires at the end of Feb, and its on there day one. And since I'm iffy on all the changes to that I figured I'd use GP to play it first before buying it.
Did anybody pick Suicide Squad? There are reports that the early release was removed only an hour after release due to a pretty serious bug. All signs are pointing to an absolute disaster of a game.

Ah yes, the joys of an always online live service game.
From what I've read it auto completed the story for people and instantly threw them into end game content due to a server bug. Sounds like they were doing some pre-launch testing and forgot to change some settings back. Odd thing is that its still down from the sounds of it. So it might have been something more serious. I bet the people who paid the extra $30 for early access are pissed.

Who is paying an extra $30 for 3 days of early access? I wouldn't do that for Metroid Prime 4 or the next Zelda game. It's stupid content creators trying to get his for streaming a game early or making the first tutorial videos.

Yeah, remakes are allowed. Remasters and ports aren't. The lines can be a little blurry sometimes, but as long as a game is marketed as a remake then it's eligible.
Also just updated the OP with scores for Under Night In Birth II. It came out on the 24th but only has 3 reviews so far so no actual OpenCritic score so far. Not sure if/when more reviews will come in so I just averaged out the scores from the 3 reviews for now and added it to @BloodPuppetX list.

Depends on the amount, but probably no. I certainly wouldn't pay $30 for 3 days for any game. I am more excited for Metroid Prime 4 than any other game right now. I certainly wouldn't pay $30 to play it early.
I don't think most people are paying an extra $30 just to play it early. Those ultimate bundles with early access typically include several dlc items and other perks like bonus xp or something

Yeah, you don't just get early access typically for these high cost premium bundles. You usually get the first DLC for the game. And some in game items/cosmetics. And like a digital artbook or soundtrack. But this trend has really taken off and it seems every game does this now. Which means way more people actually pay for this stuff than we on here realize.
> Up to a 91 with 8 more now, nice! I was expecting high 80s for it. Looks like all
> the changes really landed with reviewers. Can't wait to play it.
I'm actually surprised only 12 of us have it on our lists. Felt like one of the few slam dunk picks this year. I was definitely a little worried after some of the changes you mentioned. Still not sure how I'll feel about them when I get around to playing it, but I'm going to go in with an open mind. Can't wait!
Just skimmed through the review. Very positive despite the score. Honestly reads more like an 8.5/10, tbh. Going to be interesting to see where reviewers land on this. Guess we'll know tomorrow.
Honestly, that review just made me not want to play the game. I had no idea this game was an online mmo style game. When did that change? That is not what this game was announced as back in 2016.

Oh no it's nothing like an online MMO. It has a proper 20 hours main story. You don't have to play online. It's just that it also has a Monster Hunter style component for the endgame after you're done with the main story where you can form parties, take on quests and then take on big bosses. I'd definitely recommend trying out the demo before buying it. I think this is a really accurate review. Everything they say pretty much mirrors what I experienced with the demo.
@Heavyd814life Yeah, I think going dark on this one didn't work out. I should download the demo tonight and see what it is. Not like I'll be playing it anytime soon. But I had this whole other idea in my head what the game was vs what apparently it is. All his comparisons to Genshin Impact, and talking about end game content is what made me think its an mmo style game.

Oof, that hurts a little bit. Would have been nice to have that 90. When I heard that Persona 3 was getting a remake, I wanted to add it to my list. I'd have been very surprised if it didn't do well. I'd expect at least an 85. I guess I could/should have just asked when I compiled my list.
Tekken and Like a Dragon I considered but then dropped in favor of other things. So can't feel bad about that. But Persona 3 was a real consideration. Thought I couldn't choose it. Oh well. You learn through experience.

It's coming up as 80 from 26 reviews for me. I'll give it an hour or two to see if more reviews come in before updating the OP. But yeah, low 80s is very solid!
Just bumped up to 82 with 56 reviews. I’m not sure if I’m gonna get this game or not. I’ve been on the fence. I’ve read that the game was too easy even on hard and one reviewer was super into the end game until it became so easy to the point he didn’t feel the need to upgrade or really get into the systems
Funnily enough, P3:R has now dropped to an 89. Which makes it have the same score as the two other iterations of the base game. P3:FES and P3P both scored an 89.
I was watching Granblue Fantasy Relink gameplay. Not doing it for me. It doesn't look bad, but it's not getting my attention. That doesn't mean it isn't good though. Everyone has different gaming preferences.
Though Tekken 8 is a recent release that had my attention right away.
Suicide Squad at 63 so far on Metacritic. It actually doesn’t sound that bad though. Push Square gave it a 7 and said it has some of the best graphics on PS5 and the campaign’s apparently good. It just doesn’t have enough variety, so the endgame is not compelling. Honestly, that’s seems similar to The Avengers. The campaign was fun, but it just got boring after that. I may keep my preorder just to play through the campaign.

I'm still really glad I swapped it with Hellblade before the deadline.
On a personal level, I'm interested to try the game out when it goes on sale. I mean, I found a lot of enjoyment in Fallout 76, and I played it in its early iteration.
Well, it will most likely, I think, jump up to the 70's when the flood of reviews do come in. Only 8 is a very small amount. And since reviewers really didn't get to play before everyone else, it could just be that those early ones are just from people who hated the game and gave up on it. And the other reviewers are enjoying it, taking their time.

It’s at 61 with 14 reviews now and ign gave it a 5/10. That score is ridiculous IMO. The graphics, characters and story are a ton of fun a few hours in. I laughed out loud a few times and I never do that with video games. Gameplay definitely has a learning curve but is really fun so far
I'll wait for til Monday to update the OP. Let a few more reviews come in. But it may be GG to @TalonJedi87 already. No coming back from a score this low, unfortunately.
Neg me all you want for enjoying a game lol. I was just saying a 5/10 is sort of extreme and the game runs great and looks amazing. Obviously I know to enjoy a game that doesn’t review well, this is a thread that is about review scores and all lol
I mean I’m pretty sure I’ll find some enjoyment out of SS, but I just wish they would have let Rocksteady make that Superman game. If any dev could have finally made a great Supes game, it’s them.
I’m hoping that after all the $$ Hogwarts brought in, WB realizes just how easy it is to print money when you create a good licensed single player game that people actually want. Rocksteady has the pedigree to do Superman justice. I hope they get a shot at it.
Heck yeah and I’m loving the Hogwarts game as I’m playing it now too and I honestly thought it was going to pivot towards live service. So glad it didn’t but yeah after SS tanks in sales maybe they’ll circle round back to modeling their next major franchised game after Hogwarts model.
Hogwarts is not something to make a comparison... It's a super popular IP with almost no video games released in recent years compared to the over-saturated Super Hero video game market. Non-gamers bought Hogwarts cause Harry Potter is that popular.

Spider-Man prints money and we’ve had plenty of those. We haven’t had a Superman game. If it gets Arkham level reviews it’ll print so much money in my opinion.

I echo this so hard. ^ Especially if like say they made it where you don’t get to have all of Supes powers at first. Like make it Metroidvania style in a controlled open city world similar to the Arkham games where he starts out as Superboy perhaps and has to unlock and learn how to use his newfound powers to progress further and reveal new areas etc then by the end of the game is a powerhouse. Yeah. Sign me the heck up for that.
> Starting out strong this year...good luck everyone
Strong is an understatement. You set a record for January score.
Edit: but I guess a small caveat to that is, its an unusual year. Never has this many games, or this many picked and high scoring games ever come out in a January before. But you still nailed it. So good on you. Not trying to take that away by pointing it out.
