I view it that if buying something gives a person some happiness/excitement, and that person can afford it, and it doesn't come at the expense of their family, go for it. Treat yourself.
Maybe the main use of the item, even if you don't use it, is to get you excited for it in the first place, get some happiness from it.
That's my take on it. All those things you bought, if it made you happy/excited, then it was worth it.
