Currently has a May 12 2023 release date. That's just over 4 months away. That's not so far, but there isn't that much known about it.

Here's a video that has the reveal trailer and other info that has so far been released.

https://youtu.be/30DPu43_Uko

Is it unusual for such an anticipated title that's only several months away to not have much known about it?

I don't usually follow games along their pre-release stages, so perhaps a lack of info is standard.

Personally, I'd rather a lack of info when it comes to games that I plan on playing. I don't care for spoilers, or to watch every trailer that comes out.

I'd have thought there'd be more out about it though. But again, I don't usually follow along with the progress of game development.

Definitely a game I'm looking forward to though.

I was just looking at speed runs on YT, and 48 minutes is the fastest one so far, I think.

Slow down, dropped frames, pop in, glitches, etc. I'm like 8 hours in or so, 17 shrines, multiple towers, the game has many of the flaws BotW had, and more new ones. There was a banner in one area that was moving at around 1 frame per second. Some will get patched out, many won't. All that said this game is a fudging blast so far! I haven't put this much time into a game in a day since possibly RDR2, if not that then definitely BotW. It's early, but I could easily see this knocking BotW out of my top 3 all time.

Haven't played a Switch game at length for ages. Always hard to go back to these controls from playstation/xbox. I find myself consistently screwing up the controls. Is this just a me problem?

No, the controls for some things are just wonky.

I've only run into 1 so far that I didn't know what to do after a few minutes. In fact I decided to end my gaming session early so I could reset and try again later.

Resting on it was a good idea. Took me less than 10 minutes to get it this morning. This is the first one that was not intuitive at all for me.

Ran into some fun shrines kind of like Eventide Island. Really enjoying shrines in certain areas over others. It seems intentional.

The frame rate dip is very noticeable when playing docked.

I played 3.5 hours last night just to get thru the “intro” part of the game.

With 2 kids now, not sure if I will be able to put in anything close to the 170 hours I put into BOTW.

gosh darn that just made me feel old as hell. Even compared to when BOTW came out. A whole child was molded since that game released. Existential crisis: commencing.

8 bit Ganon was a tad different than mummy/zombie Ganondorf spewing black and purple crap all over Link.

That said I found your daughter's response hilarious. Different kids handle things differently. My wife said no to them playing it for that cutscene. I think they'll be fine, but I will honor her decision. Not judging anyone.

Only two more towers to go, then I'll go back to the main missions. Upgraded stamina once to a full circle, debating on going hearts or the second circle next. Currently have 2 upgrades waiting, and 4 more shrines marked. Love to explore.

Kind of disappointed in the treasure chests this go round. BotW you got good stuff (50+ rupees, new outfit pieces with unique benefits, strong weapons, rare items), in TotK it's common bows, arrows, other half-assed stuff. In BotW you'd find a chest with mostly good stuff on every other peak or lake. Not so much here. Was really hoping they'd throw an homage to BotW like having the climbing gear hidden at dueling peaks. Not a huge deal.

It's still been fun exploring the mainland and seeing how it's changed. Also digging the (a little more than typical zelda) subtle story so far. It's great having BotW setting the stage for this game so far.

So, I realize this is the TotK topic, but any tips to make BotW better? I'm gonna give it another go soon. Should I go for certain areas/items ASAP and then putz around exploring after? Anything to help

Yeah two different thoughts there. The reminiscing is not related to the horror scenes in TotK. Definitely not what I saw at her age.

The game is about exploring, not fighting until much later in the game or especially the DLC (with inventory management). My personal recommendation is to unlock towers in order to find shrines. Find Hestu and solve every Korok puzzle to unlock more eeapon slots, focus on melee first, bows a distant second, shields 3rd.
Attack shrines to fill 1 circle of stamina. Get the climbing gear and upgrade it in the fairy fountains. Fill your hearts to 13 and get the master sword. Get 1 suit of both cold, hot and fire gear.

Once you get the master sword combat is much easier. You stockpile strong weapons, and the master sword (which never breaks, only needs a recharge period) is much more effective on the bosses and guardians. Don't be afraid to run around enemies, especially early on. Color of enemies equals difficulty. Red is easy, blue is a step up, black and white more difficult. Goes for all common enemies. If it's not for you it's OK to close the book, ignore it and move on.

I have 4 hearts and crap armor in TotK. I run from most fights. Once I switch to heart focus that crap will be on.

I'll give it another try, seriously.

So Towers are the things you have to climb? I remember the first one, at the end you get the glider. And they show you shrines once unlocked?? Those are the small puzzle rooms that give heart/stamina upgrades?

That's the tutorial. When you finish that you get the glider. Then the world is yours.

Towers give you easier access to travel around as they have warps way up high which you can use your glider to travel far in relatively short amounts of time.

Shrines give you an item to upgrade stamina (ability to glide, climb and run) or hearts (4 shrines per upgrade). They (shrines) also provide a fast travel point whether you beat it or not, just need to activate it.

@kommie better is kind of subjective. Other than breaking weapons, what do you have a problem with?

Combat:
- get decent at timed dodging to trigger flurry rushes
- practice parrying lasers, this comes in very handy
- have fun by using the environment to your advantage like using stasis on boulders or setting things on fire

Exploring:
- if you're decent at combat, increasing stamina is much more useful than hearts. You'll be free to glide farther, climb higher, swim longer.
- there are some harsh environments due to the elements. Typically there will be plants nearby that counteract the loss of hearts in these environments (ie: 🌶 for safely traveling in cold weather). Cooking these into dishes and consuming them will negate the loss of hearts so you can more freely roam.
- like above, there are also clothing items that will negate the loss of hearts in extreme weather environments. Less reliance on cooking, but harder to find

It was mostly after the tutorial area where I stopped. Felt like I was just running, waiting for stamina to regen, then waiting again. Weapon breaking isn't that bad

Stamina for 1 full circle, then hearts to 13 (to get the master sword), then back to stamina imo. Get the climbing gear and upgrade it. That's my advice.

Is that your book or just a photo? Either way, pretty neat. The Zelda game I’d have been playing at her age was LttP. Still remember watching my uncle fight and beat Ganon. That was a good day.

Correct. At worst you have to convert stamina to hearts once you've got 13 to pick up the Master Sword but you can convert right back afterward, it just costs money.

Not sure how far along I've gotten so far, but I am loving it. Tears is capturing the same feeling BOTW did all those years ago.

It's not perfect. I've noticed a LOT of slowdown on a docked V1 Switch. It's pretty on par with the slowdown BOTW had, and not game-breaking. Just a bit annoying.

Also first thing I did was remap the controls. I waited until about halfway through my BOTW playthrough to do so, so I wanted to do it right this time. I mapped run to the left stick, jump to B, and crouch to X. It makes maneuvering while running much much easier, and just overall feels so much better.

I haven't played since Friday night since my girlfriend is here and her copy is waiting for her at home. She won't let me tell her ANYTHING laughing out loud

Frank, I didn't know you could map controls. I'm so used to PS5 controls recently that I keep clicking the left stick to run and accidentally crouching. I've found the controls very unintuitive so far. I just figured I would get used to it eventually. I keep screwing up in combat because I'm pressing B to jump.

I've also noticed the same graphical/slowdown issues. Maybe it's how much PS5 I've been playing recently, but the frame rate drops have been noticeable (and I normal never care about that stuff). It's especially noticeable in the sky islands. It's like the Switch can't keep up with the bright colors. I've also noticed the UI is sluggish when switching between weapons and items. Not a game breaker, but I have definitely noticed.

Saw a couple of videos on creative uses for the new crafting abilities. There were a couple ideas I hadn't thought of that could prove very helpful, and the other video was different ways to abuse the new abilities. Not the safest for work, but some of it was funny stuff though.

Yes, but I don't remember it being as bad as it is in TotK. Also, that was originally developed for the Wii U.
