I have 0 experience with Pikmin games. Can somebody describe to me what the gameplay is like? With 1 and 2 being brought to Switch, I kinda want to try them some day.

Pikmin to me would be better without the day cycle time limit. You basically have to lead your minions around completing puzzles and tasks in the environment and gather enough energy within a day’s cycle and if you don’t the day resets and you have to do it all over again.

Ha. I'm picturing a pile of unopened game cases and consoles piled up in a corner.

Also I read some articles where a Switch successor may not be fully backwards compatible due to dated tech. That would be a bummer since most of my Switch games are physical copies. I was actually trying to hold off on buying anymore 1st party Switch games until 2024 when the rumored new console may launch with hopes of BC.

Play the demo for Pikmin 4 when it's released. It's a niche game.

You can play during the night in the new one, so that’s neat.

At least in Pikmin 3, you don’t have to start all over if you fail your objective one day. You just pick back up where you left off. If I remember correctly, there were a few objectives that are almost guaranteed to take a few days. You DO need to get all the objectives dealt with in a certain amount of days dependent on how much fruit juice you make though (with 99 being the limit), but as long as you get your stuff dealt with in a timely manner, there’s usually time to spare by the end.

It’s pretty much real time strategy where you gather Pikmin from the environment and complete objectives using them (different types do different things, the more you have the quicker you get things done). In Pikmin 3 (the best one imo), you collect plants/fruits to create juice and give yourself more time to complete the main objective, and complete other objectives along the way. Different areas become accessible as you complete objectives/discover new Pikmin. It’s very fun and atmospheric, but can get a little tense toward the end of a day when you need to gather your Pikmin as to not lose them during the night. Like I mentioned above, the night cycles will be playable in Pikmin 4, so that apparently won’t be an issue anymore.

@theJaw Thanks for the explanation! I used to have no interest in strategy games, but after enjoying SteamWorld Heist so much, I'm open to trying some out. I'll throw Pikmin on the "to play" list.

That tension seems like part of the fun right? As a big fan do you worry that being able to be out at night will diminish some of the fun from that tension?

yeah it's either "subverting expectations" the game, or Mario "tripped the EF out", or both!

I think Yoshi carrying the shell is because he’s a playable character, so he can use shells like other characters would. The wiggler on Luigi sure is something else though haha

One tiny thing that probably shouldn’t get me as excited as it does is the fact that Mario’s hat flops up as he falls and then plops back down as he lands like it did in Super Mario World. That and his arms stretch out as he gains speed a little more in the way they did in SMW, as opposed to the animation used in the newer SMB games. Just little details like that add a bit more personality that I’m definitely looking forward to.

It definitely was part of the fun but honestly drove me nuts if I couldn't gather all the Pikmin in time. I have faith that however they choose to work the night cycle into Pikmin 4 will make up for the lack of that end-of-day scramble, on top of all the other stuff that game will apparently have. Big ol' puppy dog Pikmin thing will certainly help haha

Anyhow, fired up Fire Emblem on GBA and wasn't sure what I was expecting but I'm a bit disappointed so far (though I only played a bit of the prologue). Not a fan of the "talking anime head" style cut scenes and the graphics for the actual combat are very lacking. I know it's just GBA, but GBA also had games like FF Tactics Advance, so the graphics could've definitely been better. It also had ports of other FF games, so story beats could have played out with the in-game models and not the talking head shtick.

Oh well, maybe I'll keep going eventually. It really just made me want to fire up Banner Saga 2 and finally finish that + Banner Saga 3. Similar strategy/RPG combat but way better graphics and a story I've already invested myself in.

yeah they really went all out on that one. It seems like they said, hey let's all go to the "Mushroom kingdom" if you know what I mean, and see what we can come up with. Rules: ANYTHING GOES!! Talking flowers, pipes that slink like snakes, elephant mario, no rules, everything makes it in this game folks! lol. but it looks great.

I was waiting for news on this too but unfortunately it was confirmed that only the first game is on the cartridge. It's what I expected tbh. Super Mario 3D All-stars is the only collection of games I can recall off the top of my head that had all games on the cart due to the pretty small file sizes.

Did anyone here play Shovel Knight Dig? I don't remember seeing any discussion about it. It's on sale for $14.99 right now and I've been sitting on a lot of eShop credit for a while, so I decided to go ahead and snag it (even though I won't be getting to it for a while because of TotK).

Enjoy! I love it that someone here won one of these things. You always hear about someone you don't know at all winning the lottery or a prize or something. But in this case, it's someone from GTZ. Sweet. Have fun, and have us all in mind :)

I had good times with Fire Emblem GBA (both of them). Played them on a regular GBA. No backlight. Put a lot of hours into those. I definitely put a lot more time into Sacred Stones though. (It had this optional training tower area)

I played it for a bit on Apple Arcade. It was fun - I would have played it more if I had it on Switch.

I'm actually playing Fire Emblem: Binding Blade on the Japanese GBA app. It predates the 2 GBA games that were released in the US. I can't read Japanese at all but I'm able to do the battles without much issue.

I just wanna take a moment to reflect on the crap load of bad publicity that is hovering around Everybody 1-2-Switch. I mean, there must be a reason they left it out of the recent Nintendo Direct, right? We all know how poorly it tested over a year ago, which is why it took them so long to announce it in the first place. Each video they upload for it gets downvoted to hell on YouTube, and we're three days ahead of launch and they haven't even bothered sending out review copies yet, instead opting to hold an event where they invited a bunch of low level "content creators" (almost every post I'm seeing are Nintendo fans asking "who are they?" because they're definitely not the big name ones that people recognize) to Tokyo to play the game. Even that had its own problems.

When setting up the demo, a few Joy-Cons disconnected from the console, sending the Switch to its controller resync screen. That problem got much worse over time, as controllers became disconnected less than a minute — sometimes just seconds — apart. After several rounds of resyncs, which culminated in four controllers all desyncing at once, Nintendo representatives cut the Joy-Con portion of the demo short and fast-tracked us along to the smartphone portion of the game.

In the moment, Nintendo representatives didn’t have an answer for what the issue was, simply noting that the game was still in development. That’s usually a fair bit of reasoning when demoing a game that’s early in development, but this event took place a little over a week before the game’s launch.

https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/everybody-1-2...

Are they just sending this game out to die and just hoping to recoup some of the money spent on making it or what? That feels pretty un-Nintendo-like.

Is this actually a limited release? I'd need to drive like 50 miles to get it at GS, which is where I have credit. Just wanting to know if I can wait for more stock or is this it?

any dev or publisher Squareenix wants to work with to make physical versions that might not otherwise happen, I'm all for it. Hell yeah!

As far as if it will be limited, some limited editions end up selling out b4 release some end up being half price a year later. There is no way of knowing for sure. I waited on Lego Star Wars and ended up shuffling last minute to get one of the final copies. I'm not taking a chance on this one since it's only $40 and a game I'm super interested in. I got mine on Amazon and it's still available. No clue how "limited" it will be.

I'm not saying I'm against it, just that it's weird to see a game that is... shall we say... "above a certain quality level" with their logo on it.

Kind of like when Acclaim published Burnout 2.
