I don't know what everything else added up to, but that N64 alone is worth more than the Switch he bought.

The store themselves posted it on their IG page
https://www.instagram.com/p/CskajnNgyZn/?hl=en

However, the Kotaku article says
"So was it a good deal or not? A Tears of the Kingdom Switch plus the cash comes out to $1,060 total."

I want the store to confirm this, because I was under the impression he was given $700 in credit for all of that stuff and the Zelda OLED Switch came out of that, not that he was given a Zelda OLED in addition to $700. If the latter, then they didn't rip him off.

From the video it sounds like she says the switch and $700 cash. Plus there is a picture of the cash down at the bottom and the Zelda Switch. While I don't think it was a great deal, it is quicker than trying to find a buyer. Gotta play that Zelda now.

So I beat Breath of the Wild. I did learn that you can swap the buttons to go left to right, so B is A and A is B. But it only works with the Junks Cons and not the Hori Split Pad. So I'll just deal with reading text left to right and then having to remember the dumb fudging buttons go right to left.

For anyone interested, there's a bundle containing Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and Dying Light: Definitive Edition currently on sale for $10.79
I already own Call of Juarez, and I've beaten Dying Light (and the expansion) twice on PS4, but am thinking of buying this bundle just to have Dying Light on Switch and maybe giving it another playthrough. I don't know if DL has gone on sale this cheap before by itself.

So I did go ahead and start my replay of BotW before TotK. I last save file is from 6 years ago and honestly I remember virtually nothing about the game except the obvious (4 dungeons, a bunch of shrines, fighting ganon etc) but what's wild is that even though the first time I played the game I liked it but didn't think it was awesome or amazing, this run through I am enjoying it more. I don't know why but so far I am really digging it and I figure TotK will be around for a long time before a new Zelda game so no need to rush to play it.

Anyways, yeah I guess I am going to go thru this game again and then start TotK at some point. It looks pretty awesome on the Switch OLED

That's so weird. I never expected a sequel to 1-2 Switch. I won't lie, we've gotten a fair amount of enjoyment out of our copy of 1-2 Switch over the years. We've played it many times on family game nights, and also with guests. It can be a fun little party game with the right crowd. So I'm actually kind of looking forward to this. Not for $30 though. I already paid full price for the original, I'll wait until I can snag this for like $15.

Someone had said last year that Nintendo had a sequel to 1-2-Switch but were just sitting on it not sure what to do with it because it "tested horribly" among the play test groups. That guy knew what he was talking about, because here we are a year later and he even had the name correct. Maybe that has to do with why they cut the MSRP in half for this one. This article from June 7 of last year:

Unfortunately for Nintendo, it's claimed Everybody's 1-2-Switch simply didn't resonate with its target audience — namely, families with children — and "tested horribly". Play testers are said to have found its mini-games, which included musical chairs and a twist on bingo that required 'digging' out numbers using Joy-Cons, "boring" and "tedious".

The response was reportedly so bad, some employees within Nintendo began suggesting the game could damage the company's reputation for quality software if released. But despite those reservations, executives are reportedly refusing to be swayed on the idea of launching it as anything other than a full-price game (some employees have suggested releasing it as part of Switch Online's premium subscription), believing that - like its predecessor, which was also met with a poor critical reception - it will still sell well regardless of complaints.

Khan says his sources were unclear what the future might hold for Everybody's 1-2-Switch; while it's possible Nintendo may simply decide to cut its losses and abandon the project, sources say this is unlikely, and that Nintendo will "try to get the game out there one way or another."

Mystery Tower looks neat and I'm very excited to give the classic Harvest Moon a ago. Both look like fun pick up and play games.

Blaster Master looks cool but I feel like I should play through the newest Blaster Master game that I bought way back when Switch was still new as that's probably the best experience.

And I don't know about anybody else, but I'm over the constant addition of Kirby games. There's like 400 on NSO already. At least this one apparently has the tilt gimmick, but I don't need any more Kirby games haha

Yeah, some developers don't even try to make their game unique in their presentation.

I finally just beat Shredder’s Revenge last week. Not that it was hard at all (maybe too easy tbh), but it was a nice “pick up later and continue” game for me and I loved the overall experience.

I’m also a bit disappointed in the lack of any new levels, but I am curious as to what that new game mode is. I can’t seem to find any details on it. Is it just single player but with all the characters backing you up or what? If whatever it ends up being is fun enough, it may make up for the lack of new levels somewhat.

* 20-Jun-2023(#65)
I'm usually aware of when we're due for another Direct, but this one completely surprised me! Can't wait! I'll post my obligatory ongoing want list:

1) Mario Kart 9 - MK8 came out in 2014! I know they ported it to the Switch, but still, it's time for some new Mario Kart! I'd love to see them go full Smash Kart in the next one, bringing in way more characters from non-Mario games. Not so much for the characters though, I really don't care who I play as, I just like that it would open up tons of new level possibilities. Unfortunately, we won't be getting a new Mario Kart any time soon since they're only halfway through the Booster Course Pass, but it's still my top want. I want a brand new Mario Kart, danggit!

2) 2D Zelda - Not a port or a remake, just a brand new 2D Zelda game without any (stupid) gimmicks.

3) Donkey Kong Country 4 - More like the original trilogy, not Returns/Tropical Freeze. I know this is incredibly unlikely, but it's staying on my list anyway.

4) 2D Mario - something new that breaks free from the tired NSMB formula. A 2D Odyssey with Cappy could be great!

5) 3D Mario - I'd be happy with 3D World 2, Galaxy 3, Odyssey 2, something similar to SM64, or something brand new! I do think the next one will be a sequel though.

6) Yoshi's Woolly World port - Besides TP:HD and WW:HD (which I do think will find their way to the Switch eventually) this is the only Wii U game I care about that hasn't either been ported or gotten a superior sequel. It's one of my favorite games, and I would really love to have access to it on the Switch.

7) Pokemon, Let's Go (Gen 2) - I loved the unique mechanics of the first one, and really hope to see more gens clremade in a similar way.

8) F-Zero - I had dropped this one from my list for a while after playing Fast Racing Neo and being very disappointed. But, it's back on the list now because I'm sure Nintendo would do a much better job.

9) Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons remake - After playing the Link's Awakening remake, I wanted them to remake these two games in the same style. Now, I'm not so sure that style makes as much sense for the Oracle games. They're a bit darker/grittier than LA, and don't have the whole dream aspect. Either way, I'd love to see them remade!

10) 3D Zelda ports/collection - Ideally, we'd get a collection of all the pre-SS 3D Zelda games, so the 3DS versions of OoT and MM, TP:HD, and WW:HD. But, it's Nintendo, so I know that's asking a LOT. It's hard to see them not releasing TP:HD and WW:HD as stand-alones, we all know they'd sell like crazy. So, I don't really know what to expect, I just know I'd like to see these games become available on Switch.

11) Metroid Prime 2 and 3 remasters - I had hoped they would just remaster the whole trilogy all at once, but obviously that didn't happen. Now, I'm hoping they'll remaster the 2nd and 3rd games as well, and then I'll play through all of them.

12) 2D Metroid - I'd be fine with a brand new one, or a remake. I thoroughly enjoyed Samus Returns and Dread, so I want 2D Metroid games to keep coming!

13) DS/3DS Player - something like the GBA Player, but for DS and 3DS games. Not exactly sure how this would work, maybe some add-on to the dock that could communicate with the Switch wirelessly, so the Switch itself would be the controller and bottom screen, and the add-on would display the top screen on the tv. It's not perfect, but I think it could work, and it would be great to be able to play ALL handheld Nintendo games on a TV.

Out of those, I think my top wants that are actually realistic things that could be announced tomorrow are either a 2D or 3D Mario, Metroid Prime 2 remaster, and maybe a new 2D Metroid. We're still getting more waves of courses for Mario Kart 8, so 9 isn't coming any time soon. That will probably be on the Switch's successor. Tears of the Kingdom just dropped, so I definitely don't see a new 2D Zelda coming out anytime soon, and probably not the Ages/Seasons remakes either (although I do believe those are coming eventually). I'm still hoping for another Pokemon Let's Go, but that would be announced in a Pokemon Direct, not this one.

REALLY hoping for a new Mario game, it's been too long! I'd be thrilled with 2D or 3D!

I know it's wishful thinking, but I'd swim in my own stool for an HD-2D Mario game. I don't see them ever doing a traditional 2D Mario game again, and I really don't need another "New" SMB game with its floaty controls, but an HD-2D Mario game with a similar graphics style to Octopath Traveler would be a new gimmick for the series that they haven't tried. I think it'd be worth a go for sure. Just imagine running through a SMB3 or SMW-style level but with the foreground and background playing into the atmosphere even more than they already did, hiding secrets and whatnot? A man can dream.

Really love that they wait to announce these until near release. People hype up everything, then complain when it doesn't meet unreal expectation. I can see the YouTuber hype train going full speed right now to get crap posted...

It'll be Pikmin 4, a well rumored game or two, third party stuff, NES Online/DLC update and a surprise or two.

As much as I would love some big announcements today, I don't have much hope. It really feels like we're about to enter the end-of-system drought, when Nintendo is focusing all of their efforts on games that will release on their next system. I would love to be wrong though.

I've talked a lot about Yoshi's Woolly World in the past. It's one of my favorite games. I usually don't like easier games, and I'm really not a huge fan of the Yoshi series, but I simply love this game. The graphics, the music, the collectibles, the level design...everything just comes together perfectly! One of my best video game memories is playing through this game with my family back when it came out. I've been wanting to play through it with them again but kept putting it off. Finally, for Father's Day weekend, I told them I wanted to start up another playthrough. To my great surprise, both kids were instantly excited, and keep wanting to play every chance we get! We're on the 4th world now and this game is just as great as I remember it. I still hope it gets ported to the Switch some day, it deserves it!

Super Mario Bros. Wonder!!! Finally, a departure from the tired NSMB formula. This is exactly what I've been wanting for a long time now! I'm really surprised they didn't use Cappy though. Seemed like an obvious mechanic to incorporate to make a fresh 2D Mario game. Still, this looks great!

The other huge surprise was the remake of Luigi's Mansion 2. My son LOVES LM3 and was just asking me the other day if I thought they would ever release the old ones on Switch. I told him I was 99% sure that would never happen. He's excited now. I actually texted him at school to let him know.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Can't believe they're actually remaking Mario RPG. I enjoyed the game the one time I played it as a kid, but never thought it was so great. Still, I've thought about replaying it for a long time now, so a remake is a great opportunity to do so.

I'm intrigued by the Princess Peach game, hopefully it ends up being something good.

I would have preferred a brand new Luigi's Mansion, but I'll take a Switch remaster. Weird that they didn't start with the first one though. Maybe because it's kind of bare content-wise compared to 2 and 3. They could add some stuff to it though.

Mostly excited about Mario Wonder though. I'm so glad we're getting a new 2D Mario this year, and it actually looks fresh and fun!

Yeah me too, I did not like "get together". I finished the main part then sold it. I really think it's because it was focused on a multiplayer type experience. Even the name of the game suggests it. I mean, there were several games completely locked behind being multiplayer only.

I honestly think you'll like this one. It's theme is getting up and moving around. Similar to ring fit adventure. As long as it's single player focused I think it's going to be great! The other Warioware games that used motion or gyro (twisted, and smooth moves) were both awesome! I have high hopes for this next Warioware game!

Things I'm actively looking forward to:
Super Mario Bros Wonder
Super Mario RPG
Pikmin 4 (+ Pikmin 1 & 2 to a lesser extent)

Things I'm still into:
-Sonic Superstars
-Whatever that Peach game is
-That free Palia game kinda
-the MK courses
-Star Ocean

Things I'm semi-interested in:
-That Metal Gear Solid collection. Never played any MG or MGS game, but hear they're great and with the amount of retro content in that package, I may snag it to get the most bang for my buck.

On the topic of Super Mario Bros Wonder: It looks neat. I don't love the overworld map, it still looks sorta cheap like the NSMB or "3D" series maps look, but it's side-scrolling platforming Mario so I'm in. When I see footage of NSMB, I can legit feel the floatiness of the controls, but I didn't get that feeling with the footage of Wonder. Of course I'll need to feel it to truly judge, but I'm cautiously optimistic that the controls are a bit tighter than the other more recent side-scrolling Mario games. While I obviously would have preferred a little love for the classic pixel-art style of 2D Mario (and am admittedly a little bummed that it didn't make any sort of return, HD2D or not), I do enjoy the slight updates to the designs/animations for the characters in Wonder and vastly prefer those to the copy/paste NSMB look we've got for years now.

I've actually been replaying NSMBU on Switch with the kids lately. I guess I know what you mean by floatiness, but idk, it's not that bad and really doesn't bother me personally. The other end of spectrum would be very stiff controls like SMB1, and we definitely don't want that. The "floatiness" allows for better control and maneuvering IMO.

I'm not entirely sure how to explain it, and it's admittedly not the biggest issue in the world. But with the NSBM/"3D" games, the overworld maps just lacked personality. Just a fairly plain board with the levels pasted along the way, and in some of the games (the 3D games mainly) free-walking across the board made it feel like there was no real sense of direction. It just didn't hit the way the maps in SMB3/SMW did, even with the levels only represented by boxes or circles on a linear path. Maybe it's just the pixel art and flat, cartoony nature of the graphics for those maps that I miss.

That said, I re-watched the Wonder trailer and my initial reaction isn't entirely valid. The tiny clip of the map we got is actually a lot more detailed and generally "fun" looking than I originally gave it credit for. I missed a lot of the personality I suppose, so I take back that initial criticism. My bad there.

If you dig it, more power to you, but (to sound like a broken record using my primary examples) there's totally a notable difference between the tightness of the controls when it comes to games like SMB3 or SMW vs the NSMB series. Having played them all around the same time as each other a bunch of times, it's very noticeable to me. I don't necessarily need the ENTIRE other end of the spectrum, I just want them to feel solid like SMB3/SMW. I could maneuver and control perfectly fine without the added floatiness, and in some cases even better because having to be a bit more precise trains one to control with a higher focus instead of inadvertently relying on the added "float" that sometimes messes up the rhythm of levels. At least that's how it feels to me, like there's a slight lack of gravity in the NSMB games compared to the classics.

That old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", and I think the platforming of the NES/SNES Mario games is about as perfect as a 2D platformer can get so I never saw the reason why they needed to make it more "airy" feeling. To me, it just feels like a knock-off Mario clone's attempt at recreating the classic control schemes and, while it comes close, it's just not as satisfying.

I just bought touched to add to my collection. Now I have smooth moves, twisted, and touched. Gonna add the OG gba game but I'll be paying $130 + for a mint complete copy some day. Those will probably be my favorite 4. I hope this new one can be #5! It def has that smooth moves get up and move and make different movements vibe.

- I was expecting some sort of Tears of the Kingdom DLC announcement, but then again, TotK is MASSIVE
- Still nothing on the long rumored ports of Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD

Other than that, this direct was awesome. I'm not interested in many of the games, but there is something for everyone.

I’m still a bit hesitant to play any of these new games on the old hardware and hold out for a Swirch successor. I mean it’s been almost 7 years. One would think in another year or so they’ll give us something at least maybe 20% better the hardware on the Switch. I mean can we at least get a new console to not run the new Zelda at below 30fps?

They definitely brought it today! I can't help but wonder though if this means we're not as close to a Switch successor as we thought... Although, other than Mario Wonder, most of what we were shown today was either a remake, remaster, or a game that we've known about and has been in development for a while. So maybe they're filling up the Switch's final year with mostly remakes and stuff, while the big, brand new games are already being worked on for Switch 2.

Agree with all of this. I'd also add 3D Mario. I know they announced a new 2D Mario game, and it was unlikely they'd announce both a 2D Mario AND a 3D Mario, but still...it's going on 6 years since Mario Odyssey. If you look back at how far apart the 3D Mario games have been, 6 years is an unusually long gap (with the exception of 64 to Sunshine).

64 - 9/29/96
Sunshine - 8/26/02
Galaxy - 11/12/07
Galaxy 2 - 5/23/10
3D Land - 11/13/11
3D World - 11/22/13
Odyssey - 10/27/17

I'm confident we will get DLC for TotK, and I'm certainly in no hurry. That said, I was surprised to learn the other day that the DLC for BotW was actually announced before the game even released!

In the SMB Wonder trailer, is it just me or did Mario's voice sound different than usual? He almost sounded more high-pitched, like Mickey Mouse or something.

I'm disappointed in the multiplayer being local only. When they added online co-op to SM3DW and SMM2, I feel like the groundwork is already there and future games going forward would have it. I'm still buying it though and it was the highlight of the Direct for me. On one hand I hope it gets its own mini-Direct before release, but on the other hand, I feel like I don't need to know more, I will be buying it based on what was shown today alone.

Not huge on Pikmin 1 & 2 being $30 each (or $50 for both). I'll be skipping those unless they go on sale some day down the line, still got AEW Fight Forever and Pikmin 4 coming this summer, on top of still playing TOTK and planning on playing Fire Emblem GBA when it pops on NSO.

Yeah, I was kinda surprised, because I thought the map looked more detailed and nicer than any previous world map. My favorite was the 3D World map since you could actually move around and explore, instead of being stuck to pre-defined paths. Unfortunately, they didn't do much with it. I kinda wish Wonder was going to have an open world map like that, but have secrets hidden though out it.

Yeah, I notice the differences, I just don't think they're bad. Even comparing SMB3 and SMW, the controls were different, but I like both. I just don't think the NSMB controls are bad, that's all, but I do recognize that they're different. I think playing so much Mario Maker got me really used to them, because the controls in that game are closest to that of NSMBU.

I am kinda curious now though. The last time I played them really close together was probably around 2018. The next time me and the kids are going to play NSMB, I may throw on SMB3 and SMW first for a few minutes each, and see what I think of them now.

That price is in line with Metroid Prime Remastered. They didn't really say if this was remastered in the same way, but they did say HD. Seeing as how each of them sell for over $50 on GameCube, I'll gladly pay $50 for both with the added convenience of HD graphics on my Switch on my big TV.

Edit - I just read that they are doing a physical release in September. I REALLY don't like that. MP was digital first for two weeks. This is 3 months. That's crazy. I expect this to become a thing for Nintendo in the future. I said something similar when TotK was leaked a week early and posted all over the internet. Nintendo is going to start experimenting with digital first or digital only releases.

They confounding our acronyms. SMW, NSMBW, SMBW... arg!

Seriously though, that game seems like someone took NSMBW, mixed it with Yoshi's Island, then slammed some SMB2 (Doki Doki Panic) in. I hope they didn't mess with the difficulty much and Paper Mario the series.

Overall a lot in the direct, not a ton for me. Doing a great job of doing fan service to older N gamers imo, though not for free as expected. Many old rumors confirmed here.

If they get all 3 Arkham games on cart I'll probably eventually pick that up. Warioware might be fun with the kids at a discount. Glad to see a Sparks of Hope demo, same for Pikmin 4. Been on the fence at $30 for Rabbids. Wonder will likely be my second voucher game, but I will need to see and hear more. That is too weird to not think they jacked with the difficulty one way or another. On a side note, Super Mario Maker 3 in a few years?

Edit: That Ganondorf Amiibo looked sweet, though I hate the clear supports. Urbosa knows what I'm talking about.

They need to make SMB Wonder harder than the recent batch of Mario games. I want to get stuck on a few levels at least a couple times. I don’t want it to be another 1-Up fest.

Pikmin 4 Looks HUGE! Will also pick up the physical Pikmin 1 & 2, still have my GC copies never picked them up on Wii so maybe time to let them go as I don't keep a GC hooked up. I know I read HD but the screenshots look like GC to me.

Batman and MGS collections are nice for switch fans that want them on the go. I am not gonna get sucked into it as I picked up a few other collections and got rid of them soon after.

Super Mario Bros Wonder, for sure going to pick this up day one maybe even digital as the wife is asking to play it today raspberry

Super Mario RPG and Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, I am not sure yet both are excellent and glad a New generation will enjoy them but I think N already got my money on those so doubt I pick those up, maybe later.

I dunno, I thought that was Wii U followed by 3d World. The DS game was meh. The Wii game was more of the same sans the last couple worlds which were fun. The 3ds game was a 1-up snooze-fest. The Wii U game was a worthy 2d Mario akin to the original 4 imo. 3d World expanded upon that.

I don't think any new Mario from Nintendo will go Mario Maker expert level... let alone super expert. That's why they gave us Maker. I bet Wonder is easier than NSMBU, akin to 98% of Odyssey.

Speaking of Metroid Prime 4. I really think it's going to be a Switch 2.0 launch game (or launch window) with beautiful graphics. I just started playing Metroid Prime Remastered on my switch OLED and was surprised how good it looks. The lighting and textures look really good. I get chills thinking how good Metroid Prime 4 will look on Switch 2.

I would kill for a harder 2D Mario game made by Nintendo. I'd love to see them add difficulty settings, that way there could still be an easier mode for the lightweights.

Pikmin to me would be better without the day cycle time limit. You basically have to lead your minions around completing puzzles and tasks in the environment and gather enough energy within a day’s cycle and if you don’t the day resets and you have to do it all over again.

Also I read some articles where a Switch successor may not be fully backwards compatible due to dated tech. That would be a bummer since most of my Switch games are physical copies. You can play during the night in the new one, so that’s neat.

At least in Pikmin 3, you don’t have to start all over if you fail your objective one day. You just pick back up where you left off. If I remember correctly, there were a few objectives that are almost guaranteed to take a few days. You DO need to get all the objectives dealt with in a certain amount of days dependent on how much fruit juice you make though (with 99 being the limit), but as long as you get your stuff dealt with in a timely manner, there’s usually time to spare by the end.

It’s pretty much real time strategy where you gather Pikmin from the environment and complete objectives using them (different types do different things, the more you have the quicker you get things done). In Pikmin 3 (the best one imo), you collect plants/fruits to create juice and give yourself more time to complete the main objective, and complete other objectives along the way. Different areas become accessible as you complete objectives/discover new Pikmin. It’s very fun and atmospheric, but can get a little tense toward the end of a day when you need to gather your Pikmin as to not lose them during the night. Like I mentioned above, the night cycles will be playable in Pikmin 4, so that apparently won’t be an issue anymore.

That tension seems like part of the fun right? As a big fan do you worry that being able to be out at night will diminish some of the fun from that tension?

Yeah, I'm beyond excited for this game. I feel like what they showed in the trailer is just the tip of the iceberg for the wackiness in this game.

yeah it's either "subverting expectations" the game, or Mario "tripped the EF out", or both!

I think Yoshi carrying the shell is because he’s a playable character, so he can use shells like other characters would. The wiggler on Luigi sure is something else though haha

One tiny thing that probably shouldn’t get me as excited as it does is the fact that Mario’s hat flops up as he falls and then plops back down as he lands like it did in Super Mario World. That and his arms stretch out as he gains speed a little more in the way they did in SMW, as opposed to the animation used in the newer SMB games. Just little details like that add a bit more personality that I’m definitely looking forward to.

It definitely was part of the fun but honestly drove me nuts if I couldn't gather all the Pikmin in time. I have faith that however they choose to work the night cycle into Pikmin 4 will make up for the lack of that end-of-day scramble, on top of all the other stuff that game will apparently have. Big ol' puppy dog Pikmin thing will certainly help haha

Anyhow, fired up Fire Emblem on GBA and wasn't sure what I was expecting but I'm a bit disappointed so far (though I only played a bit of the prologue). Not a fan of the "talking anime head" style cut scenes and the graphics for the actual combat are very lacking. I know it's just GBA, but GBA also had games like FF Tactics Advance, so the graphics could've definitely been better. It also had ports of other FF games, so story beats could have played out with the in-game models and not the talking head shtick.

Oh well, maybe I'll keep going eventually. It really just made me want to fire up Banner Saga 2 and finally finish that + Banner Saga 3. Similar strategy/RPG combat but way better graphics and a story I've already invested myself in.

yeah they really went all out on that one. It seems like they said, hey let's all go to the "Mushroom kingdom" if you know what I mean, and see what we can come up with. Rules: ANYTHING GOES!! Talking flowers, pipes that slink like snakes, elephant mario, no rules, everything makes it in this game folks! lol. but it looks great.

I was waiting for news on this too but unfortunately it was confirmed that only the first game is on the cartridge. It's what I expected tbh. Super Mario 3D All-stars is the only collection of games I can recall off the top of my head that had all games on the cart due to the pretty small file sizes.

I had good times with Fire Emblem GBA (both of them). Played them on a regular GBA. No backlight. Put a lot of hours into those. I definitely put a lot more time into Sacred Stones though. (It had this optional training tower area)

I played it for a bit on Apple Arcade. It was fun - I would have played it more if I had it on Switch.

I'm actually playing Fire Emblem: Binding Blade on the Japanese GBA app. It predates the 2 GBA games that were released in the US. I can't read Japanese at all but I'm able to do the battles without much issue.

I just wanna take a moment to reflect on the crap load of bad publicity that is hovering around Everybody 1-2-Switch. I mean, there must be a reason they left it out of the recent Nintendo Direct, right? We all know how poorly it tested over a year ago, which is why it took them so long to announce it in the first place. Each video they upload for it gets downvoted to hell on YouTube, and we're three days ahead of launch and they haven't even bothered sending out review copies yet, instead opting to hold an event where they invited a bunch of low level "content creators" (almost every post I'm seeing are Nintendo fans asking "who are they?" because they're definitely not the big name ones that people recognize) to Tokyo to play the game. Even that had its own problems.

When setting up the demo, a few Joy-Cons disconnected from the console, sending the Switch to its controller resync screen. That problem got much worse over time, as controllers became disconnected less than a minute — sometimes just seconds — apart. After several rounds of resyncs, which culminated in four controllers all desyncing at once, Nintendo representatives cut the Joy-Con portion of the demo short and fast-tracked us along to the smartphone portion of the game.

In the moment, Nintendo representatives didn’t have an answer for what the issue was, simply noting that the game was still in development. That’s usually a fair bit of reasoning when demoing a game that’s early in development, but this event took place a little over a week before the game’s launch.

https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/everybody-1-2...

Are they just sending this game out to die and just hoping to recoup some of the money spent on making it or what? That feels pretty un-Nintendo-like.

As far as if it will be limited, some limited editions end up selling out b4 release some end up being half price a year later. There is no way of knowing for sure. I waited on Lego Star Wars and ended up shuffling last minute to get one of the final copies. I'm not taking a chance on this one since it's only $40 and a game I'm super interested in. I got mine on Amazon and it's still available. No clue how "limited" it will be.

I'm not saying I'm against it, just that it's weird to see a game that is... shall we say... "above a certain quality level" with their logo on it.

Interested to hear everybody's take on the Pikmin 4 demo. I'm happy to hear the general consensus is very positive, but I'm really not liking it so far. People keep praising the graphics. I think it looks oversaturated. The pausing of throwing Pikmin once you reach the needed amount sucks. I am missing the dismiss button too. Maybe that will be an added skill for later. The controls feel too loose but also too rigid at the same time (locking onto items).

Oh come on. There's no way anybody thinks these graphics are more than ok for 2023. It's typical Nintendo though...super charming and the unique design language and style makes the graphic fidelity honestly not be as necessary. So it's totally fine but Pikmin 4 looks just like what I remember Pikmin 1 looking like when that came out.

I agree with that about the graphics. Part of what I enjoy about Nintendo's style of games is the pleasing art style and the charm and polish that I've come to expect from Nintendo games. Personally, I consider the graphics secondary. I don't must have every blade of grass moving independently in order to really appreciate a game.

There are other platforms for that if someone wants to experience the best graphics out there.

Great question. There's a painter that travels Hyrule. You can find him at several stables. If you speak to him, he'll give you clues. In your sheika slate, there are pictures that show clues of where memories are, based on what the painter tells you. It's a unique challenge, seeing if you can find an area simply based on a photo that the painter shows you. Some are easier than others.

For example, imagine that there's a part in the game where you meet a talking apple that juggles mayo jars. That image would likely stick in your mind. And if the painter showed you an image of that talking apple, you'd quite possibly be like "oh yeah, the apple was near that village near the waterfall."

But now imagine that the painter showed you an image of several trees. Much less distinct. Might be harder to recall where those trees are.

I'd suggest going to a bunch of stables until you find the painter.

Q1 N's fiscal year? (Apr-Jun '24) That would line up with the Switch release, right?

If it's Q1 calendar year that seems like bad timing for the states. Missed the holiday season, taxes coming due, refunds not yet issued.

I still remember going to the midnight launch at Best Buy, it was a great time! Got my Switch and went straight home to play Breath of the Wild all night.

The Switch is the only console I can play as an adult. It'd be impossible to get 10% of the hours on a traditional console compared to Switch. It's so easy to get bonus time with Switch.

Yah playing in bed at night via Switch has helped me get the gaming time in that I never would have on a normal home console. It actually helped reinvigorate my gaming in general, for better or worse. Only a few titles on Xbox or PS ever really interest me, so when I finish those games, I never play much else. And then I’d always pick and choose which Nintendo games to invest in due to the time issue. Switch has a library full of games that interest me, and a bunch that I would have never bothered to try unless they could be played handheld here and there in my off time instead of only being available when I’m contained to a TV.

That convenience the Switch provided actually informed my decision this week to snag an RG351V off eBay so that I could dive all the way back into retro gaming easier than it would have been to stay sat at a computer or TV.

My Switch launch experience was probably different than most. I just wasn't hyped for it at all for some reason. I guess I blame it on 3DS, PS Vita and Wii U, all of which I bought on release day and all of which had pretty mediocre launches for the most part (and only the 3DS really recovered and ended up not being a purchase I regret in the long run), and I wasn't convinced Switch would be any different.

I had paid it in full the day GameStop started accepting pre-orders, but come launch day a few months later I didn't even go to the store to pick up my console until 2 or 3 days post-launch when they left me a voice mail saying if I didn't pick it up the next day before closing time they would have to sell it to someone else. After watching a couple YouTubers play Zelda I figured I'll go and finally pick it up. I didn't even start Zelda until a couple of weeks later and I splurged and bought all the DLC for it (that I still never played). In the end I definitely don't regret buying it, but even after that with the PS5 and Xbox Series X launches, I was not hyped at all but I also wasn't really concerned because I typically only buy Nintendo consoles on launch day anyway.

I pre-ordered a Switch once announced. I ended up canceling the preorder as I had no hype for the system itself, and the only game at launch I wanted to play I could play on Wii U the same day. It's actually grown to be my second favorite system.

Oh, I had a "vacation" from hell where I was stuck at night sleeping in a tiny room on a tiny bed, could not make much noise or turn on a TV else wake my kids, and averaged 2.5 hours of sleep per 24 hours. The Switch was a godsend. Made a big dent in TotK.

I did buy my Switch until late 2018, more than a year and a half after it was released. I wasn't in a rush to buy one. I don't think I was following the initial release either. It was a great purchase. For someone who primarily games handheld anyway, the Switch was an obvious choice. To have a home console that's a hybrid? Yes please.

I've got to do something like this some day. I'd probably play my PS5/XSX more if I did. As it's a bit of a wait to get the projector and receiver system booted up.

I feel like trying to get a hold of smash ultimate at a decent price, even though historically I'm not a huge smash fan. But with the insane amount of characters, it really is the ultimate version of smash. Just like MK8 is the ultimate Mario Kart.

Anyone playing Pikmin 4 or what? I got same day delivery for today so it’ll be here soon, but I’m playing more of the demo right now since data carries over. I’m really enjoying it, and sorta love the lack of a day limit. It lets me enjoy the game at my own pace (save for the day/night cycles). There’s already so much to find and explore in just the first main area.

OT2 is what I plan to fall back on whenever I finish Pikmin 4. I was getting a little bored just collecting new characters and doing their tutorial-style first chapters so I took a break but now I’ve got that “traditional JRPG” itch back.

Does anyone know if Mario Odyssey has a case variant? I'm currently selling a sealed copy, and have it listed in FB Marketplace. A guy messaged me and said he was interested, but asked for a picture of the back. Once I sent it to him, he said he wasn't interested. I asked him why a picture of the back changed his mind, and he said it wasn't the version he was looking for. Does this game have a alternate cover art or something?

I am. I'm loving it, although I'm going really slow. I wasn't entirely sold on the demo, especially some of the changes. It is a little on the east side, but the challenge in Pikmin has always been to go as fast as you can and lose the least amount of Pikmin possible. The difficulty is completely up to you. Plus, getting platinums in Dandori challenges is going to be really hard.

Today, I managed to do something I've never had happen with these apps before. I got up to the second dungeon of Seasons yesterday, and when I went to load the save data I somehow managed to overwrite it instead. It won't take long to get back there, but still annoying that I did that, lol.

Uhh, I guess I should remember to save in game after every play session. (In case my dumb self does this again.) Looks like I only saved after I got the sword.

If the remakes would have had the same “toy” aesthetic as the Link’s Awakening remake, I’m glad they opted to just port them to NSO. I’m sure it’s a fine remake but I’m not into the look of it and will almost always prefer playing older games like that with the original retro look they were released with.

I haven't played either tbh, I'm looking forward to giving them a go now. I just generally prefer to play retro games the way they originally looked, and sometimes find the "polish" of remakes a bit unsatisfying, so I'm glad to have them on NSO in their original form.

First game was awesome. Great gothic like art style and pretty challenging. The final boss took me a while though because of its multiple phases with no checkpoints in between phases.

About an hour in so far.

It's very much a platformer, kind of in the same vein as Rayman Origins/Legends but with a more open world rather than predefined levels.

It's also kind of metroid style in that you will be getting new moves (double jump, wall jump, etc) to access new areas that were previously inaccessible. Controls quite well though. (I think in Rayman Legends you have all your moves from the start)

There is no combat in the game so far; your options for dealing with enemies are to avoid them. So far it has been very easy - enemies have had pretty static patterns.

It does have a decent sense of humor, though.

If you haven't played Rayman Legends, personally I think it is 100x better than what I have experienced in Illusion Island so far. I would say get Rayman Legends first. But if you have it already and want a new game in that same style, this is the closest we've gotten in years. It will disappoint but only because Rayman Legends is SO good.

Rayman Legends is 5Star. Maybe best on WiiU, Prettiest on PS4, and picked it up on Switch for good measure.

So far I have not played a game only in Handheld BUT Pikmin 4 has worked out that way n it is made for handheld. Now I am looking for an OLED. On the 2nd area with 3 unlocked so far and I have Zero complaints.

Fair point. I usually recommend Legends over Origins because most of Origins' levels are included in Legends as unlockables. Legends is definitely more bang for your buck contentwise.

True, I just really love the levels and art of Origins. The art in Origins has that thick black outline and has a nicer looking hand drawn style that is more appealing to me. Not saying Legends is NOT hand drawn. It's just that the style and colors used are more to my taste in Origins. I remember being really wowed playing it on the Vita the first time. The small OLED screen just paired so well with that art style.

That water level with that song with the weird vocals was jaw dropping. I know Legends has that song too. It's just such a good 2D platformer.

I feel like they have a bad habit of over explaining things in their games. It's especially bad in Animal Crossing where certain characters will repeat lines a bajillion times for even the most basic things. I remember in Skyward Sword on Wii there was unnecessary text that would pop up every time you collected a rupee, it was so bad that someone made a cheat for the Dolphin emulator that would disable that from popping up anymore (fans do what Nintendon't!)
