Mostly racing game content, makes unique and often silly metagames within said racing games. Examples include: races in GTA 5 where some players are racing and others are shooting the "boopy gun" at them to flip their cars; Races in BeamNG drive against rising water levels and other players, themed in Forza Horizon where everyone has certain restrictions on their cars, etc.

I like this guy, have been subscribed for a few years. He uploads around once a month, reviewing or giving retrospectives on older, slightly obscure-ish games and games that people have kinda forgotten about, like the Red Steel series on Wii, or some old game involving the band Queen.

KaraComparetto. She plays piano beautifully and has a focus on playing covers of her favorite game songs. She’s done the entirety of FF6 and is almost done with ChronoTrigger.

She seemed interested in my suggestion of a Pandora’s Tower medley, since the music in that game is classical music—her favorite to play—but I suspect she was just being nice and doesn’t plan to actually do it. Oh well, her other vids are good enough. smile

He doesn't post as often anymore, but he has a great sense of comedic timing, and he posts about some really strange topics. His "Punching Weight" series about ports and releases that really stretched the limits of a platform (with mixed success) are fantastic watches.

No, I don't know what the name means either.

A problem with the YouTube algorithm is that it rewards YouTubers more for making long videos than short ones. I love a good, long video, but that means most channels will spend months producing a single episode and then disappear again after it's posted. So I end up rewatching videos I've already seen just to fill that void when I'd really like something new.

If you want channels that produce quality content frequently, try Flandrew and MagicMush. Flandrew posts every Sunday about licensed games and occasionally AAA games, and has some wit. MagicMush talks about the Internet, which usually includes something video game-related--Sonic, Mario, a speedrunner, glitches, etc. He's pretty funny and informative.

Yup, this has been an issue for me personally. I would love to just make multiple smaller 1-3 minute videos discussing one game. Instead, I do my "Frank's Five" series and talk about 5 different games with a central theme.

I feel like the era of short videos was back when YouTube was still more of a niche thing. Now that YouTube has really blown up in the mainstream, I feel like they want longer content to directly compete with TV/Streaming.

I find myself watching a mix of shorter and longer videos, but I typically avoid long videos from channels I'm not as familiar with. Where-as I like shorter videos to get bite-sized bits of different creators' styles.

Okay, fine, I've been waffling on recommending Game Sack because I waver back and forth on loving and hating him, but I guess he wins this round.

https://www.youtube.com/@GameSack

Joe is more comfortable in his cheesy dorkiness than any other YouTube personality. He ends every video with a comedy sketch that's loosely related to the content he covered, and probably by design, they rarely land. In fact, his aloof approach to comedy is probably what makes him so hilarious when he occasionally succeeds at being funny.

That all said, this guy is really gifted when it comes to the mechanics of shooting video. His usage of video effects and transitions is really sharp. He's great with stop motion animation; just check out his intro. And he's supplemented that with some serious knowledge of retro consoles and video signals.

My favorite videos of his are when he deep dives into a specific platform or accessory and talks about the games that support it. They're great complements when you're looking for something to check off in the Beat a Game threads.

One thing that bugs me these days is I think they encourage content creators to upload YouTube #Shorts videos, a minute or less in length. I personally don't watch them, though I don't care that they exist for those who do watch them and it makes it easy to share clips of them on social media, but since I don't watch them I wish that you could disable notifications specifically for #Shorts videos. I know tomorrow I'm already going to get a bunch of notifications of them from various YouTubers reacting to the Nintendo Direct and/or State of Play showcases.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BEAT SUPER MARIO 64 WITHOUT COLLECTING A COIN? LET'S TAKE 40 MINUTES OF YOUR TIME TO FIND OUT!

Just start the video at "yes" or "no" and then show why. Your channel will get a "Don't recommend this channel" from me if you are all filler and no substance.

Or if your thumbnails are full of youtube-face. There are a couple of really great content creators I just refuse to watch anymore because they can't stop doing the youtube face nonsense.

@benstylus I don't mind having a little suspense in a video like that. What bugs me if when a video with an easily assumed answer tries to drag itself out. "Why does Peach's voice sound different now?" Because they got a new VA, maybe? I don't need a 15-minute video to explain the concept of a company switching voice actors after years have passed.

It bugs me when a really average-mediocre channel comes up with great concepts, because I know the potential will likely be squandered on an unremarkable video and anyone else who uses that idea will be seen as a rip-off.

If it's a question that can be answered in two seconds, I appreciate it when it's answered in two seconds for a prepared video.

If it's a livestream or similar type of video I'm generally OK with following the streamer's progress as they play and "discovering" the answer together. I just dislike the "I know the answer, you don't, now watch the next 40 minutes of me explaining this montage of clips of how you can get through until this one point where you can't do it anymore and that's the end like subscribe and Smash that bell to get notified of all my future videos because you absolutely MUST watch them immediately when the notification goes out because goodness knows you don't post the first comment in my next video you may as well just jump in front of a truck and hope your next life is more successful" style

I recently found Flandrew too and enjoy his content. Is wit is pretty one note, so his jokes can fall flat over time, but the videos are short enough that it isn't much of a problem. Plus, I always enjoy seeing how handheld versions of the same game stack up against the console versions, since I recently picked up some Spider-Man games for the GBA (or PSP vs. DS, Vita vs. 3DS, which he doesn't really do). I wish he would go a little more in detail, but still nice to see.

I feel you there. I don't typically go for "let's play" videos but there is some fun gaming related content out there other than that.

One dude I am watching is chronologically going through the entire Famicom library and putting out a video a day going over each game. He is over 1000 games in now, and he's got a little over a month to go to complete the project.

Has it made me want to play every Famicom game? Not remotely, but I have picked up a couple after watching his vids on them (like Konami's release of Atari's Rampart).

DougDoug does funny and creative video game challenges. Stuff like:
-Beating a difficult part of GTA using voice software to move
-Programming 25 AIs and telling them to beat Pajama Sam
-Trying to beat Classic Mode in Smash Ultimate and must restart any time he says a fighter name, with his chat trying to make him slip up
-Beating a lengthy Skyrim quest with cheese wheels constantly spawning and filling the play area

He's quite entertaining.

This guy makes incredibly high quality videos about all kinds of games. Mixes in game footage with some acting scenes.

The only possible downside is It's all in French. And I don't speak French. I can get bits and pieces with the subtitles on though. Even without speaking French it's still great.

They are becoming more and more dramatic in there takes. Like with the PS5 slim needing to phone home when you install the drive. Nobody takes time to research. For instance, you can't take a drive from a non working Xbox Series X and pop it in another unless you take the PCB with it... That's not something the vast majority of people now how to do.. the drives are "Married to the console" has been since the 360/PS3 days. It's something Sony or MS can't really work around. YouTube is full of those awful takes. And I find many of the channels I subscribe to are all guilty of it. ReviewTechUSA is getting bad for it so far as calling it anti consumer and really attacking Sony without really looking into it.

It's not politics. It's literally Fox News's strategy, which is what benstylus was pointing out, and they've admitted it on multiple occasions, including their recent legal scuffles.
