Many thanks to everyone who Shaq'd or Quake'd this month. If you finish any of these games later on, feel free to let me know, and I'll award an appropriate badge.

The final tally for March's Game of the Month is ready. And IT'S ON... LIKE...

1. DONKEY KONG franchise - 23 points
2. Kirby's Epic Yarn - 19 points
2. Star Wars: Dark Forces - 19 points
4. Shadow Man - 18 points
5. Battletoads in Battlemaniacs - 15 points
6. Rampage franchise - 11 points

Sometimes a villain and sometimes just another stupid monkey, Donkey Kong began as a means of recycling failed arcade cabinets and ended up launching Shigeru Miyamoto's career as a superlative game designer and laying the foundation for Nintendo's video gaming empire. Even before Mario became a household name, Donkey Kong starred in numerous arcade and handheld names, sharing the pantheon with other mascots of the arcade like Pac-Man, Q-Bert, and Frogger. Since those humble single-screen arcade beginnings, DK - and the entire Kong family - have reappeared in platformers, rhythm games, racing games, and even a... math quiz?

To close out February and its Retro Games of the Month, I played through Quake II on my retro PC.

Number: 14
Full Title: Quake II
Platform Played: PC
Collection: N/A
Native Platform: PC
Original Platforms: PC
Badges: 2nd Amendment (2/2)

Unlike the original Quake, I played through Quake II a few years after it was released and its price had dropped to teenager-accessible levels. Like Quake, however, I remember the demo vividly. Quake II tried hard to distinguish itself from other shooters at the time. Enemies moved differently and would duck and dodge your attacks. Weapons themselves all had quirks that separated themselves from each other, like the accelerating fire rate of the Chaingun or the cooldown of the Hyperblaster. More than anything else, I remember firing the starting blaster into a dark crawl space and watching as the game's dynamic lighting highlighted the tiny bullet as it went from one end of the corridor to the other. Pretty stunning stuff, even without a high end video card.

Coming straight from a playthrough of Quake, though, all these little quirks - which are now standard in all but the most retro-inspired shooters - just serve to slow the game down. Once I got a feel for the game's level design and stopped ignoring the in-game tactical computer, I started to move through objectives a little more quickly, but the actual act of shooting never became as satisfying as it was in its predecessor. In the longstanding Quake vs. Unreal war, I've always planted myself firmly on the Unreal side of things, which dropped five months later. Playing through Quake II a second time, it was a fun trip down memory lane and an interesting contrast to its predecessor, but I don't think my opinion on it has changed much.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth finally dropped last night, and I dove right in. That will likely be my focus for a while, unless next months Games of the Month are portable-friendly.

Part of the issue might be the items you're leading with. Yes, they are some of the system's most popular games (except Triple Play) but that's the problem. Most people on here with an N64 would probably have at least 2 or 3 of the games on offer already. For example: Mario Kart is in 143 collections + 23 available, Goldeneye in 114 collections + 29 available, and Paper Mario in 81 collections + 7 available. For each game someone already owns, the duplicate game now becomes a not an exciting new adventure, but a task, as we now have to re-sell it to get back the money we didn't really need to spend in the first place.

I question whether most people would want Triple Play 2000, even if it is CIB. (Looking on here it's on exactly zero people's want list, and only 5 collecrions). The only people who would want this are those specifically trying for a full CIB set, ot someone who wants it for sentimental reasons (maybe it's a game their recently deceased dad played a lot).

For those like myself who don't care about CIB for N64 games (that ship sailed a long time ago), the empty Zelda boxes don't add much value.

The other big issues that are bothering me are (1) the expected amount vs price charting value, which you have addressed above, but I don't really agree with all your points - if you are trying to move a bulk lot, people will expect a reasonable bulk discount because it's far less work for you, and far more work for them in parting out and reselling the items they don't want. You seem to have gone the other direction. The higher the tiers go, the more you want compared to price charting. Tier 1 350 value selling for 300 (86%). Add Tier 2 and we have 1250 value selling for 1200 (96%). Tier 3 makes some headway with 1750 value for 1500 (back down to 86%). Tier 4 goes backwards again with 2150 value for 2000 (93%), and you continue that trend with Tier 5, at 2750 value for 2700 (98%). People just don't spend 2700 dollars on a bulk lot to save 2%.

And (2) the fact that you are selling "as is." If I'm expected to drop 300 to 3300 dollars on some games, I want full assurances that they have been thoroughly tested and working, and any issues like a dead save battery, or disc scratches fully disclosed.

In anticipation of the remaster that just dropped over the long weekend, Frank's Game of the Month was Mario vs. Donkey Kong. I got a head start on the festivities by picking up the Game Boy Advance original and working my way through the campaign mode.

Full Title: Mario vs. Donkey Kong
Platform Played: Game Boy Advance

Native Platform: Game Boy Advance
Original Platforms: Game Boy Advance

I started the Mario vs. Donkey Kong franchise right in the middle, picking up Minis March Again at the launch of DSiWare and playing through it - twice! I never touched the original, despite the number of times Nintendo offered it up to loyalists. I liked the Game Boy reimagining of Donkey Kong that inspired this game and was happy to see it'd gotten a new coat of paint and a lot of expanded content.

While the game got off to a breezy start, the game's difficulty quickly spiked, and Mario's quirky acrobatics started to become more frustrating than charming. Mario vs. Donkey Kong presents an alternative to the hop-and-bop parkour that made up Mario's moveset from New Super Mario Bros. onward, and while I'm impressed they could fit such a huge repetoire into just two buttons, the number of backflips I've done suggest it could have been less overloaded. Aside from a few really nightmarish puzzles, the game still managed to be a fun "snack" of sorts, even though it's not as memorable as some of Mario's other portable titles.

While I love experiencing the same game on multiple platforms, there aren't too many occasions where I immediately followed up a playthrough of a game with its remaster, especially so soon after the latter's release. Figuring "Why not?" I picked up the Switch remaster of Mario vs. Donkey Kong shortly before it dropped. The game adds two new worlds - each with a new mechanic to master - and brings all the graphics and level designs up to speed with the rest of the Switch library.

I couldn't put it down. The updated graphics adding a whole lot of clarity to the original's fuzzy pre-rendered sprites. The new levels and mechanics weren't particularly memorable, but they fit in perfectly with the rest of the game's original content. Most of the annoyances with Mario's moves were taken care of, and I didn't have nearly as many unfortunate accidents caused by poor timing or bad button presses. Purists may still prefer the original game and its difficulty, but I gobbled up the remaster, finishing it in less than four days.

While we're talking about Games of the Month, let's pivot back to the Retro Talkshop Thread for the other Game of the Month we picked.

My family bought their first "real" computer - a Gateway 2000 desktop with a Pentium Pro 200 inside - right at the peak of Quake's influence on PC gaming. After putting the machine through its paces with a few PlayStation ports and classic DOS games, Quake was the first game that really blew me out of my socks. The dark atmosphere, fully 3D environment, and blazing fast gameplay were completely unlike the other shooters I'd seen up to that point, which seemed almost cartoony by comparison. I played through the Quake shareware countless times - trying out different graphics settings, console configurations, Redbook Audio soundtracks - but never actually played through the game until many years later where I used it (and its two official expansions) to break an 18-month-long gaming fast.

After loading Quake onto my retro PC, I'm surprised at how much I remember from that first episode: the six secrets in the first level, the low gravity secret level Ziggurat Vertigo, the giant lightning-shooting Shamblers that always seem to appear as an ambush, and the mad dash around Cthlon's lair once you realize all your weapons are ineffective. The remaining four episodes don't give the same nostalgic rush, especially as the difficulty spikes, but I still hugely appreciate Quake's aesthetic and its simple, fast-paced, explosive gameplay. It'll be worth checking out the recent remaster at some point, especially its new episodes.

With Quake in the record books, I started Quake II this afternoon, wondering if I'll be able to finish it before Final Fantasy VII Rebirth releases next week. On the portable front, after having so much fun with the Mario vs. Donkey Kong remaster, I decided it was worth picking up the Game Boy port of Donkey Kong that I started so many years ago.

And... that's it for the Switch version.

It's more than just a nice coat of paint. They made a lot of subtle tweaks to the mechanics and physics. I finally managed to stun Mario with a big drop, but it's a lot tougher to do so and doesn't cause him to lose a life. I also noticed that the strategy that finally got me through Stage 5-2 in the GBA version - Stage 7-2 in this version - flat out doesn't work on the Switch, either because of physics changes or slight layout changes.

It made for a breezier experience, which I appreciated. The game certainly can't stand toe to toe with flagship Mario titles, but it's a yummy snack and a worthy remaster. It's also a trip to see Donkey Kong as a villain again.

Taking the advice from earlier in the thread, I'm moving on to Donkey Kong '94. I actually started the Virtual Console version on 3DS way back when that first dropped and made a decent amount of progress, but Loopy has my 3DS at the moment, so I'm going to start from scratch and hopefully duplicate the progress.

Indeed. And the circus-like levels were new for platformers. Maybe you're right. I'm definitely going to try it!

It's also worth noting that 'Glover' was announced a couple of years ago for most platforms, but once again we get it on a compilation for much less (physically). Nice.

It's a great idea for a game and Glover makes for a cute mascot, but I agree that my memories of the game are that it's pretty rubbish. Maybe I will like it better with digital controls instead of analog, like with Mario 64 DS.

I thought I had made a post here a couple weeks ago but I don't see it, weird.

Last year was my slowest year of gaming since like 2016 (I pretty much only played Mario Maker that year). Pokemon Scarlet took up so much of my time, and I was also still hooked on Salmon Run for a large portion of the year. This year, I'm determined to play many games in my backlog, plus replay a few of my favorites since I always have the itch to re-visit games I like. I kicked off the year with a quick and easy one, Super Mario Bros. To make it more challenging though, I beat it with no deaths, no warps, plus I collected every hidden 1-up mushroom (harder than it sounds, many of them have to be "unlocked").

Now that I'm finally done with Scarlet, my first goal is to complete several games that I started over the last year or two but didn't finish:

Zelda: Skyward Sword
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
Shovel Knight (100%)
Pokemon Y
Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
SteamWorld Quest
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Super Mario Wonder (solo, 100%)
Super Mario RPG
Spider-Man: Miles Morales

That will be a pretty good start! Even if I only play those games this year, that would be a solid lineup. But, I hope to play way more than that.

Here's my new list for 2024:

Having played all five platforms now with varying degrees of success, the Game Gear version is my least favorite. The two-button controls aren't much of a downgrade - I could barely tell the difference between light and heavy attacks on the SNES - but the Lynx-ification of the graphics kills the game's one redeeming factor, and the controls are the wonkiest of them all. Not that I'm heavily invested in Shaq's interdimensional journey, but the Story Mode is the laziest as well. You fight the final boss midway through the game just for him to "The princess is in another castle you" into another four levels, the last of which has you face off against... well... the most hideous character in the franchise.

Maybe the pea soup screen is hiding all the terrible in the game, but I really didn't mind the Game Boy version that much. Having played a number of other one-on-one fighters on the platform, Shaq plays surprisingly smooth on here without as many of the shortcuts as the Game Gear version. It's still not great for all the same reasons as its cross-platform brethren, but it could have been much, much worse.

The Genesis and Amiga ports of the game have five more characters than the SNES version because the solution to bad food is larger portions. I played through the Duel mode - which plays like a standard arcade mode where you face all the characters, ending with the final boss - with Leotsu (old Mr. Miyagi type) and Diesel (generic tough guy), and TO MY SURPRISE I absolutely tore crap up as Leotsu. There's an odd bug in the fighter code where, if you execute a special move command correctly, you'll chain a regular attack on top of your special attack, often doing twice the damage in the same amount of time. Leotsu's long reach and projectiles make him one of the biggest beneficiaries of this behavior, and I plowed through all twelve fights with little issue at all. Diesel's run wasn't nearly as impressive, especially against the final boss, but it's nice to know I found a thread to pull in the game to make things more tolerable.

And speaking of the Amiga...

The Amiga is one of my neater discoveries of the past few years' retro boom. It's a surprisingly capable personal computer with a massive following and a huge game library. Seriously. If there's a console or PC game that came out during the Amiga's reign, it probably got an Amiga port that probably looks great but saw some serious concessions to satisfy the platform's architecture and omnipresent one-button controller.

Including Shaq Fu.

At first glance, the Amiga port looks just like the Genesis port, but once you pick up the controller, things start going awry. The game supports a maximum of two buttons with most of the third-button's functionality activating when holding a direction and an attack button at the same time. For someone who spends a lot of the match doing sweeping kicks, not being able to easily crouch and attack quickly put a damper in my plans. After a whole lot of false starts, I managed to finish the game with Auroch - who has a devastating 2-3 hit special move that's great on a cornered opponent - and Leotsu, with whom I wiped the floor with the Genesis' duel mode.

It's not the game I expected to pop my Amiga cherry, but hey, first times never go as planned.

Man, if you had told me that half the games I'd play at the start of 2024 would be Shaq Fu, I probably would have unplugged and moved to a desert island temporarily.

On the non-Shaq side of things, I've started the original Mario vs. Donkey Kong for Frank's thread. I'm not sure where I'll go from there once I finish it; either move on to the sequel, or wait for the remake to drop later on this month. Once I finish the last of the Shaq characters, I'm going to move on to the RTT's other monthly mission - Quake.

I'd buy a PSVR2 if they announce a new Astro Bot game for it. Rescue Mission is the game that made me a believer in VR. It's legitimately one of the best games I played last gen. I do want to see the devs make a full fledged non VR 3D platformer, though. I think more people need to experience their games.

Astro Bot: Rescue Mission gave me that "wow" factor that no game had since Super Mario 64. I have yet to play a 3D platformer in VR that is even half as good. And since you didn't have to worry about maneuvering the camera, I feel that helps make Astro Bot be something you can return to 20 years from now and it'll still be awesome, and not have aged as poorly as SM64 or Sunshine (or really most 3D platformers from that era). Every time Astro Bot gets brought up it makes me want to replay it again. It's rumored Sony is doing a State Of Play next month, and next month will also be the 1 year anniversary of PSVR2, I'm hoping a sequel is announced.

Topic   Can You Read a Book for Every System You Own in 2024????

picklenickel

Alrighty. Totted up consoles, and I've gone with "families" of consoles rather than counting variants (ie. 2DS/3DS will be together, as will GBA/SP). I suppose I'll list those out first - NES mini, SNES mini, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, Switch/Lite, Gameboy, GBC, GBA, DS/Lite, 2DS/3DS, Mario and Zelda Game&Watch Handhelds, Xbox Series S, PS5, PSP GO, Turbo-grafx 16 Mini, Commodore 64 mini, Anbernic 35xx. Unless I did my counting wrong (highly likely) that should bring me to 20!

I've managed to work through 8 books this year already and will likely close out a 9th today. Been cruising through some smaller books that I've never actually read and always wanted to, so several of these have been really fast reads. I'm sure I'll slow waaaaaay down as the year progresses because I'm wanting to get into some hefty books this year as well. (Looking at you, The Way of Kings.) I asked for family member's favorite books for Christmas this year, so I'm also branching out to some stuff I typically wouldn't pick up.

Here we go, in order of reading:

1. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams) (a re-read) - I re-read Hitchhiker's every couple of years because it's an absolute delight and hilarious to boot. This year, I listened to the audiobook narrated by Stephen Fry and it will forever be the way I hear it in my head as I read it in the coming years. Only read the first book this go around, as I'd borrowed it on Libby to listen to as I was driving back home at the beginning of the year following holiday travels.

2. A Time to Kill (John Grisham) - A gift from my sister-in-law. She and my brother are both lawyers. This is a book that I typically wouldn't read, and yet, it was really engaging and I absolutely blasted through it once I'd opened it up. Grisham's writing of Brigance does create this flawed but lovable character that you kind of admire despite yourself. The opening chapter is the exact reason that I steer clear of this genre usually, but I can't argue its efficacy in embedding an immediate visceral hatred for the antagonists as the narrative begins unfolding.

3. The Batman Who Laughs (Scott Snyder) - First time dipping my toes into any of the Dark Multiverse business. I thought it was an interesting take on Batman and Joker. I don't really go wild for much that could be described as "bleak", but I did think this was great. Also ironic considering another read coming up shortly. Maybe I do like bleak stories, I just don't want to haha. The art was great. Will revisit several times just to pour over the panels too.

4. The Last Ronin (Eastman, Laird, and Waltz) - Another bleak one that I actually enjoyed too... I love the flashback chapters in the visual vernacular of the original Turtles. I wouldn't say the story was groundbreaking, but growing up with the Turtles, I still really did enjoy this one.

5. No Country for Old Men (Cormac McCarthy) - A gift from my brother. Another bleak one, but I'll whole-hog say that I loved this one. I watched the movie years ago when it came out and it really blew me away how closely the Coen brothers kept to the book. I think they did an incredible job with the movie and I'll re-read this one before the years out, if I hit my goal. An engaging narrative of the classic theme of good versus evil and the reconciliation of past, present, and future.

6. The Magician's Nephew (CS Lewis) - My mom tried to read the Chronicle's of Narnia books to us when we were little, but I don't think she ever actually made it beyond the Magician's Nephew. I I grabbed the old box set off the bookshelf in the basement when I was home for the holidays and I'll be reading through them this year. Obviously, loaded with Biblical imagery and themes (which isn't everyone's cup of tea), but I'm really enjoying them as quick little pickups that are fantastical and light-hearted in between some of these heavier themed books. I'll likely finish off The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe this evening.

7. How Do You Live? (Genzaburo Yoshino) - Grabbed this one after reading that Miyazaki's Boy and the Heron was inspired by this book. (Still haven't been able to watch the film, but hot dang, I really love this book.) I love slice-of-life stuff and this is that in spades. A short read that follows the events of a young Japanese school boy and his three friends, interspersed with writings from his uncle's notebook that are responses to conversations that they've had. A high recommend from me on this one.

8. The Pearl (John Steinbeck) - Good Lord. Talk about bleak again. Wanting to read through "classics" this year that I've overlooked and passed by and I read this one over the weekend. The story of a poor man finding inexplicable and unobtainable wealth and the fallout of what his discovery has upon his family. Brilliant writing. Truly heartbreaking.

And that's where we're at so far. I'm sure there's grammatical issues galore within the above, but I promise to take posts a book-at-a-time from here onward.

Emphasis on your. We all know there are noted and recognizable classics in the industry. I don't think I know a single child or adult that doesn't know the Mario level 1-1 song. While songs like the overworld for the original Zelda, One-winged Angel, or the Halo opening are surely great and deservedly popular, they just aren't always my personal favorites. So here is my personal list of favorite gaming tunes. Post your own favorites as well. Maybe there's a game you or I haven't played and therefore a killer song we haven't heard. I'm always excited to discover another great tune!

I found it difficult to compare old school beeps and boops to modern-day orchestrated soundtracks. These should almost be separate categories. Also, I think I could make my top 10 list almost exclusively off of the FFXIV soundtrack...but I won't. So many outstanding pieces of music in that game!

Some of these are just because they're absolute jams, others are because they were impactful of my time growing up gaming, most are both.

Mega Man 3 - Shadow Man
Move over Wily's Castle (MM2) and Bubble Man, this song is just too good.

Super Mario 64 - Dire Dire Docks
One of my favorite Mario songs. Water themed levels always seem to have great music.

Donkey Kong Country 2 - Stickerbrush Symphony
Until orchestrated tracks came along this may have been my number 1 video game song, it's still close.

Final Fantasy Tactics - Opening
Possibly the first game intro that had me sitting through the opening just to hear the music

Kingdom Hearts III - Opening (CHIKAI)
All apologies to Hikaru Utada, but there is something about the heavy violin replacing the lyrics that is just outstanding! Despite KH3s flaws, I couldn't load up my save without first sitting through the opening at least once. Perfectly emotional for the theme of the game.

Final Fantasy XIV - Close in the Distance
This might be the single greatest piece of music to come out of a video game ever. I can't speak highly enough about it. If you've played the game to it's epic conclusion, you know exactly how hard this song hits!

Might & Magic Darkside of Xeen - Lava Town / Necropolis
This song is a SoundBlaster jam! There was some kind of bug in this game that was never fixed where if you died and/or loaded your game repeatedly every once in awhile the music would not start. You could fix this by going into the settings and toggling the music off and back on. When you did that this was the song that would play until you moved to another area. As a kid I remember intentionally getting this bug to occur so that I could hear my jam before a tough dungeon or battle.

World of Warcraft - Legend of Azeroth Main Title
It's not that great of a track, but damn if I didn't listen to it for hundreds of hours on end. As an avid original WoW player, this is what you hear each time you start the game, cycle through character selection, etc. Not to mention when I would time out of the game busy doing other things, this song would echo through the house to let me know I had been logged out. Such a strong nostalgic song for me and my time as a borderline WoW addict.

Heroes of Might and Magic II (Expansion) - Necromancer Castle
In the expansion for Heroes II were alternate castle theme songs. The Necromancer castle was so damn good. Listen to that piano solo 50 seconds in! I grew up on this game and go back and play it often.

Castlevania Bloody Tears
An all time classic. It was the first song I learned on keyboard as well. The entire Simon's Quest soundtrack (all 5 songs or so!) is excellent!

Honorable mentions, or maybe in my top 10, I don't know:
Final Fantasy XIV - Endwalker Another intro I could sit and watch before logging in. Also, same as the WoW intro, when I time out of the game, this will start playing.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill Zone Probably one of the most widely accepted classic tunes and for good reason. I just didn't grow up on Sonic and didn't have a Genesis until well into my teenage years when I bought a used one myself. So, Sonic and it's awesome soundtrack just doesn't have a strong nostalgic presence in my mind.

Final Fantasy VI - Terra's Theme and Chrono Trigger - Corridors of Time Two of my first and favorite RPGs as a kid. I can listen to these soundtracks on repeat. These are probably my favorite song from each game, but it's REAL close. While they don't make my favorite singular songs, they would definitely make my top 10 if I ranked entire game soundtracks.

6481oQk" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYwS6481oQk (secure)">Castlevania Symphony of the Night - Lost Paintings This and Tragic Prince are top notch. Another game that while doesn't have one of my top all time songs, it's probably a top 3 overall soundtrack for me.

Kirby's Adventure - Rainbow Resort Quite possibly the first song I ever heard from a video game that truly made me pay attention to how great a video game song could be. Kirby's Adventure is another game with a killer soundtrack.

Silent Hill 2 - Promise (Reprise) I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the awesome piano work woven all through the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack. Haunting, catchy, perfectly captures the mood and theme of the game.

I'm not sure I could rank these if I tried aside from FFXIV - Close in the Distance, it might be my new and forever number 1. Also, there is a lot of guilt for not having more FF songs on here...almost every FF battle/boss/Prelude music is worthy of a top 10 list. DKC, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania, and Mega Man all have additional great songs, but I wanted to keep my list varied and not take too many of the great ones!

Enjoy!

I'm working on going back to school and cleaning up my finances, so downsizing my collection makes sense. I looked through and found a bunch of games I don't intend to play anymore, grabbed the VGPC prices and took about 20% off. Shipping will be free over $15 otherwise you pay exact shipping. #2 Mario Party 2 - *n64*

Definitely my favorite Mario Party. Probably because this was the one that I grew up on, playing against my best friend hundreds of times. So I have the most familiarity with it. I genuinely like the mini games in this the most. And one thing I enjoyed as a solo player that you could unlock the mini games as you played. Sort of a nice light RPG element, a reward system so to speak. Earning coins that you could spend to outright buy the mini games you just haven't had the luck to "land on" yet.

freebie "RULES" freebie

1. Respect each other and the gamekeeper(s) - this activity is a gift to the community, and jerks kill the fun.
2. Beat games. Proof is NOT required via an image, but lying is lame and you won't win anything for beating the most games.
3. It doesn't matter when you started the game - as long as you finish it this year, it counts. However, you cannot load up a finished save file and refight the final boss to get a clear.
4. DLC campaigns can count as a single clear for their respective game, so beating The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Champion's Ballad counts as two clears: BOTW and BOTW DLC. Any further DLC completed for that game will be lumped into the first campaign.
5. If you are interested in badges, when you beat a game for one, include something like 'Counts towards badge X' OR 'Earns me badge X, first game was Y.' One particular badge requires proof to obtain, however.
6. All participating past gamekeepers are thanked with a medal: image
