The release of a new Final Fantasy game used to be the gaming hallmark of the year, but for the past generation or so, it's filled me with skepticism more than anything else. Final Fantasy XV wasn't terrible, but it didn't take the franchise into the open world nearly as well as another massive franchise that made a similar transition a few months later. I haven't played Stranger of Paradise yet, but the readings I've picked up on it have ranged from "surprisingly entertaining" to "CHAOS". And I'm as big a fan as any of a decent remake, but Square-Enix seems morally opposed to releasing a true definitive edition of any of their classics. After all, if they gave us the perfect release with all the optional content, all the aesthetic options, and all the quality of life toggles, why would we ever need to buy another release the next time they needed another bite of the apple?

So, the whisperings that FFXVI would be darker, grittier, and more mature than previous offerings met my ears with a hard "meh." It's a cliché at this point that a flailing franchise or developer (especially during a transition to a new platform) runs out of ideas and tries to appeal to the Bro Generation and throw some blood, boobs and blasphemy into a game to make things seem New and Improved. And let's get this straight right off the bad: I couldn't give a flying flock that characters drop copious F-bombs in this game. Or that there's more side boob than an issue of Maxim. Or that the main character has more Stark DNA than Strife.

But there is a point to all the blood, and to all the other obvious fragilities of the game's main characters. For the first time in nearly two decades, the story of a Final Fantasy game had me by the balls.

I can practically visualize the board room conversation that led to the game's design. "Let's start from scratch," someone probably said, "and strip everything away, and then we'll slowly add back in the things that build the backbone of the franchise." The living Earth. Absolute power corrupting absolutely. Crystals. Magic. Chocobos. Gil. Awe-inspiring summoned monsters. A grisly, inventive geezer named Cid. "Okay, fine, we'll throw in a Moogle, too, but make sure you underline 'summoned monsters' to make up for it. Twice."

What didn't make it? Treasure hunting, and the bloated inventory that comes with it. The encyclopedia of status effects that could end a battle before it starts because you ran out of the precise curative you need to fix it. Active Time Battle. Overcomplicated growth and progression systems. Systems in general. Spikey-haired teenage divas with a "aw shucks" approach to the Apocalypse. Clive enters a battle with three potions, a handful of special abilities, a (properly-proportioned) sword, and a prayer. And as it turns out, that's all you really need for a satisfying - if not a bit repetitive - real-time battle system.

But back to the story for a moment: Clive is not my favorite Final Fantasy character, nor is he even my favorite character in this game in particular. (Sup, Cid. Need a throat lozenge?) But by the time the game's logo flashed on screen, I was on his side, where I remained for the next thirty-five hours. I didn't know or care if the world was ending. Couldn't be fazed by the various warring kingdoms or the respective bones they happened to be picking with each other. Wasn't thinking about what ability I was about to unlock, or what sword I would get next, or what was in the glowing spot of treasure up ahead. (Usually nothing...) But I wanted to see Clive get the justice and the victory that he deserved, and I was willing to mash my controller into oblivion over and over to make it happen.

The rogue's gallery of lesser antagonists made that even easier. The other dominants that run counter to Clive's mission (four fiends with elemental affinities... sounds familiar...) are have their fair shakes of mustache twirling and scenery twirling, but they serve their role well. Hugo Kupka is the personal standout, despite him originally being introduced as a beige Hulk with slightly better language skills. It also helps that the showdowns with each of these foes are some of the most memorable fights in the entire franchise, both as technical and cinematic showcases. The first ten minutes of the game, which serve as a preview for some of these unforgettable battles, may be one of the best cold opens in the series.

The downside into each of these set pieces is they shine a spotlight on how unevenly the game is paced. Without fail, each of these encounters is followed by a slower-paced, lower-stakes filler mission that serves only to fill out the game's 35+ hour runtime.

Clive defeats a beastman general. Then, Clive wipes out a small band of dirty raiders.
Clive destroys a massive magical artifact. Then, Clive fetches some rare herbs from a bush somewhere for... reasons.
Clive wipes out an unbelievable celestial beast. Then, Clive spreads rumors for some little kids.
Clive blows up a planet. Then, Clive waits in line in the DMV.

That last one may or may not have happened.

It's far from perfect. I missed the treasure hunting and gear upgrading a whole lot more than I expected to. The music - though gorgeously-rendered, award-winning, and full of plenty of cues that reach all the way back to the very first Final Fantasy game - is much more of a single voice than the varied energies of past games' scores. And while the battle and growth systems improve on the mess that we were thrown with Final Fantasy XV, I felt like there's a core mechanic or strategy that I never picked up throughout the game's runtime, even when I found myself in the center of the final battle.

Still, Final Fantasy XVI gets a lot of credit for making me care about a well-crafted plot again, thanks to its interesting main character, mature storytelling, and its ability to set some fireworks.

As 2023 comes to a close, the current games of the month - Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link - have both found themselves on my backlog. Miles is as much of a joy to play as his mentor, but I have a long way to go until I get used to Zelda II's unique mechanics, relative to the rest of the series.

I think I bought more games this year than I ever have previously. The CLZ Games app lets me sort and filter by a number of fields, and I discovered one of them is "Year Added" meaning the year I added the game into the database. I got the app last year, so there are a ton of 2022 entries obviously, but I was a little shocked to see my 2023 number...

494 games - and with Christmas plus a few incoming in the mail, it seems likely that by the end of the year i will have added over 500 games to my collection in one year.

I would say that's probably way too many, even with running game rooms at multiple conventions this year.

But some highlights!

On the US side of things...

Throughout the year I picked up a bunch of cheapy NES games to fill out the convention library. Classics like Kung Fu, Skate or Die, Blades of Steel, Pro Wrestling, Legendary Wings, Micro Machines, Marble Madness, Gyruss, and Base Wars to name a few. Stuff that isn't on the NES Mini and stuff that either plays 2 player simo or is relatively quick to play. Overall ended up with 43 NES pickups for the year.

The Genesis Mini 1 and 2 have an incredible selection of games between the two of them, but there were also several physical games I picked up, including Urban Strike, Bubsy, the James Pond Trilogy, Cool Spot and a few others. We have an AtGames Genesis that we also take to conventions for playing cart based games. Sound is a little wonky but in a loud convention hall that doesn't matter so much.

Picked up all the new Evercade carts for the year of course.

In September, a friend dug up her old Atari 2600 so I bought that from her with all her games. So that was kind of fun. Will probably upgrade to a Retron 77 at some point in the future. Thr Atari 2600+ is cool too, but after watching videos on both, I'm more inclined to go for the Retron.

This year is also the first year in a long time that I had the ability to play Turbografx games so naturally I balked at the prices of most of them, and bought Keith courage, Final Lap Twin, and Tricky Kick. Will rely on the PCE Mini for most of my Turbo fix.

My DS and 3DS buying spree of previous years slowed to a crawl this year, with only 13 games between the two systems.

Between PS4/5 and Xbox One/Series X, I got about 20 games. Most of them used or heavily discounted. WRC23 and Street Fighter 6 are the only ones I got at launch.

Bought most of my current-gen games on Switch, including staples like Kirby, Metroid, and Mario of course but also stuff like Fashion Dreamer, Boulder Dash Ultimate Collection, and Rhapsody Marl Kingdom Chronicles. 26 games total for switch.

I picked up 2 Wii games this year, both of them Prince of Persia.

The biggest surprise was how many PS1 games I picked up this year. Satan gave me Bubsy 3D, but as for games I willingly bought myself, I added some standards like Tony Hawk 2, Twisted Metal 2, Jet Moto, and Wipeout 3. A few off the beaten path additions include Spider, Jupiter Strike, RC de Go, One Piece Mansion, and the much anticipated Swagman.

On the import side of things...

I rekindled my love of the Touhou series and picked up all of thr official mainline releases for PC. 24 games. I also picked up one of the Densha de D games, which is a hilarious parody of Initial D, but instead of drama around drifting cars around mountain roads, you are now drifting TRAINS. It's mad and it's amazing.

I got 10 new Famicom games this year including Booby Kids (teehee), Nuts and Milk (giggle), Donald Land, Rampart, and Route 16 Turbo.

Picked up a crapton of Beatmania games on PS1/2 plus the appropriate controllers.

I got 32 DS games, of which only 20 were Mahjong games.

Picked up 2 Import PS4 games, Parappa and Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection.

Got 8 switch imports, from the Toaplan Arcade Garage games to River City Girls 1&2 to Tears of the Kingdom because someone here had it way cheap.

And that isn't even counting the plethora of digital games I bought... those are tougher to count since this year I also added the individual games on all thr Mini systems I own so it throws off the total.

I did buy 11 new C64 games digitally from itch.io though this year. So that was cool. Not a system I have a whole lot of nostalgia for personally (the only c64 game I remember playing as a lad is Silicon Warrior) but I did play a lot of EGA graphics DOS PC games so I have nostalgia for the aesthetic. C64 is still a pretty big scene nowadays with dozens of new releases every year (not bad for a system that predates the Famicom)

I seriously need to slow down next year.

It's been a really slow year for me, but I managed to beat another game, Super Mario Wonder. My son and I played through it co-op. I also have another save file going where I'm playing through it solo.

Well Amazon won this Black Friday for me, Passed on Bayonetta 3 CE for $40 and the switch didn't seem worth it even at $160. Probably one of the better 20% off AWD Days. $420 for a PS5, Final Fantasy 16, PSN for Alan Wake 2, 3 Copies of Super Mario Wonder and a Dualsense hoping for more drops.

It's been pretty quiet here, but hope everybody's got a good game or two to keep them warm as the weather starts to cool off. Who else is still working their way through The Legend of Zelda?

I'm about to start travelling for Thanksgiving, so I wanted to kick off our plans for next month a little early. As we talked about before, in the spirit of holiday redemption, end of the year crunches, and other time-honored traditions, December will be a redemption month where we give games that finished in second place throughout the year another chance to be in the spotlight. My little sister, who was visiting for my birthday, joined me in-game when I booted up Wonder for the first time. I don't think I've had so much fun playing couch co-op in years. The simplified multiplayer physics (we're no longer bouncing off each other and throwing our friends into cliffs) coupled with the "What are the Wonder drugs going to do to Mario this time?" effect turned the game into a fast-paced, giggly, colorful adventure. Even the ambient online mode, where random online ghosts play through the same levels concurrently - dropping hints and "help me" emojis as they go - adds so much personality to the game that's conspicuously missing if I'm playing the game on the go without an Internet connection.

I did not buy into any of the gimmicks when the game first launched. The new art style seemed unnecessary. The Flower Kingdom means nothing to me. The Wonder Flower mechanics seemed like out of character no-ops that change the gameplay without adding to it. "Just give me more New Super Mario with some new levels, bosses, power-ups, and let's call it a day," I thought. Man, was I wrong. Having played through the game now, though, I don't know how I could have been happy with anything less than what we got. Every level managed to feel like a completely new, standalone Mario experience that still managed to hang onto the little red plumber's core DNA. Amazing stuff.

I'm continuing to work through Final Fantasy XVI slowly, and I've picked back up Tears of the Kingdom, which has been pushed aside by a number of meaty portable titles.

This is another fan port of a NES classic to the SNES by Infidelty, in the same vein as Mega Man 2 from last month. Despite being the very first NES game I ever witnessed, back in 1987, I didn't complete it until a few years ago on the NES Mini. The SNES version is a subtle-yet-remarkable improvement. Aside from a few bugs that are just as funny as they are unfortunate, the improved performance adds a lot of snap to the gameplay, and the ability to rotate through items without entering the menu is a QOL improvement whose benefits cannot be understated. I had a real blast with this one.

To complete the Retro Talkshop Thread's Annual Franchise Challenge, I feel like I've been playing through this old school JRPG dungeon crawler for ages, but Backloggery is telling me that I started this in August, less than three months ago. The artwork, battle system, and sense of humor made this game a whole lot more enjoyable, but I'm not sure how era-accurate me would have stood up to the task without save states and maps. The required backtracking, single save point, and unexpected traps made dungeon traversal a whole lot more frustrating than I would have liked. That said, when the game isn't trying to stab you in the back, it's a fun game that I don't see myself replaying in the future without some quality of life updates.

I've picked Final Fantasy XVI back up in earnest, though I'm growing increasingly skeptical of my ability to finish the game before the end of 2023. On the portable front, I'm enthralled by Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Playing solo is nowhere near the giddy experience I had playing side-by-side with my little sister just after launch, but it's still a refreshing take on an ancient formula.

I've gotten 100% on the six main worlds and the hub world but haven't finished all of the Special World yet. I think I am missing ~15 standees as well and haven't gotten any of the badges unlocked after beating the game. The Switch says I'm over 15 hours. I wish it were more precise, but there is a lot of meat here. I am definitely in the camp that says this game annihilates the series. I also feel it is much stronger than its Switch contemporary, Odyssey.

Looks pretty solid. I'm super bummed that after 6 waves, they still haven't added N64 Wario Stadium. It's the only MK64 track that hasn't been remade in a newer MK game.
