I like this. My list is very similar to KCPenguins' list.
Cape Tier SMB 1 SMB 3 Super Mario World Super Mario Galaxy Super Mario Galaxy 2 Super Mario 3D World New Super Mario Bros U & Luigi U Super Mario Odyssey
Tanooki Tier Bowser's Fury Super Mario Sunshine NSMB Wii Super Mario 3D Land
Helicopter Hat Tier SMB2 Mario64 NSMB Super Mario Wonder (maybe this moves up by the time I'm done, but I'm very unimpressed as of now) Super Mario Land 2
Frog Suit on a Non-Water Level Tier NSMB2 Super Mario Land SMB The Lost Levels
Edit: This is mostly based on how much I enjoy them today, not how good they were for their time. Nostalgia definitely factors in though.
2D Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988, 1990) Super Mario World (1990, 1991) Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023) New Super Mario Bros. U (2012) --- New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009) New Super Mario Bros. 2 (2012) New Super Mario Bros. (2006) --- Super Mario Bros. (1985) Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (1986) Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA, 1988) Super Mario Land (1989) --- Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (1992)
I'm very tempted to put Wonder first. But, I don't think that would be fair, since I haven't even completed the game yet. All 4 games in the top tier are very close, as are the 3 in the middle tier. I enjoy all of the games in the 3rd tier, but each has a major shortcoming that holds it back (SMB1 and SMB:LL have awful controls, SML is too short, and SMB2 just has an oddness to it that I don't quite like). I'm not much of a fan of 6 Golden Coins at all. I know people will hate me for that, but I just don't like the style of that game.
3D Super Mario 3D World (2013) Super Mario Odyssey (2017) Super Mario Galaxy (2007) Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) --- Super Mario64 (1996) Super Mario 3D Land (2011) Bowser's Fury (2021) --- Super Mario Sunshine (2002)
All 4 games in my top tier are EXTREMELY close. I could honestly see ranking any one of them as my #1. I tend to put 3D World and Odyssey at the top, and a lot of that is due to the huge amount of nostalgia I have from playing them with my kids when they were little. Bowser's Fury could be higher, but it's too short. I've tried Sunshine two different times in my life and have not been able to get into it. I plan to give it one more chance, on the Switch. I hope to at least be able to finish it this time, but I doubt it's going to improve enough that I rank it higher than any of the other 3D games.
Super Mario 3D Land was so good. I didn't like Super Mario 3D World as much. I still enjoyed it and I'm not saying it was a bad game at all, but for a while it was my least favorite 3D Mario (that is until they released Super Mario 3D All-stars and I revisited SM64 and Sunshine and saw how poorly they aged).
I think what disappointed me was the emphasis on co-op and in 2013 they still didn't think there should have been an option for it to be online. I'm a huge fan of co-op games, but the people I enjoy playing them with the most are all over the world, making local co-op play impossible. In addition to that, nothing really felt like the game was designed for co-op, and by that I mean every collectible could be reached in single player, you never needed anyone else's help to get them, nor were there any secret levels that could only be accessed in co-op. Like the NSMB games it was built first as a standard single player Mario title, co-op was just an option to make things more hectic. I'm fine with that, but I feel Sackboy did co-op better.
I still have not completed Champions Road and I need to do that one of these days. Maybe I'll make that one of my gaming goals of 2024. I've spent many hours on difficult levels in Super Mario Maker, sometimes over an hour on each level failing and failing and failing some more, because I was determined not to give up until I complete them, I don't know why I never felt the same desire to complete this one level, but I need to finally do it.
The Top of the Flagpole (This is Mario to me) Super Mario Bros. (1985) Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA, 1988) Super Mario Bros. 3 (1988, 1990) Super Mario World (1990, 1991) Super Mario Galaxy (2007) Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010) New Super Mario Bros. U (2012) Super Mario 3D World (2013)
The 1-Ups (Borderline Flagpole) Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (1992) Bowser's Fury (2021)
The Fire Flowers (Enjoyable) Super Mario Sunshine (2002) New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009) Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023)
The Super Mushrooms (Solid entry, but not my cup of tea) New Super Mario Bros. (2006) Super Mario Odyssey (2017)
A Coin (Meh) Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (1986) Super Mario64 (1996) New Super Mario Bros. 2 (2012)
That First Goomba (Stubs a Toe) Super Mario 3D Land (2011)
The Poison Mushroom (Says it all) Super Mario Land (1989)
Who was mister list man, theJaw? Should ask people to post their lists (or tiers) for mainline Mario. Tiers makes the most sense imo, and use whatever criteria you want (favorite, best, historic, nostalgia, etc). (Copied the list from a website, not sure why there are two dates for 3 and World. I don't think they were released that far apart in Japan/USA.)

Number: 67 Full Title:MDK 2 Platform Played: PC (Windows) Collection: N/A Native Platform: PC (Windows) Original Platforms: PC (Windows), Dreamcast Applicable Badge: N/A
SupremeSarna already tore this game a new one. I thought I might have a more positive experience with it being such a fan of the original MDK, but outside of a few fun early levels, my run through the game was just as painful. The humor - mostly just silly Adam Sandler babble names, and fart jokes - is forced. The puzzles are frustrating. The jetpack is a war crime. And every moment spent as Dr. Hawkins is a moment for which I want a refund. I'm happy to see that we got a sequel to the original but disappointed - especially after letting it sit in the backlog for decades - that it was such a big dip from its predecessor.
Number: 68 Full Title:Warhawk Platform Played: PlayStation Collection: N/A Native Platform: PlayStation Original Platforms: PlayStation Applicable Badge: N/A
Still my personal OG of PlayStation launch window titles, Warhawk still plays like an epic shooter despite its aging graphics, cheesy cutscenes, and straightforward gameplay. I've gone through this one numerous times, but this time, I tried to change things up by seeking out obscure weapons upgrades and destroying as many ground targets as I could. The missile upgrades made the bosses feel a lot less spongey, and the more powerful machine guns made weapons conservation easier, but it didn't keep the final encounter from being just as tricky as always. This was a perfect palate cleanser and cake topper after the other Extravaganza games I played this month.

With my birthday cake completed but a few days left in the month, I decided to go back and unlock the gold border on some of my badges, starting with the Mega Man series. The Infidelity port of Mega Man 2 to the Super Nintendo has gotten some press in retro blogs recently, so I decided to check it out. The gameplay remains virtually unchanged, but the native port to the Super Nintendo reduces sprite flicker and adds MSU-1 support for a CD-quality soundtrack. The soundtrack uses the same music from the Rockman 2 Complete Works port, which I love, and fan remixes for the tracks that Complete Works doesn't cover. Save for a few minor bugs with pick-ups, it's the same Mega Man 2 I know and love but even easier on the ears.
Number: 70 Full Title:Rollcage Platform Played: PC (Windows) Collection: N/A Native Platform: Windows Original Platforms: PC (Windows), PlayStation Applicable Badge: Race Drivin' (already earned)
After playing GRIP, Rollcage felt like a slower-paced, trickier racer where traction and control are paramount. With a lighter, grippier racer like Jet, letting myself move too fast ended with me crashing into an obstacle or facing the wrong direction. The first few races made me look like I'd never played the game before, but I ended up getting the hang of things and finishing the game on Hard, which unlocked secret character Yuri for the gold Rollcage badge.

The Steam Deck community created a great native controller profile for OMF, which made playing the game on the Deck a breeze and a joy. Playing through the game for the first time with actual gamepad controls instead of a keyboard, I decided to switch things up and play through Tournament Mode with something other than the Jaguar HAR. After learning that upping the difficulty can unlock secret upgrades for each bot, however, I dusted off the Jaguar yet again and set out to enable the game's secret fights and the enhancements that they reward. It was a bit of a struggle and made me think I'd be playing the game for weeks as bot after bot turned me into scrap, but once I improved my strength and speed enough to squeeze out wins, the remaining four tournaments were a relative breeze. Next time, maybe I'll finally play through with something other than the Jaguar...

There's barely time left in October to squeeze out a final win, but I'll spend those final hours playing through the original retail release of MDK for my final gold badge. After that, there's a few other playthroughs on PSP that I need to finish up - Mega Man Powered Up and Twisted Metal: Head-On - that touch on the franchises we're featuring in the Extravaganza. Then, it's back to the old backlog and finishing up Shining in the Darkness and Final Fantasy XVI, hopefully before the end of the year.

Yeah I did a little research after. Apparently its considered by lots of people to be the best entry in the series. I’ve only played it a little but for me it is much better Than MK64 and the original. I think my favorite was the one they had at Disneyland. I dont know if they had more than one Arcade game out but that one was pretty amazing. I also loved the original Wii game. I used to really want to get the exercise bike that worked with that version. Im sure that bike is way too expensive now though.
Okay I looked on eBay, someone is selling one for 100 missing a brake handle. And theres a new (other) one for 2000. Nope.

You might be right I could swear NSMB U let you have 999 but I might be wrong. PizzaTheHutt wrote:

Honestly the hardest level was Climb to the Beat. Spent 40 lives on it. Nabbit and Yoshi aren't to helpful for it. It is accessible at least and honestly previous games just had the game over and continue screen. Lives are meaningless overall since the N64 days I think.

Haha my 6 yr old did the same! He beat Odyssey, 3d world, Bowsers Fury, and was working on 64 + Sunshine, was super into all things Mario... Until he discovered Minecraft. Thought Wonder would get him back to Mario and it was working, till it wasn't. He still wants to play it, with me, but he needed just his Minecraft fix tonight before we watched Willy Wonka for Friday movie night.
The game is fantastic though. We're still early into it, kinda easy, wish the gliding badge was permanent. Love how some of the characters don't take damage, but can't use power ups (good way to get my 3 year old daughter into it).
Can't wait to see more, very impressed so far (hoping difficulty bumps up a bit).
Number: 66 Full Title:GRIP: Combat Racing Platform Played: Windows Collection: N/A Native Platform: Windows Original Platforms: Windows Applicable Badge: Race Drivin' (already earned)
GRIP is a spiritual successor to the obscure Rollcage franchise, a futuristic combat racing game with huge-wheeled cars that can keep driving, even after they've flipped over. At high speeds, cars can drive on walls and ceilings and still keep on truckin' even after they're out of runway. GRIP started out as a disappointing follow-up; the physics engine and complicated track designs missed most of the sense of fun for which the original was known. A few patches later, however, and the game is back on track; pun intended. It took quite a while to get through the game's long, 11-tiered campaign, and a few of the events - especially the Speed Demon races, which take away weapons - were real tests of skill and patience. But overall, it was a blast that paired well with a Steam Deck or VR headset.

I'm saving Warhawk as a palate cleanser, so there's nothing standing between me and MDK 2 any more, for better or for worse. We'll save the world if I can manage to not kill Dr. Fluke myself.
Two more games made the list; one for the birthday extravaganza, and the other took me completely by surprise.

Battlegrounds takes everything great about One Must Fall 2097 and throws it out the window, save for the fighting robots. Gone are the incredible soundtrack, polished presentation, sense of scale, sharp fighting engine, and clever character profiles. In its place are a handful of oversized, buggy, unoptimized third-person brawling arenas where two or more "giant" robots clumsily wail on each other until one fighter - and your PC hardware - is exhausted. This isn't my first time playing through Battlegrounds, and while there is a part of me that appreciates the original did ultimately get a sequel, I was hoping for something that'd do it more justice.
And now for something completely different...

Any time we see a Mario Kart arcade machine in the wild, my four-year-old son usually gets me to throw a few bucks at it. (Let's be honest here... He doesn't exactly have to twist my arm.) Being the world's only Toad fan, he usually picks him as our driver and one of the green, happy tracks to race on. Today, since he's been binging the Illumination Mario movie lately and developed a fascination with Bowser, he opted to play as Peach this time around and race in Bowser's Castle in the Expert Circuit. It was a tough race, especially considering I'd never played on it before, but we squeaked out a photo finish against Mario and pulled ahead at the last second for the win.
My son then insisted that we move to the left and play again on the 1P cabinet (Toad on Peach's Castle, as usual) but as we were doing the weapon roulette, I looked back at the 2P cabinet and saw that the credits were rolling, which doesn't usually happen. Apparently, you can watch the ending if you finish in first place on Bowser's Castle. I snapped a photo for Internet points, and here we are.

I've started MDK 2 for the Birthday Extravaganza, though I'm also rapidly approaching the end of the GRIP: Combat Racing campaign, so it's hard to say which will be finished first. I'm hedging bets on the latter, given MDK's average playtime and the difficulty with which I've gotten through MDK's first two levels.
Each listing below is $20 shipped; combining listings will lower the price to $17 per. Feel free to ask for more images of anything you're interested in!

My birthday extravaganza has kicked off. I scratched my vehicular combat itch by starting on my Twisted Metal badge and finishing a forgotten entry in the franchise that I haven't played in ages.
Twisted Metal and Twisted Metal 2 were developed by a company called Singletrac, who ended up handing over development reins to 989 Studios when they were sold to GT Interactive. 989 produced two more numbered entries to the series to mixed reception (I'm firmly in the "WTF did you do to my baby?" camp) before handing the franchise back to its original team, which produced one last game - this one - based on its original engine. It is decidedly a return to form, abandoning the lame levels and boring physics of the 989 games, though the pivot to a more "family friendly" car combat game gets a shrug from me. The game has a ton of unlockables and some serious replay value, unlike its predecessors, and I did appreciate how many of the in-game tracks pay tribute to some earlier games in the series. I'll probably be picking this one up again to unlock some more secret characters and endings.

I didn't realize this was my first PS1 game for the year! Woo!
Next in the Birthday Extravaganza playlist is Mega Man, so I started Mega Man 8 for Saturn. The game is already living up to its reputation for having truly ridiculous voice acting, and I've barely made a dent in it.
For the record this is completely awesome, unfortunately it came in the same day as I got something else that ended up monopolizing my time so it’s just sitting around. Good shape, screen protector applied, black model 3GB RAM with 32GB internal storage and an SD slot that’ll take whatever you shove in it. What can it do? A lot! Here’s some footage of me playing PSO on it.
Here's a little 3DS. With the Drastic EMU I'm able to turn on high resolution and get nice, sharp graphics with great performance; Mario Kart DS has never played and looked so nice. But that's not what I captured, you get DQ instead :p
I haven’t done much other than Dreamcast but it plays a lot of stuff, N64 performance is nice, Platstation great, Saturn okay. I’d set expectations to Dreamcast and scale back expectations for anything more complex (PS2 or GameCube for instance) where it may not be quite as performative without some tweaks. You’ll have to source your own games but I’ll keep the 16GB SD inside. Pics later. Speakers and the hall sensor analog sticks are particularly great on this. Awesome value emulation handheld, gets my highest recommendation in its price range. Doninates.
After the marathon last month, September has been pretty quiet, largely due to my free time getting eaten up by work and the handful of really long titles that I was playing concurrently. I finally finished one of them.
Number: 60 Full Title:Tomb Raider Platform Played: PC Collection: N/A Native Platform: PC Original Platforms: PC (DOS), PlayStation, Saturn Applicable Badge: Girl Power (2/2)
The PC version of Tomb Raider didn't do much for me originally, but I couldn't resist picking it up for $20 when Sony started pushing its Greatest Hits line. I appreciated the atmosphere, the music, and the cool environments, but ultimately, I never made it past the third level. Games where you get lost easily never sit well with me. For the Retro Talkshop Thread this month, I booted up the Retro PC and played through the original DOS version, armed with a walkthrough to keep me from scratching my head raw. It was a fun experience that was clearly ahead of its time, if you head in with the mindset that it's less an adventure game and more an extremely demanding platformer.

My birthday extravaganza starts in a few days, so I'm gearing up to revisit some of my favorite franchises. Poor Final Fantasy XVI... I'm starting to think I won't be able to finish it before Final Fantasy XVII comes out... or even Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Hello, all. It's been a while since I've done any trades in general, but my older brother wants a working cartridge copy of Mario Kart 64 (manual included would be ideal, but not box needed). I'm wanting to get him this for Christmas ahead of time.
Generally only wanting to trade, so I will definitely look at "Wanted" lists, as I do not have a regularly updated "Available" list.
Trading my DS collection. Let me know if you are interested and what you have to trade. Mostly looking for HTF wants but will check lists. Not really looking to sell but you can make me an offer if you want, I much prefer a trade. Thanks.

Cart Only Lunar: Dragon Song (cart only) Magical Starsign (cart only) Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits (cart only) Wario: Master of Disguise (cart only) WarioWare: D.I.Y. (cart only)
I also miss Super Mario Bros. 35, it was the only one of the battle royal type games that I enjoyed and had the most realistic chance of a 1st place finish in, though I admit it did get old after a while just like the rest of them. I played the Tetris, Pac-man and Bomberman ones each for a couple of days before deleting them, but SMB 35 I got a few months of fun out of it at least.
I haven't even started F-Zero 99 yet, once I saw it was using the graphics of the SNES version I was less excited, because I assume that's the version they're basing it off of and that's the one I enjoyed the least (I pretty much only liked the N64 and GameCube versions).
I watched a streamer play it and saw some people in chat hoping they'd make a Star Fox 99 and/or Excitebike 99. I think we shouldn't just suggest that they give the battle royal treatment to all of their neglected franchises. As cool as this F-Zero might be to some (or Excitebike 99/Star Fox 99 could be), it isn't quite the same as if we had gotten an original entry in the series. Hopefully there will be a new one on the next console and they were just using this one as a way to introduce the series to a whole new generation of players.
