I don’t know if this is an “achievement” exactly, but it did make me reminisce on some things:

I first heard of the site because Pacrappa (last login: July 28th, 2006) would wear the logo tshirt in his shop.

I do remember signing up, as I was crashing at a friend’s apartment and I needed to make some money quickly. At the time, he was using a free dialup connection in Seattle called “nocharge” and it was a little lottery every time you tried to connect as to whether or not you would, or for how long. I am nostalgic for things like this. It was still the internet back then, so no shortage of dickheads and depravity, but looking back it seemed like a more innocent time.

First trade: with belladonna (last login: August 4th, 2010), trading some Dreamcast imports for some PlayStation Final Fantasies. This might be the only trade I’ve ever made here that *seems* like a fair balance even ten years later, nevermind twenty. Last trade, as in actual trading of video games for video games: some worthless junk exchanged with Frank almost four years ago. That’s sad.

I remember bill murdering the site overnight by making it paid sub merely to use. When I mention this to other longtime users they don’t recall it, but it definitely did happen..2005, maybe? Not a great idea. Also I used to get a newsletter for being a subscriber, that should come back.

In the last few years some other sites have appeared that also let you list your collection a la GameTZ, but I must say that we have a better system here, because of community involvement: when you want to list a game, you just do it and if there isn’t a listing for it that exists yet, you provide a link and voila. As such I would guess GTZ has one of the more complete lists of video games ever made, since we have all been contributing to it for over 20 years.

Hope to return here and post a 40 year message. That would be..something. Cheers, Game Trading Zone

lots of really cool things happened on this site, lots of great people come and gone, and some passed away (rest in peace to those)... but the memories will always remain!

Happy 20th!

There are plenty of other sites that have lists of games that are more complete than ours.

Gamefaqs, Mobygames, CLZ, etc. all have extensive work put into not just cataloging the name and system, but release dates and other details too.

I don't want to pooh-pooh GTZ as a resource because it's great. However, it is limited by covering only games people here have added. So there are sizeable blind spots on the import side (Japan and elsewhere, since this is largely a US-centric site), computer gaming (windows/dos/mac/microcomputers), and the digital-only fronts (especially mobile games).

@Technos that's pretty awesome how vividly you remember your first interactions. It's funny, I also remember mine from 15 years ago. Feels like just yesterday I was living on the BenHeck trading forum until I was brought on by someone (still can't remember who)

Hey I do my best to add games as I notice them being needed. raspberry

Hell, I'm pretty sure I went on a Famicom binge earlier this year, when I noticed one of my games wasn't in the catalog. laughing out loud
