Someone local on Facebook Marketplace is selling an Asus Dual RTX 3070 for $300. My current rig is a Ryzen 5600X, GTX 1070, 16GB RAM. Would this be worth the price tag for more-demanding games like Hogwarts Legacy and Starfield?

You sure it's not a cryptominer dumping the card? Make sure it hasn't been used for that before even considering getting it.

$300 is a good price, but I see prices around that area often enough to know that it's not something to worry about if you don't pick it up right now and time is on your side when it comes to used computer parts.

You could search YouTube for performance videos on the games you're looking to play to see if the 1070 is really going to struggle on the quality and resolution you're looking to play at. The Steam Deck plays Hogwarts Legacy, so it's not like the game would be unplayable.

If you do decide you want to upgrade, definitely ask if the card was primarily used for mining. If so, for how long and how well it was maintained. Just because a card was used for mining doesn't mean that it's bad. It's like buying a high mileage used car, it could be good for many years to come before any components go out on it.

You can also ask if they could run tests and send you screenshots of the results or if you can test the card in your computer before buying. Check YouTube for some guidance on this.

Allow me to rephrase, then!

You sure it's not a card that was pushed to the limit for months if not years, wasting lots of electricity, damaging the card to the point where it might fail at any time, just to get some fake money that some nerds came up with?

PS:
Cryptominers are the reason why most of us haven't been able to upgrade our cards for years. In short, they can all fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooff.

You mad

Edit: Sorry @Master_Z , I didn't mean to crap on your thread. Please follow SwiftJab's advice. Make sure the card isn't damaged or failing before you take the plunge. If it really was used for cryptomining, then you might be able to negotiate a lower price.

I decided to hold off, seeing as how prices have considerably dropped since I was looking a while back. By the time I really need one for something like Starfield in 6 months, I'm sure I can get one for the same price or cheaper.

I've got an AMD RX 580, used maybe 20 hours. I'd sell it for $120 + shipping

That's worse than my current card, thanks for the shameless plug!

I would be cautious, the Crypto thing is real, your probably talking more of a gamble and with the crash anyone could see that a bunch of cards got dumped on the 2nd hand market. Not saying all are bad but you are taking more of a risk with a "crypto card".

In the end though you made a good choice. You can't go wrong with waiting.
