This dress was brought up in a conversation today, so we found the picture and were comparing our results on what we saw. All I can say is that color perception is an amazing thing.

Black and blue or maybe dark purple and blue.

How? I'm trying to see those colors, but that's simply not what I'm seeing. I see

gold and white

I asked a bunch of people earlier. Most weren't seeing that.

My wife said purple and blue and my daughter said black and blue and both looked at me like I was crazy.

I see white/a brownish yellow almost as if it were a few hues down from gold itself. The off set color is more of lilac white to me as well.

That's what 20/15 vision says atleast.

I can't see a goldish-white dress at all. Though, I do know the picture is trying to be deceptive with the hard color shift line present on the left side. Over there, I see what looks like a very large folded cow-patterned blanket, trying to come to the foreground by the bottom of the left sleeve, quickly going to the background. I'm guessing that plays into some tie-around for the "other" dress?

Okay this is weird. I pulled up this thread earlier and saw white and gold, but now I see blue and black. Well more like blue and a faded black.

I definitely hear that. I wonder if the look of lilac white is due to the smooth textured look of the cloth.

Seriously! The funny thing is, I don't think that's what I saw back when this image first popped up and everyone was arguing about it. I believe I was team white and gold back then. Could be because of different monitors.

So it's interesting that you mention monitors, because I've seen this on different screens, and when I look at what I see as white, I do see a tinge of blue, as if the white is at the far end of the blue spectrum. But I definitely don't see this dress as having black or purple.

@Scott does the blue go away with this one?

Here's a picture of the dress, but the brightness of the photo has been increased. I'm curious, if this changes the perception for any of you. What do you see now?

Ah, although it isn't the original pic, it's interesting to note that the brightness can have an effect on color perception. If there hadn't been any change, I'd have been very surprised.

I'll need to show this one to some people from yesterday, see what happens.

In the latest pic I do see gold and white. However when I take the original picture and adjust brightness myself it doesn't change and I still see blue/black.

I really thought OP was trolling saying they saw gold lol. But clearly he's not the only one.

I was thinking about this and, I believe last time, the color combinations were offered up front. Right from the beginning it was "do you see white/gold or blue/black?" So that could have contributed to me seeing white/gold last time. But this time, without options, I saw the white as more blue.

That one is ivory with gold lace. But I tried checking the original on different brightnesses and on different screens, and they're all the same to me…

:) Yeah, I wasn't kidding. But numerous people I showed it to found it very surprising that I was seeing white and gold. And when I questioned them on what they saw, they insisted blue/black. I'm trying to see blue/black, but I just don't. I do see a tinge of blue on the picture that I posted in the first post, so I can understand that, but definitely not purple or black.

I purposely didn't say the color options because I didn't want to potentially influence which colors anyone saw.

It was confirmed to be black and blue by its manufacturer (Roman Originals). It also had red, pink and ivory (+ the black lace) variants, but there was no gold/white at the time. That “brightened” photo offered earlier isn’t real, or is a photo of a different dress. Roman Originals did release one single gold/white dress for charity after this photo blue up, maybe that’s it. (Pun intended ahh cha cha.)

I always saw black and blue but there are some legitImate scientific theories as to why folks see white and gold instead. It’s apparently a very similar phenomenon to the duck/rabbit photo or the old lady/young lady photo.

I also do hate killing the fun but whatev.

This picture always reminds me of Neil DeGrasse Tyson when he says that the human eye is the most unreliable tool there is for gathering data. We have all seen this in our own lives where something is one color in a certain type of light but appears as a different color in different light. My car is a perfect example. It's a very dark blue. Depending on the light, it appears to be black, but it is definitely not black.

The picture shown appears to be cream and gold to me due to the lighting, but I can see where people see a blue/purple color, almost like a perrywinkle.

Aaalright what the fudge.

Tonight, I am 100% seeing gold and white. I've seen this photo a million times and have seen blue/black every single time. But tonight, I'm seeing gold/white. I opened it on my laptop and phone to see. I was SURE nonamesleft had to have updated his original post as a joke or something, but my post pointing out the designer's confirmation came long after the edits he made on his original post.

So yah, eyeballs do some weird crap I suppose.
