I'd completely recommend doing one of these yourself. I would start either with a mountain bike or a fat tire bike. Personally I would go fat tire bike.

Might have to go aluminum for wheels, but saving like 400 grams on your wheels is pretty big. Then get name brand rear cassette, shifter, hydraulic brakes, and you're good to go.
