Currently it is still supposed to be 12 months per their website:
The following outlines point expiration:
Points are valid for one (1) year from date of accumulation (that is, the date of when the points are posted to or recorded on the Member's Account.
If a qualifying purchase is not made within 12 months, all accumulated points shall be forfeited and the Membership is subject to closure at GameStop's discretion.
All of Member’s accumulated points will expire upon termination or expiration of Member’s GameStop Pro Membership, whichever is earliest. But technically they could make them expire tomorrow
GameStop reserves the right to change the points expiration terms at any time without notice and at its sole discretion.I don't think it's illegal because they are just reward points and not something of actual value like a gift card where money was specifically paid for that purpose. And even if stripping the points entirely was illegal, they could find other ways to make it not worth your time like making them redeemable for only $5 at a time, limited to one coupon per day, or even inflating the number or points needed for a coupon.
I think we can all agree it is not a good business practice to fudge over your customers though.
I don't care how desperate their financial situation is, that will not help. 200 dollars worth of points represents probably somewhere between somewhere between 8000 and 10000 dollars worth of purchases (depending on how many years it was accumulated over and how many 10000 point renewal bonuses you got) which is now going to be spent entirely somewhere else.
Taking $200 now in exchange for losing $3000 or $4000 per year in revenue is a fool's bargain.
Maybe if enough people start using gamestop as an adjective replacing words like scummy/unethical it will catch on.
