Where I live (southern Indiana - across the Ohio from Louisville, KY) the temperature rarely gets below zero, but it does happen. Our typical winter is a few months of 30s to 40s in the daytime and into the 20s at night. My philosophy on weather is the if it is cold enough to kill you, it is too cold.
The worst cold I've been in was when I went to Mackinaw, Michigan, in February to watch dog sled races. When I got up that Saturday morning, the weather report was 30 below °F with a wind chill of 50 below °F. I grew a full beard, dressed in layers, etc.
