Near me is a Goodwill Outlet where everything is sold by the pound. In a laptop bag I found what I thought was a flash drive. It is very light, so I gambled and bought it for a few cents. The main body is a disk about the diameter of a quarter and about 3/8 of an inch thick. It is flat on one side and slightly concave on the other. There is no response at all when I plug it into a USB port on my Windows computer.

Any ideas on what this might be?

I like this guess.

Another option:
Does it have a button or capacitive reactive pad? It could be a security key/token.

It might be a part of another device. I do this too, usually end up with pieces I can't do anything with. :p

I'm afraid I don't use an online image host, so I don't know how to upload a photo to this thread. I tried to do an image search for USB devices, but I didn't find anything that looks like this.

Like many flash drives, it has a wrist strap on the side directly opposite the USB port, but it there is no manufacturer identification or anything that might identify its purpose anywhere on it.

And this is how you get hacked/a virus/cold/flu/whatever... sticking unknown things where they shouldn't belong.

On-topic... I'm curious to see what this looks like because it sounds vaguely familiar.

Could be a license dongle.
