Topic   3DS/Wii U eShop closing this month. What to do with remaining $1.74 balance?

Sometime this month, the 3DS and Wii eShops are closing.

Not sure what to do with remaining $1.74 on the 3DS eShop, but why waste it?

I have noticed some random inexpensive games, but those just might be duds.

Furthermore, my 3DS has a whopping 80,000+ blocks of space remaining (not sure why I decided to use a 16GB SD card. I didn't use half of it, not even a quarter I don't think)

I might as well get what's worth getting. Load it up. Maybe even some demos,.as some of those are actually pretty great.

Any suggestions?

That aside, anyone else here getting some last minute eShop downloads on your 3DS or Wii U?

Loaded up on Fire Emblem dlc last night. When the shutdown was announced last year Atlus had a major sale and I cleaned up. As for wii u I snagged Ogre Battle 64 recently. Going to keep an eye out for sales and do a final buying spree right before it closes.

I don't think you will find much worthwhile under the $2 mark. Although there are a few $1 and $1.50 games none of them look to me like they would be any good. Once you get to $2 though, that opens up a lot of options. So maybe be a $5 eshop card from Amazon and pick up three $2 games. There are several good G.G. Series titles

You can also link to a Nintendo account and use the money on switch though!

Fire Emblem DLC? Interesting. Which FE games?

I wonder if there's downloadable DLC for games I already have.

All of them on 3ds

Hmmm, yeah I guess I could add funds. Thanks for the suggestion.

As for using it for the Switch, so after I had gotten the switch, it had been awhile since I'd used my 3DS and that 3DS was linked to another account. I created a new account for the Switch. (It was only long after that I got back into using the 3DS.)

The $1.74 is connected to a different Nintendo account. I can't merge the balance with that other one. Would be cool if they allowed you to gift eShop balance.

It's not the end of the world, but why waste it if it can be used?

Very useful. Thanks!

Is DLC typically a paid thing? It'd be a shame to find out after March that there was a bunch of great free DLC for games I already have.

There is a good bit of both. This was the generation when Nintendo was dipping its toes in the dlc waters.

My recommendation if you do nothing else, is hop on the eshop, go to the menu on the top left of the touch screen, and click search.

Set the search filters to platform: All Downloadable Software and Price: Free to 0

Find all the updates for games you are interested in (those often have some content updates too) and get them downloaded.

For DLC you generally have to buy it in-game on 3DS. So if you don't have the games yet, I wouldn't even worry about those.

For games you do have? You can still be choosy. A lot of DLC isn't really needed unless you LOVE the game.

I've bought a lot of digital 3DS games. Some I recommend that are a little more obscure:

Bike Rider DX (and DX2 Galaxy) - Silly autoscrolling jumper that can get pretty challenging. DX2 has a little paid DLC
Drancia Saga - Single screen action game with lots of jumping and stabbing. Not long, but plenty of characters to unlock to extend replay value
Miles & Kilo (and Kid Tripp) - solid platformers with a speed run emphasis.
Radio Hammer - a cute rhythm game about bashing people with an oversized hammer
Snapdots - a thinking person's puzzle game. Technically DSiWare but on the 3ds eshop nonetheless.

Some I don't so much recommend:
80's Overdrive ‐ Good idea, way too grindy.
Fishdom H2O - a pretty generic hidden object game. The original Fishdom was a match 3 so I was a little disappointed that wasn't even a part of this one.
Fun Fun Minigolf Touch - they put fun in the title twice but you won't find it in the game even once.

Some maybes:
Chicken Wiggle - Great pixel art platform game, but price seems a bit steep for a 3ds download. You can make your own levels though!
Harold's Walk (plus Harold Reborn and Automaton Lung) - kind of bad but also compelling in a weird way. You will snort at the prices being asked on these based on how they look

How does it work if I download updates for games I don't have? If I were to then get said games, would have to be carts at that point due to the eShop closure, would the downloaded updates then apply to the carts' files?

It saves the update on the SD card and the game cartridge will use the updated data when you play it.

I loaded up on FE Fates, some Echoes, and double checked Awakening. Too much dlc for these games that I had to study what was actually worth it, especially in Echoes that has a $45 season pass.

As for your games, I'm planning on sitting down for an hour across multiple days and look up the games I own to check. If you check the eshop, it tags games that have dlc on the games page. Then start up your game and check it out.

Good idea. Thanks.

Regarding Fire Emblem Awakening, so I actually beat that game last year. Put a good amount of time into it, around 60-70 hours. I wonder if there's any worthwhile updates for that one (being that I've already beaten it and played it somewhat thoroughly).

Just focus on story dlc and then do the rest based on interest. If it doesnt cost much, I would go for it because who knows if Awakwning will ever come out again.

Got something pretty niche from the 3DS eShop. The application that let's you use your 3DS as a controller for Smash Bros Wii U. Don't know if it will be put to use, but figured why not.

Doing that lets you download all the daily puzzles? And they're not still currently making dailies...right? (I think they were just for a year, iirc)

Has anyone been picking up free indie game codes distributed on Twitter? I got the Wii U games Chubbins and Soon Shine that way, and the developer, Dahku Creations, is giving them away en mass on his Discord. I'd recommend looking into it if you have the free space.

You can still sign into the eshop, re-download stuff, etc. Just can't buy new stuff.

If you go to the menu there is a spot to redeem codes though
