Topic Beat a Game 2023 - Quizzes!

We had a wonderful time playing games and posting about them this year. To reward all the players who dedicated themselves, I’ve made custom quizzes. If you beat at least 20 games, you’re included! Anything you beat since January 1 is fair game—it won’t just be your favorites, so I hope you were paying attention! For the sake of variety, only two games overlap across the quizzes: 2023 favorites, Resident Evil 4 Remake and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. (Super Mario Bros. Wonder was by far our most beaten release this year, but it launched after I’d already written these questions.)

I’ve outdone myself on the quizzes this year. While there may be fewer than in 2022, I’ve added an optional bonus question to each. It’s worth two points, and failing/skipping it won’t negatively affect your score. To compensate, it’s a difficult question with twice as many choices. Think you’re up to the challenge?

The bonus question? I got it right but wrong. Clicked on king neptune and it registered the one underneath

Oh I don't blame the quiz. I blame my phone. Loves to occassionally input the wrong area of the screen when touched.

I got an 8/10 on Legendroko's. Got the Tony Hawk and Viva Pinata wrong. Also got the bonus banjo wrong. I literally couldn't remember all of the things Grunty's sister tells you about her. haha

The Grunty question is a little tricky since Brentilda says different facts every playthrough. So there's a 1/3 chance of the getting baked beans quote, for example.

|1/3 chance, and I've only played through Tooie twice (once in my childhood on N64 and once when it came to XBL. Makes me want to play it next year!)

Correct Answers: Final Fantasy, Hogwarts Legacy, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, bonus question about Marvel's Midnight Suns

Incorrect Answers: Golf, Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition, RE4: Remake, Tekken 3, Twisted Metal, Twisted Metal 2, UnderMine

This mostly made sense to me. Most of my incorrect answers were about games I wasn't that into and mostly beat for badges except for RE4: Remake and UnderMine (both of which I loved). I think I missed the RE4 one, because the RE storyline is pretty convoluted, and I'm constantly getting characters' names confused. I missed the UnderMine one because there are hundreds of relics, and, even though I unlocked a ton, platinumed the game, and spent tons of hours playing, I never actually unlocked the relic that was the correct answer. (I've never seen it despite doing dozens of runs in UnderMine.)

I included Golf as a wildcard pick, since I knew the ideal question already. Everyone shouts, “Fight,” before a round of golf.

RE4R was a tricky question since it’s different between the original and the remake. As for UnderMine, I threw that in last-minute since you kept gushing about the game. I figured you’d appreciate it at least.

You had a good spread of popular/legacy games, so I was very happy with your quiz in the end. I hope you’ve learned more about some of your past clears through this.

Thank you! Your live reaction was fun to watch. You did a great job! The musical accompaniment made it even better.

Yes, the “jump, jump” quote comes from a mechanical prompt during the snowboarding sequences, not a real Robot Master. Hawkins’ quote was a joke that stuck me, and Pain Elementals received a notable redesign in Doom 64.

I couldn't recall off the top of my head the tracks in the Triforce Cup in Mario Kart, nor what the Funky level did in SMW. I hadn't played that level since adolescence.
Some Mario fan I am, I missed them both.

I played SMW exactly once in 2019, and I barely remember the playthrough. I did get autumn, though.

Thanks @SupremeSarna but I did bad... only 3/11 - I don't pay attention to the games I play apparently. But a few I narrowed it to 2 selections... and got that 50/50 wrong most times - oh well.

Retook the quiz to see what I got right/wrong - I got Burgertime, Shock Troopers (hope so, I beat it 5x times) and Sunset Riders (gotta be 'all of the above') right.
