That’s a wrap for the 3DS and Wii U eShops. Over the past year, I and many others downloaded a bunch of games on either system (or both) in anticipation—some from our favorite series, but others just based on recommendations or curiosity. Which of those were the biggest surprises for you?

I was wary of buying Rhythm Heaven Fever Nintendo Wii on Wii U. Maintaining a beat can be tricky, and I had no experience with the series. But it was fun, charming, quirky, and had extremely catchy music. I still listen to the soundtrack every so often, and the six vocal songs are absolutely killer (seriously, look them up). This game was a real winner for me!

I would recommend these digital only Wii U games:

- Art of Balance
- Art Academy Home Studio
- Ufouria
- Pushmo World
- Captain U
- Dungeons & Dragons Chronicles of Mystara
- Affordable Space Adventures
- Daikon Set (Free)

As of this writing there is still an hour and a half left to purchase from the eshop!

I picked up a few games through out the week and made sure to redownload some previous purchases. I was kinda hoping for a bigger farewell sale and not the same old games. Oh well.

Edit: referring to the 3ds eshop

I cleaned up on Atlus games last year when they had a major sale. From what I read, they wanted a sale this month too but they made a mistake during their sale last year by calling it the final sale. Apparently Japan has a law that when a company calls a sale the final one, it's against the law to have another final sale.

As for what I got, tons of dlc and games. Loaded up on Fire Emblem and Atlus games dlc. Probably the oddest pick up I had was a trilogy of games called The Denpa Men. Those games and Ogre Battle 64 were my top pick ups since the closure was announced.

The Denpa Men was fun but ended up being a bit of a slog by the end.

But not many games use WiFi access points as a game mechanic!

Yeah, it didnt really look horribly impressive, but that initial part of the trailers that showed you using the camera to catch flying denpa men made me laugh. Simce I was out of time to test stuff, i just snagged all 3 games.

I recently played Little Red Riding Hood’s Zombie BBQ Nintendo DSi on 3DS, and I was impressed by its quality and appeal. The post-apocalyptic fairy tale setting clicked and the gameplay was surprisingly good. Red’s design didn’t hurt, either. Wish that one were cheaper to buy physically, but that was the point of the VC.

I liked it enough to finish it. I started the second one but it is more of the same mostly.

Wait, what?! That's a really solid deal. I was curious about the series. Would have gotten one. Didn't know. Played any of them?

I love it. Lots of intricacies to it and feels awful on a handheld TBH. I’d recommend jumping in on World or Rise if you want to try the series.

Sigh. If I had remembered that title, would have snagged it myself. Been curious about it for a while but always forgot about it.

They delisted that one early, apparently. I think it disappeared in February. I only barely managed to get it, it seems.

Most of the 3DS/WiiU eShop games I've enjoyed are the really popular ones. The main one I can think of that I really enjoyed, but not many people seem to have played, is Adventures of Pip. It's a bit on the easy side, but the gameplay is fun/unique and it has a great soundtrack.

After that, there's also the BoxBoy games, Gunman Clive 1 and 2, and VVVVVV.

Those were some damn good games and you mentioning them made me want to check out what else this developer has made over the years. A couple of months ago he released Onion Assault on Switch. Seems like it's a short game just like the Gunman Clive games were. The trailer shows SMB2 influences. https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/onion-assa...

I just recently beat Detana Twinbee (TG16) on Wii U. It’s a fun little time with cutesy graphics and challenging gameplay. Glad I bought it for $7 instead of tracking down a Turbografx to play it.

Interesting! It didn't review as well as Guman Clive, but I may still give it a shot.
