With the year almost half-done, I must ask: What have been the standout games, good and bad, that you've played this year? Let's say... oh... ten games altogether. I want to see how your list will change by the end of the year.

For my money, the best and worst I've played for the first time have been:
(BEST)
1. New Play Control! Pikmin
2. Pikmin 3
3. Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
4. Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure
5. LocoRoco
---------------
5. Perfect Dark Game Boy Color
4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars
3. Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman!
2. Pikmin 2
1. Sonic Blast
(WORST)

If you can't tell, I haven't played many bad games this year. In fact, most of the games in the Worst category are just fine, but have at least one or two moments that got frustrating/obnoxious.

Best:
1. Diablo IV
2. Teenage Mutant Ninga Turtles
3. Megaman Battle Network Collection
4. Grid Legends
5. Gran Turismo 5

-------

Worst:

1. Redfall
2. Redfall
3. Redfall
4. Redfall
5. Redfall

Played this on XB, had a buddy who wanted to show me it and man I played for maybe 30 minutes and I just could not go on. What a hot piece of garbage, Glad it was on GP and he did not drop full retail on this steaming turd.

*Also realized I have not turned my Switch on in awhile and I think I am going to play Breath of the Wild after I am done with Diablo 4.

Best:
1. Mass Effect (recently replayed all three games. Still amazing!)
2. Marvel's Midnight Suns (jumped back in for the DLC and felt like I hadn't left)
3. Hogwarts Legacy (my GOTY so far, but I haven't played many 2023 games so that isn't saying much)

Worst:
1. Kena: Bridge of Spirits (boring as hell)
2. Stranger of Paradise (20 hours of my life I'll never get back)
3. Fire Emblem Engage (not a "bad" game, but a very, very disappointing follow-up to Three Houses)

I actually enjoyed Redfall and beat it. I honestly don’t get all the “worst game ever” talk about that one.

I thought it was bland/boring. And I had a lot of technical issues with it. Its not as bad everyone makes it out to be. But its not a good game either. I also finished it. Soul Hackers 2 on the other hand, I did not. That game is straight up trash. And I'd rather play Redfall again than spend another minute in Soul Hackers 2.

From only the games I've beat in '23
(BEST)
1. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - solid
2. Doom '16 Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - should've played this sooner
3. Cuphead Microsoft Xbox One - tough, but satisfying to complete
4. Uncharted 1 PlayStation 4 - solid
5. High on Life Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - funny
---------------
5. Uncharted 2 PlayStation 4 - It's better than this, but I wasn't a fan
4. Kentucky Route Zero Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - just sort of boring
3. Recore Microsoft Xbox One - could've been better but feels like devs didn't care
2. Bugsnax Microsoft Xbox Series X|S - just junk
1. Mirror's Edge PC / Windows - just did not like this
(WORST)

Honorable mentions: My Friend Pedro, Tinykin, Legend of TianDing, TMNT Shredder's Revenge, Horizon 5 Rally Adventure (DLC), Wreckfest

If I count a few that I didn't bother finishing, then:
Hot Wheels Unleashed gets into the worst 5 as it was frustratingly too easy to go careening off the track
Serious Sam 4 likely makes worst 5 too for being a drone of lame reverse circle strafing and hunting for ammo
Uncharted 3 might eventually supplant UC1 in my top 5, but I'm only a few sections in so far

Jesus seeing Mirror’s Edge at the bottom of your list breaks my heart. LOVE that game!

I'm sorry, it was just painful for me. I can see why some might like it, but I'll attempt to justify my placement
PC port on my i9 running a 2080Ti performed like dog meat with the PhysX engine on, changing from lowest to highest settings changed nothing visually. Game was so oversaturated and bright, plus the first person camera gave me headaches. The lack of direction in the game causing stress when trying to run from bullets was tough. The use of LB/LT for jump/duck drove me nuts and I couldn't change it. Story felt predictable. I failed a bunch in areas by not getting the hang of timing jumps thanks to the perspective.
I beat it for Frank's GotM, otherwise I would not have stuck it out. I have the 2nd game and am slightly tempted to see if that's better.

Are we supposed to limit it to games we've played for the first time in 2023? If so, I guess remove It Takes Two and Mirror's Edge and add Far Cry 3 and Life Is Strange 2 (though it was my first time playing It Takes Two on Switch, so maybe it does count?)
I've played tons of crap though, mostly from the Switch eShop, but I tried to add non-eShop games too.

(BEST)
1. It Takes Two Nintendo Switch
2. Mirror's Edge Steam
3. Layers of Fear Steam
4. WWE 2K23 PlayStation 5
5. The Artful Escape PlayStation 5
---------------
5. Ice Age: Scrat's Nutty Adventure! PlayStation 5.
4. Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2 Grand Prix Steam
3. Barro Steam
2. Tray Racers! Nintendo Switch
1. Racing Karts Nintendo Switch

Best of 2023 so far:
RE4 Remake - relentless thrill ride from start to finish
Marvels Midnight Suns - utterly addictive combat loop
Zelda Tears of the Kingdom - No explanation needed

Worst:
Wanted: Dead - I know what they were going for, but everything about this game is absolutely terrible. Saying your game is 'a throwback to ps2 brawlers' because it has crapty graphics and controls is a cop out. A joyless experience throughout, with some of the worst floaty controls I've experienced in recent years.

High on Life was surprisingly good. I really enjoyed that one too.

(semi-ordered)
Best
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - I'm a long time fan of the franchise, enjoyed it
Ghost of Tsushima - solid open-world game
Unravel Two (wife/coop) - unique/inventive, coop done well
The Forgotten City - different and enjoyable if a bit indie-janky
Tails of Iron - nothing special, but enjoyed it
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales - Didn't like this as much as I hoped, decent though
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - Felt like a slog to get through this, but no real complaints
Horizon Forbidden West - Sloggish, combat was frustrating at times
Redeemer: Enhanced Edition (wife/coop) - solid coop fighting if uninspired, crashed a couple times
Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion - still playing, not sure I see why people love this, I guess it's funny
Immortal: Fenyx Rising - still playing, flying controls are rough for me, losing motivation
Zombi - not bad, feels rough "indie", but decent
Loop Hero - cool idea but I'm not making much progress
The Medium - a bit of a slog, just wasn't super into it but I beat it.
Returnal - I really wanted to love this, but I suck at dodging balls streams in 3D

Worst
Inscryption - disappointed given hype, lost interest, maybe I'll come back to it
Darksider Genesis (wife/coop) - gave up on it, just didn't appeal, coop was meh
Rogue Legacy - not my cup of tea, but I was cheap, so I tried it
For The Warp - Slay-like in space, but meh
Tents and Trees (demo) - not sure why people love this, minesweeper inverted isn't that exciting
Sackboy: A Big Adventure - tried it because it's free, not my cup of tea
Pipe Push Paradise - could not get the hang of this puzzler
Haven (wife/coop) - seemed too dumb, pointless dialog, weird play, gave up early
This is the Police - meh, dispatching cops lacks excitement for me
Overcooked 2 - stressful
Chicory: A Colorful Tale (wife/coop) - wtf, we didn't know what to do
