I've been seriously considering adding a Dreamcast to my collection. It bugs me that it's not backwards compatible but I can look past that if it be worth it from and game and price stand point. I'd really only be interested in the exclusives and games that run best on the system such as Grandia 2. I would be open to pick up other multiplatform games but I rarely come across them in the wild. Any input is appreciated!

It's somewhat hard to recommend now to most people. I say this as someone with several systems that used to have over 200 games between regions (probably closer to 100 now). I was importing for it back in the early 2000s and I've played a large chunk of the library. It really depends what you are looking for. It is a treasure trove of fighters and shmups. Very light on rpgs in English. There are a lot of really cool off beat Japanese games I could recommend but everyone has a different level of patience for brute forcing their way through games on in English. Some games do detect your system langage and will display menus in English at least.

I was under the impression it had a ton of RPGs. I'm guessing most of them never left Japan? I'm not that big on shmups or beat em ups but I'm willing to have a couple per system. I've also heard the system has a ton of racing games which I'm all for. I've looked into a good chunk of the exclusives games like D2, Blue Stinger, and Sword of the Berserk look interesting but that doesn't mean they're good much less good enough to justify their price tags

It is loaded with racing games as well. Sega GT and Tokyo XTreme Racer are my favorites there.

As far as rpgs it is really lean imo. Grandia 2 and Skies are good. After that there are some C tier games like Evolution and Time Stalkers but that's about it.

If you can read Japanese its 100% worth it still.

If you can't, there really aren't many exclusives left, much less exclusives that are still sub $100

I wouldn't recommend buying one today since most of the good stuff has been ported. If you get one it's worth going for one with an ODE installed. You can play whatever you want and sell the system if it's not your cup of tea. An added benefit is not having to listen to the very noisy disc drive.

It's small, inexpensive, and thanks to VMUs, it still delivers a fairly novel experience compared to all the other "turn box on, play game" with which it competed. Many of the exclusive games have been ported, but the best versions of many of those games is still on Dreamcast. (Crazy Taxi isn't Crazy Taxi if the first thing you hear isn't "YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!!!")

If you have the budget for mods, GDEMU clones are relatively cheap for the ODE space, and let us not forget that the DC played burned games like a champ. The PixelFX Gem is coming soon and will add HDMI out for $80.

With the Saturn? Both are such different architecture.

As many have said, most of the games have been ported to other systems. I will concur with the DC release of 'Crazy Taxi' being the best. If you aren't into shmups or fighters, again, most of which have been ported, the DC is a tough sell for the remaining exclusives because they are so expensive (IE 'Cannon Spike,' 'Border Down'). There are a lot of racing games, but there are either sequels on other systems ('SEGA GT,' 'Tokyo Xtreme Racer,' 'SEGA Rally') or they are more mediocre to good and probably also on the PlayStation or PC.

The Dreamcast definitely still has a rash of exclusives if you can deal with some jank, like 'Blue Stinger,' 'D2,' 'Sonic Shuffle,' 'Wild Metal.' Or more solid games like 'Draconus,' 'Alien Front Online,' '4 Wheel Thunder,' 'Red Dog, 'Dynamite Cop.'

I think it's best to go through the US releases, see what looks good, if it's been ported, and the price for what is still exclusive. You can mod your DC with a region-free bios or use something like a Codebreaker to play imports, and that opens you up to imports like 'Cosmic Smash,' but those are additional expenses.

Unless you do go the GDEMU route, etc. Which people do.
