Trying to do some last minute eshop stuff, hooked my wii u up, and ran the latest update from Nintendo (required for anything online including eshop)

After the update, it freezes up as soon as it tries to access the system storage (at the mii select screen or shortly after that).

Has anyone had any luck with Nintendo transferring data from Wii U to Wii U with one console broken? They still have an option for that on their website

On a related note, anyone have a working wii u with firmware 5.5.6 that they are looking to trade or sell? Would like to get a few more OMGCons with Wii U before they all die because Nintendo cheaped out on the mem chips.

I've never done a WiiU to WiiU transfer in general, but it looks like you're not alone with your WiiU bricking. I don't know how often you play your WiiU, but most people who have had theirs brick haven't played/updated it in years, and apparently it can build up crap data in its flash memory over long periods of unused time. Enough of it is causing bricking. Here's one article for reference.

It was working fine until the update ran. In researching that, apparently that is a semi-common issue as well.

It certainly hasn't been years since I played it. It was used at AkaiCon back in July.

I called Nintendo and they said transfers are still doable, and will be doable even after the eshop closure. He said they are even still doing Wii transfers sometimes

Gotcha. I figured you used it. At least the transfer is still doable.

It sounds like you need to take a NAND backup incase the system dies.

I finally got around to hacking my Wii U recently and I was so worried the whole time that I was going to brick it.

Really Scott? I found homebrewing mine to be very simple and stress free. Granted after doing it I really haven't done anything else to/with the system outside of paying 1 short session of Bayonetta from a legit copy.
Been meaning to do more but eh.

If you don't update the firmware, your buyer might. And if the same thing happens they will still want their $ back, and then you'll be out shipping as well.

If I were selling, I would update just to be sure. Better to have a brick you can sell as a parts system than deal with an angry buyer or an ebay/PayPal complaint.

This is something I thought about. That's why I'm not selling on eBay and only offering it here and a few other places. I'm not responsible for what the buyer does to the system after it's out of my hands is how I view it. Hurts my chances to sell for sure but I'll be fine if it doesn't.

In general I don't frequently update my consoles because I don't play online or use the digital store fronts. To quote Hank "I'm a dinosaur".

You can probably still sell it but you might get a lower offer from someone who plans to update it.

Eh, if it isn't the latest firmware I wouldn't even bother here. We have too many digital games to transfer.

If we were just starting out with wii u it might be a different story but we are day one folks.
