Overall, I enjoyed it. Definitely had quite a few beefs, but all in, I'd throw a solid 7 at it. Instead of harping on all the issues, I left entertained, a bit let down, and wanting more, overall I'd say a win.
I actually enjoyed it. From what I've read on the internet and Facebook, everybody seems to love Kano, some even going as far as to say he deserves his own movie, however, I found Kano to be very annoying with his childish insults. His one-liners just seemed forced into the movie for comedic value.
Most of the negative things I've heard about the movie are really just based off of the comparison to the original movie that came out in the 90's, which is unfair to this film, because most people enjoy the original because of the nostalgia.
Overall I enjoyed this movie. I would've liked for it to be a little longer so we can get more backstories on some of the other characters, but I have very little complaints about the movie.
I enjoy the original mainly due to nostalgia but that didn’t negate my ability to judge this movie off its own merits. I can definitely understand why it may have for some folks though. I gave it a 4/10 in the review thread. Fun schlocky action once in a while, otherwise cringey action/boring plot/awful editing/poor use of certain characters/bad dialogue.
I wanted to like it, the first scene is legitimately fantastic, but the movie overall did next to nothing for me. Totally understandable if someone digs this because they’re a hardcore MK fan though, I’m sure it’d be fun in that case
We loved it. Strong 7 from me as well. I didn't like Shang Tsung very much (he seemed more emo than anything.) Also Cole was okay but would have been better off sticking to all originals I think. Kung Lao was fantastic.
Read some stuff this morning that there will be 3 movies and rumors of Gal Gadot was Kitana but that might be wishful thinking?
I heard a lot of diehard fans of the original MK movie were let down by the newest release, also having a generic protagonist shoved in? Not sure how accurate the reviews are that I've watched, I'll have to see it. Although I can tell everyone the original Mortal Kombat film from the 90s is a lot of fun to watch, the sequel not so much.
I did like the original MK movie, but it's not like it was some masterpiece or something, and the sequel was just horrendous, one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It wouldn't be very hard for the new MK to at least be as good as the original.
Finally watched the 3 MK Legends movies while flying to and from AZ this past week.
I was ... pleasently surprised!
While all three were good in their own right, I feel like they started stronger and have lost a little per film. Kind of to be expected, but feels like they're building this to go wider/deeper.
I love how Snowblind introduced more of the later MK's with Kronica's Time Vault. I was wondering why they jumped ahead after Battle of the Realms, but now this gives more options.
I don't remember if they told us how/why Kenshi is blind in the game, but seeing his back story in Snowblind was also pretty cool.
I had no idea that these movies were all following each other as I thought they were seperate stories.
I haven't yet done homework on these, but I'm optimistic that they keep going.
The first Mortal Kombat (2021) was pretty disappointing, it started off strong and intriguing but was very meh overall. If it wasnt for personal connections to Mortal Kombat games in general, it’d be among the most forgettable action movies I’d seen in a long time
Bring on the sequel though, of course ill watch it
I've loved Karl Urban since Hercules and Xena. The dude has amazing range. I think he'd have been a better Kano but I think he can do Johnny Cage. I'm intrigued and excited for the casting.
Urban isn’t a good casting choice as the Johnny Cage the way we know him imo, but if they put some creative license into effect and change Cage from the younger, hotshot martial arts actor to an older, washed up martial arts actor, I think it could work really well. I have 0 expectations that MK2 does that though, considering how bad the first movie was.
Your ass theJaw. The first reboot was great for a popcorn flick. No way it would've ever won any awards, though. I agree with Karl urban, though. He will be interesting to see. He's a decent actor. But as Johnny cage? I agree with you and would love to see a pissed off old man who doesn't care
Thanks for noticing my buns. But yah, although it would be an example of typecasting for Urban to make him the grumpy, washed up character (Butcher from The Boys and all) I think that's the best route to take with the character at this point. It'd be a breath of fresh air compared to any other iteration of Johnny Cage.
And now I direct my ass to YOUR ass lordly_llama, the first MK was trash cabbage. I LOVED that first scene with Scorpion and Sub Zero, but the rest of the movie almost felt like a parody without the humor. But to each their own, I'll for sure give the sequel a fair chance.
He does rule hard. I loved him in Chronicles of Riddick, and just love that movie in general despite most folks hating it. I still need to watch Dredd, I hear that's a good one.
Yeah I recently added Dredd to my watch list, both the original and the newer one. I haven't seen the original since I was a kid, with my dad.
I didn't know he was in Chronicle of Riddick. I actually saw that in the theater way back when it released. It came out while my wife and I were dating, so we went to the movies all the time. I didn't even know who he was back then. I think it was Star Trek that really put him on my radar.
Like you said, theJaw, to each their own. But, "the first MK was trash cabbage" I disagree with. As someone was saying, maybe I am just on a nostalgic trip. It's not the greatest action movie, but for a reboot of Mortal KOMBAT, it rules. Way better than I was expecting. I think most everyone would agree that MK: Annihilation was hot poopy trash cabbage, though.
P.S. Thank you for noticing my buns, as I did yours.
The 1995 MK was amazing for what it was. I still will watch the hell out of it. The sequel was crap. The newest one was great but the new lead character was forgettable. Loved the scenes with Scorpion. Hiroyuki Sanada is a badass.
The reboot was good. Not great. Didn’t care for the new character but since the bar has been set so low by most video game movies, it was decent. Some odd character choices, but overall stayed true enough to the source material for me to sit through it. The 95 movie was good for what it was going for, and we can all agree Annihilation sucks. I do want to see the sequel, and I’m optimistic about MK12.
> Maybe I need to rewatch it… that first time, I thought it was truly awful. The
> ending smelled like my own piss.
Nah it was trash. Opening scene was good The rest is only mildly satisfying depending on how much you love the MK franchise As a movie, even as an obvious popcorn blockbuster type movie, it was pretty crap
I am looking forward to the sequel. I am hoping Noob Saibot will make an appearance since sub zero's body poofed toward the end. Noob is one of of my favorite characters. I wonder if they'll bring in Cyrax, Cinder, Smoke and the rest of the cyborgs, or whatever. Cyrax is another cool character, I think.
Wonder how real this is. Given what happened in MK11, does kinda make sense.

NEWS Report: Mortal Kombat 12 Gets Title, Release Date Window MAY 11, 2023 BY ZARMENA KHAN
The next Mortal Kombat game is reportedly titled Mortal Kombat 1 and it’s only headed to current-gen platforms, including PS5. This news comes from Twitter user billbil-kun, who is known for their flawless track record when it comes to PS Plus leaks.

I'm in debate ... $250 is WAY too much for this, especially looking at prior games CE's and their price. This crap is getting out of control, but ... what isn't.

Yeah remember when most CE's were $100? $150 tops? It's just inflation... everything is higher now. I paid $150 for a Dead Island 2 statue that was originally supposed to COME WITH THE CE!
Yeah that's some lame crap. I can only for the xbox version on Amazon after much searching. Gamestop is sold out for Kollectors except for Xbox. I need it for PS5.

It isn't just inflation, it's intentionally pushing the envelope until they find the point people stop buying. If they can use the cover of inflation to jack up prices even more, they will.
I know the last one sold really well on Switch (it was the first M-rated game to top sales charts on a Nintendo console since RE4 on GameCube), but it's kinda weird to me that this one is skipping Xbox One and PS4 but still coming to Switch. Hopefully they're not as secretive of the Switch version this time, because for MK11 they weren't showing screenshots or anything of how it looked in advance of its release.
I canceled my preorder. I know I’ll get it on day one or maybe preorder a different edition as we get closer. I don’t need the statue, and I certainly don’t trust GameStop to get it to me. I believe they would cancel it, as we’ve seen recently with RE4 and Zelda.
Omni-man (from Invincible), Peacemaker (from The Suicide Squad/Peacemaker) & Homelander (from The Boys) confirmed as DLC for MK1. Not a huge fighting game fan but that sorta makes me want to pick this up lol
That would be cool. I’m sure lots of old wrestling fans will kill John Cena 8000 times.
I also saw the thing Sinnie mentioned about the Tarkatans being diseased or something. It appears they’re changing them from a race to diseased as a whole thing. Not sure I like it but we’ll see where it goes.
Played the beta and it looks nice. I was a bit annoyed it didn't have any local verses so we just did the tower a few times. I think it deactivated yesterday.
It did. I don’t like the cameo character thing at all, and a lot of the fighting didn’t feel nearly as good as MK11. That said, I’m still looking forward to it, but my expectations and hopes have been lowered a bit by playing the beta.
Yeah Cameo fighting got stale real quick... they should have (and maybe they did) add a couple of different moves. I guess the xrays always got stale to me after seeing them 2-3 times per character anyway. I did see a new trailer last night and it looked like Shujunko (old man version) and Motaro (with 4 legs) is in it but looks like as cameo fighters.
Someone posted a "the first 17 minutes of gameplay" full of early spoilers (with four or five story-based fights), and I was really entertained by the story. It's got its funny moments.
I played through some of the tutorials because I get some of the in game currency for doing it. I didn’t finish it last night because I was tired. I hope to finish tonight so I can get into the story this weekend. What I played felt solid, but it wasn’t much at all.
The Switch port of MK1 apparently plays fine, but has insane load times, very low quality textures, characters have no facial expressions at all, and there's graphic glitching.
Did you ever play a PS2 port of a PS3 / Xbox 360 game? It's got about the same level of issues.
My point is, please do not spend $70 to buy the Switch port in the state it's in. It's absolutely horrendous and should have not shipped like that. There's lots of Youtube videos but it seems some are very spoilery so I don't want to mess up the story for whenever I get it.
The modern console and PC versions appear to be fine and lots of friends are enjoying those. Wish I could play it, but I doubt my potato could handle it.
> Did you ever play a PS2 port of a PS3 / Xbox 360 game? It's got about the same level

A more fair comparison is probably comparing a PS Vita port of a AAA PS4 game, because Switch is more than just 1 console gen behind at this point.
Did they repeat the same thing with this that they did with MK11, as in not show the Switch version at all leading up to release and use what looked to be screenshots from the other consoles in the eShop listing? I remember Mortal Kombat 11 on Switch was a big deal because back in 2019 it was the first time a major 3rd party release was launching on Switch the same day as the other consoles, instead of the Switch version coming months or years later, and it was the first M-rated game on a Nintendo console to make the best seller charts in many years. So it was disappointing in how little they showed of it before release, it made it seem like they had no confidence in it.
edit: watched this video, it doesn't sound as bad as I thought it would be. You should know it will be the inferior version before buying it though, but that's true with a lot of big budget multiplatform games on Switch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZeWLbeyaao
That Li Mei picture is so u-g-l-y it ain’t got no alibi.
Seriously, though, of course it’s going to look way worse. It’s a 6 year old machine that was maybe on PS3/360 graphics when it was released 6 1/2 years ago. I watched the RGT85 video on it today and it looks worse, but it also seems to play mostly fine, and that’s what should matter more. But yeah… those pictures ain’t great for sure.
I swear to make newer gen look better they make older gen games look the worst they could possible look. That looks almost like Nintendo 64 it's so bad.
> I swear to make newer gen look better they make older gen games look the worst they

It's portable! Is the only possible answer to justify this. But I can't imagine playing a fighting game on a small portable screen with two players is even fun at all

Well there's online, and also a Switch can be hooked up to a TV. MK 11 looked a lot better than MK 1 for Switch. It's like they just didn't try.
I'm not really saying Switch is the ideal choice though if you can play a fighting game on any other console, but this was pathetic and the fact they are charging $70 is a joke.
It's more than just graphics that are the problem, because Switch owners are already used to getting the shaft in that area anyway. This might have taken the krown from Mortal Kombat Advance, and there wouldn't be anyone else for Ed Boon to blame for it this time.
I just got my CE last night. The statue is a rubbery plastic but not super cheap like I worried about. The paint looks good, but feels lacking since it's not full color. There's the MK logo on front of the stand and it is just a cutout, feels like it should have been colored in or something. We probably won't have time to play it until the weekend if we're lucky.
That’s pretty much how I felt about it. It was uneven story telling. I was hunkered in and ready for a nice long cinematic story and it was going nice and slow and then the last couple chapters felt thrown together and 100MPH.
I don’t know about all fighting games since a lot of their stories are stupidly convoluted, but yeah the MK story is great and it was the first thing I completed after I did enough tutorials to get bored as crap.
Finished the campaign and I'm just questioning WTF happened. We transition from war and chaos to dinner with zero transition. Feels crazy rushed which is a shame given the world building they did with this one.
Haha, the trophy after getting through the credits "What Just Happened". Maybe I'm not so dumb... Gah I gotta Google, I feel like my game skipped and I missed several minutes or something!
Surprised since the Krypt has been a fixture for so long... but I admit some of them got so tedious. Not super mad about it. Has any new modes been added? Still looking at playing some for the first time this weekend.
Remember they did their own Mario Kart version on one game? I thought that was decent. I also always loved the Chess Combat. Sad they never brought that one back.
I love MK1 for the gameplay. Invasions I hope has seasons or something because I’m done with the main story it tells. I wish the grind to unlock stuff wasn’t such a… grind. But, it is and I like the game a lot but burn out is real, eventually.
They reset Invasions. Finally. Seems XP isn’t the same as it was, as in it seems to be lower than before. I’m begging for an XP event or talisman or relic or something. But, I’m back on the grind and feeling like I’m making progress.
I loved MKX and MK11. MK1 didn't grab me nearly the same way. The kameo system was a nice new feature but otherwise the game was flawed for me. Pretty much every character felt the same after playing for a bit and like others have mentioned the XP grind to unlock new fatalities/brutalities/outfits was relentless. I got through the story and completed the first season invasion and couldn't find a reason to come back. Sadly it got shelved and I moved on. I'll come back at some point when the inevitable story mode expansion is released and all characters are out but I suspect it will be a brief revisit.
The game is broken. The challenge tower is broken. I can’t equip relics or talismans in Invasions on certain characters because it wants to disconnect me.
The grind is enjoyable, until it’s not, because it’s stupidly slow. It’s faster after you put in like 30 challenge towers (300 fights), but still not great, and getting there is frustrating because Netherrealm decided that everyone likes characters with armor and other nonsense flying around. The brutalities being unlocked after getting to x level and not based on skill or actually doing the moves is lame, and you can unlock all the brutalities the the second fatality after you get to I think level 15 but your character level gets to level 35. If you don’t care about skins or taunts, there’s no reason to get above level 15 or 16.
I like the gameplay. I really do. I go back and forth because really liking the game, and the frustration overwhelming me and making he want to stop playing altogether. I’m sure the Ultimate Aftermath Mega Kollection will come out in a year or two, but man this grind is real.
I feel both of those things. This game is also… a lot. Especially if you want the side stuff and to get all the skins and whatnot. It’s the worst of live service gaming and the worst of microtransactions, alongside the best gameplay MK has seen in a long time and some pretty good fan service and nostalgia.
I just checked it out from the library a few days ago and am almost finished with the campaign. The story is great, and the graphics are really nice. I’m not a big fighting game person, but I’m enjoying it.
