So lil bit of a rant, here, but thought I would share what happened to me. So in the past I have ordered a decent amount of stuff from GameStop online, which is tough enough, (they almost never have any of the items available, its kinda deceptive actually how they show games like Godzilla ps4 on sale or special like 40$ but oh not available.) So I was able to find some games I wanted in stock, and went to order them. When I went to checkout they changed the price. Wondering why I called, they told me they canceled my account based on abuse of the return policy. I was pretty confused as in the past the only items I return was if they send me the wrong condition , wrong item, wrong region, or without case and manual if it has one. Even though i was never told they would remove my pro membership or cancel my account. The response from GameStop was sorry we suck , and have sent out multiple wrong items to you but we are not going to restore your account. So yeah also I think they breached the contract they have when the cancels my account without notice but anyway. Yeah they fudging suck.

Yep they are a complete joke. I quit bothering them due to all the returns I had to do. Even accepting loose working copies sometimes it was still several returns for damaged and wrong items.

Yeah, not worth it to potentially save a buck. One can only hope that this terrible company will have to shut down.

See this thread and i came home from work to see all my "new" games from gamestop i ordered have torn stickers, no protection to the cases. Two of the cases are damaged. Legitimately broken pieces fell off. And all the discs but one came out of the holder so they have scuffs. Ty gamestop 👍

I stopped shopping at GS for many reasons but these were the main drivers.

1) For online orders, any mistake they make is on your dime. You could order a ps4 game and they could mail you an old piece of bread and you either have to pay $8 to do an online return or waste gas driving it back to a store. Sadly this happens all the time. I've received disc only "new games", I've received the wrong game completely, I'm received games from other regions, and I've also received an empty box.

2) They raised the threshold for free shipping to something crazy like $80.

Gs has to be one of the most mismanaged companies around. And to expect the customer to foot the bill everytime they screw up is beyond ridiculous. GS can go under for all I care, good riddance.

Yeah it's absurd thanks everyone for commenting so far that im not crazy like it's my fault for wanting to get the game I ordered.

Gamestop continues to have great bargain bin deals, and they were once really great! But it's gotten pretty bad.

I remember years ago taking my son to get some new Switch game and it was an open case on the shelf, and then the employee had to go get the cart from somewhere in a back room. Then put it in the case and I asked "how is this new?". They said it was for theft prevention. This was in Irvine CA which is more safe and policed than any city I've ever heard of.

And selling used copies of games for $5 less than MSRP is standard, which is crazy.

Another day another GS gripe thread.

They sell broken crap on their website because they take broken crap as trade ins. That is their business model. Take in whatever and offer ridiculously low value in exchange, but in return you don't have to worry about selling and shipping it yourself or whether it has the case, if there are some scratches, etc.

They sell open games as new because they know most people are just gonna buy it anyway since they are already there in the store. And if you don't, the next person will. If people stopped buying open games as new, they would stop gutting them.

They have a high "free shipping" threshold because Amazon has ruined that for everyone so I actually don't blame GS for that one. (IMO, free shipping honestly needs to go away to bring some much needed parity to online vs in-person shopping).

They only discount used games by a couple bucks compared to new ones. That strategy is also working for them or they would change it. Because yes you can probably get it cheaper online, but if you are in store you can get it NOW.

They periodically make their pro membership perks worse and also raise the price. I still have a pro membership because paying $80 per year for $120 of eshop credit is still a decent deal.

They are still here. They are doing something right for someone. The only way they stop doing business as usual is for people to stop accepting it.

People online seem to have more issues with Gamestop than the general populace.

I haven't been in one in years but it doesn't seem like they're hurting because of that either.

I think the typical GS customer is the person who comes in and buys the latest Madden or Call of Duty and then turns it back in for 2 dollars a year later. Most of those people dont care if their new game comes disc only. That has to the only reason they even stay in business.

I needed to use some trade in credit so I preordered Mario Wonderful. Now I am thinking I will just go in store, cancel my prorder and get a $60 eshop card, get $40 more in eshop credit and just go with the two game voucher for $100 that they have in the eshop. Im nuetral on the physical/digital new releases so I dont mind not getting the cart and case. My pro membership expires tomorrow and I will not be renewing. Its a chore to go in and deal with the GS employees, and they upped the price to $25 a year so I will pass.

I'm definitely not the biggest Gamestop fan but I will say their sales this year have been really good, mainly their pretty constant B1G1 and occasionally -50 or -75% on a lot of new games, I got the majority of my "not buying it day 1 but will get it when it drops to $20 or $30" list of games from them this year when normally it's just waiting for Black Friday and hitting up Best Buy and Amazon mostly.

The $59.99 preorder free shipping and $79.99 instock free shipping does bite though. I've had to stop multiple orders halfway since I couldn't reasonably get to free shipping and I wasn't going to get games I don't have interest in just to hit that magical benchmark.

Will say anyone who wishes the company's demise should think twice about being careful what you wish for, the more competition the better and the more viability of physical gaming as an option, even if you yourself don't shop at Gamestop. Back when Best Buy was doing 20% off games, Amazon was doing it too, when one stopped the other stopped. Who's to say how many less sales we'd get with less incentive.

Man...the only thing that really ticks me off is the fact that they will do that tap dance of offering all the crap with their programs and then a situation like the one above happens.

It's part of why I really dislike big companies that look for ways to make their stock prices go up with zero regard to long term growth by JUST BEING A GOOD COMPANY who treats their customers well (and makes money on THAT).

They are a dying breed even if they did things right because regular consumers who are not big into this hobby are turning towards digital everything.

I refuse to give gamestop any business. Sending me a gbc with tape covering the screen and blaming me on damages was the last straw.

I remember ordering a game for pickup, going for it, then being told that the game was not available because an employee took it home to play.

I never bought anything at that store again. And I'm glad they finally went out of business last year.

I remember reading a gamestop thread on a forum somewhere and a lot of people were complaining about gamestop's terrible business practices.

Then they had a huge sale and some of the same people started talking about what they ordered and how great a deal they had gotten.

Not saying these people are hypocrites, just that they look an awful lot like large semiaquatic mammals native to sub-Saharan Africa playing a game of Dungeons and Dragons and rolling natural 20s.

Eh, I pay the $20-$25 a year for the pro membership to get the $5 monthly reward coupon x 12 months + $5 renewal reward = $65 towards $120 Nintendo eShop credit. It used to be better when you could just use it on a $5 code but they clearly were not making money off that so made it $10 minimum.

That, plus using DekuDeals to track when digital games I'm interested in hit an all-time low sale price allow me to get a lot of those indie games for really cheap.
