So, I never grew up with any cool "big boy" toys (sans Nintendo) - hell, my Mom wouldn't even let me have a beebee gun, parents couldn't afford stuff like that but also my Mom was always super nervous. Love being able to do stuff like this for my kids and live vicariously through them!

My kid just went to a bday party today, got to ride his first dirt bike (rode an EV and gas - preferred the gas), and he's obsessed! He's talked about one for awhile now, and his 7th bday is coming up.

Have done some basic homework, talked to some buddies that know their crap, and think I'm going with the Honda CRF50. Gonna check out one in person to see how well he fits (he's a tall dude). It's expensive but after seeing ones that are 5+ years old, still selling for retail minus a couple hundred, I'd rather buy new because this will be passed down to his two siblings, so I think I can justify the cost of entry on this.

ANYWAY, anyone know if dealers are negotiable on these things? Zero background here on how the game is played. Every single dealership I've found them at so far, all identical pricing with MSRP. Trying to see if there's a way to save a few bucks.

Thanks!

Went to a dealership this morning, oh man, now I want something!

Now I'm torn between the CRF50 (Honda) and the TTR50 (Yamaha).

Honda seems to be more the fan favorite, more aftermarket support. The Yamaha has an electric start, but is also 20lbs heavier.

He likes the Yamaha better because it's blue.

Also, wtf, all these dealers have like ~$250 delivery/setup fee? Christ.

I was about 7 when I got in a four-wheeler crash that almost killed me. It flipped backwards and would have fallen directly on my head had a small tree not caught it on the way down. I came back to consciousness with the metal storage rack on the back of the ATV about 6 inches from my head.

Me and my brother were off in the woods about a mile from our house. We'd done this 50+ times with no issue but one time is all it takes.

Be sure you are very careful and your son is always wearing a helmet. Vehicles like this are absolutely not toys.

woah, that's intense man! glad ya made it out ok! I naively thought 4 wheelers would be more safe than a DB, especially at the smaller size? But yeah, with the weight and that scenario, I can see how that'd be more dangerous. I'm gonna keep it throttled low for awhile while he's learning for sure. He's already picked out a pretty kickass spiderman looking helmet/gloves. I was wondering If he should also have knee/elbow pads? I have him wear them on his mtn bike when we hit trails.
