So I got a used gaming laptop last year (?) that technically runs great and does what it's supposed to do, but when it comes to the actual physical laptop, it has become far more trouble than it's worth. If it's not the fan randomly dying and making grinding noises, it's the keyboard buttons doing goofy crap out of nowhere despite literally nothing happening to cause that.

My main issue is the screen. With a simple moving of the laptop, the lower left hinge of the screen casing snapped and now I need to treat the thing like an ancient relic when moving it and placing it anywhere. The actual casing for the screen is opening up a bit at the bottom, forcing me to place it ever so gingerly to ensure it stays mostly shut, so I'm just waiting for the day one small movement splinters the screen to hell.

I plan to get it repaired eventually, but at this point, I don't want to use it as a laptop and would love to just use it as a desktop. I looked up whether or not it can run with the lid closed. Apparently you can set it to "do nothing" when the lid is closed, meaning I'd be able to hook up an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, and then close the lid and still run it as if it were a desktop (with a fan pad underneath of course).

My question is: if I do this and then shut down the laptop, will I be able to turn it back on just by pressing the power button and having it still just function normally? Or would I need to open the lid to boot it back up, having to manually choose the "do nothing" option each time I turn it on? I really just want to avoid having to deal with the screen at all, and if I can find a way to use it while keeping the lid closed at all times, that'd be ideal for now.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

I keep my work laptop closed almost all the time, I have it hooked up to a dock. That being said, the power button is on the same surface as the keyboard so I have to lift the screen st least a bit to turn it on. I can shut it immediately after that and it boots up fine.

Pressing the power button should do the trick. Possible that there is a BIOS setting for what happens when the lid is closed. You probably can test this in less time that it took to write that post. HDMI cable to any display and press the power button.

Thanks for the quick responses. @SwiftJAB I'm currently working atm and tbh would rather ask first and avoid the risk of destroying the goofy screen by testing it out.

But neat, my power button is located on the side of the laptop so I wouldn't have to touch the screen to turn it on as long as it functions that way. Thanks fellas! I'll give it a try tonight and see how it goes.

You can definitely leave the laptop closed and still use it just fine. Instead of powering off completely you can also just put it in Sleep mode and have a mouse connected to it. Wiggling the mouse should wake the machine up. No need to hit any buttons on the actual laptop.

If the mouse wiggle doesn't work then there may be something in Settings to enabled that.

Some docks do manage the power on/off for you so you don't have to worry about opening. What type of laptop?

What kind of laptop, are you willing to buy a dock or another device to power on and off the device if you want to make things easier or do you prefer software.
